No school would operate effectively without an effi-
cient maintenance man. Mr. Joseph Polock's duties are
many and he does them all cheerfully. Mrs. Betty

FACULTY
Realizing that a varied as well as specific educa-
tion is needed, East Pittsburgh's teaching staff of
twenty faculty members contributed to the well-
rounded training of all students in the fundamentals
of both required and elective subjects.
For the balance between mental and physical
growth a varied physical education program is pro-
vided. The guidance counsellor performs a service
in planning for the college bound student.

Tammy Tell Me True
Irresistible Tammy Tyree, a shanty-boat girl, goes to
college and then delightful fireworks start. Young Profes-
sor Tom Freeman, charmed by her quaint way of talking
and her understanding of people, advises her about
courses. Pete Brent, her own true love, is surprised and
not too pleased at her arrival. Just when it looks as if
Tammy may not be allowed to stay at college, a new ac-
quaintance comes to the rescue. Miss Annie Call, a lonely
old woman dominated by a money-hungry niece, arrives
to live on the shanty boat with Tammy but insists that
her identity be kept a secret. Finally, Miss Annie is found
by the police, and Tammy is taken off to jail accused of
theft. At the hearing, it is Tom who clears her name and
makes things right again. Tammy, who has come to col-
lege to learn, realizes now that she has learned a new
understanding of true love.

Senior Class Officers
Commencement at last! The high powered seniors,
who only a few years back thought it was a far distant
goal, see the end in sight as June draws near. Through-
out our four years we have had many academic, ath-
letic and social activities to prepare for our future
life - be it college, career, or the home.
Even as freshmen, many of us realized the impor-
tance of a good education. However, we did not neg-
lect participation in sports and extra curricular clubs.
Under the supervision of Mrs. Gustason, we elected J.
Begey, president, W. Sepanskey, vice-president, P.
Nese, treasurer. We took part in the May Festival and
wisely chose Marie Tonet and Michael Mezick as our
court attendants. The first year was a rewarding year
for us all.
More exciting still was our sophomore year. Robert
Witkowski was elected president, Elmer Redinger, vice-
president, Johnetta Begey, secretary, and Arlene Yurko,
treasurer. As we socialized more and more, sopho-
mores became cheerleaders, maiorettes, twirlers while
others ioined the football and basketball squads, the
chorus and the band. Arlene Yurko and Robert Wit-
kowski represented our class at the May Festival. Per-
haps the biggest thrill of the year was receiving our
school rings.
As we started our iunior year, our class began to de-
crease in number to only 39 members. We carried on
our general procedure of electing officers. Robert Wit-
kowski remained as president, Michael Mezick, vice-
president, Elaine Rahaw, secretary, and Marie Tonet,
treasurer. Under the guidance of Mrs. Gustason, we
assumed the responsibilities of earning money by sell-
ing Christmas cards and sponsoring .a Junior Class
dance to take care of upcoming expenses. The big
event of the year was the Junior-Senior. Prom-atrthe
lonial Manor which was also the scene of our May
Crowning. Johnetta Begey and Robert Witkowski re-
presented our class as court attendants.
The distribution of senior pictures made us realize
at once that this was unquestionably our senior year -
our last. For the third year, Robert Witkowski was
elected to lead our class as president, Mike Mezick,
vice-president, Elaine Rahaw, secretary, and Johnetta
Begey, treasurer. To increase our treasury we sold
Christmas cards and held our Senior Dance. Each was
a success.
As we close our senior year and mentally review the
bright moments of the years spent at East Pittsburgh,
we know that the friendships and memories will be a
part of our lives as we go on to higher fields of edu-
cation and endeavor.

Looking ahead to upperclass status, printing and

ln October the Juniors had their first real oppor-

ior project was a Christmas card sale to finance the
Junior Prom. Under the direction of Miss Raynovich
and in cooperation with the Curtis Publishing Company,
the class reached its planned goal. The Prom committees

and each appearance was outstanding. A hearty

Crystal staff tells story of the year.
The members of this year's Crystal Staff spent many hours preparing the dummy,
scheduling and taking pictures, writing and editing copy, and reading proof for the
72 page account of the 1961-62 school year.
Editor Michael Mezick, assisted by Associate Editors, Betty Kondas and Sandra Cirota,
directed the staff members in compiling a vivid pictorial story of school lite.
To keep in step with the times, the staff and Mrs. Morgan, the adviser, chose to add
an additional color to place emphasis on several segments of the book.
We have aimed to present a complete portrayal of school life - classes, activities,
athletics, and the many unforgettable moments we shared together in 1962.

The nation-wide organization known as Junior
Achievement is composed of teenage business men and
women who manage miniature companies of their own
with the guidance of adult counselors drawn from lo-
cal business and industry.
Through Junior Achievement the students of our
high school grasp the principles and benefits of our
free enterprise system because they experience them
in their own company activities. This movement helps
to insure today's youth becoming tomorrow's responsible
and informed citizens.
The Turtle Creek Valley Chapter of Junior Achieve-
ment, which our students attend, is sponsored by the
Westinghouse Electric Corporation, where Mr. John
Coleman is the executive director.

Football's Final Season
East Pittsburgh Adopts Baseball
The same cheer Go Shamrocks Go! will resound above the
bleachers and echo from the quarry wall. The green and white clad
team will thrill to the roar from enthusiastic fans. However, Hit that
line will become Batter up as East Pittsburgh replaces football
with baseball this coming spring.
The East Pittsburgh Board of Education voted unanimously to drop
football as a major sport and to replace it with baseball. The action
taken by the Board of Education came as the result of careful study
and deliberation involving a number of reasons. Chief among them
was the increasing difficulty in scheduling games in the class to which
the school has been assigned. The school enrollment has been de-
creasing for a number of years and the B classification has made it
difficult to schedule and meet teams comparable in size on an enroll-
ment basis.
Football has been an exciting part of East Pittsburgh's school life
for thirty-six years - years filled with action, defeats, and champion-
ships. In 1925 Speedo Loughran ran the first team on to the field.
Slessinger was elected coach for the 1926-1927 season and
Coleman took over in 1929 and remained until 1945. The
Ernie
John
years 1932 through 1935 were very successful and in 1941 the Sham-
rocks

won the class B W.P.l.A.L. championship in Section 16. ln
under the guidance of Dom Rich, the Shamrocks were runners
squad from
up in the All Valley team. James Vitsas coached the
1945 until 1947 when Al Mihalco took over. ln 1952 the new Quarry
Dave Flood
Field was completed and the squad had a fine season.
assumed position of coach from 1954 to January, 1961. In 1961-62
Coach Mihalco led the Shamrocks again for their final season.
Even though the Board of Education found it expedient to drop
football as a maior sport, it has replaced that activity with spring
baseball. The local fans are eager to back their favorite team in this
new proiect.

Shamrocks face great football odds.
The football squad composed of thirty-five boys, ten of whom
were seniors, completed the 'l96l season with a record of one tie
and eight losses. The scores, however, do not tell all of the story.
Hours of training and practice, exhibitions of good sportsmanship
and fair play, exuberant backing .by loyal fans combined to pro-
duce a team that was a credit to the school.
Coaches Mihalco and Nese strove against great odds in orga-
nizing a going team from our school's low enrollment, facing
teams from larger schools, and meeting the dilticult task of schedu-
ling games with schools of comparable size. The season was a suc-
cess in the eyes of the school-spirited Shamrock boosters. Coach
Mihalco suggested, Maybe the ball iust bounced the wrong way.
