For the past two years Mr. Berg has guided ’51 through fair and foul weather but always towards a worthwhile goal. His friendliness and sense of humor are an integral part of his sincere personality, which we seniors, thoroughly appreciate. Discussions in Mr. Berg's classes are well publicized around the school, whether the topic be girls’ hairdoes or a current political issue. Questions arising from these debates make us more conscious of Mr. Berg’s fine ability to understand all points of view. We fondly dedicate our most prized achievement, our Yearbook, to the man who has done the most for us, Mr. Berg. MR. BERG AND FAMILY Left to Right: Mrs. Berg, Karen, Brian, and Mr. Berg. 5 We, the seniors, have recorded our four memorable school years in this, our book, the Rock edition of 1951. We have emphasized our senior year, because we feel it has been the best one of all. However, some things cannot be expressed exactly as we wish. It is impossible to describe the wonderful class spirit and will to win that have crowned our great success as a group. We have learned to appreciate the great influence our teachers have on our lives; we shall remember them and everything they have done for us. This yearbook is a memento of our never-to-be forgotten senior year. Because we feel that our school life is based on a pattern of events and activities which have been stormy, troubled, calm and finally sunny, we have chosen ''The Seasons” for our theme. This edition of The Rock, our yearbook, has been created by and for us . . . the senior class of 1951. DR. HAROLD STUDWELL Superintendent of Schools DR. HENRY H. Gladys Olson and William Berg are the advisers who are responsible for the Service Squad's fine work. The officers are: John MacHarg, president; Barbara Meske, vice-president; Jane Gobroski, secretary; and Joan Warner, treasurer. Gladys Olson and William Berg are the faculty advisers. Latin may be a dead language but the members of the Forum Romanum, advised by Mrs. Dorothy Meske, certainly have proved otherwise. The highlight of the year's activities was the treasure hunt with the clues in Latin at the Christmas party. The annual picnic was also an event to be remembered by all the pueri and puellae. SPANISH CLUB FRENCH CLUB The Spanish Club, advised by Miss Holten, high-lighted it’s year with a gigantic party in which a play was given by the club members. A Spanish movie was shown, and refreshments were served. An active organization this year, the Spanish Club is headed by Carol Loewinger, president; Robert James, vice-president; and Nancy Combs, secretary-treasurer. “La stance est ouverte! are the first words heard at the meetings of Le Cercle Fran ;ais. This club, newly formed last year, is right in the swing of things and is becoming one of the most active clubs in the school. In order to further interest in the language for conversational purposes, the meetings are conducted entirely in French by our capable president, Barbara Meske. JIM KIZIS JULIUS ZIMMERMAN CHARLIE CRAIG FOOTBALL The cold winds, the hard practices, the sweat, the dirt, all are realistic reminders of the past football season. Under the friendly dictatorship of Nevin Judd, Richard Hermanson, Luther Kirsch, and Douglas Sackman, the Rocks of the ’50 season sandwiched an exciting season between their opening loss to a powerful Manhasset squad and their final conquest of Long Beach in the last game of the season. High point of the season was the 13-to-6 victory over Lynbrook on the greensward of Allen Field. Hard-fought ties with Woodmere, Westhampton Beach and Eastern Military Academy and losses to Roslyn and Oyster Bay rounded out the schedule. The defensive play of co-captain Joe Carrigan, Harry Breul and Charlie Craig rocked the opposing offenses back on their heels while co-captain Willie Waine, Eddie Goldman and Don Reid rolled up the yardage for East Rockaway Win, lose or draw it was a thrilling season for the followers of the Rocks. 20 1 st Row, left to right: N. Sudmann, C. Seymour, D. Kunath, B. MacCarthy. 2nd Row: R. Giordano, R. Lee, B. Kaers, H. Wintermann, N. Combs, S. Pedersen, J. Intemann, S. Gezairlian, H. Bantzhaff. HOCKEY HONOR TEAM This year the Hockey Honor Team captured a tie for second-place in the first annual round robin tournament of South Shore schools. Our energetic stick wielders led by captain Doris Kunath and coached by Miss Eileen McCord, missed the coveted championship by only one point. 