Text from Pages 1 - 142 of the 1958 volume:

Prologue “Like as the waves roll from the pebbled shores, so do our minutes hasten to an end. Sonnet As Shakespeare captured the highlights of world history, we have striven to preserve the highlights of our own school history in this, the 1958 ROCK. Our stage will be East Rockaway High School; the dramatis personae, ourselves; and the climax of the drama, graduation. We shall attempt, in a modest way, to “turn the accomplishments of many years into an hour glass,” and we sincerely ask you, our audience, “Gently to hear, kindly to judge, our play.” CATHERINE A. MURPHY DEDICATION “From the top of her head to the soles of her feet, she is all mirth.” We will forget many things about East Rockaway High School, but we will not forget the person who has given so unstintingly of her time and energy to the class of ’58. We first were charmed by Miss Murphy in eighth grade when she introduced us to the world of literature. When it became time to select a class adviser we felt that a “down to earth”, friendly person like Miss Murphy would be the person we would like. She was a wise choice. Throughout our four years at East Rockaway High School Miss Murphy always had a moment to help solve a class crisis. She was never too busy to help us with Rock Rivalry, our Prom or our ROCK. We shall remember her dynamic personality, her wonderful sense of humor and her genuine interest in us. Our adviser, a person of diversified interests, enjoys conversation, music, reading, coffee and sports. Thank you, “Murf”, for teaching us to laugh when things went wrong, and for standing by us throughout four years. This is the record of the years you shared with us. To you, “Murf”, we dedicate the 1958 ROCK. 7 ADMINISTRATION To Dr. Studwellj go our thanks for the six enjoyable years we have spent in East Rockaway High School. We realize that he, as superintendent, is greatly responsible for the high character of our school. For his devoted administration of the East Rockaway Public Schools, and for his interest in us as future citizens, we, the class of ’58, would like to s y “Thank you.” DR HAROLD F. STUDWELL I Superintendent of Schools • ta Board of Education A debt of gratitude is owed to the Board of Education for their untiring effort in the school expansion program. Always keeping our best interests in mind, the men of the Board strive to make East Rock-away High School the finest on the Island. Parent Teackers Association The organization which brings our parents and our teachers together for our welfare. A great deal of thanks is due to the PTA for their work towards improving the school and community. 9 DR. HENRY H. BORMANN Principal of East Rockaway High School EAST ROCKAWAY PUBLIC SCHOOLS EAST ROCKAWAY, N. Y. HAROLD F. STUDWELL Superintendent NEVIN L. JUDD Principal-Elementary Schools HENRY H. BORMANN Principal-High School Dear Seniors, Now that you are about to separate from your friends here at school, you can understand better what Shakespeare meant when he wrote, Parting is such sweet sorrow. You are drawn closer to your friends; they mean more to you. So many thoughts of them are suddenly brought together in your mind that you would need Shakespeare's talent to express them all. You feel the joy of friendship and the sadness of parting — at the same moment. Your teachers and I are also feeling that sweet sorrow. We do not like to see you go because we have many colorful memories of you — happy, hectic, sometimes troubled, but finally triumphant. We would gladly express our many kindly thoughts toward you, but we also would need Shakespeare's genius to do them justice. We hope that our friendships with you will deepen as the years pass. It will always be a pleasure to help you in any way that we can. Your successes will continue to make us happy, especially when we can feel that we had a part, however small, in preparing you for them. We believe in you. We do not expect you to escape cares and problems in the years ahead. We only hope that you will have the wisdom and courage to deal witii them. May God bless each one of you. Sincerely your friend. His realm includes the hall cops, usherettes, ticket sellers, receptionists, and cafeteria workers. The people who have made life more efficient at East Rockaway by helping as hall cops, projectionists, receptionists, nurse’s aids, ticket sellers, cafeteria wardens, secretaries, usherettes, and working on the assembly squad, are the members of our Service Squad. Points accumulated from these