IN MEMORIAM JOHN F. KENNEDY November 22nd, 1963, was a day that not many of us will ever forget. As a generation which has never withstood any serious trouble or tragedy, we each felt a personal grief in the loss of our president. As a symbol of youth and of everything we had to look forward to in life, he showed the human qualities of courage, intelligence, integrity, leadership and simple kindness. We mourn his tragic death, but somehow we must go on and try to make this country, the nation, that he wanted. 5

MESSAGE FROM THE CLASS OF 1964 Life is a voyage. The winds of life come strong. From every Point, yet each will speed thy course along If thou with steady hand when tempts blow Const keep thy course aright and never once let go —Theodore Williams We, as seniors, are about to emerge from the harbors of life and enter the open seas. Our helter-skelter days have turned to days of meaning. We owe our thanks for the memorable experiences which have shaped our destinies to East Rockaway High School. We have been taught facts, ideas and skills that will be of value to us for the rest of our lives. These last four years have been more than academic learning, however. We have grown mentally, physically, emotionally and intellectually since our entrance into the school. Through the example and aid of our teachers and administrators, we have learned to face new situations, problems and crisis with calm and assurance, intelligence and thoughtfulness. Through our contact with other students, we have gained a greater understanding of life, of human nature, of ourselves. We have learned to work together and yet be individuals, to share in the enjoyment of high school life and yet share in the responsibilities of leadership. Soon we will bid farewell—to the community, the school and each other, as we pursue our chosen goals. Many of us will go to college, or some other form of higher education; a few of us will enter the armed forces and serve our country; some of us will go right to work; others will settle down and raise a family. We will live in many parts of the country and do many kinds of work. We will broaden our horizons and discover new ideas. But, whatever we do and wherever we go, we will always remember the friends we made and the foundation for a purposeful life that was laid in high school. We are sad to see that something has ended, but our hearts lighten when we realize that something more has just begun. 4

SPECIAL A yearbook can only have one dedication; and yet we feel fhe need to express the thanks and appreciation that our entire faculty deserves for their aid and cooperation. MR. JOSEPH DEL GIORNO Gracias! To Mr. Del Giorno go our thanks for the international tone our school has gained. Instrumental in the exchange programs, which brought 35 American Field Service Students to East Rockaway for three days in 1961, a Costa Rican senorita for a year in 1961-1962, a Herald Tribune guest from Italy in 1962 and sent three members of the class of '64 to South America for the summer, Mr. Del Giorno has fostered a better understanding of the people of the rest of the world. Serious, and yet amiable, Mr. Del Giorno has offered sound advice and guidance to both foreign and native students. MR. HENRY FORDHAM The Sound of Music has been brought to the lives of East Rock-away's citizens largely through the efforts of our choral director, Mr. Fordham. A dedicated worker, Mr. Fordham has taught music at East Rockaway High School for over twenty-five years, and throughout that time he has achieved an admirable record of musical triumphs. As our music teacher several years ago he instilled in us an appreciation of the joys of listening to music. Many of us have had the unforgettable experience of participating in the Chorus and Operettas under the fine leadership of this fine musician. To those who have not directly been influenced there is the memory of the fine performances we heard and the reputation that he has established for our music department and the school. 6
