Text from Pages 1 - 172 of the 1964 volume:

T‘fc, DEDICATION Dear Mr. Roscoe, The past six years that we have known you have been exciting and memorable ones for us. You entered the school when we, as hesitant seventh graders, did, and you have been a part of our class ever since that first day. As a teacher, you opened our minds to the fascinating world of science through your classes in general science, biology and chemistry. Through your patience and gentle sense of humor, we have learned not to be squeamish when dissecting frogs and to use scientific methods in solving problems. As an advisor, you have given us your able counseling and have helped to make our class the class it is. Your confidence gave us strength when things looked bleak. Your loyalty when we were faced with defeat was a great comfort. Through the frenzy of Rock Rivalry, the prom, noisy class meetings, and class dances, you helped us to organize ourselves and to work to the best of our abilities. Most important to us, however, is that you have been our friend. No matter who we were, you showed a genuine interest in each one of us as an individual. When we were faced with problems we could always go to you. Now that our days at E.R.H.S. are drawing to a close, it is fitting that we should take this opportunity to express our heartfelt appreciation. It is with great pleasure that we dedicate the 1964 ROCK to you as a token of our gratitude and everlasting friendship. The Senior Class MESSAGE FROM THE CLASS OF 1964 Life is a voyage. The winds of life come strong. From every Point, yet each will speed thy course along If thou with steady hand when tempts blow Const keep thy course aright and never once let go —Theodore Williams We, as seniors, are about to emerge from the harbors of life and enter the open seas. Our helter-skelter days have turned to days of meaning. We owe our thanks for the memorable experiences which have shaped our destinies to East Rockaway High School. We have been taught facts, ideas and skills that will be of value to us for the rest of our lives. These last four years have been more than academic learning, however. We have grown mentally, physically, emotionally and intellectually since our entrance into the school. Through the example and aid of our teachers and administrators, we have learned to face new situations, problems and crisis with calm and assurance, intelligence and thoughtfulness. Through our contact with other students, we have gained a greater understanding of life, of human nature, of ourselves. We have learned to work together and yet be individuals, to share in the enjoyment of high school life and yet share in the responsibilities of leadership. Soon we will bid farewell—to the community, the school and each other, as we pursue our chosen goals. Many of us will go to college, or some other form of higher education; a few of us will enter the armed forces and serve our country; some of us will go right to work; others will settle down and raise a family. We will live in many parts of the country and do many kinds of work. We will broaden our horizons and discover new ideas. But, whatever we do and wherever we go, we will always remember the friends we made and the foundation for a purposeful life that was laid in high school. We are sad to see that something has ended, but our hearts lighten when we realize that something more has just begun. 4 IN MEMORIAM JOHN F. KENNEDY November 22nd, 1963, was a day that not many of us will ever forget. As a generation which has never withstood any serious trouble or tragedy, we each felt a personal grief in the loss of our president. As a symbol of youth and of everything we had to look forward to in life, he showed the human qualities of courage, intelligence, integrity, leadership and simple kindness. We mourn his tragic death, but somehow we must go on and try to make this country, the nation, that he wanted. 5 SPECIAL A yearbook can only have one dedication; and yet we feel fhe need to express the thanks and appreciation that our entire faculty deserves for their aid and cooperation. MR. JOSEPH DEL GIORNO Gracias! To Mr. Del Giorno go our thanks for the international tone our school has gained. Instrumental in the exchange programs, which brought 35 American Field Service Students to East Rockaway for three days in 1961, a Costa Rican senorita for a year in 1961-1962, a Herald Tribune guest from Italy in 1962 and sent three members of the class of '64 to South America for the summer, Mr. Del Giorno has fostered a better understanding of the people of the rest of the world. Serious, and yet amiable, Mr. Del Giorno has offered sound advice and guidance to both foreign and native students. MR. HENRY FORDHAM The Sound of Music has been brought to the lives of East Rock-away's citizens largely through the efforts of our choral director, Mr. Fordham. A dedicated worker, Mr. Fordham has taught music at East Rockaway High School for over twenty-five years, and throughout that time he has achieved an admirable record of musical triumphs. As our music teacher several years ago he instilled in us an appreciation of the joys of listening to music. Many of us have had the unforgettable experience of participating in the Chorus and Operettas under the fine leadership of this fine musician. To those who have not directly been influenced there is the memory of the fine performances we heard and the reputation that he has established for our music department and the school. 