It has been truly saicl, "Of the
making of books there is no end."
Each year since the first issue of
this Annual, the Seniors have en-
deavored to give a more exact
and concise presentation of school
life. We have striven to excel in
this issue, and, in later years, hope
the perusal of this book will bring
only pleasant memories.

SENIOR HCNOR STUDENTS
It has been the custom in years past in East Palestine High School to pay
cial honor to those students Who, through their four years of High School life,
maintained a more than usual scholastic standing. A
This year we feel that it is a fact worth noting that, for the first time in a
ber of years, if not in the entire history of the High School, these honors for
scholarship are to be awarded, not to the fairer sex, but to three promising young

high
men.
The highest honor for the class of 1929 has been attained by Edson Horsfall, to
whom still greater commendation is due because of the fact that many other activities
necessarily claimed his time outside of the regular school curriculum.
This honor is one of the highest and most enviable that the High School confers
upon her students.
Albert Menke is the winner of second place. Albert has not only "made the grade,"
as we say, but has also contributed his time and efforts in improving and bettering
the school along various other lines.
To Jacob Trobec, also, honorable mention is due. Everybody knows Jacob
BSR
quiet, unassuming chap, but one who has the power of success in his very hands.
We wish especially to extend our best wishes for success to these, our honor
students, and trust that they may be led into bigger and broader fields of opportunity.

JUNIOR CLASS HISTORY
Two years and eight months ago we entered our Alma Mater as green Freshmen.
We soon learned the ways of the school, however, and managed to spend our time
in some profitable ways.
The next year we were Sophomores. VVe had by this time learned the tricks of
the trade and we found that by keeping on the good side ol our teachers we could
get fair grades. But even this year was more or less play to us and it soon passed by.
Now we are struggling through the third year of the course and trying to keep the
ideals of our class high. We have been successful in this so far and when we leave
our school we hope to be able to boast of a clean record.
During our three years we have furnished our share of members for the varsity
teams and have taken part in most of the school activities. -Glenn Ward.
CLASS POEM
The class of classes '30 is,
We go through life with a bang, and whiz
We're now the honored class, and true
In the year to come we've more to dog
But no matter what arises, still
We will proceed with mighty and will
Uphold or better Palestine Hi.
Our motto is 'do or die.'
In the past we'Ve fame and honor won,
To reach new heights for us is fun.
The Senior Class of '29
ls unsurpassable and fine,
With one exception, you shall see,
And that exception will truly be
The class of '30g remember that by
Our unwritten motto We'll 'do or die.'
We'll not forget them while they're here,
We'll let them have some fame this year.
True as they pass We'll not forget
To wish them happiness, and yet
We hope that they've success in store,
Because we've still to pass the door
Which, in this year, they shall pass by.
Classmates, remember, 'do or dief
-Clayton Schindler.

SOPHOMORE CLASS HISTORY
"On a four year's cruise we set sailg
At the halfway mark we did not fail."
We were as green as the average Freshman when we entered High School on the
twelfth of September, nineteen hundred and twenty-seven, but we became wiser each
day, first learning that room eleven was not the gym as an obliging junior had said.
When the matter of classrooms was straightened our next great difficulty was in un-
derstanding the huge words the Seniors used. Imagine our surprise when we learned
that catastrophe was not a biological term,
With Mr. Higgins as our guide we soon forgot our shyness and entered into activ-
ities with unsurpassed enthusiasm. The class was represented in varsity football and
basketball and in the Taggart Prize Contest.
This year has found the Sophomore class, aided by Miss Williams, one of the most
active in the school. Again it has been represented in football and basketball. It not
only excels in athletics, but in intellect as well, for the Sophomores have that will to
learn that cannot be stilled. ln each activity that brings honor to our Alma Mater'
they take part willingly.
The enthusiasm, pep and loyalty of the Sophomores to reach high ideals cannot
but bring improvements to our Alma Mater. May the class of '31 in the two years to
come, to the words, "You Must" and "You Should" always reply, "We Can" and "We
Will."
-Martha Cowan.

