We, the class of ’59, are sure that with the talents and ability which you have shown, your high school career will be a worthwhile and rewarding one. Good Luck! It has made other classes sit up and take notice of its spirit and do-or-die enthusiasm, as well. The Sophs have proven their leadership with their prowess on the athletic field and proficiency in the classroom. 58 Having tremendous ability in all phases of school life, the Juniors will always be remembered for their fabulous Rock Rivalry successes. Well stocked with talent and spirit, the Juniors also have the organizational ability to make things go. They will be long remembered by all members of the class of ’59. To you, Juniors, though long our rivals, we are proud to leave our Senior heritage. To a class full of school spirit we wish much good luck and a continuance of the traditions that have become yours. We know that the Frosh choice of a class adviser will prove to a wise one. Continuing in his third year as sage of the Junior class, Mr. Kirsch is again lending his wizardry to the Class of ’60 which has had so much success in the past. Mr. Plunkett, chosen again as adviser by the class of ’61, will continue to extend his guiding hand to the Sophs. With his help the Sophomores hope to repeat their Freshman successes. 62 National Honor Society Membership in the National Honor Society is the highest honor that can be bestowed upon a student at East Rockaway High School. Members represent the highest qualities of Leadership, Scholarship, Character, and Service. Suspense is high at the solemn induction ceremonies held twice a year. The assembly waits expectantly for the names to be read and for the black-robed members to lead the inductees to the platform. Miss Decker is the faculty adviser. It has as its aims the promotion of school spirit and the coordination of extra-curricular activities. The major activity sponsored by the Student Council is Rock Rivalry, which for many students is the high point of the year. 63 i-Sw Science Honor Society SCIENCE HONOR SOCIETY—Front Row, left to right: S. The Science Honor Society was formed to stimulate an interest in science among its members as well as to honor outstanding achievement in science courses. At each meeting a fascinating facet of science is dealt with in a program given by a member of the society. The subject may range anywhere from the chemistry of plastics to the unknown realm of hypnotism and extrasensory perception. Mr. Hen rich, adviser, has seen to it that qualifications for entrance are rigid, and that these high standards are adhered to by its members. PI DELTA KAPPA—Front Row, left to right: R. Pi Delta Kappa The newest of school honorary clubs is Pi Delta Kappa which was formed this year from the Math Honor Society. It differs from the math club, however, in that it presents more advanced material to those students who will take college math courses. As head of the group, Miss Decker feels that through the organizational meetings and programs, members will become more familiar with mathematical reasoning. 64 Math Honor Society Formed to honor those students who are outstanding in mathematics, the Mathematics Honor Society provides a greater challenge to its members than is formed in the regular math courses. Spiced by interesting presentations of higher supplementary mathematics by its members, usually followed by refreshments and discussion, the meetings are quite lively. These meetings are held on the first Thursday night of every month under the guiding hand of Miss Decker. MATH HONOR SOCIETY—Front Row, left to right: N. Gering, M. Schneider, President; L. Andiron Club The Andiron Club, formed to help students in their preparations for scholarship examinations, conducts informal discussions on many or any topics of interest to its members. Independent thinking and free expression of ideas are stressed in all topics covered. The club, consisting of Juniors and Seniors with a Regents average of 88%, has achieved its purpose. Scholarships and honors have been awarded to at least five of its Senior members. Some of this may be credited to the informal seminar classes conducted by Mr. Plunkett during July and August. 