6 THANKS Due to the limitation of space, we have chosen four teachers that we feel have had a great influence upon us and have been of valuable service in our years in the high school. MR. FRANCIS HENRICH Our deepest appreciation is extended towards our Ace ' who has inspired and helped us in many phases of school life. First and foremost an excellent teacher, Mr. Henrich has earned the respect of all who have been under his guidance. Budding chemists and physicists, and even future housewives and mechanics, explored the mysteries and wonders of science with him. We have been helped to understand the best way to solve problems, both of science and of life, through the help of this man. His firm hand and witty humor will always remain with us when we leave school and go into the outside world. His help in Rock Rivalry, school and living rate a great thanks. MR. GERALD HONIG It is very rare that a teacher is able to make so profound an effect in so short a time as Mr. Honig has been able to achieve. As advisor to the ROCK, National Honor Society and Pi Delta Kappa he has made a great impression upon us. His guiding hand was greatly appreciated as we traversed the road through math complexities. His readiness to help in order to avert a crisis in the production of the yearbook was a quality of great value. Always willing to help with any aspect of school life, Uncle Jerry became involved fully in our school after so short a stay. For your understanding, enthusiasm and help we thank you. 7 WILLIAM K. LOUIS Dr. Louis, the new Superintendent of the East Rockaway School System, has made the transition from one administration to another a smooth one. We seem to feel at home with him and hope that he feels at home with us. With his fine administrative ability and genial personality we are confident that he will lead the school system to far-reaching progress. 8 EAST ROCKAWAY PUBLIC SCHOOLS EAST ROCKAWAY, N. Y. NEVIN L. DOUGLAS SACKMAN Director - Pupil Personnel High School Class of June, 1964 East Rockaway High School East Rockaway, New York Dear Seniors: You have now reached the point of finishing an important phase of your life and of beginning another. As you look back, a long time ago—some thirteen years—you entered kindergarten. Yet, your education began before then. Your father and mother were your first teachers. They taught you to speak, to read, and to understand. They also taught you to distinguish right from wrong. They had, and still have, your best interests at heart. Since kindergarten your teachers have worked with you to help you prepare yourself for life. They opened doors for you in the arts, sciences, humanities, and communication skills. They were also very much interested in having you develop strong and desirable character traits. As you look back, I hope that you can say that you always gave your best to the task at hand. If you did, you are well prepared for life, and I congratulate you. If you did not give your best, you still have life's lesson to learn. However, it is not too late. You are now on the threshold of many opportunities through which you can improve yourself, and I challenge you to do so. So as you leave East Rockaway High School to pursue your goals in life, always take pride in your work and you will be proud of your accomplishments. Be inquisitive and curious. After a brief struggle last year, the Student Council has increased its power and importance as an organ of student government. We have confidence that Miss McKeon, the organization's new advisor, will continue to provide the expert guidance and help that she provided this year. Under her leadership, and with the cooperation of the student body, we are certain that the Student Council will increase its usefulness as an important part of student government. 76 Miss McKeon Advisor CLASS OFFICERS CLASS OF 1967 President—Bruce Mello Vice-President—Marion Rogner Treasurer—John Dever Secretary—Helen Soulander J. CLASS OF 1969 78 Enthusiasm and exuberance are the bywords of our school's youngest set. Proud and eager they began their lives at East Rockaway High School with some hesitation and much anticipation. Through the helpful guidance and example of the upperclassmen and advisors, the seventh graders have bound themselves into a coherent unit. They have organized their class and ad- justed well to their new environment. Livliness, school spirit and potential are the outstanding characteristics of this class's personality. It will not be long however, until the burdens of responsiblity add service, achievement and respect to the list. We leave with confidence that we leave our school in competent hands. 79 CLASS OF 1968 80 Your final year in junior high completes the transition from childhood to adolescence. We, as Seniors, can point with pride to our first year in high school as one filled with the experiences enjoyed by maturing youngsters. Take full advantage of the years ahead of you,- they will provide you with memories that will last forever. 81 CLASS OF 1967 82 We know your first year in high school has been a different and exciting one. A rapid change has occurred. You who were just a group of kids are now a solid class. We hope that you will have the good fortune to experience the benefits that E.R.H.S. can offer those who desire them. As you proceed onward you will come to realize the value of everything around you as we have done. We envy you because you are about to experience what we have just finished. Good Luck! 83 CLASS OF 1966 84 The Sophomores hove been our special friends in the short time we have known them. Between our two classes, there have been strong bonds of cooperation and assistance. They have given us moral support, cheerfully, and unfailingly, on numerous occasions. Some say that the Sophomore year is the best year in high school. It was our most memorable year, and we are sure that the Sophomore Class will look back on it in future years as a bright year in their lives. As Seniors, sophisticated and worried about the future, we envy their carefree spirit and lively ambition. The Sophomore Class is one to be watched; they are continually amazing us. We hope that in the two remaining years at E.R.H.S. the Sophs will work to their full potential and strive for greater things so that they may get as much enjoyment and preparation for later life as we did. 85 CLASS OF 1965 86 The Junior year is perhaps the most exciting year in high school. There is still the carefreeness of the Sophomore year and yet, the seriousness and responsibility of the Senior year. The Junior year is one of class rings, the Prom, College Boards and serious plans for the future. The Junior Class has shown itself as a talented, well-organized group. Although we have often been keen rivals, we will continue to remember the way in which you proved your worth in so many ways. To the Juniors, we leave the leadership of the student body. We can only hope that as you Juniors don the role of Seniors, you will remember that you must carry on untarnished the ideals of the school. We are confident that we have left the school in sure hands. 