EAST ROCKAUAT SCHOOL DEDICATION The class of 1950 is leaving E.R.H.S.; perhaps we shall forget many things about our Alma Mater, but we shall take with us always the memory of Albert S. Tutunjian. We cannot express in words our feeling for Mr. T.” He has stood by us through all our troubles and difficulties. We will long remember his work on the Senior Play; his terrific parties; and his performance in Mama’s Baby Boy.” He pulled us through two successful Rock Rivalries and he has been our counselor, friend and pal since the day he walked up the gang plank. There was never a question to whom we should dedicate our Rock.” Our undebated choice is Mr. T”—for service far and above the call of duty.” Our relationship as teacher and student ends this year but our friendships will last as long as life itself. Individual instruction is the keynote lor Mechanical Drawing. Mr. T’s” secretaries and drawing experts. Duke, Greg, Dick, Johnny, Al, Mr. T (at the He teaches Algebra too! dumbag) and Hio comprise the Union City A. G. A. U. Kefchees. 3 FOREWORD From our first days at East Rockaway, we have realized the time would come when we would publish a yearbook of our own. We chose our theme, the Spanish Main, because we feel that like the buccaneers of old, our lives have been filled with hard work as well as laughter, gaiety, music and deviltry. In our ROCK we have tried to record all our memories and the people connected with them, as well as our future plans. The senior class proudly presents as its final undertaking, the ROCK for 1950. BOARD OF EDUCATION This year the Board of Education under the leadership of President Robert Pape saw a long-awaited dream come true when its proposal for a $625,000 addition to the high school was approved by the people of the school district. The new auditorium and shop building will be a concrete reminder of the constant efforts of the Board of Education to improve the East Rockaway school system. PARENT-TEACHER ASSOCIATION Without the P.T.A., one of the school’s most necessary organizations, we, the class of ’50 would not have had as fine an education as we have had. The P.T.A. encourages parent-teacher talks which enable the teacher to understand and help the student better. But this is only one of its many worthy activities. This year the P.T.A. produced a riotous play called Mama’s Baby Boy” starring our own Mr. T.” SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS D. Doolittle, D. Wilkie, H. Scimeca. J. Falkner. With its able leaders and determination to reach the final port in a blaze of glory, we can readily predict a bright future for these sophomores. Their Rock Rivalry performances are a sure sign of this. Leading the class in looking forward to an even more successful year next year are its officers: President, Joan Colletti; Vice-president, Bob Schade; Secretary, Margie Gorr; Treasurer, Rose Giordano; and adviser, Mrs. Ida B. JUNIOR CLASS Besides spending many weary hours decorating for the annual Junior Prom and selling jello, the members of the class of ’51 found time to take part in every phase of school life. They are well represented on the teams, and in the clubs, and are right on hand when scholastic honors are passed out. We have no qualms about turning the responsibilities of a senior class over to such a capable crew. In command this year were: President, Bill Swane; Vice-president, Jack Settele; Secretary, Jerrie Reid; Treasurer, Jay Matthews; and adviser, Mr. Berg. First Row—D. Maclay, M. Hoadlev, P. Greene, N. Our Senior Play was a successful venture from the monetary standpoint as well as the dramatic. After nearly six weeks of hectic rehearsals January Thaw” was ready for presentation. As we waited with bated breaths for the curtain to rise, we recalled the riotous happening of those last few weeks. Our rehearsals were maddening. Fits of laughter and comic clown--ing prevailed. The lack of props, sleepless nights, the full moon, and the encouraging words of Mr. Kirsch ( Now, do it well.”) all added to the general pandemonium. We will never forget the inimitable mannerisms of John O’Neil as Matt, or Ed Small's playing Paula when J.B. was absent, or when Bruce put his boots on the wrong feet during the all-important fire sequence. Uncle Walter’s raccoon overcoat, Bob Hardie’s New England accent, the breakfast of cornflakes, olives, and molasses and Dick’s famous line ( Here he is, Carson”) will always remain in our memory. 