21 22 The gym echoes with the swish of raquets and the pounding of racing feet when the girls’ badminton team engages in this sport of old India. Miss Emily Goodwin coached the girls in the methods of getting the elusive shuttlecock over the high net and Nancy Edwards made the semifinals of the play-offs at Oceanside. Each Thursday afternoon during the Spring and Autumn, East Rockaway's more active horse lovers, under the sponsorship of Miss Emily Goodwin, are bounced happily over to the Bilt-more Stables in the faithful hearse. The three classes, Beginners, Intermediate and Advanced, trained hard and faithfully with their favorite mounts for the annual horse show held at the end of the Fall season. Nancy Edwards became the 5th consecutive East Rockaway girl to take top honors in the show. Left to right: Mr. Maynard, M. Mac Aleese, J. Musgrove, E. Hennefeld, P. Goza, G. Yasvin, M. BOYS’ BOWLING Bowling fans in E.R.H.S. saw a vastly improved squad of varsity keglers take to the lanes this year. Although they won only four of their ten matches, they were a consistent threat to any team in the league. Setting the pace for the Rocks was Bill Kellerman who rolled a sizzling high series of 568 and concluded the season with an overall average of 162. GIRLS’ BOWLING The girls’ bowling team bowls every Monday on the Oceanside alleys. These keg-lerettes have won and lost the same number of matches but their fine skill showed when they placed fourth in the girls’ bowling play-day. Honor team members are: Margie Gorr, Joan Intemann, Betty Smith, Carol Loewinger, and Carole Krueger. 1st Row, left to right: M. Gorr, J. Intemann, B. Smith, C. Loewinger, C. Krueger. 2nd Row: W. SENIOR PLAY Our Hearts Were Young and Gay” as presented this year by the Senior Class was a successful dramatic production long-to-be remembered by the cast as well as the audience. Who will ever forget Bob Barker’s authentic French accent, the wobbly double-decker bunk bed, Jack Settele’s very efficient 3rd Act manner, Cornelia’s measles, and Emily’s ballet? Barbara Meske as the ever-so-worldly Cornelia and Phyllis Greene as her naive, nutty side-kick, Emily, kept the audience laughing. The Senior cast owes a gret of (latitude” to Mrs. Marion Howard and to Miss Agnes Hickman for their untiring efforts and help, and last but not least to the men behind the scenes, Mr. T” and his stage crew ’’Host,” Kell, Willie,” Reidy,” Harry, Charlie, and Carboy, whose creative abilities transformed the stage into a ship’s stateroom. 24 (Etjristmafi Carrying lighted candles and marching to ' Adeste Fidelis,” the chorus provided a memorable spectacle at the annual Christmas program. The singers, Junior Chorus and the high school band also participated. Following the established custom the program ended with Cantique de Noel.” This year the alumni present were asked to sing with the combined choruses in the last number. The Christmas Program, greatly appreciated by all, filled everyone with that familiar Christmas Spirit.” Front, left to right: S. Gezairlian. 1st Rank: D. Warner, J. Coe, D. Mattes, A. Tripp, R. Certainly, no one will ever forget their delicate performance of the ’'Nutcracker Suite,” or their excellent rendition of Excerpts from South Pacific.” As we analyze our four short years, we find, outstanding in our memories, the spirited Christmas programs, the cheery assemblies and the delightful spring festivals. Mr. Fordham’s unflagging and contagious enthusiasm has been a motivating factor in our participation in, and our enjoyment of these musical programs. SINGERS This versatile group of twelve selected voices has continued in its second year to make beautiful music together.” Sporting their new navy blue blazers, the talented twelve” harmonize in both song and dress. Under the direction of Henry Fordham the Singers” have performed with much success throughout the community. The group’s adaptability to all types of music has contributed greatly to its popularity. Attired in new robes, the chorus showed its fine musical talent at the Variety Show, Christmas Program, and Spring Festival. In addition to regular rehearsals, sectional rehearsals were held weekly. Officers elected to aid Mr. Fordham were: Jack Settele, president; Phyllis Greene, vice-president; Nancy Sudmann, secretary. 28 Cut!! the voice of Marshall Brown shouting this familiar word is significant to dance band members who know that a clam has just been hit. Perfection is the motto of this popular organization which attracts many listeners to its noon-hour rehearsals. Mr. Brown's modern ideas on music and his strenuous rehearsals have made the dance band a professional and smooth-sounding outfit. Front Row, left to right: R. Lee, R. Giordano. 