87 Russell Lynn NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY One of the highest honors thot a high school student can receive is to be elected a member of the National Honor Society. Selection is based on excellence in the areas of Scholarship, Leadership, Character and Service. Generally those chosen exhibit excellence in many other areas and become assets to the community as they reach maturity. Mr. Honig is the advisor for our East Rockaway chapter. Co-captained by Jack Copeland and Jay Conlon, and disciplined by Coaches Freund and Forbes, we fought hard through every game, be it victory or defeat. There were many bright spots in the season which deserve mention. Our stunning victory, 32—7, over Floral Park, our traditional victory, 9—7, over Lynbrook, Tim Blanchette's 101 yard run back of an interception and Jack Copeland's game winning field goal provided many thrilling moments for the fans. JUNIOR PROM The good ship Bon Voyage set sail on June 7, 1963, and all hands on board will remember this voyage as a night to remember. Our Junior Prom, in honor of the class of 1963, took a nautical theme and utilized the creativity and talents of many of the class of '64 crew. With gay festoons of red, white and blue streamers, we transformed the gym into a ship's ballroom. Authentic-looking portholes, life rings, fish nets, crows' nests in the basketball hoops and a giant ship of flowers heightened the effect of our seaworthy Prom. Freshmen decked out in sailor suits served the ship's passengers Chocolate Ships, life rings, a melon boat. Iceberg punch and soda from champagne-jacketed bottles. 138 BON VOYAGE Although our Prom Ship has docked, all who attended or aided in making it the success it was will never forget the excitement and thrill of the Prom's gay atmosphere and breath-taking decor. The fond memories we hold of our Junior Prom will always remind us of the cooperation and hard work on the part of the whole class, and the generous assistance of faculty advisors, village neighbors and store owners that made it the success it was. fjL cl;.,. 4 1964 kink a w uj uj h .Hoot’ vutJi iili| mOiL % l|OU lu llw Jtfu iiiot H om CtLunl tiw 5 i V ■ ,„ T’ if hi ilk. 9HS • H'liK'k 139 GIRL For two nights this year. East Rockaway High School's auditorium became the scene of a rousing western, as the high school chorus presented George Gershwin's Girl Crazy. Under the superb direction of Mr. Henry Fordham the show was a rousing success. Aided by Sue Faulkner, Stage Manager, and Rae Smillie, Director's Assistant, Mr. Fordham rehearsed his troupe for many long hours. The fine dancing was largely a result of the wonderful instruction by Miss June LeRoy, our dancing instructor. CRAZY Never to be forgotten ore the sexy songs by Kate, Maxine Simson, the antics and accent of Zoli, Jim Garbarino, the screetchingly loud clothes of Snake Eyes, Bruce Bradt, suave manner of the scoundrel Doc, Bill Haskins, the touching singing of Molly, Micki O'Keefe, the handsome Johnny, Tom Gleason, the cool Sam, Dennis Policastro, and the wonderful singing of the entire cast. Everyone connected with this fine production deserves a vote of congratulations for a job well done. SENIOR This year the senior class chose If a Man Answers as its senior play. They continued to show this individuality in every phase of the competition. The Frosh, with their Grocery Grandeur, placed third in the overall Rock Rivalry contest, a feat not often achieved by a Freshman class. The Class of '67 started out Rock Rivalry by taking a second place in sports. Their refreshment stand was a cash register, and was one of the most outstanding stands built in years. The cheerleaders were dressed as Plaid Stamp Girls and they won a first place for the original costumes. The Freshman entrance was a showcase of this class's originality. The grocery store, condemned by the Public Health Department, had to clean up or be replaced with a supermarket. The job seemed impossible until the occupants of the store, brooms, mops, vegetables, pails, etc., came to the rescue. With their clever songs and unique dances the store dwellers cleaned up the place and saved the day. The Class of '67 is sure to do well in the future because of the talent they are blessed with. They undertook to produce their contribution to Rock Rivalry with vigor and ambition. The Class of '66 built a spectacular windmill as their refreshment stand. It was so realistic that the blades looked as if they would begin to turn at any moment. The Sophomore entrance was a gay and colorful picture of life on a tulip farm. Amid light-hearted songs and spirited folk dances, the blond wigged Dutch folk chased out the villains who were trying to swindle them out of the land. With the theme of Gay 90's ' the Class of '65 showed vigorous initiative in every activity of Rock Rivalry. Their Trolly Car refreshment stand rede the rails to a first place for its outstanding quality. Their entrance was a lively and interesting display of their talents. As they portrayed the people of the Exposition of the 1890's they involved the audience in their story with their clever ideas, cute songs, interesting dances and professional-type music. The Class of '65, although not successful in their bid for the cup this year, had the ability and the spirit to reach the top next year. In this pursuit we wish them the best of luck. Skillful artwork, authentic-looking sailor, WAVE and NAVY Nurse Uniforms, impressive Uncle Sam cheerleaders, victorious sports teams and precision songs and dances collectively displayed a noteworthy coordination of theme and talent that earned the cup for the Classof '64. Just as we, as Seniors, are about to pick up our anchors and sail into the open seas of life on our own, our Rock Rivalry sail- ors were about to start life anew in a world which had just finished World War II.
