THE JUNE BUG 7 At the beginning of the year America awoke to a new era, an era of reconstruction, to problems dealing with new ideas and new aims, and opening new fields of endeavor. At this same period we, to drift from the sublime to the commonplace, were as editors launched upon a similar and to us an equally trying situation, the re-construction of East Technical’s yearly chronicle, the June Bug. We, like all our predecessors, foresaw the usual insurmountable difficulties, only this year unusual. We have builded as best we knew, however, and as the end of the yeardraws near we gain, even in our imperfections, some confidence and hope. May what we have done be a worthy remembrance of the class of 1919! A lengthy paragraph might here be devoted to the acquirements and achievements of this class, but it is hardly needed. Suffice it to say, no other class has ever had influenza and military training both in the same year! Our time for work has been a great deal shortened, and we have had to attack with an especial zeal and determination the problem of publishing a creditable book. But the spirit of work, which has always dwelt at East Tech, has walked among us more than ever this year, and we have followed her humbly up and down these halls. We beg you to accept herewith the fruits of our labor. Wherein we have succeeded, we are proud; wherein we have failed, we pray for gentle readers. A word here as to the making of our book might be of general interest. Every line of our June Bug is set and printed in our own East Tech printshop. So far as we know, this is the only high school in the United States that can make such a claim. We have our own corps of artists and cartoonists, strictly local talent, to say nothing of an army of amateur authors. This year almost all our snapshots and the pictures of our school societies were taken either by East Tech students or by teachers. Some day we may even bind our own books! It is our desire, year by year, to have the June Bug more and more a faithful record of the activities and achievements of our students.
