We embarked upon, unforeseen adventures in a foreign atmosphere struggling to float among a sea of new faces —strangers who have since grown as a family. East Rockaway High School has been our vehicle — our means of transportation — to laugh in as well as cry in. East Rockaway High Sohool has cut a clear path for those who wish to be trailblazers in the journey of life. Our journey thus far has been a unique one — a challenging and special one. We have reached our.greatest glory in the obstacles we have overcome, although these obstacles often became road blocks. However, the road is now open and we are ready to take on new challenges. Since the world' of high school has already been thoroughly explored, we are ready for the second step. It will be a step forward into the unknown — a vital part of the journey that is life.Dear Mrs. Orzano. As we prepare for our final departure from East Rock-away High School, the members of the Class of ’E3 4 find it difficult to express in words what the past four years have meant to us. At the start of any JOURNEY such as ours, the cautioning but reassuring words of our advisor always prove to be irreplaceable. To you we’ve entrusted our lives — our safety. our success, our happiness — even if only for a short while. And though at times we encountered great obstacles. you always managed to steer us straight. Your navigational expertise is surpassed only by the tenderness, sincerity, and sense of justice that guide you as an individual. You have touched each and every one of us whose pleasure it has been to be a part of your life. Your everlasting optimism has provided us with the incentive and initiative to always reach for the stars. With this in mind, we dedicate our JOURNEY to you for your never-ending support. Affectionately. Your Class of ’B 4 One stop along the JOURNEY that always proves to be outstanding is the Junior-Senior Prom. This year's Prom, "We’ve Got Tonight" was one of the best. The setting was Theresa's on a cool June evening. The results were memorable to say the least. Of course as always, the glamor of the Prom was preceded by shaving cuts, sunburns, stocking runs, and last minute jitters. but all of these were far surpassed by the incredible fun that always accompanies the Prom. "We’ve Got Tonight" was a terrific night to remember. and a moment of smooth sailing for all.WORLD’S 5 STATES IN 19 HOURS Phenomenal. Exhilarating. Fun. These words don't do justice to our unforgettable Junior trip to the World’s Fair in Knoxville, Tennessee. We crossed five borders on a 1 0 hour bus ride which yielded lifelong memories. Entertainment, international cuisine, as well as amazing exhibits were all part of the experience that we shared. The display of warmth among everyone enlightened all the events which occurred, teaching us the meaning of cooperation, sharing. and maturity.HALLOWEEN AT ITS BESTThis is wood. Eddie . . . from a tree. No eat. build! It's a "dog-eat-dog ’ world.MR. MICHAEL MAIDEN Perhaps one of the most important administrators that the class of ’0A has encountered along its journey through E.R.H.S. is the superintendent, Michael Maiden. Mr. Maiden’s ardent attempts and successes at bettering E. R. H. S. and the school district as a whole have made him possibly one of the finest superintendents in East Rockaway’s history. His persistence and determination in providing the best education as well as educational facilities is greatly appreciated by the senior class. He will always be remembered as a man of progress and efficiency. MR. ROBERT PARRY Finally settled in to his administrative position, Mr. Parry has been an avid supporter of the Senior Class of 1 984. His leadership, sensibility, and understanding towards the needs of the student body have provided for the community a high school with more spirit, efficiency, and educational promise than has been previously demonstrated. The Senior Class extends their sincerest gratitude and best wishes to Mr. Parry for making our last three years at ERHS enjoyable ones. MR. EDWARD CROWLEY Through his years in administrative positions, Mr. Crowley has dealt with students of all ages. He is now dealing with grades V-Q. which makes his job that more difficult and challenging. Through the years the Senior Class has come to know him very well. We are grateful to him and we will always remember him as a man of leadership. 20MR. GERALD HDNIG In his first year serving E. R. H. S. as assistant principal, Mr. Honig has proven to be an extremely effective administrator. His ability to handle even the most serious of challenges along the journey have earned him the respect and admiration that he deserves. Mr. Honig’s good humor and positive attitude have helped to make the class of ’8-4’s trip through East Rockaway High School both enjoyable and rewarding. THE BOARD OF EDUCATION On a regular basis, the Board of Education meets to discuss significant topics regarding changes and improvement in the East Rockaway School District. All of their proposals have been made for the benefit of the student body. Unfortunately, this year marks the last year of service for 3-year President, RoseMarie Brande, and two other respected members, Dolores Maggio, and Al Kachinowski, Thanks to their time and concern are