65 Debating Club A group which could well have “never a dull moment” for a slogan is the Debating Club. This group, open to any member of the Sophomore, Junior, or Senior class, ponders all important questions of life in general and usually turns up with startling answers. The frequent heated debates arc arbitrated by Mr. Berg, the club adviser. DEBATING CLUB—Left to right: Helen Shanley, Joan Lodge, Judith Dclpczzo, Ruth Goldberg. Chess Club The Chess Club, inspired the unquenchable enthusiasm of Peter Oldak has been firmly entrenched in our school. Our chess team, although dropped from first place by the graduation of three valuable players, still performs admirably in all contests. 66 Key Club New to our school this year, the Kiwanis-sponsored key club is a service club for boys in the tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grades. Although similar to many other school organizations, it is unique in its sponsorship, aims, and program. The club, with the cooperation of the school and Kiwanis Club, performs many deeds of noteworthy service. KEY CLUB—Front Row, left to right: J. Tice, K. Widman, J. McCann, R. Kover, M. Yomtov, R. Awards for service are a minor letter, 5 points; a major letter, 10 points; and the Kiwanis key, attained by those earning 20 points. Mr. Berg, under whose guiding hand the service squad has been organized and directed, has control over hall cops, usherettes, ticket sellers, receptionists, and cafeteria workers. The added color brought to our classes by the slides and motion pictures may be attributed to Mr. Wheeler, who trains his branch of the squad as masters of the visual aids. 72 SERVICE SQUAD Front Row, left to right: L. With a repertoire of songs ranging from Singers ancient madrigals to the most modern of popular music, they offer a series of interesting and enjoyable musical programs throughout the year. Jr. Chorus Made up of prospective Senior Chorus members, the Junior Chorus is introduced to various types of music under the careful direction of Mr. Fordham. A good band brings the community closer to the school. To serve this purpose the band plays at football games, music festivals, and in the annual Memorial Day Parade. As director, Mr. Pellicane feels that sound individual work builds a good band. The number of excellent soloists appearing at our concerts provides proof of his theory. FOOT This year’s football team completed a fairly successful season, as for the first time in several years it played teams of its own class. The 4-4 record can be attributed mainly to the hard hitting line and fleet backfield. Due to the construction work, no home games were played, but spectators who traveled to the Saturday games were treated to good exhibitions of football play. 82 83 Freshman FRESHMAN BASKETBALL TEAM—Front Row, left to right: A. BASKETBALL This year’s basketball team finished strongly with consecutive wins over Malverne, Carey, and West Hempstead. Throughout the season the team’s marked senior membership performed with skill in games which all had to be played on away courts due to construction. Praise should go to John Zimmerman, high scorer and rebounder, and to Steve Boll, our fast outside man with the deadly shots. 86 BASEBALL TEAM—Front Row: S. Boll, Captain. Second Row: G. Basebal 88 The baseball team this year was one of the best in several years, although we lacked a good playing field. Few men were missing from last year’s squad, and quite a few' returned as letter-men. Special duties fell on Vic Canatta, veteran pitcher, and Steve Boll, a hard hitting third baseman, who were among the many in the senior ranks. TRACK SQUAD—Front Row, left to right: R. Track uuvin icaui, j- vciy ycai 15 a guoa year ior an activity in which everyone is given an opportunity to compete. Although we lost a few valuable men through their graduation, a strong team was ours this year through the return of many fine performers in all events. The competitive spirit of the trackmen and the vigorous encouragement and stress on sportsmanship by Mr. Berg more than make up for the lack of good practice facilities. Bowling BOWLING TEAM—Front Row, left to right: S. Schlau, J. Librizzi, D. Rodgers, T. Fairchild, A. Leonard. Second Row: R. Schlosscr, D. San- ders, R. Rua, R. Nugent, R. Brown. Mr. H. X Pollock. Coach. This year, the East Rockaway bowling team had a spectacular season that was the talk of athletic and scholastic circles. Over 162 boys, more than 40% of the total boys enrolled in school, came out for bowling. This is said to be the largest proportionate