'1 • . . V Oatorul Ml OU tXumt 3 qjJ.'a IGAuaA (gft GO PLACIDLY AMID THE NOISE HASTE, REMEMBER WHAT PEACE THERE MAY BE IN SILENCE. AS FAR AS POSSIBLE WITHOUT surrender be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly clearly; and listen to others, even the dull ignorant; they too have their story. Avoid loud aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain bitter; for always there will be greater lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans, Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Exercise caution in your business affairs; for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals; and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself. Especially, do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity disenchantment it is perennial as the grass. Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with imaginings. Many fears are bom of fatigue loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be, and whatever your labors aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul. With all its sham, drudgery broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be careful. Strive to be happy. I'll not willingly offend. Nor be easily offended; What’s amiss I'll strive to mend And endure what can’t be mended. No love, no friendship Can ever cross the path of our destiny without leaving some mark upon it, forever For each of us there are miracles We have only to step silently aside And look upon everyday things Appreciation We can barely remember that frantic day in June, 1970 when the newly-born class of 1974 met for the first time. The class was a turbulent mass of chaos and confusion when we made our first big decision and elected you class advisor. Four years and four Rock Rivalries later, you have made us immeasurably proud of our decision. The seeds of unity and cooperation you planted in the roots of our class blossomed over the past four years into the success of the prom, fundraising drives and rock rivalries. We could truly fill every page of this yearbook expressing our intense appreciation and gratification for all the time, energy, and understanding you have given us. Though we use two small words to express our sentiments, they come from deep within 162 hearts. From all of us to you we sincerely say thank you, for everything. May the road of our friendship run far into the future. The Class of 74 Special Thanks We, the Class of ’74, wish to express our deep gratitude to Mr. Gerald Honig, without whose help the production of this yearbook would have been impossible. Faced with the demanding task of deadlines, Mr. Honig always seemed to be a source of encouragement and guidance. Our magazine drive would not have been successful without his inspiration and determination to make it so. Years from now this yearbook will serve as a looking glass through which we can review our four years at East Rockaway High School. We will always remember Mr. Honig's invaluable help as we glance through the pages. Dr. Louis Dr. Louis, the superintendent of our school, has shown the type of leadership expected from a man in his position. His wise decisions have made East Rockaway High's students proud of their small school. We, the Class of 1974, thank him for his patience and understanding which have been evident throughout our high school years. Sitting: Mrs. Carol Leahy. Miss Carolyn Schempp Treasurer, Mr. William Brown, Mr Harry Bunting President Back Row: Mr. Peter Hughes, Mr. Earl Cole, Dr. William Louis, Clerk. Board of Education Behind every great high school stands an equally great Board of Education. East Rockaway's own Board of Education is living proof of the truth of this statement. Each year, thanks to the tireless efforts of this miniature Congress, innovations and improvements rain on ERHS from text to teachers, from clubs to classes, from menus to marking systems. Let's hope the progress never ends. Mr. Freund When Mr. Freund took over the job as Assistant Principal 2 years ago he was well-prepared. Formerly as Dean of Students he was able to win over the student body with his humor, friendliness, and competence. As Assistant Principal he has shown how capably he can run the school curriculum and help students with their problems. Mr. Morse Mr. Morse has been Principal of our school for several years. He is a modern, up-to-date Principal and has tried to bring helpful reforms to our school. He has also taken a personal interest in the students. His understanding and administrative ability have won him the respect and admiration of the student body. Mr. Crowley The position of Dean of Students is one of controversy which takes a special kind of person to fulfill. This difficult job requires patience and a unique personality, both of which Mr. Crowley possesses. He has succeeded in instituting and sustaining discipline at ERHS. His devotion to the students is evident as he solves daily conflicts. We are fortunate to have a man like Mr. Crowley working with us. P.T.A Standing