extended to all the members of the Board from the Class of 1 984, as well as the whole student body. PTA The Parent Teachers Association is a group of devoted individuals who give of themselves to benefit the students of ERHS. Their continued support through scholarships, and the always memorable Rock Rivalry Journal, has proven to be irreplaceable to the Senior Class of 1 984. Studies do point to lowered SAT scores, the need for college remedial courses in basic skills and to many thousands of high school graduates who are unemployable and functionally illiterate. Into that rather dismal setting come some bright rays of hope as the Class of '84 enters the world. Many of your classmates have distinguished themselves and brought credit to the school. You have achieved a National Merit Scholarship semi-finalist, several Regents scholarship winners and successful Mathlete, Mock Trial and It's Academic teams. Many graduates have been accepted into fine colleges while others have solid p.lans to start careers in the business, health and art worlds. Unfortunately, others in the class have either set no personal goals , or have closed their options by failing to succeed in either a strong academic program or in a vocational program at BOCES or at East Rockaway High School. The hard work and dedication did not go unrewarded for the hardworking Rocks. Each player this year learned a great deal about sportsmanship. effort, and most of all teamwork. Being a part of the Rocks is demanding both mentally and physically. This year’s team proved that they were quite capable of meeting the demands placed on them. The team’s success was due to the efforts of coaches Jim Ayers, and Carl Demasi. Their unending patience will never be forgotten. Kleoak At the completion of its sophomore season, the Mock Trial team looks back on an admirable record in courtroom competition. Though only some of the team's members are aspiring to enter the legal profession, they all accept their task with unyielding dedication. Led by Mrs. Brock, the team has taken part in a thorough study and realistic application of the law in realistic court situations. This group of students must approach a particular civil case from both sides of the issue, digesting and assimilating every detail available. Their presentation of their work in the Nassau County courts has won them high esteem. IT’S ACADEMIC Our "It’s Academic" team, valiantly coached by Mrs. Jean Clark, has made a tremendous mark on the high school since its birth at E.R.H.S. three years ago. About a half dozen students, with interests and knowledge ranging from baseball to "Madame Butterfly", periodically meet to pursue matters of trivia and of great importance. Largely contributing to the team’s outstanding success are the frequent and intense practice sessions, which familiarize the competitors with the categories in question. Perhaps the most significant accomplishment of this team is the positive effect it has had on the entire student body, instilling pride in academic success.DRAMATICS CLUB The dramatics club has been one of the schools largest organizations ever since it started in 1 977. Approximately four times a year, students take a trip into New York City to see a Broadway play. They are required to attend a pre-lecture on the play and to write a follow-up critique. The dramatics club fulfills a vital function, and we wish them many years of continued success. I iflti'rrn COMPUTER CLUB This brand new club at E. R. H. S. consists of computer learned students who devote their time and energy to spark insight and interest in students who would never have been able to take a "byte” out of the computer world. They also do a service to the Computer Science department in general by maintaining order and efficiency in the Computer room. Under the direction of Mr. William Teresco, this innovative group has been given the guidance and skill it needs to help further computer literacy in East Rockaway. 106SENIOR BLOOD DRIVE A service Co the school and community at large, the Senior Blood Drive is an event which requires a great deal of strength and courage from its participants. The senior’s first experience as blood donors was both exciting and rewarding. Many thanks are extended to the drive’s coordinator Mrs. Mildred Brock. Mrs. Brock’s service to the drive has been of irreplacable value to the school in general. Participation in a cause as worthy and valuable as the Blood Drive has proven to be an excellent experience to all and has hopefully sparked interest in the community’s blood program. The club holds regular meetings to discuss and present ideas on how we the students, can prevent accidents due to drunk driving. This year, the school held S. A. D. D. Day. wherein speakers came and classes were held to educate students on the problem. Students and faculty were very receptive to this assembly and to the S. A. D. D. club itself. The goal was clear and simple. We wanted to do the best we could possibly do. We met our goals along the long rocky road that led to an overall Rock Rivalry record never to be forgotten. “Scotch on the Lochs” proved to be one of the finest freshmen entrances to be performed on the stage; while “Heir France" paved the way for sophomore entrances to follow. That particular entrance earned the class of ‘Q4 a comfortable second place in the Rock Rivalry standings for that year. Rock Rivalry was an experience that the class of 'Q4 began with psyche and an almost mysterious devotion. Its incredible history and reputation are never fully understood by those who have not yet participated in it. However, for the class of ’8 4. Rock Rivalry has been all it was said to be. Awesome! Exciting! . . . and very worthwhile, Rock Rivalry is indeed. 