Published semi-annually by the Students of East Side Commercial and Technical High School, Newark, New Jersey • January 1953 “ cvirvr (A. ( ll({ rAfl(ev Principal These trying times call for courage for every one of us. We must face bravely not only the trials of the battlefield, the uncertainties of the future, and the burdens of world responsibility, but we must accept with stout hearts the task of making.a greater America for the sake of ourselves and of mankind. I congratulate the Class of January 1953 on its privilege of participation in the answer to this challenge. To the (Hass of January 1953: To me it seems only yesterday that the members of this class entered the front door and timidly went to the Auditorium to be assigned to their rooms. Yet it was nearly four years ago on February 1, 1949. From shy little girls and awkward lads you have grown into charming young women and splendid young men. My hope is that your intellectual achievement, spiritual growth, and character development have kept pace with your stature. A happy future to all of you! -ct Vice Principal 3 Advij iscr I say to you farewell, Cod speed, and good luck. I say it with a gladness that you have achieved your goal of getting a high school education, and in a school that is so conducive to the development of fine, understanding, tolerant young people. I say it with a sadness that our four years' active association is now at an end. But our feeling of friendship, our loyalty to our school and to each other will he with us forever. ZeuiJuiJ, 4 t4viOjelo Counselor My association with you has been a pleasant and unforgettable experience, one that I shall cherish the rest of my days. In my dealings with you I have tried to guide you into activities designed to serve your particular interests. Without your co-operation and confidence, no measure of success could have been realized. May the ensuing years find you on the road to success, health, and happiness. 5 N c1 r n i k i £ sv c vf- J? This was the beginning of our class and the start of four hectic but wonderfully exciting years. It seems funny now, looking back over the past, and thinking of the experiences we had. Our Freshman days were tormented by up stairways and down stairways, elevator tickets and upper classmen. They seem to have been just yesterday. Our first dance was an afternoon dance in the Boys’ Gym, during our Junior year. The girls looked as pretty as flowers and it was a good thing because that’s what they were—wall flowers. The boys looked very nice and as neat as pictures and they might as well have been pictures, because all they did was hang around the walls. In all, our afternoon dance wasn’t any worse than any other, it just seemed that way. The dances and other red-letter days will always be remembered, but along with these we will never forget the daily occurrences. The tests in Latin that we hardly ever passed; the Spanish club and the songs we learned there; the cabbage smell from the Chem. lab.; the thrill of going on our first hook and waiting in Joe’s for the movies to open; the strike we went on in Miss Macintosh’s homeroom, the bedlam in Mr. William’s homeroom and the Grand Central Station in Dr. Zachar’s; the crowded halls; the small lockers; the big football games; the auditorium programs; the antique books; and Mr. White’s paper hoarding are only a few of the common place things we will always remember. As Juniors we held our first election with the following results. President..........................................Elias Roman Vice President.......................................Carmen Rio We also held our first really successful affair. The 11A dance was the beginning of our night dances, and it was just a preview cf all the fun to come. The girls really out-did themselves, and the gym was a panorama of bright colors and beautiful girls. The boys who didn’t dance wanted to learn and the girls were willing and capable teachers. In 11A we felt wonderful. After all, we were just one step below the highest rank in the school. We were the 11 As, and in a few months we would be Seniors. The time passed quickly and in a few months we were Seniors. This was the exciting year we had been waiting for. In the first half of our Senior year we set a new precedent in the style of dances at East Side. We ran the “Hobo Hop”, a dungaree dance, with traditional ballroom dancing. For our “Hop , we decorated the gym like a box car. We held elections once more and the following changes took place: President................................Ronald Akialis Vice President...........................Shirley Chabra Secretary................................................John Wert 32 Our Senior Reception was held on May 2, 1952. The girls were dressed in various spring colors. The highlight of the Senior Rec, of course, was the mysterious ceremony at which the Senior A president gave our president the Torch in recognition of our becoming members of the select Senior group. The Senior A’s put on a very wonderful show patterned after the Arthur Godfrey talent scout show. The real thrill of the day was going to New York to eat and see a Broadway show. The next outstanding event in our Senior B term was the Prom. Who can ever forget the thrill and suspense of waiting to be asked? Who will ever forget the crazy merry-go-round we were on trying to get our gowns, shoes and purses after the bid for our Prom date was made? Remember the way the boys teased