MR. JOHN A. RUCKDESCHEL Mr. Schel” at work. Left to right: P. Ryan, D. Wilcox, Mr. Ruckdeschel. The Ruckdeschel Family. Left to right: Mrs. Ruckdeschel, Ellen Francis, Jack, Mr. Ruckdeschel. Dedication As the class of ’49 joins the ranks of alumni, it will take with it many memories. Some of its brighter memories will be those of the ceaseless efforts John A. Ruckdeschel rendered in its behalf. Disregarding the obstacles and responsibilities of the task, he assumed the role of adviser. His wisdom and foresight made the '49 edition of the Rock possible. I have a plan is more than an expression with Mr. Schel.” His students and friends will bear witness to that. The Ruckdeschel Legend deserves a permanent place in the annals of East Rockaway. In a humble effort to express its gratitude, the class of 1949 proudly dedicates its most treasured possession—the Rock for '49—to Mr. John A. Ruckdeschel. 5 Foreword Since the time that we were Freshmen, we have seen many yearbooks come and go, always awaiting the memorable occasion when we as Seniors would have one of our own. Although we have worked long and hard on this final chapter of our high school careers, we know that our yearbook will be well worth the effort. Because our high school lives have been full of mischief and fun we feel that our theme, Under the Big Top, is fitting and proper. 6 ADMINISTRATION I Left to right: Dr. H. Stud well, Mr. E. Smith, Dr. A Scimeca, Mr. H. Sherman Mr. R. Rape. Mr. H. Gess ner, Mr. H. Proctor, Mr. N Mott. Parent -T eacher Association Board of Education One of the organizations of the school that deserves our congratulations and thanks is the Parent-Teacher Association. Under the able direction of Mrs. C. Wheeler Laue, the president, the P.T.A. tries to create understanding between parents and teachers and also to benefit the students of the school. Two of their commendable activities are the annual scholarship presented to a worthy Senior at graduation, and the Christmas program where anyone and everyone may see and hear the music department present beautiful Christmas music. Governing the affairs and policies of the East Rockaway School district is the Board of Education. Mr. Robert C. Pape and the other members of the Board have given freely of their time to help us with our problems and to improve our school. To them and Dr. Harold F. Studwell we owe our efficient administration, our excellent teaching staff, and our friendly atmosphere. Left to right. Seated: Mr. L. Rothston, Mr. M. D. Sack-man, Mrs. C. W. Laue, Mrs. H. Hunting, Mrs. R. Reese. Standing: Mrs. H. Sherman, Mrs. B. Nolan, Mrs. A. Dur-so, Dr. H. Bormann, Mrs. R. Barker, Mrs. O. V. Gerth. 7 English Department Left to right: Mrs. A. Reilly, Miss A. Hickman, Mr. L. H. Kirsch, Miss M. Lorenz, Mr. M. D. Sackman. When did Rome fall? What was the early name for East Rockaway? What are the principal products of Lower Slobovia? If you don’t know, consult the Social Studies Department. They try to teach us a little about the thousand-ring circus that is our world. Mrs. Elizabeth Yetter, Miss Gertrude Decker and Mr. William Berg comprise the staff of this section, one of the largest groups in the school. As the result of the instruction of these teachers we have learned everything from nouns to the faults of Macbeth's character; from Evangeline’s plight to the proper use of lay and lie. Mrs. Reilly’s dry sense of humor, Miss Lorenz’s informal style, Mr. Sack-man’s volatile temperament, Mr. Kirsch’s stratospheric style and Miss Hickman’s friendly attitude help to add variety to our classes and make school a pleasure. 8 Social Studies Department Left to right: Mr. W. Berg, Mrs. E. Yetter, Miss G. Decker. Mathematics Department Left to right: Miss G. Olson, Miss E. M. Goodwin, Miss G. Decker, Mr. A. S. Tutun-jian. Shh! Genius at work, Q0H22O11 + H20 plus a mysterious herb gives an inky colored brew.” No, that isn't the secret formula for making a powerful acid. That is just Herm” making coffee for the school nurse, Mrs. Lally and the biologist, 7th and 8th grade science teacher, Mr. Aschoff. It is through the efforts of these people that our health is guarded and our knowledge of science is stimulated and increased. Proving 2 equals 1 doesn't seem too difficult after all. King Tut” seems to be having little trouble with the