7 t07 xA Published Twice Each Year By Students of EAST SIDE COMMERCIAL AND TECHNICAL HIGH SCHOOL Newark, New Jersey JANUARY. 1949 the Class of January 1949, dedicate this Torch to our new principal, Mr. Henry A. McCracken. Much to our regret, we have known him for only one term and we are sorry that we will not have the opportunity to know him better. However, during the short time that we have known him, we have found that he is one who believes in a close relationship between the faculty and student body. We feel confident that the students, as well as the faculty, will work harmoniously with him for the general welfare of all. Thus, with these words of parting, we wish him suc- cess and happiness throughout his admin- istration of East Side High School. PRINCIPAL t£e ‘Pxutcifral | WANT to extend to all of you my sincerest congratulations on your graduation. It has been a pleasure to be associated with you and I am sorry that in the short time I have been here it has not been possible for me to get to know more of you better. My best wishes go with you as you leave us and I hope that the greatest possible success and happiness will be yours in the years that lie ahead. Do not forget to come back to see us and let us know how you are progressing, and if we can be of any assistance to you at any time in the future do not hesitate to call upon us. 2 $KHa Stfacfo Vice Principal Su ENGLISH JULIUS C. We tried to be brave and were anxious to learn whether our friends would be in homerooms and in classes with us. That day finally passed and we had our schedule cards with the rooms to which we were to report on the following day. The first year was a trying one. On top of getting accustomed to our new school in the way of homework, cut- slips, and so on, we learned that one of our greatest presidents had died. V. E. day came and finally V. J. day and the end of World War II. After all this had passed we found that it was February, and we were now Sophs . We were really going to get those Freshies now. But in the meantime we met our classmates from the Annex. Now real trouble began; some of us were complaining about geometry and biology, while others were complaining about typing and shorthand. In the midst of all this we had our elections with the following results: President..................................Frank Tanzola Vice President.............................Carole Notte Secretary.....................................Doris Emm Treasurer...............................Joseph Marinaro February 1947 rolled around, and we were now known as upper-classmen. As Juniors we had our first class dance. It turned out pretty well. We also got accustomed to a test every day in U. S. History. By the time we were finished with U. S History, we thought we knew all there was to know about the Pilgrims and George Washington. Election time rolled around again with the following results: President..................................Frank Tanzola Vice President.............................Carole Notte Secretary.....................................Doris Emm Treasurer.....................................Ray Palmeri As llA's, with some of us almost driving Mr. Palmer nuts with the doorbells, others thought that by this time we would definitely make good secretaries. This term we put a deposit on our school rings which made us feel that our big day was only around the corner. The day we thought would never come, came at last. We were now Seniors. We had our rings now to prove it. On March 5, 1948, we had our 40 Senior Ree' When we came to school that morning we really felt great. All eyes were upon us. In fact, we were even staring at each other. For the first time we saw all of the boys with ties and jackets We had a swell time that day—and also that evening The following week, we remembered that day all over again, because snapshots taken on the day of the Senior Rec were brought to school. As Senior B's, we had our Senior Promenade. It has always been said that it is just as exciting to prepare for an important event as it is to take part in it, and such was the case concerning our Prom. We didn't make money on our Prom, because we didn't sell tickets to anyone, and it was strictly a class affair. Thanks to Miss Gilbert and Mr. Jannone, we had a wonderful time. After the excitement of the Prom died down, we got ready to take pictures for the Torch. During