Dear Mr. McAnulla At last the time when we depart from East Rockaway has arrived. It is at this time we applaud you, Mr. Mac. Your patience and understanding have taken us past the realm of traditional class activities. Aiding the Honduran hurricane victims, contributing to various charities, producing a prom to be remembered by the school, as well as the class and this volume itself, an unprecedented work, are accomplishments which give us pride. We enter adulthood knowing how to deal with life in general as well as other people. Our unsuccessful ventures and relationships hove strengthened the bonds among class members as well as increased the character of individuals. Our exit is marked with joy, perplexities and sadness. Eventually these emotions will subside, leaving us with memories of our years as the class of '76. Thank you for listening and advising, but most important, thank you for caring. It was you who inspired us to be THE class with class. With love. The Class of '76 CLASS OFFICERS FRESHMAN (from left to right) Secretary — John Simeti, President — Barbara lanniello, Treasurer — Jane Miller, Vice-President — Jimmy Smith. SOPHOMORE (from left to right) Secretary — Linda Correnti, Treasurer — Jane Miller, Vice-President — Mark Miller, President — Ruth Johnson JUNIOR (from left to right) President — John Francis, Secretary — Maureen Edgar, Treasurer — Jane Miller, Vice-President — Mark Miller. SENIOR (from left to right) President — John Francis, Vice-Presidents — Ruth Johnson and Brian Connors, Secretary — Linda Decker, Treasurer — Jane Miller. MR. ROBERT MORSE MR. HENR Y FREUND DEAN OF STUDENTS Will the following students please report to the dean's office immediately? This infamous sentence is one we will all remember long into our lives. It typifies the job of Mr. Edward Crowley, dean of students. During our years at East Rockaway, Mr. Crowley has been friend as well as foe to all. He has often been seen chuckling over an outrageous cut excuse, and is one of the rare personalities that is eager to listen and more than willing to help with anything. We feel Mr. Crowley has successfully maintained a respectful environment through his earnest interest and devotion. PRINCIPAL Our principal can only be described as a friend, administrator, counselor, and enthusiast molded into one. His obvious pride in every aspect of our school enables him to wholeheartedly react to any situation or problem. He is often seen pulling a student into his office to discuss what might seem to be a trivial thing, for Mr. Morse concerns himself with the students os well as the faculty on a very personal level. Mr. Morse has many fine qualities which make him the very respected and honored principal he is, one who totally devotes himself to his job and his responsibilities. We feel proud to have known and been under the supervision of Mr. Morse, the good guy at East Rockaway High School. ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL Since Mr. Freund has been assistant principal, he has originated a truly new definition of the job. He has made it more important due to his ability to handle his work efficiently and quickly. Mr. Freund has judged wisely and practically in all school situations. Amiable as well as devoted, he has openmindedly carried the burdens of his job and has proved himself to be a most competent administrator inside our school system. MR. EDWARD CROWLEY STANDING (l«ft to right) Mr. Roger Humes, Mr. Peter Hughes, Mr. Earl Cole, Dr. William Louis. SITTING — Mrs. Carol Leahy, Mr. Harry Bunting, Miss Corolyn Schempp. B E 0 0 D A F U R C D A T I 0 N DR. WILLIAM LOUIS SUPERINTENDENT A man with infinite responsibilities. Dr. William Louis, is constantly on the run handling hectic and unpredictable situations and keeping the walls of East Rockaway High School as strong and as sturdy as ever. He is a man who uses his open mind and efficiency for the improvement of the school, and after years at his job, Dr. Louis has excelled in determining which ideas will prove to be assets and which will not. Though rarely seen walking the halls of the rockpile, every student is aware of who is behind the scene, braving the important decisions that keep our school intact. He has shown throughout our years here that he will always make use of his earnest, responsible efforts to maintain such an excellent school system. STUDENT COUNCIL ADVISOR — MR. JACK RICHERT STANDING (from left to right) SENIORS — E. Murphy, I. Correnti, R. Johnson, G. Contoldi, N. Gallo. JUNIORS —C. londeros, S. Wipfler, B. Goodspeed, D. Brown, M. Rocioppi. The girl’s football game, the Senior-Faculty game, and the contribution to the Gull are just a few small accomplishments of this year's Student Council. Their biggest achievement this year was a basketball marathon held in order to defray the cost of a brain