activities are the basis for the service awards. A minor letter is 5 points, a major letter 10, and the Kiwanis Key, the highest service award, is 20 points. With his magic baton he prepares his choral groups for the many programs they present throughout the year. Many of us owe our love and appreciation for fine music to him. MR. HENRY H. FORDHAM In the two years that Mr. Pellicane has been teaching in East Rockaway High School he has developed the band into a well blended organization. He has also been influential in the organization and direction of our school dance band, which plays at many social functions throughout the school year. MR. JOHN PELLICANE Tk e Gondoliers On November 5th and 6th the senior chorus presented Gilbert and Sullivan’s “The Gondoliers”. The operetta is set in Venice and centers around two young gondoliers and their new wives. Complications arise when they discover one of them is actually the King of Barataria. At that moment the rather moth-eaten Duke of Plaza-Toro, his pompous wife, and their daughter Casilda arrive on the scene to claim the King for Casilda’s husband. Of course, there are many amusing incidents which result in a happy ending. Chorus members will remember the long hours of rehearsal and the many laughs involved in the production of the operetta. We certainly won’t forget Linda’s slide, Kenny’s lion-wig and that make-up! Much of the success of the operetta is due to the untiring efforts of Mr. Fordham. Thanks are in order also to Miss Judy Smogi, the chorus accompanist, and Mrs. Charlotte Rogers, our organist. 74 THE GONDOLIERS by Gilbert and Sullivan DRAMATIS PERSONAE Fiametta ............ Senior Chorus On any Monday evening one can hear the chorus practicing their latest undertaking in the music room. Chorus members are often “sleepy-eyed students” Mondays and Wednesdays, because the group rehearses at 8:00 on these mornings. One of our most versatile organizations, the chorus’s repertoire ranges from the classics to light popular numbers. The senior Chorus has spent a very active year. Under the baton of Mr. Henry Fordham, they presented Gilbert and Sullivan’s “The Gondoliers” in November, Menotti’s “Amahl and the Night Visitors” for the Christmas program, the Cantata “The Highway Man” in March, participated in the New York State School Music Association Competition in May, and presented their annual Spring Concert in the same month. 76 SINGERS: Front Row, left to right: J. Under the direction of Mr. Fordham, the “talented twelve” are a popular group in the community as well as in the school. In addition to their chorus work, they sang in the New York State Sectional Chorus and sang five concerts for local civic clubs. During football season the band in their bright orange and black uniforms presented their original “halftime shows”. The band’s portion of the Christmas program was highly entertaining and was considered one of the high points of the show. This spring the band is busily preparing for their part in the New York State School Music Association Competition, and their spring festival. SENIOR BAND: Front Row, left to right: M. Schneider, G. The junior chorus received an A rating last year for their wonderful performance in the New York State Competition. All the members of the junior chorus are continually practicing and looking forward to the day when they will be members of the senior chorus. I unior Band The junior band, under the direction of Mr. Pel-licane, provides an opportunity for novices to receive the experience of playing in a band. This organization also takes part in many of the music programs throughout the year and on some occasions combines with the senior band when the effect of a large organization is needed. 80 Miss McCord From “hockey weather” to the season of “things”, Miss “McTwine” is always busy. Through her efforts East Rockaway’s girls have been most successful in their L. I. G. A. competitions. She has not stopped at teaching us how to swing a bat or make a foul shot, however; she has taught us good sportsmanship and fair play. Mr. Faulkner Mr. Faulkner, our versatile athletic director, is truly “one of our most unforgettable characters.” He adds his inimitable spark of humor to all his endeavors. RL o Gamma Les Girls” One of the highest honors for an East Rockaway girl to receive is membership in Rho Gamma, the girls’ honorary athletic society. Once she is a member, she can be seen proudly sporting the traditional red and white jacket. The girls assist Miss McCord in gym