39 Third Row—Donald Wehmann, Phillip Bacalla, John Bresnihan, Frank Schmidt. HIGH SCHOOL CHORUS This year the High School Chorus has many fine achievements listed in its log. Under its skipper Henry H. Fordham, the High School Chorus has sailed over many rough seas while preparing the operetta and other programs. The tension at tedious rehearsals is often lessened by the subtle wit of the director. The East Rockaway High School Chorus will always be one of the finest organizations of our school. 40 Third Row-Robert Nolan, Charlie Muller, James Jackson, Douglas Wilke, Clark Perry, Jack Settele, Joseph Pacelli. BAND During the fall, the school band, under the direction of Marshall Brown showed remarkable marching spirit at each home football game. His number one, two and three cheers including a Pepsi-Cola-hits-the-spota’la-Brown-fight-yell, were the spirit of the games. Not only in marches but in high brow” music has the band performed well. We will all remember White Christmas and many other songs played at the Christmas program. As in years past, the combined efforts of Mr. Fordham and Mr. Brown make the East Rockaway High School Band one of the best. 42 Second Row-Bill Swane, Bill Kellerman, James Jackson, Clark Perry, Robert Schade, Henry Fordham, Jr. First Row—Diane Sanders, Barbara Deans, Carol Slade, Phyllis Greene, Nancy Withrow, Janet Laue. “THE SINGERS” This year, under the supervision of Mr. Henry H. Fordham, an a cappella” choir has been formed. It includes twelve students, selected from the High School Chorus and one versatile director who sings anything from basso pro-fundo to lyric soprano. The officers were Barbara Bunting, president; June Hamilton, vice-president; Clair Jung, treasurer; and Georgianna Ullmann, secretary. The adviser is Mrs. Marjorie Nelson. The officers of the council are: Herbert Kelty, President; Robert Lee, Vice-president; Phyllis Greene, Secretary; and Joan Intemann, Treasurer. Miss Gladys Olson and William Berg are the faculty advisers. DEBATING CLUB These determined debaters discussed a wide variety of subjects at their Friday afternoon meetings. Their topics ranged from sex education to socialized medicine and were always heatedly debated. In October the group argued the question Is The American Home Breaking Up? at the P.T.A. meeting, and were called back in April to take part in a student-parent forum on What Do We Expect Of Our Parents and What Do They Expect Of Us?” The group was advised by William Berg. The gym was completely filled with pine and it smelled wonderful. Candy canes and Christmas stars, angel hair and tinsel were everywhere; and even if the streamers did droop a little, the gym looked gay and Christmasy. Under the direction of Chairman Barbara Bunting and Decorations Chairman Joan Roberts, our Junior Prom and Senior Proms will always be remembered. The officers are Consul, Joan Roberts; Vice-consul, Beth Bolton; Scribe, Jimmy Kizis; Quaestor, Bill Kellerman. Bonjour mes amis!” This is the greeting which one would hear if he entered a meeting of the newly-formed Cercle Frangais. This year, the members of the French classes decided that they wanted to form a club to further their interest in the customs and language of France. They have done just that even to the point of conducting their meetings strictly in French which is often a problem not only to the president, Diane Sanders, but to the whole club. Nevertheless, the club has proved to be a great success and all its members enjoy it immensely. Other officers are: Donald Wehmann, Vice-president; Barbara Meske, Secretary; and Phyllis Greene, Treasurer. The Freshmen with their theme of Switzerland, turned in an especially enjoyable performance and placed fourth. The sophomores staged an upset by defeating the Junior's Tomorrow’s World and capturing second place with Bagdad. RIVALRY The Senior's Sidewalks of New York completely captivated the audience and won the cup. The six-passenger trolley, Desire”; the inspiring Salvation Army band; Pasquale, the organ grinder, and his daughter Rosa; the barbershop quartet; as well as the entire cast produced one of the finest entrances East Rockaway has ever seen. All four classes experienced a change in this year’s Rock Rivalry, the new scoring system which proved to be very successful. They had height and speed and in the two years ahead of them they should blossom into the best varsity ever to grace our court. Second Row—Valdis Vipulis, Richard Fullam, Eugene Schlader. Harry Shepherd, Uldis Vipulis, Chester Heinz. First Row—Donald Warner, Robert Smith, Joseph Wymes, Richard Wetherell, Robert