pacemaker operation for a little boy inflicted with cerebral palsy. K I S T T C A H F E F N In this day and age when appreciation is a thing rarely expressed, it does one good to add an occasional word of praise. This gesture is deserving of the kitchen staff at ERHS for the admirable changes they have made in the cafeteria style and menu. The staff has changed the standards of the food they serve, as well as their methods of serving it. The variety is appealing to ice-cream freaks, as well as vegetarians, and it is worth the occasional wait to be rewarded with the delicious taste of steak or the bite of a fresh apple. One knows change is good when those who are exposed to it acknowledge it, as the students of ERHS do the kitchen staff. We thank you. Four score and seven years ago But they said I was supposed to teach Math!!! Yes my doughter is the Editor-in-Chief. HOWARD Many words can never express our sincere thanks for a man of many words, our advisor. Mr. Honig has been both understanding as well as demanding during the ragged course of time that this yearbook was being conceived. The true meaning of a yearbook and its context was gradually impressed in our minds. Mr. Honig was always there when we needed him for giving advice, helping with decisions, or |ust looking on. To us, the editors of the 1976 Bicentennial Edition of the ROCK, he was the backbone of the whole works, for without him there would never have been those 5 a.m. mornings, those frustrating moments of realizing a mistake, studying for four midterms while finishing a deadline, or the proud satisfaction we all felt when the book was finally, but regretfully finished. To Mr. Honig we graciously offer our most heartfelt thanks, for he is truly a man of dedication and strong character to whom we owe more than just this column of thanks. It takes a truly special lady to undertake the production of the Senior Play. Daily rehearsals, coping with everyone's schedules, and disciplining an energetic cast,' are part of the job. We were very skeptical about the success of the play. On Wednesday November 19, we found an astonished cast after the tremendous performance of George Washington Slept Here.” We did it and Mrs. Howard has been smiling ever since. We would also like to personally take this opportunity to thank the Wipfler family, Mr. Martin Severino, Mr. Steven Lander, Mr. Mark Estridge, Miss Cathy Braun, and Miss Toni lanniello for their help in recruiting pictures for our endsheets and various other places in this yearbook. The spirit of East Rockaway would certainly be non-existent if there should be no organizations available to meet the needs of the student, teacher, and family. The PTA and DAD'S CLUB are two such organizations that take top billing in contributing activities and service to the school. The PTA has made possible the Senior Banquet, the Junior Shakespearean trip, scholarships, blood banks, and the Rock Rivalry Journal through their continued dedication. The members are all interested workers who strive to contribute to the many experiences we, as Seniors, have had throughout our years here. The DAD'S CLUB is also constantly renewing its activities every year, and includes the annual Varsity dinner, spectator buses to games, and the observation tower among their list of contributions. Both groups actively participate in every aspect of school life and in doing so gain the respect and thanks of the youth. They deserve every bit of praise for giving the students of East Rockaway something else to be proud of. A black sky at 3:00 in the afternoon sent forth hailstones the likes of which no one in East Rockaway had ever seen. What could be a better setting for a prom called Sunshine of My Life? The weather eventually did clear, and, at eight o'clock in the Crystal Suite of Terrace on the Park, two hundred people, many of whom were '‘ill that very morning, began to experience what many in attendance claimed to be the best prom ever witnessed by E.R.H.S. Overlooking the Manhattan skyline at a height of eighteen stories, people danced to the music of Hollywuud, the only band in the past three years capable of playing a prom theme song. As the dancing became more vigorous, the room began to shake and thoughts of disaster quickly flashed in and out of everyone's mind. The evening came to a close with the coronations of King Billy lingman. Queen Diane Finnis, Prince Jimmy Smith, and Princess Anne Campbell. The five hours flew past, taking with them a sizeable chunk of our treasury, but leaving the Class of '75, the faculty members, and us with many beautiful, happy memories. .A'jby i a t arnmrv ,!W FOOTBALL 75 UNTIL IT WAS GONE. . . REPRINTED FROM THE GULL NOVEMBER 21, 1975 For the last three months we’ve thought, waited, and wondered. The feelings inside of us were torn. We believed it would