the girls about their getting tails, high hats and spats? It’s funny now, but then it was no laughing matter! Remember how we spent Prom day painting scenery and hanging it? We never thought we would get the gym looking halfway decent, but by five o’clock it looked pretty good. Prom night the gym was transformed as if by magic into a beautiful fairyland of Paris silhouettes, cafe scenes, and a realistic park with authentic park benches. This transformation was dwarfed in comparison to that of the girls into beautiful Cinderellas and the boys into handsome Prince Charmings. Each couple danced on clouds that night and walked on air with star dust in their eyes as well as in their hair. After a fierce battle in our final term at East Side the following people came out on top in class elections: President.........................................Elias Roman Vice President................................Shirley Chabra Secretary...................................Carole Roggerman Treasurer.......................................Richard Waters On October 17, 1952 we served as hosts to the Senior B’s. All the Senior A’s combined their talents to create a wonderful show. This show had just the right amount of dancing, music and of pantomime skits to make it one of the zaniest and cleverest ever seen at East Side. The dance which followed the show was one of the highlights of the day and it gave all an opportunity to become better acquainted. As usual, all the kids ended the busy and happy day with a trip to New York's Greenwich Village. We celebrated the Thanksgiving season by holding a ‘Turkey Trot on November 21, 1952. This dance, our last affair to which we invited other classes, was a gay success. On January 9, 1953 we held our “Farewell Dance . Everyone enjoyed themselves although we knew the end was drawing near. The girls dressed beautifully to celebrate our last class social and one could easily see that the boys had become socially minded and learned a great deal since our first high school dance. The next big event on the calendar is graduation day. A day of both gladness and sadness. We shall never forget all the fun and experiences had here at East Side and we will continue to remember our Alma Mater in the many years to come. S3 tViO.l t t ill Zcs We, the members of the Class of January 1953, being of sound mind, memory and understanding, do ma!:e, publish and declare this to be our Last Will and Testament: To Mr. McCracken, the head of East Side’s legislative and executive body, we leave the good wishes of the graduating class and the hope that the next time East Side is evaluated a new building will be complete. To Miss Erbacher we leave the delightful task of scheduling the study patterns and entertaining parents on their infrequent visits to the school. To Dr. Zachar, our adviser, to whom we arc very thankful and grateful, and who has worked so extremely hard during our four years, we leave our sincere appreciation and the memory of our peaceful and serene class meetings. To Mr. Rosamilia, our counselor, who has been both teacher and father to us by helping us solve our many problems, we leave the thought that all his children have finally grown up. To Mr. Springer we leave a nice peaceful homeroom which will shut up, sit down, and remember their personality records. We also leave a pair of binoculars to his grandmother so that she can watch over him closely. To Mr. Williams we leave a new jeep in place of the one that was abused hv our class and a homeroom that will listen to him. To Mr. Scott we leave our everlasting gratefulness for all he has done in helping us to decide what our futures will he and we wish him well in his remaining years at East Side. To Dr. Cavicchia we leave our hearty thanks for his constant efforts to make our Torch possible. We also hope that the classes after us will have preparations for their yearbook completed on time. We thank him also for managing our class rings and Torch pictures. To Mrs. Leitch we leave the joy of escorting future homemakers to the East Side day nursery and sending them to visit Saint James’s hospital. We shall never forget those exciting trips. To Dr. Weingast we leave a U. S. History classroom that will remember to stand up when they recite and who faithfully read their daily newspapers. To Mr. Grubel we leave a classroom large enough so that his students won’t have to be spread all over the third floor during a test. H To Mr. Fisher we leave a clean, well-supplied art room for future invasions by prom committees and poster squads. To Mr. Davis we leave a classroom with an efficient heating system which will constantly keep the temperature between 69® and 70° and our deepest appreciation for his active interest and indispensable help in making our prom decorations. To the custodians, especially our pal Jimmy, whom we shall always remember for their patient helpfulness whenever we held a class affair, we leave a year’s supply of mono acid ester of salicylic acid prepared by our chemistry class. To the Seniors we leave the thrill and excitement of preparing for the Senior Prom and a crying towel for the male members who will complain the day later that they spent all their money on the girls. We also leave them the air of superiority when they become Senior As. To the Juniors who have completed two years of school and who are hoping and praying that somehow they will complete two more, we leave the privilege of having