W Through These Partals Pass Many Boys Who Will Always Have Lingering Memories of East Technical ,Q ,Vf FOREWORD Bound between the covers of this book is contained a biography of the June and August, l943, graduating class of East Technical High School. Here are the pictures of friends and teachers with whom we have spent many happy hours. These associations we shall forever cherish in our hearts. This volume will become more than a' mere record of a graduating class. Soon many of these young men will be in our armed forces, fighting an enemy that is now being fought by more than three thousand other East Technical graduates. We of the Annual staff wish to thank Lowell Watson, Charles Hurst, and Paul Scherer, who have so ably acted as advisors and sponsors. We present this June Bug with the hope that it shall remain as a refreshing memory for these classmates repre- sented here, whose lives are so vitally destined in this Second World War. ll llllllll i 1 l Y DEDICATION And when Munich came, with the collapse of Czecho- slovakia, Poland, and Greece, and there were bombers over London, war seemed a long way from East 55th Street. But as time passed, John Techite read of nations starved, of communities massacred, of churches burned, and of democracies forced into slavery. When the war came our road was clear. The path was set for over three thousand East Technical graduates who were to enter the combat on land, in the air, and on the sea. Many are the sons of East Tech who have fought the enemy in the fox-holes of Bataan and Guadalcanal. We are proud that they are numbered among those men who never quit. FOOTBALL A shrill whistle, toe meets leather, and a pigskin, carrying with it a potential story of the l942 East Tech football team, soars into the crisp September sky. lt was to be, not the greatest team in the school's history, but one still worthy of donning the Brown and Gold. East Tech finished the season with four wins, three losses, two score- less ties, and a fourth place in the hectic East Side Senate race. Seven returning Iettermen, Sway, Udovic, Dorn, Bisesi, Zukas, Borovac, Mihelko, formed the nucleus of the l942 edition of the Carpenter grid machine. It looked as if this were to be the big year as the Artisans began with a bang that resounded throughout the Senate. They routed the Polish Navy of South High I9 to IZ, defeated Glenville l2 to 7, for variety, lost to the unbeatable Warren I2 to O, and then ran rampant over the East High gridders I9 to 7. But then the Tech followers were rudely awakened and sur- prised as the John Adams Rebels played the Locals to a scoreless tie, and then lost a heartbreaker to the Eastern Senate champion, Collinwood, l2 to 6. ln the following game the Techites unleashed their wrath as they swamped Central, 40 to O. The next game with Cathedral Latin was a see-saw affair with the Artisans edged out 7 to 6. ln the last game of the season, without the services of their captain, Sway, the Scarabs were held to a scoreless tie by Benedictine. TRACK Amid the dust from their spikes and the bewilderment of their opponents at Thomas Edison Field, at Delaware, Salem, and Colum- bus emerges a story of the most powerful and invisible aggregation of trackmen to crush the cinders in l942. Jackson, Carter, East, Tolliver, and Gassaway, with excellent performances in their fields, put East Tech in its place to reign as the Ohio Scholastic Track Cham- pions for another year. At the Ohio Wesleyan Relays the Carpenter squad won their first state crown. Springfield High School, Springfield lO.l and Lakewood High School offered the Artisans plenty of competition. The Brown and Gold shattered only one record in the form of the shuttle relay race which they won in 57.6 seconds. Wilmer Jackson, scholastic hurdle king, shared honors with East, Babbit, Few, and Gassaway of the half-mile relay team which set a new mark of l:3O.4 in that event. Jackson evened his low hurdle record of l5.2 as he captured two first in the high and low hurdles. Jackson lhere we go againll leaped the l2O yard highs in l5.9 and the lows in 25.7, as the Greenemen showed that they were made of championship caliber to place in seven events in the Northeastern Ohio District Qualifier meets at Thomas Edison Field: then went on to Columbus to bring home the fourth consecutive State crown for East Tech. In the l942 track finale the Artisan 880-yard relay entries made up of Carter, Gassaway, East and Few, set a new record of l :29.l in the open relay event. llllllllll Rcw I: Grum, Massien, Moniak, Barton, Kerver, Ach, Schaefer, Mellinger. Rcw Ill: Mr. Dale, Kra,eviski, Kowalski, Dembinski, Stankiewicz, Schneider, Dukowski, Mr. HOCKEY l guess we just didn't pray hard enough was one of the com- ments that floated through the million dollar Arena as the East Tech hockey team again was plagued by a play-off jinx that has blocked its way to the championship title since the beginning of high school hockey. With Al