THE GRAND OPENING The evening of May 4th. 1983. brought a new opening to East Side High The Media Center Among the guests present at this prestigious event were members of the Board of Education, administrators, parents and friends. Our honored guests were. Mr. Jay. former East Side teacher, and Mrs. Houston, a member of the first graduating class of 1914 Mrs. Carcfrelos. began the ceremonies and presented Mr Jay. the guest speaker for the evening Mr Jay. shared some amusing anecdotes from his days at East Side and made a very special statement. Once an East Stder always an East Sider” this touched our hearts because we knew it would also be true for us. Mr. Goff, former East Side Principol. presented a plaque, commemorating the event and marking this special openmg. Mrs CordWos and Mr Joy snare a pleasant moment Mr Ransom. Director of Fine Arts and Medta. engoged n a pleasant conversation with Sonia Gonzalez a student hostess for the event. Presenting the plaque at the ceremonies is former Principal. i. recognition Maria Manuela Cardiellos, Principal of East Side High School, was born in Portugol and emigrated to the United States at the age of three (3). She attended Lafayette Street School and continued on to East Side High School graduating in 1942. Four years later she received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Douglass College. Rutgers University. In 1943, she started the Bilingual classes for foreign students at Lafayette St. School. For a number of years. Mrs Cardiellos taught Spanish and English at Central High School, where she was responsible for introducing the Spanish magazine. Ole and the Literary magazine Leaves. In 1968 she returned to her alma mater. East Side High School, as instructor of English and Spanish. At East Side, she introduced Portuguese as a foreign language and organized the Portuguese Club as well as the publication Os Academlcos. From 1973 through 1979 Maria Manuela Cardiellos, was Teacher-to Assist, Bilingual Coordinator, and Acting Vice-Principal. During these years, she was instrumental in implementing a Bilingual Program at East Side High School in order to meet the needs of the Portuguese and Hispanic speaking student population. Mrs. Cardiellos was appointed Vice-Principal and Dean of Instruction in December of 1981. She was designated Principal of East Side in March 1982, making her the first female graduate to achieve this position. Mrs. Cardiellos serves on numerous committees and advisory boards m the ironbound Community. At present she is on the Board of Directors for St. James Hospital. In addition, she is an Educational Consultant to Port am TV. in Newark. New Jersey. Further, both New York University and West Point Academy have recognized her for her abilities in both language and literature. We the graduating class of 1984, take pride in recognizing Maria Manuela Cardiellos as our Alumni of Superior Merit. 16 In Recognition