U. S. History for the first time and the honor of receiving their class rings. To the Sophomores, who are now fearless and independent souls, having made the hurdles of their Freshman year, we leave Mr. Fast to remind them that the school day consists of eight periods and the pathetic cry of Dues please! To the Freshmen, who are poor confused souls, we leave a handbook of East Side, with a diagram of the school so that they will lx out of reach of the eager upper classmen who are so willing to lend them a helping hand. In witness whereof we have hereunto set our hands and seal this 28th day of January, in the year of Our Lord One Thousand Nine Hundred and Fifty-Three. The Class of January 1953 ELIAS ROMAN SHIRLEY CHABRA CAROLE ROCCERMAN RICHARD WATERS Signed, sealed, published and declared as and for the Last Will and Testament of the Class of January 1953 in my presence by its officers, who, at their request and in their presence, have hereunto subscribed my name as witness. By working hard he moved up to the Varsity squad in his Junior year and earned a varsity letter. Unfortunately Ronnie could not compete for honors in his Senior year since baslcet-was discontinued, but he will make basketball a part of his college life. Edward Miller Beyond a doubt Eddie has been one of East Side’s most valuable men both in basketball and track. In basketball Eddie served three years in which he showed great sportsmanship. In Iris Sophomore year Eddie came out for track, serving sis a half-miler and a sprinter, and doing a terrific job of both. In his Senior year, with the help of his coach. Mr. Schwartz, he ran his first year of Cross Country in which he served as [Cast Side's fifth best man. He is truly an athlete who will Ik remembered by all his classmates. Julius Pereira A crave for swimming came over Julius in his 9A term, but unfortunately there was at the time a shortage of water, and the swimming season was cancelled. A year later Julias got into the swing of things and really let his enthusiasm go by winning second place in the swimming relays. In his third year he achieved a better record yet by taking third place as an individual and second place in the relays. For his fourth ami final year he was elected Captain of his team, an honor which he most certainly deserves. « , MICHAEL VRABEL 44 GEORGE SCIIEIOEK Augustine Prieto Augic, Captain of the Cross Country Team, lias received both honors and recognition during his three seasons of running. Oik- of his best races was in the Newark Athletic Club Meet in which he placed fourth out of two hundred competitors, which was truly an outstanding performance. George Scheider George is known by all his friends as Satch”, one of East Side’s most outstanding athletes. In the course of his four years George served four seasons on our baseball team and three years on our basketball team as a forward. As a prominent outfielder. Satch is one of the ! oyN who aided East Side in achieving the city championship in 1950. George has proven himself a great ballplayer and an asset to his scnool. Michael Vrabel Mike has developed into a standout football player in this, his Senior and only year out for the team. With no previous football experience he has shown amazing strength and power. Mike applied a great season by going a berth on the all city team”. Knuto, as he is called by all of his friends, will always lx remeinhered as oik- of the strongest men on the team. Richard Waters Richie holds the honor of Captain of our Track Team with the greati-st of pride. His track career at East Side began back in his Sophomore year, and it was right then that he began collecting honors and the recognition of the student Ixxly. In his third year he took first places in the pole vault of city, county, and state, also participating in the hurdles. In his Senior, and greatest year, he set a record in the country by taking first place in the pole vault in city, county, and state competition. Richie has in his possession a trophy given to him here at East Side for setting a record in the city’s high hurdle's for the best performance of a two day track meet. She doesn’t seem to have a care. by EVELYN PIETRULEWICZ We saw the stately portals of East Side High open wide to welcome us. the incoming class, on September 12. 1949. We had eagerly awaited this day. and with great expectations we looked forward to our stay here. We were assigned to home rooms, and within a short time, had become acquainted with the faculty and the other students, and had overcome the complexities of the school building. Our first term ended, leaving behind unforgettable memories of the first episode in the beginning phase of our school life. Then in February, our class elections were held. An able and admirable foursome was selected to head our class during the oncoming term. We held our first dance during this term, and although it was an afternoon affair, it was moderately successful. By the time we had become Sophomores we had formed lasting friendships with our classmates. We learned to work together and to play together. We elected new leaders, they being: George Stankan............................... President Carmen Giordano..................._.....