turnout for an interscholastic activity in the nation. The team always competes on an equal basis with the largest schools in south Nassau county. The varsity finished in fourth place while the junior varsity tied for third place. Mr. Pollock, bowling coach, states that average-wise they are both the best teams in our history. Golf Weather and golf course permitting, on every Monday afternoon in the Spring, Mr. Faulkner and the golf team travel to the green hills and dales of the Sewane Golf Club and enjoy an afternoon of golf. Although results have been satisfactory so far, a lack of interest has prevented golf from becoming an interscholastic sport in this school, and it has been kept on an intramural basis. 90 GOLF SQUAD—Left to right: Joseph Shanlcy, Albert Jacobsen. Rho Gamma is the honorary sports organization whose members are chosen on a basis of athletic ability, character, and certain scholastic requirements. The group sponsors the annual pep rally and aids in girls’ gym classes. The faculty adviser of this club is Miss McCord. 91 Varsity VARSITY CHEERLEADERS—Front Row, left to right: Donna Wheeler, Verne Muir, Elaine Punger, Barbara McKcon. Second Roiv: Nancy An- drew, Dorothy Pacelli, Nancy Nelson. Co-captain; Ellen Klappholtz, Cocaptain. Cheerleaders 92 J.V. J.V. CHEERLEADERS — Left to right: Sharon Dunphy, Pam Stev- ens, Jean Strong, B. Preston, Jill Warren. Captain; Laura Stelling. Nancy Horn, Valerie McLane, Louise Garay. Hockey The female equivalent of football has been called “the mob sport for sturdy girls.” This year, even with the school athletic field used as a parking lot, participation was excellent and many girls braved the threats of flying hockey balls and “sticks” to share their narrow strip of available land with the boys on the football field. HOCKEY HONOR TEAM—Front Row, left to right: R. Smith. M. Miller, N. Andrew, B. McKeon, K. Graves, V. Muir, B. Goldman. Second Row: L. Bergan, M. Judd, K. Tripp, E. Feltkamp. L. Garay, E. Kuhnel. Basketball The skillful game of “hoops” is a favorite at E.R.H.S. and always produces a good turnout. This year the season was especially successful with both the Sophs and Juniors having an undefeated record. The names of “moosie” and “Joan of Arc” became secret passwords for the deadly strategy' devised by the ingenious Miss McCord and may account for these victories. BASKETBALL HONOR TEAM—Front Row, left to right: Nancy Andrew, Linda Smillie, Martha Mac Miller, Annette Policastro, Pam Stevens. Second Row: Kathryn Tripp, Dorothy McKeon, Ellen Klappholtz, Dorothy Pacclli, Elaine Punger. Volleyball Even with the new “one tap” rule and higher nets, the girls, coached by Miss McCord, made a good showing for themselves, not only in technique, but in sportsmanship as well. With the score book showing a fair number of winnings, the intramural games highlighted the season and provided for some stiff competition. VOLLEYBALL HONOR TEAM— Front Row, left to right: Pam Stev- ens, Elaine Punger, Kathy Graves, Verne Muir. Ellen Klappholtz. Second Row: Marriannc Judd, Erika Feltkamp, Kathy Tripp, Lynn Bergen. BADMINTON HONOR TEAM—Left to right: Dillaye Davis, Dorothy McKeon, Pam Stevens, Alice Whitte, Caroline Engel. Badminton “Birdie-bouncing” is one of the favorite girls activities in the Fall and Spring. Under the able leadership of Miss Hartop, our badminton honor team completed one of its most successful seasons. Softball On the beautiful landscaped field of the East Rockaway softball diamond (better known as the “mud hole ) our valiant girls of the softball team overcame immense obstacles to complete a “slam bang’ season. SOFTBALL TEAM—Front Row, left to right: Pam Stevens, Annette Polocastro, Martha Mae Miller, Linda Smillie, Nancy Andrew. Second Row: Elaine Punger, Dorothy Pacelli, Ellen Klappholtz, Dorothy McKeon, Kathryn Tripp. 94 Bowling Under the able direction of Miss Kramer, our “experts” made a formidable record of strikes and spares. The co-ed expeditions with the boys bowling team to Woodmere Alleys were hailed as our venture into “progressive” education and it is hoped that the notion will be continued into future years. BOWLING HONOR TEAM Left to right: Judith Anderson, Naorni Tartus, Joan Bogutski, Linda Haynes, Barbara Goldman. TABLE TENNIS HONOR TEAM—Left to right: Helen Shanley. Martha Mae Miller, Nancy Andrew. Louise Garay. Table Tennis Ping pong is a favorite winter activity for our athletically-minded girls. Every Wednesday, high spirited girls man their paddles and overcome the dangers of slippery floors to win for our school a “top notch” position in the table tennis field. 