Rodriques, Phillip Fahringer. FRESHMAN BASKETBALL Freshman basketball is one of the best ways of finding and developing future J.V. and Varsity stars. The basic fundamentals of basketball are taught to these boys by Nevin Judd so that as they advance in high school they will better understand the game. Second Row—Kathleen Malloy, Herma Bantzhaff, Carol Seymour. First Row—Joanne Ber-wind, Doris Hardy, Nancy Sudmann. J. V. CHEERLEADERS A group of girls who get little credit for all their hard work and long lunch-hour practice sessions is this lively crew of J.V. cheerleaders. During the football season, they joined the varsity to help cheer on our victorious football team. This is the first year of cheering for most of the girls and everyone knows they are doing a very good job of it. With these girls on varsity next year, we shall have the pep and spirit for successful teams. Circle—Margie Gorr, Charlotte Berkoben, Doris Hardy, Joanne Berwind, Flo Wymes, Lynn Murray, Kathy Malloy, Annette Barbara. Carol Seymour. Herma Bantzhaff. Joan Intemann, Nancy Sudmann, Margie Kakariko. Joan Bantzhaff. Center—Betty Gambee, Marilyn Brown, Co-captains. Left to Right—Margie Gorr, Joan Bantzhaff, Marilyn Brown, Betty Anne Gambee, Joan Intemann, Janet Laue, Lynn Murray, Florence Wymes. VARSITY CHEERLEADERS This year our teams have been very successful, and much of this credit should be directed toward the cheerleaders, who are forever doing their utmost to lead our boys on to victory. In football, as well as basketball, this group of girls continued to urge on the Rocks with their unbounded pep and spirit. We do hope that in the years to come, the group of girls chosen to be the cheerleaders will do as well as the girls have done this past year. 71 Kneeling—R. Calvert, E. Goldman, W. Raymond, C. Treacy, C. Frost, R. Richter. Standing—W. Berg, Coach, J. Apostalides, J. Pacelli, J. Smillie, J. Alexander, K. Krassner. D. Wilkie. R. James, D. Jacobsen, J. O’Neill, E. Smith, G. Conklin, C. Williams, R. Seymour. TflACK For the first time in the history of the school, East Rockaway's fleet-footed trackmen boast of an undefeated season. Under the guidance of Coach William Berg our Sons of Mercury” swept seven straight dual meets and climaxed the season by taking third place in the class B championships. Returning this year and looking for an even better season are many of last year's veterans including such high point getters as Ed Goldman, Class B champion in the 220 and 100 yard dashes; Mike Frost, high point getter in the field events; and Doug Wilke last year's Class B low hurdle winner. Henry Scimeca, Ronnie Brown, Bruce Gunther, Charles Frost, Charles Craig, John Bresnihan, Joe Carrigan, Kenneth Neusch, Carlton Treacy, Mr. Sackman, Bobbv Schmitz, Alfred Petry, Frank Rodriques, Sal Trupo, Ronnie Hoppner, Dave Brown, Ed Ayers, Paul Dougherty. BASEBALL Long will the memories of the baseball season linger with us. The team coached by Douglas Sackman won only 1 game, but they always gave an opponent a run for its money.” We will never forget the thrilling win of Ken Neusch over Malverne which ruined their chance of leading the league. Neither will we forgt the Woodmere game played in a cloudburst; the heartbreaking loss to Sewanhaka after 12 innings of play; or the bitter end to the last game of the season with Baldwin. 73 74 Office Staff: Carolyn Schempp, Marie Lee. Faculty Advisors: Mr. Douglas Sackman, Mr. John Ruckdeschel, Mrs. Ida Shimans, Mr. Albert Tutunjian. ACKNOWLEDGEMENT We, the Class of ’50, are sincerely grateful to all those who have helped to make our yearbook a success. We wish to thank Mr. Douglas Sackman, our literary adviser, for his untiring, never-ending assistance; Mr. John Ruckdeschel, business adviser; and Mrs. Ida Shimans, our art adviser. Last, but far from least, our thanks to Mr. Albert Tutunjian, because without him our yearbook would never have been launched; and to all those members of our class who worked side by side for a successful yearbook, our heartfelt appreciation. CUSTODIANS In any good organization there are always men behind the scenes who deserve much more credit than they ever receive. Such are our worthy custodians who have always shown themselves capable of meeting any emergencies. Top Row— Bill and Jim.” Seated— Freddie and Charlie.” Our thanks also go to the man behind the camera, Leo D'Amato of the Tudor Studios in Rockville Centre. Day or night, whenever school functions were held, Leo was on hand to record them in his fine camera style.