three sceptics, Miss Gladys Olson, Miss Emily Mary Goodwin, and Miss Gertrude Decker. This year the math department has had three new additions in the persons of Miss Decker, Miss Goodwin and King Tut.” Due to its two-fold tongue-twisting tone the name Mr. Albert Souirou Tutunjian has been slightly modified to simply King Tut or Mr. T.” With such capable additions and the continued excellent work of Miss Gladys Olson, the math department should prove one of the best in the school. Science Department Left to right: Mr. E. Aschoff, Mr. R. Hermanson, Mrs. M. Lally. Arts Department Left to right. Seated: Mr. J. Ruckdeschel, Mrs. M. Nelson, Mrs. I. Shimans. Standing: Mr. H. Fordham, Mr. A. Tutunjian. In this ring we have those three famous tantalizing tongue-twisters, Spanish, French and Latin. Under the expert tutelage of Mrs. Dorothy Meske and Mrs. Lillian Clark, the language students have become very proficient. Classes under these teachers are never dull and the romance languages are always interestingly taught. Language Department 10 Left to right: Mrs. L. Clark, Mrs. D. Meske. When the big show comes to town each September, the arts department's chores begin. Mrs. Ida Shimans takes care of our posters and advertising art; Mrs. Marjorie Nelson supervises costumes and foods; Mr. Henry Fordham leads our circus band; and Mr. Albert Tutunjian and Mrs. John Ruckdeschel keep the shop in operation. Physical Education Department Left to right: Mr. N. Judd, Miss E. McCord. Introducing the Physical Education Department whose job it is to train the acrobats, tumblers, and dancers of our big show. Miss Eileen McCord teaches the girls to trip the light fantastic while Mr. Nevin Judd accomplishes the difficult feat of tutoring the tumblers in the fundamentals of their art. Together they are responsible for the top physical condition of all our performers. Our business department, under the direction of Mrs. Isabel Hefele and Mr. Charles Halford is one of the best equipped departments of the school. Offered courses from shorthand, typing and transcription through business training, business arithmetic and business law, the students who complete this field of study are prepared to meet any and all business problems. Mr. Halford is also the head of our extensive guidance department which contributes greatly in helping a student choose his vocation. Business Department Left to right: Mrs. I. Hefele, Mr. C. Halford. Left to right: Dr. H. Bor-mann, Mrs. M. Lee. Left to right: Miss C. Schempp, Dr. H. Studwell. Custodians These familiar fellows may easily be classified as the Roustabouts of our Big Top. It is their job to see that the school is run easily and efficiently. Always willing to lend a helping hand, they can usually be found opening someone's locker, repairing the mimeograph machine, and setting up assembly chairs, or doing the million odd jobs that are required to keep our school running smoothly. Office Staff Largely responsible for the friendly atmosphere and smooth-running efficiency of our three-ring circus is the office staff. Always cooperative, always ready to help, the staff handles all financial matters, makes out passes for late-comers, and performs all the countless necessary little tasks which keep a school going. This efficient group consists of: Dr. Bormann and Mrs. Lee; Dr. Studwell and Miss Schempp. Left to right: Mr. A. Wyatt, Mr. A. Schultz, Mr. F. Schlottman, Mr. C. Muller. It was a perfect setting for the annual Junior Prom. All over East Rockaway handsome young gentlemen in summer tuxedos escorted lovely young ladies in formal gowns to the gymnasium. The Stardust Prom” had begun. Few will forget the refreshments, the music or the dancing. Whether it was the high cost, the dancing, the unique decorations or the good-night kiss, it was a Prom to be remembered. T. Eager. J. Hayes. Pinafore” November fourth this year was a very important date, for it saw the arrival of a famous English ship, namely the H.M.S. Pinafore, with Captain Corcoran and his entire crew on board, along with Sir Joseph Porter, K.C.B. and his sisters, cousins and aunts. From the comical ditties of Sir Joseph to the romantic ballads of Josephine and Ralph Rackstraw, the show was a sure success. After an equally enjoyable performance the following night, the Pinafore set sail and