2nd Row: G. There are only bones where there should be brains.” These words are associated with a Rho Gamma pledge’s being initiated into this honorary sports society. Membership is regarded highly by the selected girl athletes in the school. The club sponsors the Pep Rally Dance in the early Fall and assists in gym classes. To create, maintain, and extend throughout the school and community, high standards of Christian living.” The Alpha chapter of the Girls’ Hi-Y has followed through this ideal in many ways. They sent a basket of food to a needy family in the community, and at Christmas they beautifully decorated the doors to every classroom and decorated a tree in the foyer. The officers are: Joan Warner, president; Barbara Meske, vice-president; Betty Jean Cooke, treasurer; and Phyllis Greene, secretary. J. Berwind, D. Kunath, J. Colletti, B. Cooke, nings, E. The purpose of the club is to assist Mr. Judd in all phases of the required gym activities. Its members must be approved by the faculty, and only a limited number of freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors may be admitted at one time. They created a new interest in E.R.H.S. by sponsoring two programs of donkey-basketball. The hilarious antics of the club members as they were tossed about by the donkeys proved to be a highlight of the school year. The officers of the Boys’ Leaders Club are: Wilfred Waine, president; John Kelly, vice-president; William Swane, secretary; and Donald Reid, treasurer. Seated: A. Tartus, I. Bird, P. Greene, W. Although this is the first year of cheering for most of these girls, their school spirit and enthusiasm have shown them to be good Varsity material. BASKETBALL HONOR TEAM Swish!” Our girls’ basketball team has just made another basket. The opponents’ moaning and groaning heard at our games result from the great guarding of Stretch Seymour, who lets no ball pass her at the center line. Coached by Miss Decker and captained by Barbara Hem-mings, these girls have shown wonderful pep, cheerfulness and good sportsmanship in all of their games. Top Row, left to right: P. Day, J. A-fivc 37 ROCK Without Rock Rivalry at East Rockaway High a certain something would be lacking. It is the most anticipated and most enjoyable competitive event held during the school year. This year's show was an exceptionally gala one. The Frosh took us to Alaska to see the Northern Lights”; the Sophs led us into the deepest interior of the Dark Continent ; and the Juniors serenaded us with music from Hawaii. The Seniors concluded a delightful evening In An Old Dutch Garden.” RIVALRY Papa Jano's garden beside the Zyder Zee is the setting for the Seniors’ entrance. Here the two lovers, Kris and Jeanette overcome Papa’s objections to their marriage. With the background of a constantly turning windmill, the performances of Dyke Van Dyke, the Tulip Sisters and the brass band, added to the brightness and gaiety of In An Old Dutch Garden. The Seniors’ rendition of When You Wore a Tulip” was a highlight of the production but the entire cast of singers and dancers helped to present the most cqlorful entrance of the entire evening. His faithful camera coverage of all school functions has recorded in fine style our last year in school. CUSTODIANS in iHmnrtam Fredrick Schlottman was a beloved custodian in East Rockaway High School for many years. His jovial personality and his kind manner towards all made him a friend of everyone. We have all lost a considerate and sincere pal. These good-natured fellows may often be seen following some forgetful student to his locker with the pass key. They are always willing to give a helping hand in all emergencies. Without them behind the scenes, this friendly” school couldn't run as smoothly as it does. Left to right: C. Muller, R. Seaman, S. Mayer, G. Boes. 48 This quartet has been efficiently running the class of 51 in its last year. With Bill Swane occasionally cracking the whip and Phyl Greene diligently collecting the dues, the seniors have had a successful year. Ably assisting were Nancy Sudmann, secretary; and Jack Settele, vice-president. By carrying out the National Honor Society's high ideals of character, scholarship, leadership, and service, the members of this group become well-knowns” in the high school. Their impressive induction services are held semi-annually. Guided by Miss Gertrude Decker, the society was under the leadership of Bill Swane, president; Phyllis Greene, vice-president; Barbara Meske, secretary; and Jack Settele, treasurer. Seated. N.