this time East Side High School had its first square dance. This was another one of Miss Gilbert's wonderful ideas, and it went over big. In fact it was the talk of the school for days afterward. This brought to a close our 12B term. September 13, 1948 rolled around. We were back in school now as Senior A's. The first dance we gave was, yes, a square dance. As we expected, it went over as did the last one. We elected officers once again. The results were: President.....................................Frank Tanzola Vice President...............................Carole Notte Secretary...................................Bernice Kurdes Treasurer..................................Joseph Marinaro Senior Rec came once again, except that this time the girls didn't spend as much money in their outfits as they did during the last Rec, and most of the boys had their suits cleaned and pressed and wore them. Then came our Farewell Dance, and we were both happy and sad. Happy because we would be graduating in a few days, and sad because we were leaving East Side and our friends. On January 19, 1949, we were presented with our hard-earned diplomas. Our four-year stay at East Side was over. Although we didn't show it most of the time, we really appreciated Miss Gilbert and Mr. Jannone. If they hadn't guided us through our school years, we would never have had such a good time. Perhaps we didn't realize it until we re- ceived our diplomas, but we were, and still are, very thankful to be living in a country where we may still choose and enjoy our own work and friends. 41 Senio «2 DOROTHY PARKER Good-by! I cannot say it thus without a tear, Although it was not meant that I should weep. But can I help myself when time draws near. And just a memory is left for me to keep? Alas! Which road shall lead me to eternal light? Is what I ask, as I depart from school. Shall life receive me kindly in her sight. Or does this wall of night but hide a tortured fool? Alone! But not for long will I be on this trip. This road I travel without the aid of marks. And though I say good-by I shall not slip. But seek, until the light overcomes the dark. 7 e S utt ux RAY PALMER I We once were the truants, the wise ones—the cutters; But that's all in the past just now; We're leaving old East Side - - - For us they're closing her shutters. We'll miss the roar of the crowd and the sound of the band Which long marked the scene of the Red Raiders' stand. That romance thrived here, I need not mention; The Proms, the Rec, and, of course, detention; The rush for the lunch room and the clatter of dishes, Frightened us freshmen against our wishes; But now . . . we're leaving old East Side, They're closing the shutters; but we'll not forget her! Our mem'ries of her we'll wear as a crown. 43 Tflill utd '7e4t z ie i£ E, the Class of January 1949, of East Side Commercial and Technical High School, of the City of Newark, and State of New Jersey, being of sound mind, do hereby make and execute this, our Last Will and Testament: To Mr. McCracken, our new principal, we leave the duty of welcoming the new and industrious Freshmen. To Miss Erbacher we leave the task of keeping East Side as happy in the future as it has been in the past. To Miss Gilbert we leave the wallflowers at our school dances and proms. To Mr. Jannone we leave the newly expectant shorthand students trying to read into their notes that which is not there. To Miss Crummy we leave an empty homeroom, with all the students run- ning errands. To the remaining faculty we entrust the important task of instilling knowledge into those who reject it. To the next Seniors we leave the opportunity to make the TORCH burn brighter. To the Juniors we leave the building to change and to reconstruct as they see fit. To the Sophomores we leave thoughts and hopes of graduation after only two more years of hard labor. To the Freshmen we leave free cut-slips as a reward for taking leaves of ab- sence from certain classes. To all the student body we leave a better cafeteria, more social activity, eleva- tors instead of stairs, and less complicated text books. To the office staff we leave a continuous line of tardy students. To the Hall Patrol we leave our much-used and much-abused corridor passes. To the school nurse we leave the formula for making our temperature rise, and our knack for telling those little white lies. To the school in general we leave our names engraved on desks and upon the walls. In witness whereof, we have hereunto set our hands and seals this gradu- ation day in January, One Thousand Nine Hundred and Forty-Nine. Here we will reside for the next four years. It seems that the Seniors consider us an essential part of this school, but we can't imagine why. Oh, oh, they want us to purchase pins and boosters. Of course, so early in the game, we meet Mr. Hecht who is so earnestly promoting the sale of the Announcer. 