„..Vice-President Ann Lysiak.................................. Secretary John Morello.............................. Treasurer As we began our 1 IB term, our school was repainted and we obtained new drapes for our auditorium. We saw the birth of the Business Club in this term, and the Student Council was re-organized. We welcomed new members of the faculty and during the course of our stay, said farewell to others. Mr. Adickman, Miss Kartluke, Miss Ferguson. Mr. Main. Mr. Connolly. Mr. Barnes and Miss Raleigh left us. We purchased our rings during this term, and the pride with which we wear them will always be present in our hearts and minds. Our 1 1 B dance, the Starlight Social was a successful affair, as was our Leap Year Frolic of our Junior A term. The enjoyment we experienced was typical of all the high school experiences we had together. On October 17. 1952. we were officially recognized as Seniors. Everyone was dressed in regal finery. Pink roses adorned each girl, while the boys looked distinguished with their red carnation boutonnieres. Literally millions of camera shutters clicked to 50 take down on film for later years the gala festivities of that day. We danced on clouds to the music of our school dance band in the gym that afternoon, and then proceeded to Ruppert Stadium for us. and we anxiously awaited the spring, and the baseball season, even though we knew it would be our last one at East Side. We settled down to serious business, however, and after the class elections we began to plan our prom. Committees were drawn up end after many discussions we decided our plan of work. On December 5. 1952 we witnessed the exquisite results of our labors. The soft music and dim lights created an atmosphere of romance that still before we knew it. our biggest term had come upon us. As Senior A s we relaxed and played host to the Senior B's on Rec Day. which was May 1. We then relaxed a little from our attempts at getting money to finance our beautiful Torch, and set to work set out to enjoy ourselves, only now it was with the thought that soon, we will all part. Early in the term we held our elections. These were the results: As June drew nearer, we began to feel the tense, expectant joy of our coming June 17. 1953. As we accepted our key to life, we recognized the hitherto undescrib-able emotions which gripped our hearts. It was fear, and a loneliness, a feeling of maturity. Through the words of our valedictorian, we expressed our sincere gratitude to all who were responsible for that momentous day. We wept as we said farewell to all that we had met and known during our high school days. The door closed, but the four-year path led us to the door of adulthood, with a wiser and fuller knowledge and appreciation of life. We will treasure always the memory of our dear school and all that it stands for. The memories of happy times will linger always in our hearts; the friendships that were cultivated will forever endure. Our hearts will long sing the praises expressed in the Alma Mater ' even after our minds have forgotten the words. trip the light fantastic at various nightspots around the town. Later during the term we held our Hay Hop. which turned out to be a great success. During this time, plans for an additional building for East Side were made known to us. The city had purchased lingers in the minds and hearts of us all. Then we began work on our year book, and directing and producing the Senior Rec Show, which was the best ever. Then again we George Stankan... Henry Ragiel..... Ann Lysiak....... Hugo Thomas...... .....President Vice-President Secretary Treasurer graduation. With great solemnity we walked down the aisle to receive our diplomas on 51 Our musical tieviem To teenagers, all the world can be music. TUCKLEY This isTHE TORCH, a gleaming part Of Space and Time, of Brain and Heart. Its golden glow contains the lights Of lands and races, wrongs and rights: Italy’s brilliant tangerine. By Africa’s deep purple seen; I reland's enduring emerald, done From blue and yellow, sky and sun; Mel low-toned rays from patterned dreams Of patient China; vivid beams From orient realms whose sun is set And broken empires shining yet; Dark Poland’s dim nocturnal ray That turns to violet by day; America’s composite light, The sum of all the colors—white. Such isTHETORCH, not justa glint Of facts and faces, lines and print, But rays derived from everywhere Unite to form THE TORCH’S flare. DANIEL CATENA One of East Side's more modest athletes is Danny Catena, who began playing with the Junior Varsity in the Spring of 1950. He displayed outstanding skill in the outfield while playing with the JV. and is now playing just as well on the Varsity, Danny is known for being a good sport. DOUGLAS CISCO For one year Doug played on the East Side diamond, and although he played outstandingly well, he preferred basketball. As a Sophomore he was captain of the J.V. basketball team, and he showed outstanding skill later on the Varsity. His coach will probably tell you that if East Side had a basketball team this season, Doug would have been All-City material. He is looking forward to continuing his basketball career in college. ROBERT FRANK One of East Side’s greatest mermen is our own Bob Frank. Bob began swimming for our team in 1951, and he has competed in some outstanding swimming meets. Because of Bob's outstanding ability and sense of humor, he is liked by all of us. CARMEN GIORDANO Red, as he is known to us, is the type of fellow who always did his best at all times, and came through when the chips were down. On the gridiron. Red's versatility has made him a valuable asset to the football team, and no matter what position he played, he played