FRESHMAN CLASS HISTORY
On September 10, 1928, ninety-nine of us so-called "Greenies" entered E. P. H. S.
as Freshmen. The upper classmen, Sophomores, especially, greeted us with colored
paints of warfare iwhich we enjoyed immenselyl.
After several days of confusion we finally accustomed ourselves to the arrange-
ment of our classes and our much-beloved studies VID.
We soon were able to show our "stuff" as the football season opened. VVe are very
proud of the fact that several of our boys made the second team, with a good chance
to be "the" varsity next year. As the girls did not have a chance at football, their time
came to exhibit their ability in basketball. We are proud to see several of them on
the team.
Soon this year of toil and grief will be ended. We shall go one step higher, making
room for a new Freshman Class.
We, the Freshmen of 1928-1929 will not forget to greet the new "Freshies," as we
were - greeted.
Herefs to the Freshman Class! May we have success throughout our school life,
and be worthy of our Alma Mater!
-Lenore Skinner.

REVIEW OF THE SEASON
What bid fair at the start to be a most successful football season in every way was
spoiled for our "Brown and White" gridders by conspiring circumstances of the most
fateful sort. After several years of mediocrity in the grid pastime, Palestine rooters
felt that their day of mercy had come, but it was not to be.
Opening the season on the local lleld, the Brown and White eleven poured open on
Newell, W. Va., who, with the aid of the final whistle, halted a slashing attack, while
on the lower end of a 42-6 score.
Sebring, Ohio, the next week, reversed tables on our boys, and bade them down to
their worst defeat of 25-7.
On the following Saturday, the Ward machine trounced Salineville 19-6, showing
real form.
Journeying to East Liverpool a week later, the Brown and White Squadron bowed
to fateful defeat with a 24-12 count.
With crowds roaring for a win, after Steinhauser's brilliant run of 65 yards and a
touchdown, only to be recalled as void, fate again entered the fracas and handed a
close 6-0 victory to Lisbon, Ohio.
With the prospect of an easy victory over Leetonia, Ohio, in view, eleven Brown
and White clad boys took the field, and after four quarters of miserable football, took
leave of the gridiron with nothing better than a 13-13 score.
One week later, our boys locked horns with Boardman. Holding them more than
even on straight football did not give us victory, for they opened an aerial attack, which
was miserably repelled, and whipped us with an 18-0 decision.
A 6-0 victory over Columbiana, our arch enemies in the althetic line, seemed to
instill the needed fight. For, although going down to defeat, the boys displayed the
best ball of the season against Salem, who won a close 9-0 score.

DORNON-"Joe's" work at center
was of such sparkling color as to win
him All-County honors, from the au-
thors of the mythical eleven picked
from county teams. He will be back
next year as Captain.
STEINHAUSER-'tSteiny's" work at
fullback was nothing short, if not sen-
sational. Undoubtedly the greatest
punter in the county. "Steiny" also re-
turns to smash the line for another
year.
HERBERT-Chosen by many as one
of the greatest tackles in this section.
"Cow" landed on the county's second
selection. He is not through "football-
ing" yet, so watch him next year.
COSTANZO-"Tony" towered in the
Boardman and Salem contests. His
work in these games marked him as a.
star. We are very unfortunate at hav-
ing June exercises rob us of "Tony's"
services.
GORBY-"Hal" in his second year on
the squad supplied the needed strength
at the left wing position. His departure
in June leaves a "gap" that will be dif-
ficult to till in the brilliant manner that
was his.
TAUS-Alternating at guard and
end, "Ungie" was a big figure in "E.
P. H. S." defense. We are fortunate
in having him for another year.
SKALKOS-"Stum's" work at guard
and as captain was a big factor in our
games. He will be gone next year, but
not forgotten.