Stankiewicz and Ed Grum leading the attack, the Artisans swept through a seven game schedule undefeated, being tied by Benedictine, only to go down to defeat in the play-offs by a strong Latin team. Bachtel. The Adams Rebels were the first team to take a spanking from the Carpenter pucksters by a 5 to O count. East High was next to be pulverized by the Artisans, 7 to l. The powerful Scarab skaters then blasted the favored Latin team, 4 to l. Shore and Ignatius proved to .be a little tougher as the Carpen- ters had to play hard all the way to come out on top, 2 to l and 3 to l, respectively. The Green Wave of Holy Name proved to be just a ripple as the Techites defeated them, 4 to 2. In the biggest surprise of the season a fighting Benedictine team deadlocked the Tech icers, 2 to 2 to end the regular season. In the play-offs the Tech sextet received its first set back of the season as the Latin team won the first game, 2 to l. In the next game the Artisans roared back, 2 to O. ln the final game the Latin team eaked out a 2 to l win. lllllllllll Row I: Keserich, Kramer, Lesko, Husco, Rice. BASKETBALL Dropping but one league contest, East Tech's Basketeers snared second place in the East Side Senate battle. The Carpenters did not fare so well in independent tilts, however, in league competition, the season was highly successful for the Hofelich men. Joe Lesko, Len Husco, and Bob Kramer, last year's lettermen, formed the nucleus of the new aggregation. Edwards, Rutti, Voll, Stuckert, Jusek, Oleff, Rice, Keserich, Soeder, Kapilchak, and Kar- woski rounded out the squad. The Techites were handed a rough reception in their first few encounters. West, South, and Holy Name dealt defeats to the Car- penters by successive scores of 30-27, 40-27, and 36-34. The team really began to click in the East game. Obtaining an early lead and holding it, they copped their first Senate victory, 28- l 7. A powerful Collinwood quintet was next on the schedule. A rough battle ensued upon the enemy's hardwood. At the end the score was deadlocked, in the overtime Collinwood found the range and could not be stopped. Final score: Collinwood 50, East Tech, 45. Accelerated by this defeat, the Tech hoopsters began to roll. Central, Glenville, Lincoln, Parma, Cathedral Latin, Benedictine, John Hay, and John Adams fell before the Artisan steamroller. Bill Voll, Wiley Edwards, Dick Rutti, Len Husco, and Captain Bob Kramer led the Tech squad into the Public Hall to engage South for Senate runner-up honors. The locals found the South five too tough as they went down in defeat, 46-37. SWIMMING Undaunted by the loss of their coach, Jack Chandler, who left for the Armed Service, a never-say-die Brown and Gold tank squad carried on a none-too-successful season at the hands of Captain Louis Allevato. He guided his teammates in every meet. This year's team was featured by freshman Carl Putrino, an excellent swimmer with championship qualities. Three times Putrino had boasted the record of holding the city breast stroke mark during the season, and broke the pool record in the 50-yard event at Erie Strong Vincent. He swam hand in hand with Balfound of Shaw to nose him out and claim another city title in the IOO-yard breast stroke in l3.2 seconds. Other men on the squad were Louis Allevato, Dennis Zukie, William Febel, Les Henderson, Robert McAuliffe, Arthur Fletcher, Edward Lihan, Manuel Martinez, and William Olschafsky. The Carpenter crew claimed only one major victory as the swim seazon ended. After being defeated the first time, they came back to sink Cleveland Heights, 34 to 32. lt was a foto finish victory for the Techites as they came out on top by capturing the 240-yard relay. In other dual meets the Artisans were carried off by Erie Strong Vincent, Shaw, University School, Shaker Heights, Cleveland Heights, and Western Reserve Academy. Shaker twice trounced the Brown and Gold by identical scores of 4l to 25. The Scarab mermen broke the jinx of decisive defeats when they sank Cleveland Heights and Thomas Edison's newly organized swim team. Rutti, BASEBALL On April 24, l942, the sharp crack of bat against horsehide reached the eager ears of local students as the East Tech baseball team encountered Benedictine in their first Senate contest of the season. The Carpenter line-up contained returning lettermen Vic lntihar, Johnnie Dobransky, Bob Kramer, George Borovac, and Joe Karakul, as well as newcomers Frygiers, Bisesi, Cardarelli, Melnikas, Sundra, Rascz, Kolk,Chojnacki, Foy, Voll, A. Rutti, and R. Rutti. This inexperienced squad showed promise as it nosed out the Bengals, 5 to 4. Next on the Artisan schedule was the highly-touted Holy Name nine. The Big Green overpowered the hard-fighting locals, 7 to 3. Following this setback, the Brown and Gold regained their stride as they whipped South High's Flyers, 4 to l. Ed Sundra, Tech twirler, limited the opposition to only two hits. Against Adams the Techites had a field day. Highlighted by