DEDICATION When our class was called together to decide to whom we would dedicate our yearbook, it was no difficult decision. No one has given so much of his time, effort, and knowledge to East Rockaway High School's students as Mr. Henry Fordham. He has not given special attention to any particular group, but Mr. Fordham's touch has been seen in community, church, and school events. Many of us performed on these occasions in the chorus or band. The Operetta, Christmas Program, Spring Festival, Variety Show and other musical programs bring back to us recollections of hard work, gay rehearsals, and of the one man to whom we owe more than we can ever repay. East Rockaway High School has come to be known throughout the state because of Mr. Fordham's achievements in music. His much-needed guidance was generously given to us, and now we, the Class of 1948, as a last gesture, wish to dedicate our yearbook to the man who will always make our memories of schooldays happy ones. Thank you, Mr. Fordham. 5 FOREWORD There’s A Song In The Air” From our first days at East Rockaway High, we have eagerly looked forward to the time when me might publish a yearbook, to be in later years a reminder of school days long past. This is the finale. Within these covers we have recorded our many days of happiness and also our plans for the future. Music has been entwined throughout our school life, so, as Seniors, we have decided to present a record of the part we and music have played in our school life. We hope that our ROCK will bring to others the pleasant memories we have shared during our four years of high school. 6 ADMINISTRATION Left to Right: Dr. H. F. Studwell, Mr. E. Smith, Dr. A. Scimeca, Mr. R. Pape, Mr. H. Sherman, Mr. H. Gessner, Mr. H. Proctor, Mr. N. Mott. PARENT-TEACHER ASSOCIATION One of the most active and vital organizations of the school is the P. T. A. It acquaints the parents with members of the faculty and the activities of the school. It also does many worthwhile things for the students, such as the granting of a scholarship in June to a member of the graduating class. Officers of the organization are: Mrs. C. W. Laue, president; Mr. H. W. Clark and Mrs. H. Bunting, vice-presidents; Mr. G. Meske, treasurer; Mrs. W. Hamsley and Mr. M. Sackman, secretaries; and Mrs. H. Sherman, financial secretary. It's Up To You BOARD OF EDUCATION These men of the community, who have given up their time so willingly, were elected to their positions because of their competence. They approve our texts and formulate the policies by which Dr. Studwell directs our schools. Under the leadership of Mr. Pape, the board struggles with the many problems that confront our school system in these turbulent times. Let’s Get Together” Seated: Mrs. W. Hamsley, Mr. G. Schuler, Mrs. A. Pallokat, Mr. H. W. Clark, Mrs. C. Laue, Mr. G. Meske, Mrs. H. Bunting, Mr. M. Sackman. Standing. Dr. H. Bormann, Mrs. W. Kinnier, Mrs. B. Nolan, Dr. H. Studwell, Mrs. H. Sherman, Mrs. O. V. Gerth, Mrs. A. Durso, Mrs. R. Barker. ENGLISH DEPARTMENT Me, Myself and I” Seated: Mr. M. Sackman, Miss A. Hickman. Standing: Miss M. Lorens, Mrs. M. Howard, Mrs. A. Reilly. From Ivanhoe to Macbeth, from gerunds to hyperboles, our English teachers have brought us safely through the wilderness of literature and grammar that confronted us all. Without the help of these tireless teachers, we could have never understood and enjoyed the finer points of literature, and some of us can actually write a non-run-on sentence now. Here are the capable instructors of our future civic leaders. We cannot put into words the debt we owe these teachers, as studying the historic past and turbulent present of our country and of the world in which we live will better prepare us to understand the future that will be our problem, as the past has been that of preceding generations. SOCIAL STUDIES’ DEPARTMENT America.” Left to Right: Mrs. E. Yetter, Mrs. E. Joy, Miss M. Lorenz. ARTS’ DEPARTMENT Remember When Seated: Mrs. M. Nelson, Mrs. J. Noonan, Miss M. Failing. Standing: Mr. H. Fordham, Mr. J. Ruck-deschel. These digit-jugglers direct one of the most important courses in school, starting under the wing of Mrs. Symonds in Junior High and continuing up the scale to Mrs. Joy and finally to Miss Olson. We wish to extend our appreciation to these teachers who have trained us so well that some day we may be able to figure out our income tax. Will we ever forget the thrill of having a picture hung for exhibition; of blowing the first few notes,on a clarinet; of seeing Dad proudly show off our first book ends; of seeing Mom’s incredulous look as she tasted our pie crust? No, we’ll never forget. Our unlimited thanks go to the teachers who helped us