125JUNIOR CLASS OF '84WINS THE CUP! We did it! The class of 1984 had reached the ultimate in Rock Rivalry achievement in its junior year. We won the coveted Rock Rivalry Cup! As juniors we experienced a great deal of what Rock Rivalry is famous for. We came together as a class, we "took our passion and made it happen." Winning the cup meant a great deal to the class, yet more importantly it gave us the opportunity to grow. Victory gave us the strength we needed to carry out our aspirations in the real world and "sea the light" we had so often dreamed of. In the mystical land of ancient Egypt, the class of '84 found itself faced with perhaps the greatest challenge we have experienced as a group. Our experience proved to be a part of our journey where success would play a major role. Winning isn't everything however, as we learned in our senior year. The cup is a marvelous and fascinating thing, yet nothing can compare to the feeling of togetherness and friendship the class of '84 experienced in victory as well as defeat. Rock Rivalry has given us the direction to take a goal and see it through to the end. It has also shown us an accurate meaning of the word "Sportsmanship," a far greater concept than that of a silver cup. In short, we've won Rock Rivalry in more ways than one. In our Junior year we reached new heights by winning the cup. In our senior year we reached new heights by coming together as one working machine. 127The Freshmen present “A DIFFERENT SLANT ON LOVE” Six weeks. Six weeks of hard work, of meetings, of headaches, and of fun. It’s called Rock Rivalry. The 48 year old tradition that makes our school stand out from the rest. It has instilled in us a new sense of maturity and responsibility that will last us the rest of our lives. We've all discovered new interests, new friends and new talents. Our class has been bound together with a special kind of love and pride shared only by friends. Learning is something we’ve done a lot of this year. We learned how much work had to be done, and also how much work we forgot to do. However, despite our mistakes, we still consider our performance a huge success and we are very proud of ourselves. “Thank you” is a phrase not heard enough during the hectic weeks of Rock Rivalry and we would like to change that. First of all we thank Mr. Severino without whom Rock Rivalry would not have been possible. We also thank our class advisor, Miss Martine Mishuck who pulled us together when we were falling apart. We are proud to say that the people who our dreams had a strange effect on were the judges. It took an enormous amount of drive, motivation, and creativity to put on that performance. Rock Rivalry is still a learning experience for us even after one cup and three years of competition, but the experience we have gained over the last three years has helped us to come closer to our goal. It is things such as this that make Rock Rivalry such a worthwhile experience. 132The Seniors Present . . . “ACROPOLIS NOW” The Senior year for the class of’84 was truly a year of discovery — especially with regard to Rock Rivalry. Though our victory as Juniors was undeniably a momentous event in all of our lives, we experienced a far more important kind of victory our last time around. While it is true that we fell short in this year’s competition for that glittering goal — the cup — our journey to Greece took us a great deal farther than we had anticipated . . . It was evident from the celebration of last year’s “triumph” that wrhen people are in a festive mood after a successful venture, it is easy for all to remain together to share the occasion. But when we encountered a situation of disappointment (in March ’84), we came to a remarkable realization — that we were there to support each other. The feeling in the air when the final results echoed through the gym was not one of defeat, but one of unity. In reflection, perhaps we were more fortunate for having had such an opportunity to test ourselves as people and as friends, and to finally learn the full meaning of Rock Rivalry. Chief justice Berger said in a press conference yesterday, “Gay people should be allowed to express their feelings toward each other anywhere. I pray for Mom and Dad, God, that you will help them to be good parents — strong in ways you want them to be. so I can look up to them with admiration and feel confident that their instruction is right. Help me, dear Lord, to understand my parents. Remind me that when I don’t get my way it is because they love me and not because they want to be mean or deprive me of a good time. Help me, God. when I become stubborn and refuse to listen, to accept the fact that they have wisdom and experience because they were once teenagers, but I have never been a parent.