Chojnacki's home run, the local attack garnered ten runs and allowed the Rebels but one. In their second engagement with South, the locals found them- selves in a furious slug-fest. The Polish Navy finally edged our nine, ll to lO. With revenge in their hearts the Harmony-men took the field to again do battle with Holy Name. Led by Melnikas' three safe blows, the Tech team out-slugged the Narners, 8 to 5. With this victory as a climax for their l942 season the Carpen- ters hung up their gloves for another year. TENNIS The I942 edition of the East Tech tennis team ended one of the most successful seasons since l927, as they won the sectional division championship, beating Rhodes, Glenville, and Holy Name. However, Cleveland Heights, winner of the other division title, proved to be too strong when they beat the Artisans for the city crown. The squad was composed of Captain Chester Dubaniewicz, Charles Mitchell, Robert Trenkamp, Carl Osterhus, Harold Winer, Herb Waldorf, Dick Heiman, and Jim Kacirk. ln the first match of the season the Carpenters walloped Rhodes 5 to 0, winning every match. The powerful Glenville aggregation was a harder nut to crack as the Locals had to go all the way to win 0 3 to 2 decision. Holy Name turned out to be a snap as the Netters polished them off 5 to 0 to win the divisional title. The Cleveland Heights team who won the city championship three times in succession, dumped the Artisans in the finals, 5 to 0. CLUBTRACK The new and undisputed title holders of the Third Annual Scarab Inter-Club Relays, the finals of which were run April 9, I943, were the Freeman Wreckers, who outscored eight other clubs and ran up a grand total of 3l points. The Scarabee's total was 20 points, netting them the runner-up spot. In the 50-yard low hurdles Ken Roden of the Scarabee Hi-Y won in 6.5 seconds. Toth of the Graphic Arts was second, with Hicks finishing a close third for the Wreckers. Gerald Foster of the Coli-Tech Rollers sped the route in the 50-yard dash event in 5.8. Hicks was second, Roden of the Scarabee was third, Rosenfelder of the Pencil Pushers was fourth. Toth, in a whirlwind finish, sped the 440-yard distance in 60.3 seconds for the Graphic Arts. Roden of the Hi-Y was second, and Tarczyniski and Popielski of the Alchemia were third and fourth respectively. Terranova of the Band finished fifth. A new mark was set for the Relays in the high jump as Jesunas of the Designers and Rosenfelder of the Pencil Pushers tied and then passed the old record of 5 feet 4 inches set by Solomon of the Les Chemistes in the first Club Meet. Jesunas then managed a 5 feet 6 inches and Rosenfelder failed. The half-mile relay saw the Wreckers' relay team of Dubkowski, Zdanowicz, Shirk, and Harrison finish first in l minute, 52.6 seconds. The Designers were second, the Alchemia placed third, the Band was fourth, and the Coli-Tech last. ln the mile relay event it was the Wreckers again-Jones, Welker, Dubkowski, and Zdanowicz-who won in 4:25. The Band took second place honors while the Scarabee placed third. The Coli-Tech runners galloped to an easy victory in the mile medley relay in 4152.2 seconds. The Band was second, the Pencil Pushers were third, the Chemists took fourth, and the Wreckers won a fifth. lllllllllll .INTRAMURALS East Tech, long an advocate of intramural sports, still rates tops among the city's high schools in this activity. Students here are eligible to enter club or homeroom baseball, basketball, track, bowl- ing, and ping-pong. Until the summer of l942 boxing was an added attraction and for years was one of the most popular tournaments. It was with regret that the local fistic warfare was discontinued. The Silver Gloves Tourney has given birth to many amateur and professional stars. Jackie Wilson, ex-Olympic star, Dan Merritt, National Amateur Heavyweight champion, and Mike Laquatra, of this year's graduating class, who won the Golden Gloves champion- ship and All-American honors, were all champions in their respective divisions when battling in the local tournament. Many others that rank high in the fistic world began their career in the East Tech gym. The twelve teams that entered the club baseball tourney were the Alchemia, Chippenda'es, Foundry, Freeman Wreckers, Gliders, Graphic Arts, Machine Designers, Mechites, Monarchs, Premiers, Tinners, and Ushers. The squads were divided into two leagues of six teams each. When the dust of the season's battle had cleared, the Monarchs and the Freeman Wreckers ruled the roost in their respective divi- sions. In the play-off game for the championship, the Monarchs dumped the Electricians and received the coveted plaque. ln the lesser-followed but equally enthusiastic homeroom tour- ney, twenty-six teams indicated a desire to compete for the home- room trophy. After a single elimination schedule had been run off, Homeroom I3 emerged as champs. As autumn rolled around, the pounding of rubber shod feet on wood and the thudding of leather against backboards announced the preparation for a successful basketball season. The contesting teams were divided into two leagues, aptly named the Brown League and the Gold league. As the competition ended the Mike Masters and the Tinners were tops in their divisions. The Mike Masters blasted a spirited Tinner quintet by taking two straight games, 27 to I4 and l9 to l3, to capture the title. 