classes, join the gym leaders in the “better school” program, sponsor the annual Pep Rally, and exert their leadership ability in all phases of school life. Miss McCord is the Rho Gamma advisor. The ’57-’58 officers are: President, Maureen O’Rourke; Vice-President, Dorothy Copeland; Secretary, Anne Marie Bird; Treasurer, Heidi Keil. 83 ROCKS MIKE 85 FOOTBALL After two unsuccessful seasons, the ROCKS proved that tenacity pays off by making an impressive showing for the ’57 football year. Although we lost our opener to St. Agnes, the boys chalked up three very substantial victories—37-0 against Floral Park; 32-6 against Half Hollow Hills; and 46-7 in our final game with Plainview. The untiring efforts of Mr. Freund, backfield coach, and Mr. Kennedy, our line coach, have gone into making the ROCKS both athletes and sportsmen. Because only five men are graduating, the ROCKS are looking forward to another successful season next year. Eddie, Ryder, Mr. Freund, Frankie Krassner I he Hermans on Award Members of the varsity football team choose each year for the Hermanson Award the player who they feel has contributed most to the team in both athletic prowess and sportsmanship. Mr. Faulkner is the basketball coach. 90 Rain or shine, regardless of the score, our cheerleaders can be heard urging the team on with “Go ROCKS Go.” These girls are our best, because they wear their cheering uniforms to represent East Rockaway. Members of our Varsity cheerleading squad are Dorothy Copeland and Grace Niederstein (co-captains), Heidi Keil, Carol Humphrey, Caroline Settele, Ruth Widman, Ellen Klappholz, Nancy Nelson and Connie Waine. 93 J. This spring with Hoppner as captain and a veteran squad returning, Coach Sackman’s nine should make things hot for its Section III rivals. 95 The sport that provides a place for everyone is track. From the hurdles to the broad-jump our boys show their athletic prowess in the various field and running events. Ed Ryder, who accumulated the highest amount of points in his junior year, will captain this year’s squad. The boys will remember their coach Mr. Berg by his stopwatch, rugged jokes and good sportsmanship. 96 Boys’ Bowlin Boys’ Bowling . . . Under the direction of Messrs. The girls’ answer to football, our most active girls’ sport, requires hours of strenuous practice. The Hockey Honor Team attired in the stunning “Uglies” played, and shivered at their sportsday at Salisbury. Their coach is Miss McCord. The beginning of the girls’ basketball season brings many sounds of laughter and excitement from the gym. The girls, coached by Miss McCord, demonstrate very ably the skill and dexterity needed for the game of “hoops”. Swift passing, accurate shooting and good sportsmanship helped the girls to a victorious season. BASKETBALL HONOR TEAM: Front Row, left to right: M. Miller, M. O’Rourke, C. Lindberg, V. Muir. With the expert guidance of Miss McCord, and the concentration of all the girls, East Rockaway proved itself by coming in second at the volleyball honor team playoffs. Battledore and shuttlecock is one of the most popular fall sports among the girls because of the skill and co-ordination that is required. BADMINTON: From Row. left to right: G. Niederstein, C. With fine fielding and sturdy hitters the girls are assured of a successful season. Bowling The crash of ten pins falling is a common sound when our girls are bowling. Strikes and spares are no strangers to our experts. The team had a successful season and came in at the sportsday. Heidi Keil was our champ with a stellar 180. Now Senior Day is the one day in East Rockaway when the graduating class holds complete sway over the school. The students conduct an assembly, teach the underclassmen, and attend a tea. This year for the first time the ROCK has secured the kindergarten and first grade pictures of the present graduating class in order to show the complete metamorphosis that has taken place over the years. We hope that you will all get a good laugh out of it. SENIOR Hard work and devoted enthusiasm must accompany the successful production of any play. The senior presentation of A Ready-Made Family was no exception; but the combined efforts of our director, Mr. Luthor Kirsch; our stage manager, Barbara McCann; our prompter, Judy Luck; and our hard-working stage crew made our play a success. We will always remember the ways of a thespian as taught to us by Mr. Kirsch, and the many laughs shared in rehearsals. PLAY A READY-MADE FAMILY CAST Mr. Henry Turner..... Gene Hiscock A farce in three