9A—EDUCATED FRESHMEN Dear Diary, No more embarrassing initiations for us. We now know all the ropes. We even had a party which was made possible by our adviser, Mr. Sherr. A wonderful time was had by all because of the music, punch, and cookies. 10B—SOPHOMORES Dear Diary, Our class seems much larger, and no wonder! Many of our classmates have arrived from the Annex. Now we know why the Seniors took advantage of us, the ever-willing freshies, last year. It seems there is such a thing as class dues which all have to pay. Well, that's life. 10A—STILL SAPS Dear Diary, We have a new adviser in our midst. You see, Mr. Sherr had to go to the Annex and Dr. Cavicchia is replacing him. Things are really beginning to take shape now. It is election time, and we are promised a chicken in every pot . The truth is that we didn't know half of the candidates so we voted for those whose names we liked. 1 IB—JUNIORS Dear Diary, We have now climbed half-way up that ladder. It looks as though we may actually reach the top. Guess what! Our old friend, Mr. Lumb, has been relieved of the tedious task of reward- ing all wonderful students with detention in Room 220. The job is now Mr. Adickman's. Many of us who thought he would be a pushover have actually received a great shock. Oh well, you can't be right all the time. Imagine our surprise when Mr. Adickman came bus- tling, full of energy, into our history class. Do you know what was on the other side of the river that Washington crossed? We just received a knock-out blow. Mr. Wilmot is going to retire in June. Wonder WHO the future holds for us. We had another election with the following results: President, Tom O'Malley; Vice President, June Ryan; Secretary, Shirley Held; Treasurer, Mike Christadore. 59 11A—STILL JUNIORS Dear Diary, Have you ever had the feeling of superiority? We now have our first taste of it. We just received our class rings. Just look at all those hands go up in class. A lot of us took advantage of summer school this year. Another election and the results: President, Steve Policastro; Vice President, June Ryan; Secretary, Shirley Held; Treasurer, Mike Christadore. 12B—SENIORS Dear Diary, Ah! Happy Day. Here are we, the center of attraction. Listen to this: the social calen- dar involves us in some way or other this year. Everywhere you look, you see us. By the way, that WHO that the future held for us was Mr. McCracken, our new prin- cipal. Now it's Senior Rec Day, October 22, 1948. We certainly are having our ups and downs today. We girls will always be grateful to Mrs. Borton for allowing us to rest our weary and aching feet in her room. The boys also found her to be a valuable refuge and asset. She sewed many buttons for them. With Miss Gilbert's instructions in mind, we en- tered the Gym for the dance. What a success!! Are you talented? It's Amateur Show night, and we are the sponsors. Our ever-humor- ous Mr. Horwitz is master of ceremonies again. Our big night has arrived. The Gym looks beautiful and so different. The band is play- ing, and the lights are low. The girls, looking like queens, walk in on the arms of their kings. All is regal. This is certainly a memorable occasion. We just had another election. There was a change: President, Steve Policastro; Vice President, June Ryan; Secretary, Dot Skrobot; Treasurer, Jack Carey. 12A—SENIORS Dear Diary, Our last election over, we found that Mike Christadore had become treasurer again, after having been defeated last term, while the other three officers were re-elected. An important experiment concerning labor was conducted at our school. It was a very thrilling and interesting experience for us. We even made the headlines. We had our last Rec . On this day, we had plenty of rain. Despite this discouraging factor, a good time was had by all. Our last two dances, the Spring Dance on April 8th, and the Farewell Dance, on June 17th, were wonderful. However, the most important day is yet to come. Oh-h-h, it is here at last, our Com- mencement Day. We can't decide whether we are sad or happy. Well, these are all treasured memories now. We wonder what is in store for us. We will do all in our power to make the future a bright one and the world a better place than it has ever been. This is our destiny. 