95 SENIOR “Stretch!'’ “Seniors Reign’ is the theme of every Senior Day and this year’s was no exception. Senior day started with a student-conducted assembly, during which Dr. Bormann announced the top quarter of the class of 59. The Senior class’s “Last Will and Testament” was also read. Following the assembly, normal classes were held with Seniors filling in the teaching and administrative positions. After the day’s chores were completed, all attended a P.T.A.-sponsored tea. In the “Inner Sanctum.” “This, of course, is elementary 9th grade science. Executive conference in the “Green Room.” “Well, it’s a different excuse, anyway. SENIOR PLAY Tho Class of 59 was proud to introduce a new type of Senior Play this year, Thornton Wilder’s dramatic “Our Town.” Straying from the usual comedies and farces, the class undertook the tremendous task of presenting a play which had little or no comedy, which used almost no props or scenery, and which had a very large cast. This large cast, however, did an exceptionally fine job and came up with very pleasing and highly successful results. Hearty thanks go particularly to Mr. Kirsch, our capable director. His patience at rehearsals and his constant efforts to aid the cast in every way possible helped to make “Our Town” one of East Rockavvay’s finest Senior Plays. CAST Stage Manager ................... John Larson With their theme of “Idle Isle”, the Class of ’62 made an impressive showing with their colorful costumes, band, ingenious dances, and clever leopard cheering costumes. Under the leadership of their co-chairmen, Anne Goodspeed and Robert Varney, and their adviser, Miss Holton, the Freshman Class presented East Rockaway with an unforgettable performance. Freshmen Sophomores “Toyland” was brought to life this year by the Class of 1961 in an entrance sparked by clever dances, colorful costumes, and lively songs. Their fine class cooperation was evident in all phases of their work. Through the leadership of Larry Welch and Joanne Fox, co-chairmen, the Sophomores have made themselves a force to be reckoned with in future years. Rock Rivalry A unique presentation of the theme “Medieval Madness” was the Juniors’ as they came through with a surprisingly good performance in this year’s Rock Rivalry. This remarkably talented class, led by Ellen Klappholtz and Philip Thomas showed their fine spirit of sportsmanship in every phase of competition. We wish the Class of 1960 continued good luck next year. Juniors Seniors Rock Rivalry I heard the words I never thought I’d hear, A sickening feeling overcame me. The Juniors had won; they let out a cheer The night the Seniors lost Rock Rivalry. I sensed a moan, one of utter despair That seemed to say, “It's not true. It can’t be.’’ I left. I wanted to get out of there The night the Seniors lost Rock Rivalry. We had worked so hard, and we hadn’t won. Our girls were crying hysterically. The boys were silent, you know, sort of numb The night the Seniors lost Rock Rivalry. It’s like a dream, distant yet not quite gone. I still can’t believe it. Yet tragically Enough it happened to us. Then the girls wept on The night the Seniors lost Rock Rivalry. Our disappointment will never leave. The hurt will remain, unfortunately. We’ll never forget, we’ll always grieve For the night the Seniors lost Rock Rivalry. —John Woodyard, 49 Rock Michalcnc Kearney and Robert Jacobsen, Senior King and Queen Island Junior Prom As Juniors in 1958, the class of 59 presented the class of ’58 with a very gay and colorful prom entitled “Island Paradise.” Pineapples, punch, yards and yards of crepe paper, a good band, and a nightclub atmosphere all helped to make our prom a success. Things were not always in our favor, however, for the flower season came late and we had to work very hard for the many flowers we did manage to accumulate. All these things together helped to contribute to the many memories we have of our “bland Paradise.” Barbara McKeon and Harvey Jacobs, Junior Prince and Princess Senior Ledger CORRINE ABBOTT Corrine Rock Rivalry 1, 2, 3, 4; GULL 1, 2, 3, 4; Debating Club 2, 4; Service Squad 4; ROCK Staff 4; Hockey 1; Volleyball 1.