Mr. Crowley (Historian), Mrs. Vito (2nd Vice President), Mrs. Schaeffer (Treasurer). Mrs. Turner (Recording Secretary) Sitting Mrs Yoswe.n (Corresponding Secretary). Mrs Doherty (President), Mrs. Brown (Past President), Mrs Kammskas (Vice Pri sif i nl I Rock Rivalry, student scholarships, and blood bank drives are just a sample of this group's gallant efforts in East Rockaway. We're Pretty Jhankful and Appreciative. DAD'S CLUB i ‘tt to Right: Mr Miller (1st Vice President), Mr Brown (Treasurer), Mr. Weiss (2nd Vice President), Mr. Barth (Presi-1 i nt) Vf ssmg Mr. Dragone (Secretary). Football dinners, cheering trophies, team buses and school spirit are just a few examples which show that Dad's Are Doing Something in East Rockaway. We're forever grateful for all you've done for the members of the class of '74. Student Council Mr. Jack Richert — Advisor This year, as in the past, our Student Council has worked hard to make the school year more enjoyable for all concerned. The Council's achievements include a concert early in the year by the Power and Light Company. A first this year, which will hopefully be continued in the future, was the ERHS-vs-LHS Girl's football game The council is working along with the faculty towards a more effective system for treating the cutting program. For their work this year we offer our thanks, for their work in the future — Good Luck. Left to Right: T McMahon, P. Schwartz,). Smith, M. Norwick, K. Behr, E. Laskowski, C. George Hall Cops 61 Drug Council The Drug Council consists of a small group of Juniors and Seniors. If you were to ask anyone about the council, the only people capable of telling you anything about their work would be the Junior High students. This is because the council gears all of its work around them. About once a month members of the council go to assigned seventh grade classes, not only in our high school but in St. Raymonds too. Their main objective is to supply information about drugs, alcohol and cigarettes to these students possibly making them aware of what is going on around them. The Council was independently started three years ago by students who felt a need to deal with any problems confronting our underclassmen. Each year this job is appointed to both concerned and dedicated people. This year's involved students are Tom DeMott, Joni Yoswein, Robert Deutsch, Tommy Doherty, Nancy Conforti, Emily Lerner, John Wipfler, Gary George, and Jerry Gremse. The Drug Council hopes that you will join them in their fight against the existing drug and alcohol problems in East Rockaway today. 62 iliw If you have strolled by the auditorium at 3:15 and wondered what all the activity was, you can stop wondering. It was just our twirlers having their weekly practice under the supervision of Miss Denise Zahn. The Varsity squad, consisting of 8 girls from the 7th — 11th grades, was responsible for some fine entertainment during half time of ROCK home games this past year. In 73, with an added obstacle of a fuller schedule, another great ROCK team reached for that goal, and for the first time in our school's history, SUCCEEDED! The season began in a hot and humid August. Uniforms drenched with sweat and helmets holding the heat like a furnace. Calisthenics, individual drills, scrimmages and sprints, are all part of the building and developing for the beginning of the season and from then on, the individual preparation for every team. The season opened with Lutheran, and as if it was a tradition, we soundly defeated them 36-6. A trip to Dobb's Ferry, our 2nd victory, and we were ready to play Eastern Military Academy who had challenged us for the championship last year. With a win over Eastern, Dalton, and a very close margin of victory over Fordham, Xavier was the only team standing in our way of the league championship. Our title was regained by defeating Xavier 38-12. St. Agnes was the last home game of the season and we set a record of being undefeated at home for 3 consecutive years. The final and most challenging test came on Thanksgiving Day at Southside H.S.. Our defeated season was being challenged, but what seemed more important was that it was against a South Shore III team and with their defeat we could prove to all doubters that the ROCKS were truly a great team. We went into the game for the first time as underdogs and at the half it seemed as if the papers would be right, but they were losing — to the tune of 26-7 — E.R. had finally gained what they were looking for — the undefeated season. What can you say about a team that had a defense that allowed an average of a little over 8 pts. a game, were league champs and were undefeated. E.R. is now on a 14 game winning streak. We are undefeated at home for the past three years and league champs in 72 and 73, and co-champs in 71. What seems to be symbolic, we've had the coach of the year for three years running. Hopefully, the precedent set over these last three years will become one of East Rockawa s lasting traditions. ______ JR. VARSITY