PUBLISHED BY THE STUDENTS OF EAST ROCKAWAY HIGH SCHOOL EAST ROCKAWAY, NEW YORK FOREWORD “For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven; a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted; a time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up.,} Ecclesiastes 3 The time has come for the Class of 1966 to leave these hallowed halls so long familiar to us and venture into a world of unfamiliarity and uncertainty. For us. as seniors, it is an adventure as well as a challenge, but through the efforts of our teachers, as well as our parents and friends, we shall not enter this awaiting new world unprepared. The time is ripe for experimentation as well as exploration. We will try to succeed where others have failed and we will try to venture where others have feared to go. However, no matter what our destination, we will bring along our fond memories of East Rockaway High School as presented in this yearbook, the 1966 ROCK. HOME DEDICATION It is extremely difficult to express in words the debt of gratitude owed by the Class of 1966 to its advisor, Mrs. JafTe. However, we hope that through this dedication we may show our appreciation for the earnest and diligent guidance which she has given us. We approached you for assistance only two years ago, yet in these two years the example you set has enabled us to overcome the seemingly insurmountable obstacles of Rock Rivalry, the Prom, class functions, and the myriad crises of our senior year. Your constant encouragement and genuine interest in our activities have won you our deepest admiration, and the incentive which you have instilled in each of us will serve to guide us as we endeavor to achieve greater goals in life. Thus, it is with great pride and affection that we, the Class of 1966, dedicate the 1966 Rock to you, Mrs. JafTe, in appreciation of your unselfish devotion and enduring friendship. What may have been the birth of a new club in the Rock Pile this year was actually the renewal of an old one. The members and the advisor of the Chess Club share a common interest in the science of chess. Active participation by its members will help bring the Chess Club into permanent existence in East Rockaway. Dedicated to the promotion of culture in its members and in the school, the Art Club emphasizes the creative side of our students. To achieve the promotion of culture in East Rockaway, the Art Club has brought to our school excellent and well-appreciated art films. Its annual Art Show is not only a high point of the year for the Art Club, but for the school as well. The success of this annual event and other Art Club activities is due to the capable guidance of Mrs. Shimans, the Art Club advisor. Despite this handicap it was an exciting season with several close games and victories over Carey, Valley Stream South, and Southsidc. The team worked hard and showed remarkable spirit in the face of adversity. With many varsity players returning next year, we can look forward to a season which will more clearly indicate the team’s real talent and ability. The Junior Varsity team fared slightly better than their Varsity counterparts. Their performance was highlighted by outstanding individuals as well as excellent teamwork. The players improved steadily during the year. Since the Junior Varsity team is also a training ground for future Varsity players, we have further reason to look forward to more successful Varsity teams. 103 JOE ROMERO AT THE ROCK PILE VARSITY TRACK FRONT: Steve Barth, Pete D’Agnessa, Chip Koehler, Gary Thom-low, Dennis Key. The track team, which provides a place for everyone, is under way. With depth and experience in both the running and field events, the Rocks should send a large delegation to the sectional meet and should continue breaking records as they have done in the past. As in other years, the Chorus put on a musical presentation for the school and community. This year they topped their past performances with an excellent presentation of “The Mikado”. A memorable time was had by all those who attended. Our congratulations go to the entire Chorus for such a successful performance. Ruth Sergei’s adaptation of A. A. Milne's book results in a humorous three-act murder play that keeps everyone wondering exactly who the murderer is. With the able direction from Mr. Kirsch and the untiring co-operation from the cast members, the play went off smoothly. The audience was held in a pleasant aura of mystery throughout the entire performance. When Mark Ablett was killed, everyone believed that the murder had been committed by his brother, Robert, who had just arrived at Red House, for a visit. But where had he disappeared to after the killing? Nobody would even attempt an answer, nobody except Antony Gillingham, an amateur detective. In the end, he disclosed the identity of the real, unsuspected murderer. Nobody else was able to guess who it was, making the play an interesting one, enjoyed by all. 131 The cast included: Mark Ablett ........ Robert Ablett ...... Angela Norbury . .. JOHN CAMPBELL CLOCK OF AGES The Freshman class of ’69 showed remarkable abilities and talents in this year’s Rock Rivalry. The Frosh sports’ teams had tremendous drive and great ability which served as offensive strength to all opposing teams. The Freshmen exhibited artistic talent in their art, mural, and stand. The highlight of the Freshmen’s Rock Rivalry, however, was their ingenious and delightful entrance. Going back in time, they amused everyone with episodes ranging from 1926 to the present. The Freshmen should and will be a strong competitor for the Rock Rivalry cup when next year rolls around. Future success for the Freshmen class is a certainty. SOPHOMORES PRESENT FOOTLIGHTS AND TEARDROPS The class of ’66 feels extra proud of the fine performance in Rock Rivalry by its sister class, the Sophomores. The Sophs’ excellent presentation and recreation of old Vaudeville will long be remembered by all who viewed it. Keeping in mind the qualities of originality and creativity the Sophomores successfully presented their chosen theme in art, mural, stand, and, most of all, entrance. Talent is a by-word of the Sophomore class as shown in their choreography. script, and staging. It will be a long time