acts by Jay Tobias ROCK RIVALRY For their debut our Frosh took us to “Old Me-he-co” in the days of Pancho Villa. Their clever songs and dances insure us of fine entrances in the future. Especially noteworthy are the fine art entries of our Freshmen. Their unusual posters brought them a well-deserved first, and their mural placed a strong third. The Class of ’61 will make their mark in future Rock Rivalries. Fres men 106 107 ROCK RIVALRY omores Congratulations to our sister class! The sophs chose “College Daze” and very cleverly depicted life at Mill River U. With a delightful entrance, and strong placing in the athletic events the Class of ’60 took second place in Rock Rivalry. The sophs have shown themselves to be truly a fine class and their future years in Rock Rivalry are sure to be successful. 108 ROCK RIVALRY no umi -1 I Juniors With an exceptionally talented class, the Juniors picked a theme that would give them the chance to use this talent and their originality to its fullest. “Music Music Music” gave them just that opportunity. By combining musical ability, with color, singing and dancing the Juniors produced a superior entrance. Their reputation for originality was evident in their clever bass-fiddle stand and bass-fiddle cheering costumes. Best of luck next year Juniors! ROCK RIVALRY Seniors “Operation Cooperation”, the password of the seniors won us the coveted cup. We selected “Russian Skies” and with gay costumes, skillful dancing and charming songs, we depicted life in Czar-ist Russia. We are especially proud of our first place entrance because it has awarded us the distinction of being the first class in Rock Rivalry history to have three first place entrances. Our first place mural and stand added to the Russian flavor, but perhaps the most popular of all our offerings was our cheerleaders. “We are the Rah-sian bears” they yelled while breaking through the bars of their cage dressed as cubs. We have enjoyed the privilege of participating in Rock Rivalry... “The time has come for us to leave you . .. Fond memories we leave behind” There are many people “behind the scenes” of Rock Rivalry. It is through the cooperation of all members of the faculty and student body that an activity like Rock Rivalry can exist. Our thanks for the smooth working of Rock Rivalry go to the faculty who supervise the various phases, the Rules Committee who each year review the structure of Rock Rivalry and formulate the schedule, the technical advisers and to Miss Gertrude Decker who coordinates all phases of Rock Rivalry. March will always find Miss Decker engaged in a variety of activities; rolling backdrop paper down the hall, hanging posters, pouring paint and helping students to derive the most satisfaction and benefit from Rock Rivalry. MISS GERTRUDE DECKER 114 sem u y The purpose of the assembly at East Rockaway is to call the school together in order to create and maintain a feeling of unity among the student body. Our faculty committee selects interesting programs of outside entertainment which always prove very enjoyable. Many programs are presented by the students themselves such as a preview of the operetta, the senior play and the favorite . . . the Rock Rivalry assembly. 115 JAPANESE Junior Prom In our Junior Prom we presented “Japanese Gardens.” After our Rock Rivalry theme of Japan, we considered ourselves well-versed in matters of Japanese culture and customs. It is very hard to transform a gymnasium into a magical or romantic ballroom. By draping crepe paper from the center we created a warm close room . 116 GARDENS However, we had not counted on the weather to be as damp and humid as it was. The morning of the prom our beautiful ceiling was hanging very low. We repaired the damage and added real goldfish to our wishing pond. All in all our prom was a success and will always give us fond memories. 117 On the Friday night preceding the first home football game Rho Gamma sponsors the annual Pep Rally. The evening starts with a parade around East Rockaway, which is led by Rho Gamma carrying the school banner. The band, twirlers, float, team, cheerleaders, and crowd all join in to boost school and team spirit. Back at school there is a giant bonfire that seniors try to make larger every year. Cheers are led while the spectators watch “that other team roast. To round out the social picture, a dance is held in the gym at which time the varsity football team is introduced. The Pep Rally is the first social event of our school year and is always a great success.