never come. Day after day, we devoted ourselves. We sweated, prayed for the end of sprints, and screamed to the point where we were mute. But we were proud of what we were doing. Proud for ourselves, our leaders, our colleagues. It meant more to us than anything. It was the basis of life since school began. Now it was finally upon us. We were approaching the final leg of our journey. We all gathered early that morning as we usually do. We talked, trying to keep our minds apart from what was happening. We ate, laughed, and tried to relax together, yet knowing it was impossible. After a little while we left to go get ready. It would take an hour or so. As the time elapsed, we could actually feel the tension building inside anxious hearts. Without a word to one another, we prepared ourselves, we prepared ourselves mentally as well as physically. To break the monotonous silence, words of encouragement were passed. All of this preparation inevitably dwindled down to the long-awaited, yet unwelcome moment. The time was now. We were at our destination. Many thoughts, memories, and friendships flashed through our minds, but we knew we must somehow forget them until the next two hours were done. They were to be the longest, most emotional two hours we have ever spent together. After that we could think more seriously, more gratefully, more respectfully, of each other and our accomplishments. And with the National Anthem playing in the background, it struck us with full force. We were about to play our last high school football game. These cheers and more were only fragments of the enthusiasm that was seen on Columbus Day, Oct. 12, 1975. Between innumerable backbreaking practices, Monday morning bruises, trying to find jerseys to wear, and obscene psych sessions, our ROCKS marched into Marion St. to take on our opponents. B A D M I N T 0 N As in any sport, a team has to be progressive where there are always new rookies joining the veterans each year. The 1975 badminton team had the misfortune of losing many starters to graduation last year and was consequently destined to have a losing season this year after having to recruit many young and inexperienced players. But the outcome differed from that prediction as the squad took 3 of their 8 games, with only 2 seniors to hold the fort. The underclassmen held the team together with their inconquerable potential and spirit, and will truly be the backbone of the badminton team for 1976. This pain was short-lived though, for as we ran back to the bus trying to keep warm all the emotion that had built up over seven weeks seemed to burst out in cheers and screams. All those drills and running sprints (or walking them when Ms. Kunz wasn't watching) had come to an end, never to return again for some of us. This hockey team that had grown so close practicing together and sharing in defeat and victory piled into the locker room for the last time. As we left the new gym, some of us stopped to look out over the hockey field where our memories now lie. We had the greatest collection of clutch performers any school sport has ever seen. Despite their collective inexperience they never knew when to quit. Whenever the game was close, we squeaked thru.’’ So sayeth the great man. This is well exhibited by their record. They beat Lynbrook by one 1 point; Levittown by 6; VS North by 8. They trailed Hempstead in a crucial game by 50 pins going into the 10th frame, and nosed them out. The star performer in the clutch was Bobby Kuehn, who came through in most dramatic fashion many times. Hank Benning was the steadiest performer game after game. Paul Pisani improved with every match culminating with the league high series (61 7) in the very last match. Tommy Couglin bowled his best when we needed it the most. Vince Mirabelli, only a sophomore, was a surprise making the lineup during the second match, and remaining there. Tommy Donza proved to be a good sixth man when he came through. The team seemed to be struggling throughout the season to gain respect, the one thing that meant more than anything. Attitude was a serious problem early in the year. The team seemed to be going from bad to worse as the season wore on. By midseason the ROCKS were buried in last place. It seemed the only thing going for the ROCKS was their own pride. By going out on the court and giving it all they had, they finally gained the respect they wanted. To the members of the team, this was more important than anything else the season had to offer. To their coach, Mr. Harry Freisleben, the Varsity team owes all their appreciation and thanks. And to themselves, they owe their final bit of pride. Their determination was shown throughout the losing season in a crucial game where the team won in triple overtime. The support from the students was greatly appreciated. CHEERING ’75-76 Few people