it well. IRA GREENSTEIN Ira is a conscientious football player. He enjoys playing the game, and feels that it is a good pastime for any schoolboy. He says that his happiest time was spent practicing and training in preparation for the football games. DONALD KLEIN Ever see a guy make Varsity the first time he tries out for football? That's what Donald Klein did in his Senior year. Donald has played guard and tackle, showing his talents in both. He cer-tinly is one of the fellows who played a part in the success of the 1952 football team. 76 THOMAS KOPKO Tom probably has reached greater heights on the diamond than on the court. For three solid years, Tom has played outstandingly well on the Varsity baseball team. Sportswriters have honored Tom. because of his remarkable ability in baseball. Tom’s wish is to play pro baseball with the Chicago Cubs. Here’s hoping he’ll succeed. DANIEL LESSACK Lou Daniels , as he is known to the sports-writers. is one of East Side's most valuable quarter backs. Danny is an individual whose talent increases with experience. He played for our football squad for two seasons. Danny is a regular fellow who will be missed by all. WILLIAM MAGERKURTH Bill is one of the fellows who best fits the slogan, End, tackle, center, guard, hit your man and hit him hard. Bill has been on the football team for two years, and has played exceedingly well. He has proved himself to be not only a very personable fellow, but a hardworking one as well. WALTER MASSEFSKI Bcno” has great ability in both football and baseball. He won the hearts of all East Siders when he won the co-title of Mr. Football. He won All-City and County titles for both sports, and is highly honored by sportswriters. In his Senior year, he served as one of East Side's most outstanding cocaptains of the football team. It is our hope that he will climb the ladder of success in his sports career. Henry Kiglil JOHN MORELLO Johnny is our only great bowler. He averaged I 50 with the bowling team. Johnny's sports career does not end here. He began his baseball career on the varsity in 1952. One incident which is outstanding in our memory, occurred during the Barringer game, in 1952. when he hit a double which drove in two runs to win the game. That's our boy! Douglas Cisco Daniel Catena Edward Wolcnski Daniel Lessack George Van Deventer LATHAN PRIDGEN There is not a student who has not seen or heard of Lathan. He is a likeable fellow who has played football for East Side for the past three years. Lathan is a conscientious and outstanding player. East Side's football and baseball teams will be losing one of their most valuable assets when he graduates. Good luck to you Mr. Pridgen! HENRY RAGIEL Hank is tbe unsung hero of the glorified line. As a Freshman he joined the JV team. For three years he played remarkably well on the varsity, and was elected co-captain in his senior year. Hank is one of East Side's greatest guards, and because of his outstanding ability he has received three major letters and also placed on the All-City Team. For four seasons, Hank was a member of the Track Team, and co-captain of the team. In 1951 he was the City Champion shot-putter. East Side will long remember him. PHILLIP RICHARDS Phil is another outstanding merman. He has been swimming on the team since his Freshman year and splashed his way into city and dual meets. Phil was awarded an eight-inch letter for his swimming with the varsity team for the past three years. Outside work prevents Phil from participating with the team this year. JOSEPH SERRATELLI “Diamond Joe played second-base on the JV baseball team for two years. Joe is a conscientious fellow who slugged his way into the varsity team m his Senior year, playing in the keystone position. Joe’s talents are not limited to sports, you should hear his music! Good Luck Joe! JOSEPH TEJA Ask Joe his favorite sport and he'll answer you with one word, football,” even though he has been a member of the track team for two years. His football career began in 1949. Because of his great work on the JV, he was made captain in 1950. On the varsity team he played tackle, guard, and center with outstanding ability. With Joe's ability and cheerful disposition, we are sure that he will succeed in whatever he undertakes. HUGO THOMAS Hugo has played outstandingly well in both indoor and outdoor Track. He has been on the track team for two years, and has received a 6 letter for his achievements He ran the half-mile and mile, and placed third in a few of these races. Hugo is not only a good collector of money, as any Senior will tell you, but also a good collector of friends. East Side will certainly miss him! GEORGE VAN DEVENTER Van is one of the best quartcr-milers East Side has had in some time. He has been an exceptional member of the track team for two years. Through the years he has played, he has built up endurance with the cross country team. Becauusc of his outstanding ability, we arc certain that he will run his way to success. EDWARD WOLENSKI Ed is a mighty basketball player, who played center with the East Side team in his junior year. He enjoys playing both inside and outside of school. Ed. along with the rest of us. was very disappointed when East Side dropped basketball. A tall, personable fellow, he is very likely to succeed in whatever he undertakes. 78 80 4 r '■ i -y v s j f v K (Cr j'?'' y ( I v( V V — r- • •'i, “ i. v J;i xr, J t ✓ ■, V , i J J b kt . a v i % sS mnT£ftv S i .