regally departed, leaving a warm glow of satisfaction throughout East Rockaway. Left to right: N. Withrow, D. Although few realized it, the audience were witnessing a small miracle. Very few times did the whole cast show up for rehearsal. The inconveniences at rehearsals were numerous: inadequate heating, poor lighting and Alvin Cooke. Poor Alvin, he never did get his lines for the third act completely memorized and his uncontrollable laughter always spread to the rest of the cast. But after all that trouble, the play went on successfully and is said to be the best senior play East Rockaway has ever seen. Left to right: M. L. Martenhoff, J. Perry, B. Roberts, J. Hayes. Parents’ Night This year for the first time the annual high school Parents' Night was held in the gymnasium where the teachers sat at individual conference tables ready to discuss any and all problems brought to them by perplexed parents. Attendance was large and a pleasing atmosphere of informality prevailed. Here are your child’s records. May I introduce Library Club Student-Faculty Tea A new feature in the high school this year, the faculty tea, held during book week, proved a great success. All the members of the faculty were invited for a social get-together and to examine the library’s recent acquisitions of books. Several new teachers were also introduced and refreshments were served by volunteers from the Senior High Library Club. As you can see by these pictures, everyone had a good time and thoroughly enjoyed himself. Left to right: A. Tutunjian, M. D. Sackman, E. Dridge, I. Hefele, M. Lorenz. Left to right: Standing: I. Graduation Graduation—that magical word spoken only in whispers formerly, now presents itself to us almost before we realize it. It seems like only yesterday that we were in the seventh grade and looked up to those wonderful seniors. Now as seniors we look forward, though not eagerly, to the night in June when we formally bid adieu to the faculty, to our school and to our friends. I got it, Mom! Ladies and gentlemen . . . MARCH 25, 1949 I heard the words I never thought I'd hear, A sickening feeling overcame me. The Juniors had won; they let out a cheer The night the Seniors lost Rock Rivalry. I sensed a moan, one of utter despair That seemed to say, It's not true. It can't be. I left. I wanted to get out of there The night the Seniors lost Rock Rivalry. We had worked so hard, and we hadn’t won. Our girls were crying hysterically. The boys were silent, you know, sort of numb The night the Seniors lost Rock Rivalry. It’s like a dream, distant yet not quite gone. I still can't believe it. Yet tragically Enough it happened to us. Then the girls wept on The night the Seniors lost Rock Rivalry. Our disappointment will never leave. The hurt will remain, unfortunately. We'll never forget; we’ll always grieve For the night the Seniors lost Rock Rivalry. John Woodyard, '49 Rock Once a year the quiet serenity of East Rockaway High School is rudely shattered by that beloved annual institution, Rock Rivalry. Class turns against class, brother against brother, in a fiery fight to the finish. To an outsider it might seem fairly ferocious, but we know it is all in fun; don’t we? The four upper classes work feverishly for weeks ahead preparing for the stiff competition in posters, Rivalry murals, basketball, songs, cheers, and, of course, entrances. Tension mounts to an unbearable pitch as the great day comes. Posters and murals are judged in the afternoon; entrances, cheering, songs, etc., at night. Finally after the entrances the judges retire to compile the results while the milling crowd anxiously awaits the decision. It comes; the crowd goes wild; and the year’s greatest event is over. With the aid of its newly elected advisers, Mr. William Berg and Miss Gladys Olson, the Council has established its young subsidiary, the Student Service Squad, firmly in school affairs. An extremely successful Bundle Day Drive was conducted in the school system under the auspices of the Council and the Save the Children Foundation. This year, the Council has inaugurated a new policy of informal, irregular, open meetings with the object of obtaining more action with less talk. The members are chosen for their character, scholarship, leadership, and service. To these ceremonies come members of