MARSHALL-"Mac" was invaluable
to the team at guard, showing remark-
able form throughout the season. We
are sorry to see graduation rob us of
his services for next year.
WERTZ-One of the smallest back-
field men in the county, was neverthe-
less one of the hardest to stop. Only
an injury prevented "Doc" from win-
ning more honors. Two more years of
football for this chap, so we know what
to expect.
MOLLENKOPF-As a halfback by
request, "Molly" rendered yeoman's
service. His line bucks and passes
were a gold mine to the- team. We are
sorry to see "Molly" go in June.
HARTFORD-i'Tubby" proved con-
clusively during the season that he is
one of the greatest tackles in "E, P.
H. S." history. It is our luck to have
him with us for two more seasons.
TAUS-"Petey's" ability at end was
shown conclusively throughout the sea-
son. "Long" and "Lanky," he took ev-
erything in his reach, and held on. We
are glad to welcome him for another
season.
GORBY-"Doc's" services to the
"Brown and White" through two sea-
sons has been very considerable. His
off-tackle sneaks were always good.
We expect great things of "Doc" this
coming season.
CURRY-A fast, shifty back who
showed class as a broken field runner
and as a passer. He was handicapped
by injuries throughout the season.
Nevertheless, he always showed him-
self a clean, hard fighter and one who
will be missed next fall.
SMITH-Improving as the season
progressed, "Smitty" showed remarka-
ble form against Salem. He stays for
two more years.

At the season's entry, Coach Ward faced the difficult problem of bolstering up a
team, with only three experienced men. But he whipped a team into shape that pre-
sented very creditable performances in most ofthe gams. Encountered with difficult
opposition at every outset, the "Brown and White" lads were strong enough to break
even with the schedule.
Prospects for next year are very encouraging, with a wealth of new talent in
VVertz, Dickens, Oliver and Kirtley, and other members of our varsity squad.

MOLLENKOPF-"M01ly's" steady work as leader of the Brown and White quintet
was instrumental in landing him among the high scorers of the county.
SMITH-This boy's uncanny shots thrilled many a spectator during the season.
Only a Sophomore and one of the county's leading scorers-"well, Hgure it out."
TRAPNELL-In his first year as a wearer of the Brown and White, "Trappy" dis-
played basketball of the highest calibre. Another year should make him one of the best.
VAN FOSSAN-"Katzy's" consistent work at the "tip-off" position was wonderful.
He has a real basketball build and uses every ounce of it to real advantage.
FALCON-This smiling lad was one of the surprises of the season. He displayed
wonderful work at guard. This was his iirst and last year at the court pastime, and
we are sorry to lose him.
CURRY-"Ken" was one of the best all-around players on the team. His fast floor'
work and guarding established for him a worthwhile record. He was a great help to
the team and will be missed a great deal next year,

CAPTAIN EVELYN SHENK right forward this year. This was
her third year on the varsity and a very successful one. As a captain she was excel-
lent. Her teamwork was remarkable as well as her shooting ability. She will be greatly
missed from next year's lineup.
GENEVIEVE BOTT--Left forward, has the record for high scorer. She has been
on the team four years. She could pass skillfully and knew many clever tricks. Here's
wishing her success in better things.
ELIZABETH BARNHOUSE--Center. Although she did not play on the first team
the first few games, she developed into a capable center, of which any team could be
proud. This was her first year on the varsity. '
VERGIE REESH-Right guard. Vergie always "pounced on 'em." She was always
at the right place at the right time. This is her second year, and we expect to see her
keep up the good work next season.
MARGARET HALL-Left guard. This was Peg's first year on the varsity. She
has lots of pep and enthusiasm which helps a lot in winning games.
IVERNESS GORBY-Center guard. Another new member of the varsity who de-
veloped into one of the best players. She will be counted upon for next year's team,
. GRACE BROOK-Playing the first semester as center forward, she held down this
position with remarkable success. Grace had a clever passing attack and will be
greatly missed on next year's team.

GIRLS' VARSITY
At the close of any basketball season, the fsrst question usually asked is, "Was
our team successful or not?i' Although not winners of the county championship, they
ran a close second, losing only to two county teams.
One thing that is very essential in developing a strong team is the co-operation of
the different members of the team with the coach. Great credit is due Coach Williams
and Evelyn Shenk for building up such a good team and to the girls for their faithful
practice throughout the season.
Success does not mean merely winning games. Success is measured by sportsman-
ship, and at all times the girls established as their standard, "An honorable victory
or nonefi
"For when the one Great Scorer comes
To write against your name, -
He writes not that you won or lost,
But how you played the game."