'f 'A' if ir 'lr 'A' ir 'A' 'lr 4 East Technical High School, through the cooperation and help of its faculty, has established over thirty various club and organiza- tions, Vocational clubs, of various specialization groups, are restricted to specializing students. Clubs of this sort are of great help and importance to students. Field trips, lectures, and other related activities provide the club members with a broader knowledge of the subject. Hobby and service clubs are open to the school at large. Eligibility to these clubs is defined in their constitutions. Membe-rs for the two honor societies are picked from the upper classmen having an average of 85 or better and showing outstanding qualities in scholarship, character, leadership, and service. Social clubs, under the supervision of some member of the fac- ulty, help the student to develop character, self-confidence, and personality. Most of these clubs give initiations to newly-pledged members and sponsor social affairs and outings. V The newly grouped Victory clubs are organized to help support the school in the war effort. Ah yes, memories, what a romantic subject. The word itself is simple enough, but the events and objects that make up the actual memories are, oh, so powerful. For instance, do you remember that everywhere you went, you had to have a pass? There were hall passes, lunch passes, movie passes, streetcar passes, library passes, in fact in one dark corner l heard the story of one guy that made fourteen passes, and then lost the dice. How did I get off the track anyway. Ah, yes, l was telling you about memories. Do you remember these? Crowded street cars as far as Scovill. The jam-up at the gates after an athletic event. The aromatic blending of vapors from the foundry and the chemistry lab as they competed with the cafeteria. Do you remember which won? Queer noises in the Aeronautics lab. All those bright l?l , smiling l?l , cheery l?i , faces that belonged to nondescript bodies slouching on the office bench. What do you think they were really thinking about, or were you, perchance, by ill fate one of their number. Those hideous screams shattering the deadly stillness telling the whole school that some member of the Freeman Wreckers had found a pledge to work on. Stankiwitz and Grum skatingdown the ice to the bewilderment of the cringing opponent goaly. Those unbeatable Wingbearers. But most of all remember, The best grads of all went to Sev- erance Hall! Barker, first principal of East Tech- nical, started classes with a faculty of 40 and an enrollment of 700. Among the first faculty members were and still are: Miss Laura McGowan, Assistant Principal J. L. Stewart. l909: Scarab first appeared as a monthly paper. l9l01 Introduction of June Bug to East Technical. l9ll-l9l6: Charles H. Lake replaced James F. Barker us Principal. Courses in Industrial Chemistry and Applied Electricity were introduced. Seventy-two students and six faculty members served in the World War I. l9l6-l9201 Mr. Charles H. Lake was promoted to Superin- tendent of the Public Schools. Mr. H. D. Bixley was his successor. Weekly Scarab made its first appearance. The gridders Senate Champs 'l5, 'l6, 'l7. l920-l927: Mr. Harry A. Bathrick became East Technical's fourth Principal when Mr. Bixley resigned. Student government was introduced and hall guards abolished. Nearly half of Case's students were East Technical alumni. Tech's greatest football team lost the National Championship on the West Coast. 1927-1936: Mr. Pliny H. Powers succeeded Mr. Bathrick as Principal. Enrollment in i932 reached a record of 3,820. Camp Frost, the only cabin of its type in Ohio, was built by students and faculty in I933. Jesse Owens broke three world scholastic records and tied an- other. The team of Owens, Dave Albritton, Alfred Storey, and Jerome Williams won the national track title. i936-l940: Mr. Powers was promoted to first Assistant Super- intendent of Cleveland Public Schools and Mr. Barnett W. Taylor became East Technical's sixth Principal. Forty-five minute lunch period, longer school day with two shifts, courtesy guard system, and 20 minutes for noon movies were introduced. The class of June, l94O, was one of the largest classes to graduate. The l3th Biennial Festival of Fun was the most successful ever sponsored by East Technical. Assistant Principal V. D. Hawkins retires after 32 years of service. He was replaced by Franklin R. Bemisderfer. l942: Elmer Litchfield, machine shop instructor, died. Track team won every track meet it entered and were State Champs for fourth consecutive time.