ever take the time to add a note of appreciation or a nod of support for the ERHS cheering squads. Isn’t it about time these girls were commended for enduring the cold, rainy, football season through to the long trying basketball games, always with a smile, and always with a note of optimism. They are the force which keeps the teams fighting a little harder through their loud shouts of victory and defeat. We the Freshman Class invite you to our first attempt at Rock Rivalry. We realize now how much work is needed to put on a Rock Rivalry program. We have all learned a great deal about cooperation, sportsmanship and most of all, about the true purpose of Rock Rivalry — to create a feeling of unity and to be able to combine everyone's talents and efforts toward a single goal. Our entrance takes place in a small circus. There are mysterious goings-on that force the Manager to get some extra help. Throughout the remainder of the play, intermingled with song and dance, you will learn ‘who done it” and why. To the other classes, we wish the best of luck, especially the Juniors, who gave us a lot of help. We would like to thank Mrs. Providente, our class adviser, for helping us through the year with a smile. Last but not least, we would like to express our appreciation to Mr. Severino and Mr. Richert, who are still waiting for us to come to them with a million problems. THE SOPHOMORE CLASS OF 1978 PRESENTS INCA REDIBLE' ’ Tonight the Sophomore Class of V8 would like to invite you to relive the past history of the Inca Indians. You will see how the clever trickery of an unwanted outcast can result in an honorable deed. As the Spanish warriors try to force the villagers to give up their precious gold, they are soon confronted by the loyalty of Tupac, the lonely peasant. As it comes to the close of our second Rock Rivalry we are grateful to have the wonderful experience of working together once again. As a class, last year we learned the feeling of unity and the reward of working to achieve a common goal. This year has been as successful as last year in that we have put forth our best efforts. We would like to extend our gratitude to our overall chairmen Carol Mayell and Mark Wipfler, and to our entrance chairmen Lori Calabrese and Chris Brande. For the past six weeks they have helped us make it through our second Rock Rivalry. We would like to give special thanks to our class adviser, Jeffrey Herschenhous, who is not only our class adviser, but our friend. We would like to wish the best of luck to the Freshman and Junior classes in this Rock Rivalry. But a special wish of luck to our sister class, the Seniors. We wish them the best of luck tonight and much success in their future years. THE JUNIOR CLASS OF 1977 PRESENTS 'WHO’S NEXT, REX?” Parades! Parades! Parades! Music, music, music and lots of fun are what happens at the big Mardi Gras in New Orleans. Shreve Tuesday, the beginning of Lent, is the day when the big parade and celebration takes place. The Junior class would like to take you to New Orleans in March, 1904 when there was a problem in selecting Rex, King of the Mardi Gras. The mayor and his wife, who were traditionally the king and queen of the great event, had in that year relinquished the throne to their eldest son Beauregard. Beau, however, was very dependent on his brother, Reginald, for planning the parades and festivities. In addition, he had another problem. If he were to become king he would have to choose his queen from among his seven girlfriends. Sit back, and see how this predicament is neatly cleared up. Our three years of competition in Rock Rivalry have helped us make our performances better and given us valuable experiences of working together. We would like to thank our overall chairmen Barry Akrengold and Marigrace Racioppi for a fantastic job and our entrance chairmen Larry Pecorella and Sarah Wipfler for their untiring efforts in making our production a success. Our appreciation goes to Mr. Severino and Mr. Richert for their help and guidance throughout these past six weeks. Our class adviser, Mr. Kenneth Klein, father of a new baby boy, deserves a tremendous thank you for all of his devotion to our class. Last, but certainly not least, good luck to all the classes, but especially our sister class the Freshmen '79. Go get 'um Frosh! itttttmii' THE SENIOR CLASS OF 1976 PRESENTS rrJEST A MINUTE MAN” At least twice daily, we Americans are reminded of our nation's two hundredth birthday. Although it is only mid-March, a lack of interest has developed regarding the subject. We the class of '76 believe that the bloodshed and courage needed to attain this country’s independence was far too great to ignore tonight, so we will present our interpretation of events leading to that fateful July 4tb. Tonight, the last Rock Rivalry night, what we share as a