VARSITY Front Row: P. Kelley, R. Johnson, T. Reider, B. Hawthorne. If you come to see the games you will see the five starting Varsity players joni Yoswein, Mary Keahon, Diane Finnis, who are returning members, Marianne Goldman, a Freshman, Diane DeLeonardis, and loanne Gross. The rest of the team consists of Maureen Campbell, Onda Beseris, Linda Levison, Claudia Warner, Ellen Kirch, and Mary Beth Rowland. The girls are coached by Miss Faucher, and co-captains Joni Yoswein and Diane Finnis. They opened their season with an unlucky game against Mineola which they lost by a score of 37-29. However, Joanne Gross scored ten points and earned the honor of being high scorer. The team managed to pull through their second game against Baldwin with a score of 34-31. Some of the other games played during the season were against Carey, Uniondale, West Hempstead, Valley Stream North and Sewanhaka. The Junior Varsity team, consisting of Freshmen and Sophomores, is coached by our new gym teacher Miss Kunz. Anne Campbell helps in this job as the captain of the team. They opened their season with a victory against Mineola, 22-15. The J.V. team consists of Susan Brown, Kathy Chel-ius, Anne Campbell, Diane McIntyre, Barbara Hawthorne, Debbie Jones, Barbara lanmello, Lisa Muscettola, Jeannie Lane, Barbara Devereuax, Eilleen Turner, and Mary Ellen Nawrath Every girl is dedicated to bringing to her sport the kind of recognition it deserves. Finishing 9-3 in league play and 12-6 overall East Rockaway shared second place with Roosevelt in the South Shore IV league behind Malverne. Since East Rockaway had a winning season they were entitled to participate in the Nassau County playoffs. However they were eliminated by Uniondale in a very close game in the first round. Led by captains Robert Deutsch, Larry McCondichie, and Steve Hefele and coached by Mr. Friesleben the Rocks combined superb teamwork and outstanding defense to produce a winning team. Next year's team will be missing many key players since seven of the guys are graduating. Despite these losses next season looks promising due to the return of some familiar faces such as Tom Doherty, Bill Heiple, Paul Sheshene, Bill Mahnken, and Richard Dillon. As a result of their winning season the Rocks earned a spot in the Nassau County Playoffs. The place: ERHS gym, the opponent: Uniondale. The crowd cheers as the Rocks break through the paper door of the locker room to begin their warmups. The fans applaud as the players are introduced. East Rockaway wins the tap and the bleachers shake as the Rocks score the first basket. Shouts of encouragement are heard from the stands and the bench. Superb defense by both teams keeps the score close. Uniondale starts to pull away, leading at halftime. The Rocks retreat to the locker room to plan their second half strategy. East Rockaway begins to rally, urged on by a chant of defense from the crowd. But Uniondale comes back strong holding on to the lead. The crowd doesn't lose its enthusiasm, cheering until the final buzzer. Despite outstanding defense and 32 points by Steve Hefele, Uniondale wins 63-57. Nevertheless the students and parents of ERHS are proud of their varsity basketball team. 1974 J. V. Basketball Team 91 First Row: D. Goodspeed, A. Stern — Managers. Second Row: T. One of the twelve teams here today will go to the state championships. East Rockaway's first man Ed Carneglia just bowled his first ball and nine pins toppled to the ground. Well that sounds lika a good start and the team which consisted of Peter Carroll, Ed Rose, Richard Ong, Ed Carneglia and Paul Puchelt, did start off well. After the first two games they were in fourth place and things looked good, unfortunately, the good luck did not last. Our team finished the day in eighth place but finishing eighth out of twelve teams is not bad in the County Playoffs, especially when you are a team with only one senior and are representing the smallest high school in the county. We have a lot to be proud of. During the regular season the bowling squad did spectacularly again led by their coach Mr. Pollock (better known as H.X.P.). In practices the sport attracted an average of 73 people a week and reached as many as 100 twice. The team finished just out of first place. In the South Shore Playoffs they beat out all the teams in their section and then entered the County Playoffs. It was the first time in five years that our team has made it to the County Playoffs. Peter Carroll was the star again this year with an average of 179. He was nosed out for the title of top bowler in the league in the last game of the last match. Eddie Rose ended the season in fifth place with an average of 170 and he joined Peter on the All-Star team. He also bowled the highest series in our high school's history 613. Mr. Pollock has high hopes for next year and I'm sure the team will have another successful season. However, creating posters, building door signs, holding cake sales, marching in the Pep Rally parade, and