THE ROCK FOR ‘45 AIR AGE EDITION THE OFFICIAL PUBLICATION OF EAST ROCKAWAY HIGH SCHOOL EAST ROCKAWAY. NEW YORK 3 ♦ FOREWORD Gazing into the cumulous clouds, we see a formation of airliners winging their way across the slcy. While we watch them, we too. wonder what lies ahead. As they disappear into the white billows of heaven, our hearts become nostalgic. As the early days of our flight training pass before our eyes in a kaleidoscopic pattern, we recall those colorful days in school. We never realized that it would be such fun to learn. Before we leave our home field, to start on fliahts of our own. we realize that this is the lost time we shall work together as a crew. The merry times we have had training together, the sincere friendships which have been established, and the skilled performances of our instructors, will hold a permanent place in our hearts. 5 Agnes G. Hickman DEDICATION Four year ago. a we hejan our flight training with uncertain and faltering tep . we were greeted Hv a kind and capable instructor. We will never l e able to determine tbe extent of our debt to Mi Hickman, for bow can we measure year of untiring and unselfish service? Witb a firm band she bas ably guided us tbrougb tbe troubled skies of our studies Whenever we bad reason to u e tbe library, we saw Miss Hickman presiding witb a self-effacing modesty over her domain of literature. By her unceasing efforts and dynamic energy, she bas created a modern and efficiently manager! library. Every air-cadet enter it witb confidence; be knows be will find tbe object of bis search, whether it l e a book, or merely some assistance in tbe performance of a difficult assignment. Tbe vibrant personality of our flight instructor bas made it tbe most pleasant spot on tbe entire training field. But Miss I lit kman’s interests have not been confined only to tbe tomes which she knows and understands so well. She is an inveterate traveller; her charm and cos mopolitan savoire faire have won her friends in many distant parts of tbe world Todav. however, when war makes travel impossible, she maintains a correspond ence with many Americans abroad who. unfortunately, did not go as tourists. Her letters are awaited with eager anticipation, for they remind tbe soldier of tbe home and friends be left behind. And so. as we follow in tbe wake of tbe air-cadets who have already completed tbe training for tbe long flight tbrougb life, we dedicate ibis volume to Miss Hickman with tbe deepest sense of gratitude and respect. Ye realize it is little to do for one who has helped us so much. But we offer ibis gesture ns proof that we will never forget tbe magnanimous assistance which she freely rendered toward u . and that we will alwavs cherish tbe memorv of her salient personality.
