Martin Gets MVP Award The presentation of the Carl Waldrop Most Valuable Player Award to punter Ronnie Martin highlighted East Rutherford High School’s fall sports program last night. Martin, a senior, led the SWC in punting and was named as punter for the Spartan- burg Herald’s All-Area team. Other Varsity football award winners in- cluded Ivey Smith, who received the Cava- liers’ Frank McCullough Most Improved Player Award and Rodney Walker and Ed- die King, who both received the Gordon Neal Team Before Self Award. Otis Carson was presented with the Forest City Lion Club Award for being East's best back and Chris Fisher received the Forest City Jaycees Best Lineman Award. Defensive back Tommy White received the Wade McKinney Sportsmanship Award and linebacker Dewayne Cuthbertson was presented with the Friel B. Jones Most Cou- rageous Player Award. Jimmy Douglas was named Most Valuable Player from the junior varsity ranks. Bobby Hamilton was named best back and Keith Hunt was tapped as best ‘lineman. The Randy Fisher Memorial MVP trophy for the freshman squad went to Bill Davis, while Rodney Jimmerson was named best back and Rodney Marshall was recognized as the team’s outstanding lineman. Brenda Wright, who had earlier been named AIl-SWC, was named MVP for the East girls’ tennis team. Dana Koone was recognized as being the most improved member of the squad. Eric Nanney was named MVP of the Cava- lier cross country team. Debbie Self, earlier named to the All-SWC team with teammate Ginger Cannon, was tapped as MVP of the girls’ volleyball team. Cyndi Justice was recognized as be- ing the most spirited member of the team and Sherry Morrow was named most im- proved player. September 26, 1984 the Volleyball Team suffered a great loss when team- mate Susan Elaine Humphries had a seri- ous car accident which led to her death. In memory of Susan the team wore black bands around their left arms through the remainder of the season.