even getting thrown in the showers as a victory celebration are just a few of the activities that go hand in hand with cheering. Most of us think of them as the people who do our jumping, yelling, crying, and, shouting. As always, they have done a fine job with the help of Mrs. Brown, their advisor and mother. Coach Wetherell is not overly optimistic about this season but he feels that if everyone on the team works hard and puts their all into it, it will be a winning one. He knows he has some fine talent to work with. Ken Kunow is an outstanding runner who is trying to break the school record in the mile this year, john Wipfler is a promising runner but he was injured and won't be back till the fourth meet. Tommy Ziegler and Glenn Levison run in the quarter mile and half mile respectively and Glenn is hoping to break the school record in his event. Robert Deutsch, Owen White, and Fred Barth are the weight men (shot and discus) and Ron Capone, a very talented, broad jumper hopes to break the school record in his event also. A track meet has 16 events and track is basically a sport of individual competition, so a winning team must have members who possess the winning spirit and the willingness to work. I believe that the team can use their talents to make this track season a successful onp Top Row (left to right): S. Andreano, S. Sargeant, R Lennox, B. Connors, R. Aue, D. The team began last year when a few interested students confronted Mr. Cosenza and asked him to help them form a new school team. So, Mr. Cosenza became the faculty advisor to the golf team. Last year merely exposed the boys to the rules of the sport and they played about five matches against other schools. This year, Mr. Cosenza is mainly concerned with showing the students the techniques of playing golf. He has succeeded in setting up approximately twenty matches with a league made up of high schools like. Valley Stream Central, North, and South, Calhoun, Mepham, Southside, Lutheran, West Hempstead, and Oceanside. The team is basically young boys; there are mainly freshmen and sophomores. The co-captains of the team are Cary George, Billy McCivney, and )erry Murphy. Mr. Cosenza is sure that a few of his younger students like Bobby Coon and Timmy Reese will have very promising futures as golfers. This year the team is being realistic about their abilities but future years are sure to be optimistic for these new golfers. (left to right): F. Stano, T Harding, S. From the approximate 80 member association Diane jennings is president and Ellen Kirsch is secretary-treasurer, with their faculty advisor being Miss Joan Faucher. The G.A.A. is an outgrowth of the Rho Gamma Leader Corps which only represented a small group of our athletically inclined girls. This new organizaion exhibits a much larger body which shows how the girls in this school are as talented as the boys. The only requirement is that you must have played on a Varsity or junior Varsity team starting in 1973. The purpose of the organization is to support the girls sports teams. Since our school budget does not provide any money for girls activities it was up to these ambitious young ladies to raise the needed money themselves. They have succeeded by selling cosmetic kits and food at girls team home games, by having a basketball game against the DECA students and a girls-Faculty volleyball game. With this money they were able to purchase shorts for the V.C. teams and new sweatsuits for outside sports, as well as to contribute $50 to the cheerleading squad for their new uniforms. As you can see this is one organization which is really involved. Their future plans are to buy shirts for the Varsity teams and jackets for the G.A.A. members. After the uniforms are completed the girls will not only play like a team but they will for the first time look like one also. This spring the girls plan to have a picnic and later, towards the end of the year, they will award a plaque to their Most Valuable Athlete . The student body should be very proud of these industrious young ladies who have worked together to improve their acitivies. First Row: B. Hawthorne. J. Yoswein, M. Keahon, M. Rowland, R. FORBES — Coaching is the most demanding experience a person can accomplish in his lifetime The coach has the opportunity to mold, develop, and influence the basic attitudes of the individual athlete; attitudes which may affect his future endeavors and lifestyle. Only through coaching can human relationships and understandings be developed to the fullest potential. In the final analysis the coach is the architect directing the moral construction of his athletes and emphasizing the need for each athlete to become all he is capable of being. The Few Who Cared MR. HONIC AND MR WETHEREll — Time: 1975 Place: A college dorm somewhere in Ivy League U S A. Situation: Two guys discussing their High School accomplishments 1. Jerry 2. Dick 1 J played football, basketball, baseball, and also threw the discus for the Track team. 2. You must have gone to a pretty big school. 