SPORTS ARCHERY CLUB ADVISER—Miss Gilbert LADY PARAMOUNT ASSISTANT LADY PARAMOUNT SCORER ASSISTANT SCORER SECRETARY-TREASURER ASSISTANT SECRETARY-TREASURER Lillian Sandherr Marion Stankus Doris Gentile Helen Muraska Stella Majek Valeria Sluzy In 1937 Miss Gilbert introduced archery to the girls at East Side High School. Before long they became quite expert at it and entered the spring tournaments. They didn't walk away with all the honors but they did make a magnificent showing. Our class was well represented by such members as: Marie Corres. Doris Gentile. Magdalene Kircher. Wanda Kadolka, Stella Majek. Betty Mezichraiky. Helen Muraska, Martha Repke, Lillian Sandherr. Helen Schroeck, Valeria Sluzy, Marion Stankus. Elizabeth Woodard, and Gladys Wojaski. The ablest female Robin Hoods of the group were: Doris Gentile, Lillian Sandherr. Marion Stankus and Helen Muraska. Doris Gentile and Marion Stankus were high scorers in the last spring tournament and Marion Stankus and Lillian Sandherr represented East Side among the ten highest scorers in the state. In this year's N.J.A.A. final tournament. East Side placed fourth with Marion Stankus placing sixth in the individual state scores. The following girls obtained their emblems for which they had to average a score of forty or more for six ends. These emblems are coveted by all archers and each girl is determined to own one. Marie Corres. Doris Gentile, Helen Muraska. Lillian Sandherr, Valeria Sluzy. and Marion Stankus were the fortunate maids. The Archery Team (Marie Corres, Doris Gentile. Lillian Sandherr. and Marion Stankus) took part in the annual Panzer tournament. They had the unusual experience of shooting in a tournament at the New York World’s Fair. SPORTS GIRLS BOWLING TEAM ADVISER — Miss Gilbert CHAIRMAN — Evelynne Bialek Any Monday afternoon at 3:00 P. M. strange phrases such as set 'em up, spare, strike and in the alley could be heard coming up from the St. Casimer's Bowling Alleys. If one decided to investigate he would have found Evelynne Bialek, Lottie Fella, Verna Fix. Magdalene Kircher, and Stella Majek, Doris Gentile. Valeria Sluzy. Helen Muraska, and Marie Corres putting sneakers on their feet and pumice on their hands. He would also have seen Betty Mezichariky. Lillian Sandherr, Stella Wenk, Veronica Sagitas, Gladys Wojaski, Gladys Byk. Emily Skowron, Marie Corres, Geradine Vogt and Marion Stankus picking out and testing their bowling balls. The girls, under the leadership of their friend and adviser Miss Gilbert, are charter members of the Girls Bowling Club of East Side High School which was started in February 1939. Most of the lasses, bowling for the first time, have scores anyone would be proud of. Much credit is due Evelynne Bialek for her interest and leadership in helping to organize this popular club, These feminine bowlers have become good sports and they have con- tributed their share in organizing and starting a club which has become increasingly popular. BASEBALL TEAM FOOTBALL TEAM SWIMMING TEAM SPORTS BOYS Another June, another graduation, and another flock of athletes leave their Alma Mater. These athletes have sweated, plugged, and fought for East Side even though the going got tough at times. Some day we will look back and have fond memories of them. We will always be proud to say, They're from East Side.” These boys and girls typify the spirit at East Side in that they were always loyal, straight, and never failed to show the Red and White sportsmanship. We now submit for your approval, the Most Valuable Athlete of the Class of June '39; ladies and gentlemen—Henry Karczewski. Karch” is one of the greatest all-around athletes that the portals of East Side have ever received, Karch has been on East Side's football, baseball, and gym teams. Switching from end in 1937 to the backfield in 1938, Karch developed into one of the most accurate and long distance kickers in the state. Trying him out for the baseball team in 1938 for the first time Coach Butterworth found in Karch a great pitcher who turned out to be the ace of the staff. He helped no little in pitching the Red and White team into the Greater Newark Championship tournament. In 1937 Karch teamed with Dan Cantalupo (an alumnus of East Side) to bring the State Gymnastic Championship to East Side again. Besides his activities at East Side, Karch has won a place on the Y.M.C.A. team on which he placed second and third on the parallels and rings respectively. To you, Henry Karczewski we say. May your life be as successful as your athletic accom- plishments. Sidwa wins in 1:101 Sidwa wins in 1:07! Sidwa wins in 1:061! You've probably heard this many times before: Sidwa wins.” Edward Sidwa started swimming while at grammar school where he found a place on the playground team. Starting as a free-styler, he developed into the best breast- stroker that has ever been awarded a Newark diploma. In all exhibitions during the 1938 and 1939 seasons he broke the existing state record and then he snapped his own city record by 3.3 seconds. So, here's luck to a future Olympic star. Helping East Side in its endeavors on the diamond was John Mihalik, the team's snappy shortstop. Win or lose, it can be said for John, he was in there fighting. Although not on the first squad, these boys helped in the pinches: Louis Keefe, Ben Kaminskas, and Walter Zebrook, pitchers; Ed Zebrook, catcher; and John Fillimon. Besides Karczewski, the gridiron team loses: Robert Smith, end; Joe Gaska, Thomas Helme, backs; Joe Valentine, Nick Nosach, Ed Zebrook, tackles; and Philip Peck, center. Ralph Guzzi was assistant manager of foot- ball and manager of baseball. lames Clutterback is the only senior member of the track team that graduates. Philip Peck was manager of the track team. Well fellows and girls; plug, sweat, and fight for the things you want; but remember—the ones who take the knocks of life with their chins up and show their sportsmanship are the ones that usually win out in the end.
