) THE ROCK FOR. 19 4 4 THE PLAYHOUSE EDITION THE OFFICIAL PUBLICATION OF EAST ROCKAWAY HIGH SCHOOL « FOREWORD As the lights in the playhouse grow dimmer, the senior class of 1944 presents to you, our audience, a dramatic production entitled “Reflections on a Day in East Rockaway.” The leading characters are portrayed by the senior class. The incidents in the play are the highlights of our school life and are among the cherished memories which will remain with us always. J DIRECTOR CAST PROLOGUE ACT I—DAWN ACT II—NOON ACT III—DUSK SETTING—EAST ROCKAWAY CURTAIN CALLS MARY K. O'DONNELL DEDICATION For the first time we find Mrs. 0 Donnell not behind the scenes but behind the footlights. There are so many things for which she deserves applause. All of us who worked under her in our senior play, June Mad, appreciate not only her great extent of dramatic ability but also her inexhaustible patience which is so necessary to a capable director. Never shall we forget the skilful manner in which she instructed our lively and informal F.nglish classes. We shall always value highly the knowledge we’ve gained through her. Our recollections of the days when Mrs. O’Donnell read aloud to us will be among our most pleasant memories. We still chuckle at her humorous interpretations of Negro and Italian dialects in addition to her forte, an imitation of an Irish colleen. Now as graduation draws near, it brings down the curtain separating a memorable high school past from our indefinite future. Resides having the squad fortified with ten lettermen. we had Joe Andrews as an additional threat to opposing teams. There was never a dull moment at the Garden City game. “Dink Thornlow made a spectacular seventy-five yard run. and then the team really came to life! Rarky Roes’ touchdown from a pass, Tom Doherty’s runback blocked kick—all helped release our pent-up excitement, and the bleachers rocked with our cheering at the tie score. I he toughest game was played against Seton Hall. W alt” Craig's super blocking of kicks and “Stoogie Dolan's fine quarterbacking enabled us to keep the score at a 0 to 0 tie. The successful season ended with a spirited rally, and we all agree that watching our team play was an experience to be remembered. BASKETBALL Our basketball season was a dramatic one from start to finish. We had our share of victories in spite of many star players leaving for the service. The fighting spirit of the team was matched by the enthusiasm of our peppy cheerleaders and fervent fans. “Dink Thornlow's last game at Garden City was a dynamic one. He saved the day by sinking a set shot from the middle of the court. One of the most memorable games was that played at Lynbrook. It was a very close one all the way through, but the efficient teamwork, topped by Tom Pupino's set shot, enabled us to achieve a victory. The team and spectators will never forget “Stoogie” Dolan’s half-court swishers. Akus Kennedy's pivots and “Chopper Byrne's accurate long throws. Although the basketball season seemed short, our’s certainly was an eventful one. TRACK SQUAD Row I: Petrv. Schneider. Scharfenberg. McClure. Riker. Hall, Murrav. Raccof. Row 2: Hnley. Dougherty. SENIOR PLAY The big night finally arrived! After several months of blinking across footlights and staring at empty seats, the cast of “June Mad” was ready. The Center Avenue Playhouse was all set for a capacity crowd. We were not disappointed. Everything went without a Haw. Local critics acclaimed the play a success, much to the delight of the members of the cast. They will never forget Jack Nutley’s crazy capers, Don Geis’s little black carrot case, Margie Cobb’s lisp, and Artie Barnett’s “making like’’ Sinatra. Jane Homer’s blushing embarrassment during love scenes offered much diversion to the front row critics. Yes. our play was a success due to the patient coaching of our director and friend. Mrs. O’Donnell, as well as to the cooperation of Miss Duffy and the members of the senior class. “June Mad” will always be a shining star in memory of the cast and all who made the play possible. VARIETY SHOW Under the supervision of Mr. Fordham, East Rockaway’s favorite music director, the cast of another annual Variety Show performed for an enthusiastic audience. The skillful combination of outstanding singing, dancing and instrumental talents of our school was as refreshing as March itself, the month in which the show was presented. The appropriate opening number featured the Chorus singing “Say It With Music.” Throughout the performance the dance band accompanied the various vocal and ballet selections. The humorous note was sounded by Bob Finley, the M. C. of the evening whose lively introductions were received with many laughs and chuckles. The typical American spirit of cooperation was essential to the successful staging of the Variety-Show. It was with this same spirit that the audience helped bring the evening to a rousing close by-singing Ferde Grofe's “Over There Fantasy.” RHO GAMMA Row 1: Rasmussen. Grosheim, Simonson. Peter.