1. No, not really. Most of us took great pride in the sports program 2. What else did you do? 1 I was in the National Honor Society, wrote for the school newspaper, and was active in student council. 2. You sure got a well rounded education. 1 How about you? What sports did you play? 2. Football, basketball, and even ran Cross Country during the Fall season. 1. That's great — What did you do in the Spring? 2. Well, I was in volleyball, table tennis. Entrance and Stand. 1. You're putting me on. 2. Didn't you ever hear of Rock Rivalry? 1 What's that — a stone fight between two gangs? 2. Hey, no kidding — this is serious!!! 1. What about baseball and track? 2. Well, I made stand committee and that was important 1. What about baseball and track? 2. Well in Entrance if you were lucky enough to be a dancer you had the opportunity to work hard and learn to get your timing down. 1. What about baseball and track? 2. And after Entrance, everyone partied for the whole weekend. 1. What about baseball and track? 2. Most guys were busy with other things. 1. Didn't they have a team? 2. Yeah, I think so. 1. Who played on it? 2. Some guys put in some time while they were in Rock Rivalry 1. Couldn't have been very interested in track and baseball. 2. You know, now that I think of it, there were a few guys who really did care. MR KENNEY — One of the more satisfying experiences a person can achieve during his years of productivity is that of being a part of a young person's learning process and development. The teacher, of course, plays a major part in this learning process The coach, however, plays an important, and sometimes underrated role in the development of an individual Through athletics a coach has the opportunity to continue the personality development of the individual. Values and attitudes are influenced sometimes more by a coach than by a teacher. The satisfaction a coach receives from observing that he has been a positive influence on a young athlete's character and development as well as physical development, is extremely rewarding. MR COSENZA — I cannot put into words the satisfaction you get from coaching a team that was undefeated, knowing that the other teams that are supposed to be equal to you could not defeat you. I hope it happens again next year! MR. POLLOCK — Our school's response to bowling is probably the largest of any athletic endeavor in the land We've had as much as 10% of the entire school body participate in a bowling session. Despite our being the county's smallest school we almost always have a winning season and have never been in last place. All this occurs despite difficult transportation and financial obstacles. To be a part of this spectacular program is a source of great satisfaction and pride for me. MISS KUNZ — I found coaching to be very rewarding and fulfilling — working with the girls; seeing them learn and put into use something that I have taught (whether it is an offensive play in basketball or learning to accept a defeat.) MRS BARRETT — Badminton is sometimes viewed by the uninitiated as a sport requiring little skill or stamina. This view is wholly unsupported by anyone who has tried to play the game well. Playing a winning game requires much technical competence with frequent, long and demanding practices. As with tennis, being in control of one's court and using all appropriate strokes is what wins games. Happily our badminton team did all these well this year. We came in first in our league. Here's to next year. Good Grief!! We always start from scratch each new season. MR MACALUSO — Coaching the 1973 ROCKS football team was indeed a memorable experience It presented me with an opportunity for not only pursuing, but actually achieving, the goal of any team for any sport — and undefeated season. But what's more important, I enjoyed the association and camaraderie with our team members. For this I want to thank the class of 1974, our team captains, and most importantly, Coaches Forbes and Cosenza Without their leadership, our goals would have never been consummated. Their accomplishments will serve as a guiding light for future ROCK teams. MISS HORR — Girls sports at E.R. have come a long way. When I started coaching, I did it to get experience and because I liked to work with high school girls. Now there are two paid coaches for all sports. The girls have had winning seasons in most sports. Field Hockey seems to be the one sport where the girls lack the skills necessary to produce winning teams Women are gradually taking their place in the sports world. The girls at E.R. are learning that it takes hard work and a strong desire to produce champions. MISS FAUCHER — The girls sports program is taking on a new look. Next year, 74-75, all activities will be played either round robin or under divisions with playoffs for 1st or 2nd place in each division. We will be competing in League III, Section 8 for the 1st time. The girls games have improved due to increased skill and knowledge