achieve those successes. Mrs. Nelson, Mrs. Noonan, Miss Failing, Mr. Fordham and Mr. Ruckdeschel. MATHEMATICS’ DEPARTMENT I’ve Got Your Number” Left to Right: Mrs. J. Symonds, Miss G. Olson, Mrs. E. Joy. PHYSICAL EDUCATION DEPARTMENT Rugged But Right” Left to Right. Miss E. McCord, Mr. N. Judd, Miss J. Davis. High on the scale of any school is its athletic department. This department is well taken care of by Miss Davis in the grade schools, and Mr. Judd and Miss McCord in the boys’ and girls’ sports respectively. The latter two select the varsity and honor teams and successfully guide them to victory. BUSINESS DEPARTMENT Patience and Fortitude” The Business Department is under the efficient guidance of Mr. Halford and Mrs. Hefele. These two teachers have helped us better ourselves for our future years by teaching us shorthand, typing and business training. Mr. Halford has also been a great help to us in the guidance department. We shall never forget the tireless effort that they have given us. LANGUAGE DEPARTMENT You Don’t Hare to Know the Language” Spanish, french, and Latin are the three languages that E. R. H. S. offers students. The masters of these languages. Miss Lillian Tobin and Mrs. Dorothy Meske, do much to make the romance languages interesting by providing classes and club meetings with much laughter, along with hard work. No! That's not the “Mad Scientist” and his two merry assistants. It’s Mr. Hermanson, better known as Herm, East Rockaway’s physics-chemistry teacher. Miss Myers, the school nurse, and Mr. Aschoff, the school biologist. This threesome make up our Science Department and can answer questions involving anything from halitosis to malatosis. SCIENCE DEPARTMENT It Ain’t Necessarily So’’ Left to Right: Mr. E. Aschoff, Mr. R. Hermanson, Miss D. Mvers. i a mu man Left to Right: Mrs. M. Lee, Dr. H. Bormann. OFFICE STAFF Nobody Knows the Trouble I’ve Seen We rate a high score for our indispensable duo. Dr. Bor-mann and Mrs. Lee. Without their guidance we would have floundered bewilderedly up the scale of our high school career. They’ve made us mind our sharps and flats, directed our faltering feet, and worried over us constantly. We strike the highest chord in our gratitude, appreciation, and thanks to these two friends. Left to Right: Dr. H. Studwcll, Miss C. Schempp. Through Dr. Studwell’s and Miss Schempp's hard work and tireless efforts, we have finally reached the top of the scale, Graduation. No one can look back on East Rockaway without thinking of our Superintendent and his humorous stories, or his efficient secretary and her unequaled school spirit. They have truly formed the G cleff of our scale. SCHOOL CUSTODIANS Keep Smiling at Trouble” As the school day ends, the real work of this staff begins. They force the heat up early in the morning, patch up the broken windows, open lockers, and clean up the overflow from packed lockers and desks. Their job starts when the sun comes up and isn’t finished ’till long after sunset. We don't know how we’d ever get along without them. 12 Left to Right Mr. A. Schultz, Mr. F. Schlottman, Mr. C. The band, chorus ,and soloists join talent and present to an appreciative audience a pro gram that starts the holiday season in the true Christmas spirit. CHORUS With a Song in My Heart” Mr. Fordham should receive top honors for creating and cultivating our very successful High School Chorus. ROCK What the hamburger is to the United States, Rock Rivalry is to East Rockaway High. Both are necessary institutions, and without them a certain something would be lacking. Since 1937, when it was established by Miss Grace Rudiger, a former girls' gym instructor, Rock Rivalry has been a functioning extracurricular activity. At first Rock Rivalry was mainly an athletic competion between classes, and basketball games were played Rock Rivalry night. Since then the Entrance has been lengthened from the original ten minutes to the present thirty minutes. Rock Rivalry 1948 was a gala occasion. We visited the gay and glorious “Mardi Gras” of New Orleans as From the tables down at Gusmo’s There's good news tonight Schmoehopper U. Come to the Mardi Gras Midnight Masquerade RIVALRY presented by the Frosh, frolicked on the campus of the Sophomores' “College Days,” promenaded along the Champs Elysees accompanied by a dazzling mademoiselle of the Juniors’ “Gay Paris,” and travelled “South of the Border” with the Seniors, where we took our midday siesta and wooed the senoritas in the cool of the evening. Since the mid-term, the respective Rock Rivalry committees worked tirelessly to bring success and glory to their classes. Those behind the scenes: the literary genii who prepared the entrances; the class artists who painted the