60 TdJe locute. . . . To Mr. McCracken, the good wishes of the graduating class, hoping that his remaining years at East Side will be successful and happy. To Miss Erbacher, the joys of the new study patterns. To Miss Higgins, the pleasant visits with parents To Dr. Cavicchia, our gratitude for his help and friendship. To our homeroom advisers, our appreciation for their friendliness and tolerance. To Mrs. Marsh, those students who wish to work up their own temperatures. To Mr. Horwitz, our thanks for the help he gave our Amateur Show. To Miss Gilbert, the students who have to be taught how to dance. To Mr. Adickman, the students who wish to have him work overtime. To the librarians, the Seniors with their essays. To the office staff, our hope that they may some day have their envelopes stamped properly. To Mr. Williams, our thanks for his patience with his notorious homeroom. To the Seniors, the TORCH with the hope that they will continue to carry it high. To the Juniors, the thrill of becoming Seniors. To the Sophomores, the thrill of their first school affair. To the Freshmen, the tricks to be mastered. To the entire student body, a wonderful faculty and hope that they will carry on the standing reputation 61 Well Remendte i . . . First day at East Side The summons to 109 Flashing our class rings around Our Senior Rec Mr. Sutton's hearty laugh in auditorium Wrecking the buses coming from football games Looking through stacks of pictures after Senior Rec Mr. Williams and his all-boy homeroom The Senior Prom The Announcer Chatterbox Mr. Hecht: Support your school paper The curly locks of Mr. Horwitz Putting the thermometer by the radiator in the nurse's office Dr. Zachar insulting himself in class Miss Wilder leading the Star Spangled Banner Class elections Breaking our necks to get everyone to autograph yearbooks Coming up the down stairways and going down the up stairways The card informing your parents that you did not attend school yesterday The peace and serenity of the locker room The boys who hold up the walls at dances That Senior feeling of superiority Baseball, basketball, and football games Selecting your best picture for the TORCH The arguments at class meetings Reading books the night before the book report is due A certain history teacher: How many buttons on Washington's jacket? The interested look during assembly Anxiety to see report cards Tampering with our schedules The Farewell Dance Our last assembly Graduation day 63 M 'A AV 1 Slxuu Hoot Sailing date: June 22, 1949 Date of arrival: June 22, 1960 Passenger list: The June Class of 1949 Captain: Steve Policastro Mate: Mike Christadore Stewardesses: June Ryan, Dorothy Skrobot The bright yellow sun shines radiantly on the deep, blue waters of Newark Harbor. Behind us we leave our Alma Mater, Newark. Feel a little sea-sick? Is there an empty feeling in the pit of your stomach you can't account for? As we approach the Island of Fame, we meet our two editorial women, Ann Leszkowicz, and Teresa Novick. They are writing editorials for the Archesi-Rotella magazine. Joe Helminski, mayor of the island, is here to welcome us for a day or so and to present his old colleagues with the key to the island. George Bazilauskas has just arrived at the ship with a telegram from Notre Dame. They request the honor of our presence at the stadium to see our own Pete Beilina, Frank Riggio, Thomas Sasso, Angelo Leonardis, and Richard Guillen defend their title as the undefeated. Guess what? We have field, box seats. It's an exciting day here. Listen! Well if it isn't Walter Specht an- nouncing the thrilling game. Look over there. Isn't that Ralph Giordano, the world's heavyweight champ, talking to Vic Strashinsky and Joe Osinski of the Teksab Basketball League? We've had enough candy, popcorn, and soda to hold us until next time. We will have to shove off now. With the aid of Police Chiefs Richard Marczak, Bob Kowalski, and Mike Liscinski, we are ushered back to the ship with the utmost dignity. Ascending the gang plank, heading for the Island of Fortune, are our famous Gallo-Milano models Dolores Fortunato, Henrietta Torre, Jean Fried- erich, and Angela Soriente. After some time of smooth crusing, we hit the shores of Fortune . We can hear the melodious music of Art Brachat and Ray Fella. 