of each sport. In softball the girls enjoyed an undefeated season in 1973 and hope to repeat that performance in 1974. Also for the 1st time next year the girls teams will have uniforms. MR FRIESLABEN — This year marked the 4th time E.R. made the Nassau County playoffs. We were the best defensive team since I've been here. We proved that we could play with the best teams in the county by defeating Freeport, who made the SS finals and by playing 2 outstanding games against Malverne, county champs. Because the boys were completely unselfish this year, Stephen Hefele became the best player E.R has ever seen. The key to our winning season was defense and hard work I've also had the most fun with this group of boys. If we get help next year at center the team will be complete along with 5 returning players including all-division Tom Doherty. I'm looking forward to making the playoffs again next season. During the summer they built a refreshment stand, entered it in the Huckleberry Frolic and part of the money they made went to their class treasury. In November and December they sold first aid kits to the faculty members. Also in that time period they took a trip into the city to see 'Romeo and Juliet. Another fund raising campaign undertaken by the Freshman class was car washing in the back of the High School. It proved to be very successful. ROBERT D. MORSE Principal MR. HENRY E. FREUND Ass't. Principal MR. EDWARD T. CROWLEY Dean of Students Class of 197U Itore b«r 1973 East Rockaway High School East Rockaway, New York Dear Seniors: We are currently in the midst of a fuel shortage. Our leaders tell us that many of our natural resources are in danger of being exhausted. The impact of all this is just beginning to be felt. Some predict that our current economic standard of living will be permanently lowered. What about human resources? What about your resources? Are you using them to capacity? Never has it been so important for all of us to utilize our full potential. If we are to maintain our way of life, it will require high l«vel efficiency from each and every one. Seniors, you can contribute to our future by realizing your full potential. Traditionally, our nation has faced every challenge head on. Let's maintain that tradition. Do your best. Accept the challenges of your time. It begins with you. Good luck! Sincerely, v ffobert D. Morse Principal DR. WILLIAM K. LOUIS Supt. of Schools MICHAEL ALDEN DAVID ARATA One Summer Night. Total success was the result; in the play and inside each one of us. You were there and we felt you. We heard your hands clapping and we saw your eyes gazing. We enjoyed entertaining you and hope to continue to do so. Early in the morning Waiting for us to rise The light of a new day dawnin' Catches the sun in our eyes. This amazing transformation took place on )une 1, 1973, the day of East Rockaway's jun-ior-Senior Prom. Using the song Colour My World as the theme, the class of '74 planned this memorable affair, which was held at the Woodbury Country Club. The entertainment was supplied by the rock group Canadian Ace. The climax of the evening was the crowning of the king, queen, prince, and princess. Mr. Dragone had the honor of crowning Mike Cinque as prince and Laurie Dwyer as princess. Mr. Teresco did the honors for Bobby Clark as king and Sue Hamsley as queen. 181 1492 a Step in The Right Direction BROADWAY BLUES 187 WB REMEMBER Hello, Mr. Chuck? Your shirts are ready. The frustrations of meeting deadlines, the pressure to get enough advertisements to pay for the publication of the book, the joy we felt in knowing it was finally over. These memories we will cherish forever. We would like to take this opportunity to personally thank our editors and their staffs for all the time and effort they so diligently contributed. Many times we have called upon them to work from and well into ail hours of the night (and morning!) We'll never forget all the good times we had during this most fruitful learning experience. We would also like to sincerely thank Mr. Honig, our devoted advisor, for his expert guidance. Without him, needless to say, the 1974 ROCK would not have been published. It seems so long ago that we went to the conference for the new yearbook editors; all those late summer nights trying to decide on a theme. As September rolled around and we had our editors and staffs, we were ready to take on the challenge of completing the 74 ROCK. As our first deadline approached, we saw how invaluable expediency was in the completion of our tasks. Each hurdle showed us a new trick of the trade, as (he yearbook grew and grew. As we ready to leave behind a year of hard work and planning for this book and also six years of learning, fun, and much experience to conquer new horizons, we leave this legacy to all future ROCK pile graduates; that you may learn as much from your failures as you do from your successes. 