TRACK
In recent years tl1e track team has become an integral part of High School Ath-
letics, and has played an important role in building up the reputation of East Palestine
High School.
The team this season began under somewhat of a handicap with only three letter-
men: Curry, as Captain, H. Gorby and Smith, back.
There were, however, many new recruits, and these men were at once rounded
into shape by Coach Ward. '
The local team placed high in the meet at Salem, also in the invitation meet at
Geneva, Beaver Falls, Pa. The track men won many honors for themselves and their
school at the county meet in Salem and also at the district meet held at Salem.
It is hoped that next year's team will be as good if not better than this year's, and
with the great wealth of material possible we have every reason to believe that it
will be.

One of the most outstanding organizations of the High School is the Ephanian
Staff. In the years to come we hope the class members may often look at our Ephanian
and think of "those good old days" and appreciate it more and more as the years
roll by.
For this reason the staff has put forth every effort to make this an interesting and
worthwhile Edition.

THE TRUMPETER
It was in the year 1923 that Fred Merwin became the tirst editor of The Trumpeter.
This was the first paper that the East Palestine High School had ever had. Fred was
at that time a Junior. He edited the paper that year and also the next, his Senior year.
The paper was then well started on its road to success-both in a financial and liter-
ary way. The succeeding editors were Luella Hartley, Kenneth Keller, Mary Belle
Wertz. The assistant editor of this year, Charles Merwin, will be the editor-in-chief next
year.
Since the beginning of these publications it has been customary for the paper to be
published at least live times a year. The staff of this year has published six editions.
This has been a co-operative staff and under Martha's guidance has put out very com-
mendable papers. u

THE STUDENT COUNCIL
As a novel branch of the High School's organization, a Student Council was intro-
duced this year. One day last fall out of u clear sky lVlr. Palmer addressed the assem-
bly and explained the workings of a council of this type. After there was a complete
understanding among the students about the council, everyone was requested to Write
the names of six boys and six girls upon a slip of paper. These were the names of the
students whom they-the assembly-considered best fitted to have a part in this coun-
cil. The results were as follows: Esther Kirtley, Maxine Beyer, Ruth Williamson,
Martha Angle, Vergie Reesh, Alice Meek, Charles Merwin, Angello Skalkos, Glenn
XVard, Albert Menke, Edson Ilorsfall and Frank Gorby.
These students formed the council. At their tirst meeting Charles Me1'win was
elected president, Glenn VVard, vice president, and Esther Kirtley, secretary.
The primary object of this council was to deal with all extra-curricular activities,
such as clubs and the formation of an orchestra. After the clubs had been started and
all of the extra-curricular activities were going smoothly, it seemed that the work of
the Council was over.
However, it was discovered that no better place could be found for the majority
of the students to voice their opinions of certain matters if they wished them to receive
immediate attention than in the presence of some members of the council.
Such matters as replenishing the supply oi books on the reading table and sup-
planting the glass fixtures on the lights in the assembly hall with heavier frames, were.
brought about through the influence of this Council.
Long live the Council!

CAMERA AND ART CLUB
On November 10, a small group of students of our High School wl1o were desirous
of laying aside the frivolous and ordinary interests of life, to consider some of the.
more beautiful things in the world of art, met in Room 8 and organized the Camera and
Art Club.
Originally the club included those interested in camera and poster work, but sub-
sequently other departments were added to accommodate the artistic tendencies of a
number of the members, consequently the pennant, painting, and music department
originated.
The officers elected are: Clayton Schindler, Presidentg Althea Henry, Secretaryg
Sponsor, Mr. Arnold.
One of the most interesting features of the bi-weekly meetings is the exhibit of