class will remain with us for years to come. Looking back upon the three previous Rock Rivalries, we recall the joy, sadness and disappointments that contributed directly to the people we are today. We thank Mr. Richert, Mr. Severino and all the teachers who worked to preserve Rock Rivalry as an institution. It has given us opportunities and taught us lessons no classroom situation could. Our efforts this year are a culmination of the talents and ideas of many earnest individuals in addition to those of our entrance and overall chairmen, Linda Correnti and Maria Indelicate; John Francis and Barbara lanniello. Also deserving of credit for their continued participation are our chairmen of past years; Doug Dake, Nicky Gallo, Ruth Johnson, Cheryl Levine and Mark Miller. To those parents who spent their weekends with eighty-five guests, we express thanks for the use of your pianos and homes over the past four years. An all inclusive thank you goes to Mr. McAnulla for being there and believing in us. A resounding Good Luck echoes to every class — Sophomores, our sister class, listen well, you deserve the best of everything tonight and in your future experiences. PRELUDE TO A TRIUMPH Chants of “We are number 1 “ have swelled our throats since we were freshmen. Rock Rivalry has brought our class the many pleasures and disappointments that it has brought others, yet our accomplishments and fun will never be forgotten. How often do we think back to those frosh days of the “Feverish Fifties”? At our first attempt, we presented the awestruck audience with greasers and collegiates, bobby socks and saddle shoes, and tricycle riding down the aisles. The viewers on Rock Rivalry night still recall the difficulty in keeping track of our story after. . . was it nine? . . . curtain closes. Our Pop’s Shop was one which will go down in East Rocka-way High School history as being the most unstable stand ever erected. We were hit with a sad fourth place, with yet three more powerful years to go. Sophomore year found us in the land of Sherwood Forest, with Robin Hood, dancing trees, and the merrymen among us. Despite a dazzling soph performance and script, we slumped into a third place. The Castle of Nottingham was our triumph, and our improvements in one year were a premonition of what was to come. By this time, we had become the class of procrastination, with Thursday afternoon finales, and split-second locations for celebration on Rock Rivalry Night. The Wheel of Fortune was our high point as Juniors, as we all remember screaming We got a standing ovation. We got a standing ovation! , when in fact we hadn’t. But still out to kill the world, we reached a first place in stand with one of the most original ideas ever seen. The car we presented was awed by all, as was our second place mural. Still striving higher after this second place overall defeat, we had only one place left to go, and we wanted it badly. Senior year brought out the best in all of us. Freaks as well as the jocks joined together in a fight which wouldn’t have been successful had they not. We even had an organized band — “Da Na Na, Da Na Na, Da Na Na . . The bicentennial era of 1776 set our stage, and our stand was the well-built Independence Hall. Working until the early hours of the morning at every project, we successfully plugged a one point victory. There is not a soul in our class who doesn’t remember the pressure and anxiety on that famed night, March 19, 1976. Juniors were screaming. Seniors were fairly quiet. The judges seemed to take forever, even longer than our Freshman year. Many emotions went through our minds at that time, of all the pride, love, and respect we had for each other and our class with class. Finally the announcer was in front of us. Our overall chairmen were standing side by side, in peril and yearning at the same time. Hearing “The winner of the 40th Annual Rock Rivalry, with a one point victory . . totally sunk our hearts. Then, . . the Seniors! Bedlam was the only word for all the happiness and joyous tears to follow. Mr. Mac almost got trampled while trying to avoid the head of the ecstatic parade out of the gym. Up to room 112 for the victory cake, but the mystery of the missing cake is still a puzzle to us all. Too delighted to sit in a classroom, all 100 crazy lunatics marched down Ocean Ave., the silver cup in the lead, with a weekend of celebration ahead. For four years we have followed that cup, and finally it was ours. Winning Rock Rivalry is the birth of that extra bit of spirit which too often lies stale in a class’ heart. Here is another point in time where an adviser is an essential asset to the perseverance of a class, always giving, and with never a note of doubt in winning. Mr. Mac has been more than that, and how can we end this meaningful section of our high school lives without a