195 The 1974 Rock Staff Co-editor— Diane jennings Advisor — Mr. Gerald Honig Co-editor — Janice Cole ROCK editorial staff business — joni yoswein, art — felicia kopelow literary — patti gross, advisor — jerry honig editor — diane jennings, photography — todd randazzo Photography Staff Richie Ong, Joe Lagudi, Jerry Cremse Literary Staff Richard Cottcent, Mary Turner, Carla Steinberg, Arlene Rosenthal, Tom DeMott, Jane Levinson 96 Typing Editor — Karen Pacheco Business Staff Colleen Hunter, Kathy Cahill, Joanne Carrigan, Maryann Nelson, Mike Cole, Debra Kipling, Robert Deutsch Senior Activities ALDEN MICHAEL Bowling. Ihey shine; some classes before were not cooperative, but they are creative and interested in projects for school. Mr. Bender . . Dedicated, thoughtful and yet wild and crazy. Mr. Cosenza . . My feelings of the class of 74, besides being RR enemies, is that they are a class of many 'friends'. 74 is blessed with some tremendous leaders who have guided their class and schoolmates in many varied areas. Their achievements both academically and athletically will be remembered for many, many years to come. Being associated with them athletically for 6 years now, I would like to say thank you and good luck to you all in the future. Mr. Dragone . . The class of 74 will be missed by the school almost as much as school was missed by the kids in the class What could be a better symbol of the great luck this class has had than the fact that the band they hire for their prom, Color My World , doesn't know how to play Color My World . I wouldn't say the class of 74 was dumb, but how else can you explain cancelling senior cul day because no one could find a pair of scissors? Mr. Pollock . . . The class of 1974 is more aware of what is happening rather than being indifferent They grope for answers rather than . . . Mr Ryan . . . It does have a few problems. No they are a very enjoyable group of people, but not the most industrious. Mr. Teresco . . . The people that I know seem to be interested in improving the program of the school. Generally it's a good class to work with. Mr Forbes . . They are outstanding individuals and they have a record they should be proud of academically and athletically. Mr Estridge . The class is cooperative, helpful, and mischievous. Mr. Faulkner . . . It is a rarity when you get so many good athletes from one class especially in our school district. For the most part the class has been very cooperative. Mrs. Walsh . . . I find them very cooperative as far as guidance is concerned, but a little tardy. Mr. Richert . . . You people are more human and more sincere than others. You are easier to talk to, but not smarter. Mrs. Howard . . The senior class needs to broaden it's horizons and realize that life is more than E.R now. Mr. Linn . . . They are a nice group of youngsters, very spirited. Certainly one of the nicest groups of seniors I've had for many years at E.R H.S. They try hard academically and show a genuine concern for learning. Mr. Kilcommins ... I think of the class as being close knit, class conscious. We had our enjoyable moments. Mr. Vandewater . . . We began at E.R.H.S. together in 1968, but you are finishing first. I leave you with this thought; examinations are formidable even to the best prepared, for the greatest fool may ask more than the wisest man can answer. Mr. Homg . . I never knew there was a class of 74 . The class isn't all that solid, they just put starch in their underwear They're really a funny group; if Bob Hope used some of their lines he'd be going to school here too. They learned in science that light travels from the sun to the earth at the rate of 186,000 miles per second but they believe the reason is because it's down hill all the way Some of them were almost seriously injured in an automat; they were eating a piece of pie when the door came down and hit them in the neck. 203 A Look at the REPRINTED FROM THE 1954 ROCK: TO THE FUTURE we look with troubled mind. War, threat of war, trouble in Indo China and Europe, and possible unemployment are just a few of the problems we face. The atom bomb and the hydrogen bomb may make all our training useless; for to use all our training we must first be allowed to live a full and useful life. We hope that when our children graduate as the class of 1974 that they will find the world a better place to live in than we have found it. 204 World Around Us NIXON INAUGURATED TO A SECOND TERM LYNDON JOHNSON DIES AT 64 VIETNAM CEASE-FIRE SIGNED U S DEVALUES DOLLAR BY 10% FIRST U.S. WAR PRISONERS RETURN ISRAELIS DOWN LIBYAN JETLINER U.S ENVOY SLAIN IN SUDAN BIG POWERS BACK VIETNAM TRUCE DOWNEY RELEASED BY CHINESE U S CONSUMERS BOYCOTT MEAT PICASSO IS DEAD AT 91 TOP WHITE HOUSE AIDES QUIT SIEGE OF WOUNDED KNEE MON FREAL CAPTURES HOCKEY TITLE U.S. LAUNCHES SKYLAB MISSION SOVIET SST CRASHES IN PARIS SECRETARIAT WINS TRIPLE CROWN BREZHNEV BEGINS U.S. VISIT QUEEN El IZABE TH VISITS CANADA NIXON HOLDS WATERGATE TAPES SKYLAB 2 ASTRONAUTS IN SPACE AGNEW UNDER CRIMINAL PROBE 700 KILLED IN MEXICO QUAKE IUDGE DEMANDS WATERGATE TAPES ALLENDE DIES IN CHILE COUP U N.