67 Standing there in the center of the crowd is Henry Wojcik holding a wreath of orchids, gardenias, and roses (bought from Eleanor Marczak's Flo- rist Shop). He places the wreath around Steve Policastro, and we all join in singing For He's A Jolly Good Fellow led by Dolores Holloway. Richard Madej has taken quite a few pictures of the gang. He is now following the crowd to the Club 313 . Dot Piotrowski is the proprietor and has become a second Sophie Tucker. Upon entering the club, we find charming Marie Piemonte and Pat Haveron checking hats. Cigars! Cigarettes! Familiar voices — Ann Steel and Virginia Califano. We are just in time for the floor show. Sh! In the limelight we see our ever-favorite Louise Lindia singing That Old Black Magic . The second act presents Louie Pydyszewski at the piano. They laughed when he sat down to play; but oh how they roared when he finished. Tapping their way to heaven are the lovely ladies in ermine, Jeanette Amoscato and Marilyn Kull. The fourth act finds us in a Latin-American atmosphere. Here we have Mary D'Alberto and Abie Vasquez tangoing to Jealousy . Now we have the attraction we have all been waiting for. She is a com- bination of Sarah Vaughn and Ella Fitzgerald, Paulyne Tucker singing It's Too Soon to Know . Drums roar, horns blow, and out trot the Rockettes: Beatrice DePasquale, Dorothy Middleton, Alyce Wojciak, and Mersedez Alfonso. Focusing the spotlight on the celebrities is Pete Olohan. Amid the laughter and jovial atmosphere, we spot Mike Christadore and John Rzeszu- tek, of the New York Yankees, swarmed by June Ryan, Rose luzzolino, and Sophie Stoia, the debutantes. We wind up the evening with the singing of Auld Lang Syne . As we leave the night club, the bright lights of the James Helme Theatre marquee catch our eyes. We immediately purchase tickets from Dot Piatek. In the lobby we hear Joe Fitzsimmons, Pete Partyka and Eddie McDonald, who will usher us to our seats. The lights dim and the M.C., Thomas O'Malley, appears before us. We are about to witness the first showing of The East Side Kids , starring Norma Nunes and Robert Kurdyla The cast also includes Audrey Coles and Frank Boccardi. 68 Directed by: Martin Dwyer, John Visco Produced by: John Ciuba, Vinnie Cordaro Written by: Pauline Narcavage Electrician: Ben DeCastro Costumes by: Hilda Teixeira Make-up and Hair Styles: Marcia Halperin. The applause for the great performance almost brings the house down. We drop in at Foley's Doughnut Shop. Josephine Preckajlo takes our order. To get on to the serious side of this trip, we will skip over to the Betty Edwards Hospital. In the quiet corridors of the hospital, adorned in crisp, white uniforms, are nurses Tillie Minetz, Katherine Growney and Dolly Randolph. They have done some great work during their stay here at the hospital. Thus far, we have been quite fortunate with the trip. We have finally arrived at the Island of Happiness. We no sooner descend the plank when we are met by the happy house- wives Julia Dzama, Joan Kurk, Emily Hynes, Irene Dolan, and Jenny Palumbo. They greet us with an invitation to their clam bake, honoring our arrival. The day is a bright, clear, sunny one. There is a great variety of food, beverages, and desserts to be had. At the pool we find the beautiful mermaids performing the water ballet of the season: Doris Bastardi, Josephine Costa, Marie Albano, Wanda Guber- nat, Jean Markwith, and Dolores Mont. The playboys Vinnie Cuozzo, Sonny Calabrese, and Mike Gerrity, find this all very interesting. They meet competition with Ed Smela, Joe Then, and Eddie Zawacki performing their water calisthenics. With expressions of awe and gleam in their eyes, Maryann Eustachewicz, Marie Schmittzeh, and Annette Gower, look on. Marching down the narrow streets, after the wonderful picnic, we are covered with paper snow, thrown by office girls and men, while our twirlers, Stella Rock and Dot Wichowski, display some wonderful talent with their batons. It is only a matter of seconds before we leave. The gangplank is pulled up, and we are on our way once again. Bon voyage! 69 1. 2. 3.