other chapters at various Long Island schools. Several times this year the local chapter has traveled to these other schools to witness their inductions and get new ideas for ours. Math Honor Society The Math Honor Society was formed to foster an interest in higher math and to honor those who are proficient. Once a year these members take an examination for a special scholarship given by the national chapter. This society, because of its difficult requirements, is responsible for the high grades in the Math Department. Left to right: Kneeling: B. Meske, N. Sherman, B. Gam-bee, E. Murray, D. Sanders, J. The activities of the year were the annual Sadie Hawkins' Dance, and the impressive inductions in the spring. With Mrs. Dorothy Meske as adviser the officers are: President, Joan Southard; Vice-President, Joan Kinnier; Secretary, Miriam Krassner; Treasurer, Rose Policastro. Rho Gamma, the girls’ honorary athletic society, has kept quite busy during the year. The Pep Rally and Dance, held the night before the first football game in the fall, and also the Student-Faculty Volleyball Game where our dignified teachers bound around the court in gym shorts and sneakers are highlights of the Rho Gamma year. DEBATING SOCIETY Newly formed this year, the Debating Society has already attracted an ardent group of young speakers. The club was originally begun as a branch of the history classes, but its scope has expanded to deal with foreign affairs, education and school problems. Directed by Mr. William Berg, its faculty adviser, the club's weekly Friday afternoon meetings have become fiery battlegrounds where Pros and Cons conduct their verbal battles. Their provocative topics have included: Should the responsibilities of marriage and family life be taught in the schools? Is the Jewish claim to Palestine valid?,” and Should high school students be allowed to smoke in school?” The club has also sponsored candidates for the American Legion and Elks Club Oratorical Contests and has sent groups of debaters to the High School Parent-Teacher Association and the Lynbrook Rotary Club to speak. Each week the club selects a topic and a chairman for the next week with the faculty adviser as permanent judge of these debates. Left to right: First Row, seated: J. Setteie, B. Kaers, J. McHarg, B. Our band is undoubtedly one of the best loved parts of our school life. In most of the year's activities it plays an important part. Aided by the expert coaching of Miss Eileen McCord, both the class and honor teams enjoyed an undefeated season in contest with other Nassau schools. We hope that future hockey teams will maintain this enviable record. Badminton is a sport just introduced in East Rockaway this year by Miss Emily Mary Goodwin who acted as faculty adviser. Baseball Track The 1948 baseball team, though they had their ups and downs, showed themselves capable of playing some great ball. Tom Craig's last two-hitter and Richard Lehr's game-winning homer together with Ronald Hoppner's spotless fielding and Sal Trupo's base knocks provided many thrills. With nine veterans returning to action this spring, the chance of a successful season for Coach Douglas Sackman's charges seems better than average. Handicapped by the lack of a track on which to practice, the varsity track and field men under the guidance of Mr. William Berg, made an impressive showing in their dual meets and in the Class B championships. The boys garnered their share of points and only lack of depth in several events kept the team out of the win column. Left to right: Kneeling: A. Breyer, D. Reid, R. Freyer, E. Goldman, J. Vette, E. Bolton, E. Smith, H. Kelty, J. Jackson. Standing: Mr. W. Berg, W. Masterson, J. Calvert, R. Seymour, C. Williams, J. O'Neill, D. Wilke, P. Hoffman, D. Jacobson. B. Davies, W. Spencer, G. Acknowledgment We, the Senior Class, wish to extend our deepest and most sincere thanks to those who have made our yearbook a success. To Mr. Douglas Sackman, our literary adviser, who sacrificed innumerable lunch hours to the cause, to Mr. John Ruckdeschel, business adviser, and Miss Gladys Olson, assistant business adviser in charge of advertisements, who together enabled us to pay for our yearbook, we can only say, Our gratitude is immeasurable and our thanks never ending.” Thanks also go to Mr. Albert S.