few more thoughtful words of thanks. With a kiss goodbye, Mr. Mac, Rock Rivalry has make it for our class — we did everything, and we did it the best... for you. 175 ► OUR PAST FRESHMAN— ROCK RIVALRIES FABULOUS 50’S SOPHOMORE'S THE SENIOR CLASS OF 1976 PRESENTS rrGEORGE WASHINGTON SLEPT HERE” CAST Newton Fuller.................. Over the years the bagel has become a very sentimental object to the Class of '76. We’ve had our own bagel jingle, and most remember The Great Bagel Money Ripoff in our Junior year. We even went as far as to think of using it as our Entrance theme in Freshman year. (We should have.) It is with very special thanks that we salute all those bagel salesmen, for it is because of their long hours that a good part of this yearbook is able to be paid for. 188 SENIOR HONORS AND A WARDS (from loft to right) REGENTS SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS: Chariot Conroy, Brian Connor, Richard Bruun, Bennet AbromnoH, Ken Moody. PAULF ILLY H, BARjygA H SHERYL J. GINA C RANDY L. CHERYL L. CARMEN A MICHAEL S JANET M EDITOR'S NOTE This is the last page to be completed for the Bicentennial Edition of the Rock. I have been delaying and avoiding this page from deadline to deadline knowing that it would officially bring to a close an important portion of our senior year. This is the culmination of hundreds of hours of work, weekends planning layouts, all night marathons, headaches, worries, conflicts, photographers without film, and more, but an end result of overall satisfaction. My staff and I have lived from deadline to deadline. Each page which was compiled and so completed a phase of our senior year. Then all of a sudden the yearbook work was ended and so was three quarters of our last year in high school. The yearbook responsibilities started sooner than expected with an early June 15, 1975, first deadline. We had no summer to haggle over themes. A staff meeting was called at which time we discussed, battled, and expanded upon many possible ideas. We realized we could not overlook the obvious — that our country was celebrating its 200th birthday. How could we pass up this meaningful event which would be observed all over our nation? All in agreement, we accepted the theme and proceeded to develop and interpret the year 1776 in our own way. We were extremely fortunate to be a financially well-off class. Four years of hard work helped to increase our coffers so that we were able to add something special and different to our yearbook. Our senior pictures are in color, a parchment section and other special effects have been included all to enhance the quality of the finished product. A good deal of the yearbook is a direct reflection of the editor’s likes and dislikes, but she must never forget the purpose behind the yearbook, to contain the pleasureable and unforgettable moments of four high school years so that whenever the covers of the book are opened each student will experience a time of nostalgia. She must take into account the preferences of material which the student body have while she is paginating”, for she is their representative. An editor hopes to produce the best possible yearbook. This year we had an extremely talented staff of editors. My Assistant Editor, Annie Campbell, was an organizer, writer, as well as a dear, true friend. Annie was always there when I needed her for last minute calls, errands, articles — you name it. Her constant support made the rough times seem more bearable. My Photography Editor, Maria Indelicato, went beyond the realm of her responsibilities and took on other positions. She assisted greatly in the little, but important, projects that complete a yearbook. I had an excellent Art Staff under the direction of Art Editors, Tammy Humes and Lynda Decker. Gina Contaldi, our Business Manager, kept up the financial end of the book. There was never a question in our minds that funds would never be sufficient. My Literary Editors, Linda Correnti and Kathy Nicoletti, added a touch of professionalism through their journalistic articles. Karen Kuhnel and Susan Straub, Typing Editors, took care of the tedious last minute typing jobs, which add the finishing touches to each page. I really enjoyed working with these talented people and in the end result we have not only a product of all our combined efforts, but have gained a certain respect and friendship with one another. How can I end the Editor’s note from my heart without again expressing my appreciation, love and respect, for the man who got us started; our yearbook advisor, Mr. Honig. He was always offering advice and gave the kind of support needed to stimulate us to turn out the best possible job. He always kept the pressure on us for he knew this would be a unique and challenging yearbook from the very beginning. Thank you for being there when we needed you.