GLEE CLUB
The Girls' Glee Club of this year was one of the most successful branches of the
High School's organization. This club was not originated at the beginning of the
term as the rest of the clubs were.
The iirst meeting was called on Wednesday afternoon at 3:30 in the second week
of October. It was decided at this meeting that 6:30 on each Wednesday would be a
more convenient time to meet.
The second meeting was held on the next Wednesday at 6:30 in the Junior High
auditorium. The officers were elected. The election resulted as follows: President,
Alice Meekg vice president, Florence Hayg secretary and treasurer, Vergie Reeshg
librarian, Evelyn Shenkg assistant librarian, Margaret Menke.
This club has been very successful in its activities of the year. The members gave
a tea and there was a clever program given by different girls of the club.
There were no compulsory dues, but each member has the privilege of dropping a
coin into a little box that was placed in a conspicuous position. This money helped
pay for the music that was purchased for the club.
A great deal of credit is due Mrs. Palmer and Miss Cherry. lt was under the able
direction of Mrs. Palmer that the voices were tried and correctly placed, lt was her
hearty co-operation and never-failing enthusiasm that led the little ship Glee Club to
the harbor Success.
As a reliable cohort there was Miss Cherry. Never forgetting a practice and never
tiring of repeated calls of "Give us our pitch, Miss Cherry," it was this willingness
that was a model for the girls. The co-operation of the entire group is the quality that
led to Accomplishment and Contentment.

LYCEUM COURSE
The Lyceum Course opened October 29 at the M. E. church with the Killarney
Colleens. Their program consisted ot stories, Irish jokes, readings and music, and was
well received by the audience. -
The second number was a famous impersonator, John B. Ratto, and was presented
December 3 at the Presbyterian Church. His program was full of life and action with
never a dull moment. He gave us some very interesting and impressive impersonations.
A very unusual number was the third one. Robert Jackson's Plantation Singers
appeared on the Lyceum program January 10 at the Christian Church. Their program
was devoted to Negro spirituals, southern songs and plantation melodies. The number
was highly appreciated by the audience because of its unique appeal.
Rolf Lium, President Coolidge's pastor at Black Hills, entertained us with a lecture
for the fourth number. He talked on the "Spirit of Youth," and he gave us interesting
personal experiences concerning the President and Mrs. Coolidge. This number was
presented January 21 at the Presbyterian Church.
The last number on our course was a drama, "The Detour," given at the Christian
Church February 13. It was a remarkable play, with excitement running through the
entire production.

SENIOR CLASS PLAY
"Welcome Home, Jimmie" was presented by the Senior Class of 1929 at the Chris-
tian Church, May 14 and 15.
Mr. Valentine Gardner, a young lawyer, is mistaken for Jimmie Brooks. In order
that the family of Jimmie will not be disappointed, Val and his friend, Chess, stay and
work on Mrs. Brook's farm. They encounter many difficulties, which are highly amus-
ing. Both Val and Chess fall in love, helping to advance the plot. A very pleasing
drama of modern farm life, with enough humor and pathos to hold interest throughout
the play. The cast:

"HURRY! HURRY! HURRY! "
The High School has been in the habit of putting on a High School Operetta, but
this year they digressed from the usual routine and put on a High School Play, en-
titled t'Hurry! Hurry! Hurry!"
The Dramatic Club is to be complimented upon the fact that the final cast was
chosen entirely from its members.
"Hurry! Hurry! Hurry!" is a modern play, and yet the plot is unique. The scene
opens with a bang, that of falling packages, and Mr. Hooker's financial crash. There
is only one thing that will divert the disaster-that is F1oy's engagement before mid-
night. This is the central idea. Many laughable incidents occur when her brother and
mother try to arrange her engagement with Ted Stone and Professor Bartholomew.
At last, with the help of Miss Brown, and, through his own act of ingenuity-
setting the clock ahead-Steve succeeds in bringing about Floy's engagement to Jack
Crandall. The cast:
Mrs. Hooker ...., ...... G enevieve Bott
Mr. Hooker ....... ..... H alwyn Gorby '
Floy ...........,. .... M artha Angle

Ted Stone ............................ .......... A ngello Skalkos
Professor Bartholomew ...... ....... J ohn Istinick
Jack Crandall .................. ...... K enneth Curry

The play was under the capable direction of Miss Williams, sponsor of the Dra-
matic Club.