before East Rockaway will see a sophomore class equal to the Class of 1968. JUNIORS RAISE ROMAN RIOT Since their freshmen year, the class of ’67 has shown drive, talent, and great potential which has made it a class worth watching in the years following its official entrance into Rock Rivalry. This year the Juniors combined their three winning qualities to become the 30th winner of this annual event. Beginning well with a lead in sports, the Juniors made their dream of the cup a reality. The Junior theme of Roman Riot was apparent in the art, mural, and unforgettable Roman temple of their class. Their first place entrance was only the climax of a successful Rock Rivalry for the Junior class. As shown in this and previous Rock Rivalries, the class of ’67 is bound to find success in whatever it endeavors. EAST SIDE, WEST SIDE I heard the words I never thought I’d hear, A sickening feeling overcame me. The Juniors had won: they let out a cheer The night the Seniors lost Rock Rivalry. I sensed a moan, one of utter despair That seemed to say, “It's not true. It can’t be.” I left. I wanted to get out of there. The night the Seniors lost Rock Rivalry. We had worked so hard, and we hadn’t won. Our girls were crying hysterically. The boys were silent, you know, sort of numb The night the Seniors lost Rock Rivalry. WE5T51DE EXPRESS ri It’s like a dream, distant yet not quite gone. I still can’t believe it. Yet tragically Enough it happened to us. Then the girls wept on The night the Seniors lost Rock Rivalry. Our disappointment will never leave. The hurt will remain, unfortunately. We’ll never forget, we’ll always grieve. For the night the Seniors lost Rock Rivalry. —John Woodyard, ’49 Rock THESE ARE THE TIMES 140 THAT TRY MEN SOULS ROMAN 142 HOLIDAY A night of enchantment in Ancient Rome was presented by the Class of 1966 in honor of the Seniors on June 4, 1965. That night will long be remembered by all who attended. For many weeks before the big night the Class of ’66 worked under the leadership of Dennis Key, Patti Connell, Tootie Cohn, Zelda Baskin, Emi Ruffalo, Claire Lang, Laurie Keane and Don Scaglione. Their effort was rewarded by seeing the gym transformed into a Roman coliseum and everyone’s obvious enjoyment. C V-' M3 ROCK Gerry Butt, Vinnie Pcppito, Susan Watson, Barbara Olian, Penny Rubin. PRODUCTION PHOTOGRAPHY AND ART STAFFS BUSINESS STAFF Joanne Loliscio, Peggy Orlacchio, Susan Watson, Zelda Baskin, Judy Besedin, Janine Peterson, Barbara Stein, Janice Bolte, Henny Morroni, Maureen McLean. STAFFS TYPING STAFF The production of the yearbook is the result of much hard work on the part of many individuals. Each editor was responsible for the work of his staff and they all accomplished their goals through co-operating with each other and working individually. The literary staff under Ray Smith turned in interesting and imaginative copy. Zelda Baskin, class treasurer and Business Manager, supervised her staff in the magazine sale, booster drive, and in selling at games to raise the needed amount of money. Denise Arata and her staff created imaginative artwork on the theme of “Time” and the typing staff under Kathy Dunn made many close deadlines. Sue Watson supervised photography and Gerry Butt as Production Manager handled all the odd jobs that arose. Without the devotion and effort of all these people, the 1966 ROCK would never have been produced. Peggy Bcrgner, Donna Taddoni, Georgia Matti, Joanne Loliscio, Pat Hayhurst. LITERARY STAFF Janine Peterson. Mary Kearney. Annette Karam. Nancy Dillon. Bonnie Case, Larry Pashaian, Ray Smith. Peggy Orlacchio. FROM THE EDITORS’ DESK The yearbook is printed. As editor and assistant editors of the 1966 ROCK we have completed our job. However, it must be noted that completion of this yearbook could not have been done without the help and advice of many others. We would like, at this time, to personally thank all those whose help has made this yearbook possible. Although we, as editors, have the main job of putting the yearbook together, the production of the ’66 ROCK lay mainly with the various yearbook staffs. The willing cooperation of each and every staff member made this publication of the edition of the ROCK possible. Ray Smith and his fine literary staff worked hard to supply many of the fine write-ups throughout the ROCK. The job of typing the final copy lay with the typists, led by Kathy Dunn, whose help was essential as well as inestimable. Although the 1966 ROCK does not employ much art to present our theme of time, the art staff, particularly Denise Arata and Vinnic Peppitohas spent time and effort to prepare the division pages seen throughout this yearbook. The hardworking efforts of the production staff, led by Gerry Butt, has eased much of the workload on the editors. Led by Susan Watson, the photography staff has worked particularly hard to gather photographs for the ROCK. Special recognition should be given to Zelda Baskin and her assistants who comprise the business Staff which efficiently Janice Bolte—Assistant Editor, Anna Schweizer—Editor, Mr. Honig—Advisor, managed the business end of the yearbook. Melanie Kubat—Assistant Editor. These girls spent long hours at football and basketball games selling the candy and soda that netted the profits used to finance the Rock. The entire production of this yearbook, however, would have been impossible without the help and cooperation of the members of the Class of ’66. In the midst of a financial crisis, when the prospect of the yearbook was somewhat remote, the Senior Class worked diligently to raise the money necessary for such a publication. Not only was money successfully raised, but a feeling of unity and accomplishment was instilled in the class as well. The road to the completion of the yearbook is not an easy one. It is one of work, confusion, and doubt. The hard times outweigh the easy ones. There are times when it seems impossible to complete as well as meet deadlines. However, the efforts of many made the final publication of this yearbook materialize. Most of all, the effort and guidance of Mr. Jerry Honig has helped more than anything else to make this 1966 ROCK the success we the editors feel it is. CULL SENIOR DIARY September 8: School starts.