murals and posters; the industrial arts' boys who constructed the refreshment stands, and the musicians of the class who composed the class songs, were necessary parts in the extravaganza we know as Rock Rivalry. “An American in Paris Last Time I Saw Paris “Oo-la-la! My Hero” La Habanera SOUTH OF Setting: Evening in the plaza of San Juanito. A young American arrives in the little Mexican village of San Juanito with his Brazilian companion, Poncho. While they are relaxing, they hear the beautiful melody of the “La Habanera.” The American is immediately captivated by the lovely senorita, seen in the doorway of her hacienda. At the conclusion of her song, she throws a rose at his feet and disappears. He then confesses his desire to meet her again. This prospect is not at all pleasing to Poncho, who is a confirmed woman-hater. Poncho tries to discourage the American by telling him of the follies of love, and complains that he does not know the language. The American replies with, You Don’t Have to Know the Language. He persuades Poncho to arrange a rendezvous with the senorita at the fiesta. As the oppressive heat of the long day subsides, the village arises to the occasion of the fiesta. The American and his amigo arrive and enter into a conversation with some of the village gentry. They tell of other lovers who Jarabe Tapatio” Hi, Mr. Bull “S-E-N-l-O-R-S 46 THE BORDER have tried in vain to win the fair senorita. They contribute this to an old woman who acts as the girl’s chaperon. A villager further elaborates on the old one with a burlesque sketch to the tune of the “Old Chaperon.” The merriment abruptly ceases on the arrival of the fair senorita and her chaperon. The silence is broken when the orchestra strikes up with “The Toreador Song.” This is the signal to begin the traditional bull fight. The bull fight is then portrayed by a dancing matador. The American then calls Poncho aside and persuades him to make a play for the old chaperon. Poncho reluctantly agrees. He tells a sad story of a dejected lover from Brazil through the song “The Gay Caballero. The russe works and Poncho finds himself beseiged by the old chaperon. Next there follows a dance to the strains of “Jealousy,” during which the two couples retire to obscure comers. At the conclusion of the dance, the crowds gather around the two couples who have plighted their troth. The entire ensemble sings, “The Serenade of the Bells.” South of the Border “Toreador” 47 The Old Chaperone First Row N. Pendas. D. O'Brien. B. Bolton, J. Wtine, T. Eager, J. Kinniex. Second Rou D. LIBRARY CLUBS The Little Book Shop” Here we have our “book worms in the school. They assist Miss Hickman in the library with her various duties, but that's not all they do. Did you see the library decora' tions at Christmas and during Book Week? Yep, that was also some of our “book worms' work, as was the interesting program they put on for the P.T.A. But all is not work. They also have parties and other fun during the year. These two active clubs keep the library running smoothly under Miss Hickman's direction. Well, if you ever see Julie Isaksen, our editor' in'chief, with a bat in her hand, she isn’t going to play base-ball. She’s just hounding the reporters to get their assign' ments in before the deadline. Then you come to the typing room. Well, A1 Jolson may have his make-up, but we have our mimeograph machine! You see Joan Hiscock, the assistant editor, and Terry Op-laden with their hands and faces covered with ink. MATH HONOR SOCIETY SECRETARIAL CLUB One-sy, Two-sy” Vm Gonna Write Myself a Letter” Organized to honor those students proficient in mathematics, this society has evolved into a working club, whose chief aim is to foster an interest in higher math. The so-ciety, because of its high entrance requirements, is largely responsible for the honor grades received in the math de-partment. The officers are: Tom Craig, president; Ronald White, vice-president; Janet Laue, secretary; and Jane Hatt, treasurer. Busily acquiring skills as future secretaries, these members of the Secretarial Club strive for perfection in their work. But there are many diversions, too, such as trips to the city to visit various business institutions, and mere pleasure jaunts with Mrs. Hefele, “maestro” of this industrious club. FOOTLIGHTERS Make Believe” This newly-formed organization consists of those students interested in the dramatic arts. With the able assistance of Mrs. Howard, the members have planned inter-school plays, assembly programs, and plays for their own amusement. ROCK BUSINESS AND TYPING STAFFS Money is the Root of All Evil ROCK ART AND LITERARY STAFFS Among My Souvenirs” Thanks are due to the members of the business staff, who had the “get'up'and'go and Miss Olson's driving spirit to get the funds necessary for the ROCK to become a reality. Ed Manuel and Andy Breyer, business managers, rate a round of applause, too. The typing staff, headed by Ruth Seely, has done more than its share of the work in publishing this yearbook also. We will never forget the time and effort they have put forth towards making the ROCK of 1948 a success. Many were the lunch hours that these stalwart youths of the Art and Literary Staffs missed as they struggled vali' antly to create our masterpiece, the ROCK of '48. No two staffs ever needed so much teamwork before. They were fortunate to have two such capable and patient advisors as Mrs. Jane Noonan and Miss Martha Lorenz. Seated: R. Griemsmann. S. Wood. L. It has also carried on charity drives and has taken care of the lunchroom squad. Officers are: Jim Hayes, president; Nancy Pendas, vice-president; Norma Worth, secretary; and Lyn Murray, treasurer. LUNCHROOM SQUAD A Cup of Coffee, A Sandwich, and You” This valiant group, headed by Lester Moody and his capable cohorts, tries to maintain peace and order in the lunchroom. It is their job to see that the students keep their lunchroom clean, which they have done com-mendably. HALL AND TRAFFIC SQUAD Take It Easy” These sturdy men are the preservers of peace and order in the halls between periods, and after school you may hear their famous phrase, “Walk your bikes. CHEERLEADERS ,Salute to the Fighting Forces” Under the able coaching of co-captains Rose Policastro and Larraine O’Connor, this year’s J. Overlooking the scrapes and bumps, the girls carry the ball, foot by foot, down the field to the goal. Remembering their victories and, of course, a few defeats, the girls will never regret how they practiced corners, dribbling and driving until they achieved mas tery of the sport. 58 Standing: J. VOLLEYBALL Get Out and Get Under” ARCHERY Robin Hood” If you want a stiff neck, just go to any volleyball practice and your wants will be fulfilled! As you watch the ball go back and forth, you will surely have a prize kink! These girls, who faithfully attended the practices and were singled out as the best players, made the volleyball honor team. 60 It isn’t an Indian massacre you see on East Rockaway's grounds. It's the East Rockaway “Pocahontases eagerly hoping that their arrows will hit the target, or maybe even a bull’s eye. The older students, by virtue of previous experience, keep away from the novices, but the girls have their brave young fans who kibitz from the sidelines and retrieve arrows. TABLE TENNIS High, Low and Wide” Wham! That’s the sound of the paddle returning one of those lightning serves that the girls on our table tennis team can handle so well. Those watching this seemingly simple sport realize that it requires judgment, as well as skilled action, to achieve perfection. GIRLS’ BOWLING Sally in Our Alley” A crash of pins and another strike constitutes the usual success of our girls’ bowling team. This favorite sport has been growing in popularity, for coordination, grace and bah ance are all results of bowling. TRACK RIDING Smoke Gets in Your Eyes” The Old Gray Mare” The Rocks in this picture, last season’s squad, didn’t fare too well as a team but had several outstanding cindermen. The team was led by ''Lambie Goldman, pole vaulter, and George Faulkner, captain of the squad. Coach Martin Sackman has most of the team returning this year. Among them are Bill Spencer, Bill Schroeder, Bill Masterson, Carlton Treacy and George Faulkner. May they have a successful season. Once every week during the spring and fall Miss McCord corrals a pack of well-groomed equestrians into a truck that brings them to the Biltmore Stables. At the beginning of every new year, the fresh group of riders are thoroughly frightened by veterans’ tales of untamed pintos. Yet they all go on during the year to the horse show to ride their best. The winners this year were: Advanced group: Betty Gambee, Jean Thompson, and Janet Laue; Intermediate group: Pat Leinker, Nancy Edwards, and Joan Bantzhoff; Beginners' group: Dorothy Perry, Judith Lerner, and Marie Schaefer. BASEBALL Take Me Out to the Ball Game From the standpoint of record, the national pastime is East Rockaway’s most accomplished sport. The baseball team, with its rhythm and teamwork, wins more games than the other teams combined. Working together, the fellows hit the keynote of victory. GIRLS’ SOFTBALL Welcome, Sweet Springtime” Not only is the sight of robins a sign of spring, but the sight of lively girls playing soft ball is also a sure indication. When the honor team is finally picked, there are many joyful hearts among those who have worked hard all season.
