8:
To the Class of 1988
You entered East Meadow High School
as boys and girls. You're leaving as ladies
and gentlemen. You have often been told
that the future is in your hands. Seize it
and make the most of it.
Personally, I thank you for providing me
with some outstanding memories for the
future. With a degree of sadness and
pride, 1 wish you farewell and the best of
luck. May the future bring you success
and happiness.
To the Class of 1988:
Your yearbook is a representation of your high school
years, which, in most cases, will be among the most
memorable of your lives. These are the years for mak-
ing critical decisions and lasting friendships. It is a time
of peaks and valleys when adolescence is transformed
to adulthood; a time when you experience the ac-
companying joys and the sorrows, the days of solace
and the days of turmoil and proud moments and
disappointments, all of which constitute the process of
growth. As the years progress, your yearbook will be
the vehicle which will allow you to recapture these
memories. May you use it in good health and may all
our memories be fond ones.
Best wishes for health and happiness in all your future
endeavors.

Jet GazetteThe Je Gazette, the source of news
and controversy at EMHS, is always
eagerly read when it hits the stands in
homeroom each month. Features,
such as Solid Goldberg and the in-
depth coverage of major events, make
the school newspaper an integral part
of life at EMHS. Under the leadership
of Editor-in-Chief Jason Goldstein,
Associate Editors Eugene Kim and
Sara Simon, and Business Manager
Paul Henman, the Jet Gazette has in-
troduced several innovations.
Chief among these was the fact that
the school newspaper had finally be-
come a monthly, an issue being pro-
duced during each of the ten school
months. Another noticeable innova-
tion was the introduction of color in
several of the issues.
As usual, the Jet Gazette continued
its tradition of lively and provocative
stories, and it continued in the ex-
cellent journalistic tradition estab-
lished by Mr. James Connolly, faculty
adviser.in od o "a

Perspective is one of East Meadow High
School's fine publications. The literary mag-
azine is published annually and is distributed
throughout the school in June. Staff members
meet each week to read and review the short
stories, poetry, prose and essays that are sub-
mitted. The material goes through a lengthy
editorial process until the staff is satisfied that
the magazine has a unique blend of style and
content.
The club is headed by Editors-in-Chief Ja-
son Goldstein, a senior, and Cindy Zarin, a
junior; Assistant Editor Sara Simon, a senior;
Art Editor Lisa Fries, a senior; Layout Editor
Sandra Okalica, a junior; Secretary Tali
Mejicovsky, a sophomore; and Faculty Ad-
visor Mr. Jack Walz.

of great achievements. The club raised
a total of $5,500 for the March of
Dimes through participation in the
Super Ride and a Stay-Awake-Athon
held at the school. Their single service
project for the year was producing a
rock video for elementary school chil-
dren that taught them to Say No to
Drugs. They co-chaired the Thanks-
giving Day Dinner for the elderly with
the F.B.L.A. and played host to the
New York State Regional Training
Conference. East Meadow High

Students sometimes, on very rare
occasions, have been known to study
— actually study; but we are happy to
report that this phenomenon is rare and
with the proper treatment will shortly
have vanished from the face of the
earth and provide only amusing
memories, like stories of witches and
goblins.
After all, youth is too precious a
commodity to be wasted on study.
There are too many things to attract our
interest and exhaust the precious hours
of our youth. We live in a world that
offers constant distraction, constant
entertainment, constant gratification.
We live in a world that values the
sensational, the loud, and the easy.
Introspection and scholarship are not
much admired.
Still, there are those strange souls,
deficient by virtue of heredity or
environment, who do manage to study,
who read for the joy of reading, who
explore for the sake of curiosity, who
practice for the sake of mastery. While
such ones are with us, they must be
watched carefully, for they are possibly
dangerous.
Studying 129LIBRARY
RESEARCH
What is the one place
where all good students
can be found inevitably
at one time or another?
At home, of course, but
that's not what we
mean. Our objective
was the library — that
huge collection of
books, magazines, mi-
crofilms, and essays that
has saved many stu-
dents from failing to
complete a report.
Two months ago a
student was given a re-
port to do on life in an-
cient Egypt, and it falls
due tomorrow. What
can he do? He heads for
the library — our own
well stocked school li-
brary or the East Mead-
ow Public Library.
Scholarship demands
sacrifices. Our student
heads for the library,
thereby giving up time
more pleasantly spent at
the movies or with
friends. But the library
can offer its own con-
solations. It is a place
where one can run into
old friends and pass
away the hours in pleas-
ant conversation, inter-
rupted occasionally by
the rebukes of the librar-
ians.
Still, the work has to
be done. Life in ancient
Egypt must be reported
on, references cited,
footnotes checked, bib-
liographies completed.
Finally, the student
buckles down to work,
one hand copying furi-
ously, one eye watching
the clock because the
closing time is fast ap-
proaching — but finally,
the work gets done and
our student is saved
from a failure.

You can hear the rumble a mile away,
people are flocking towards the doors. It
can mean only one thing: COLLEGE
FAIR!! What better way can be thought
of to get out of class? The seniors, jun-
iors, and even some sophomores head
on down to the cafeteria with their col-
lege sweatshirts in tow, ready to pledge
loyalty. There seems to be something for
everyone ... the Ivies, military, and local
schools, the choice is yours. All parts of
the country are well represented. Who
would even guess there was a school
named Southwest Oklahoma Tech? As
the college fair ends, the halls echo with
the sounds of "Hey, did you see that
brochure from U-Mass?" followed by
"Yeh, but I can't get in!!!" Even if the
school of our dreams is not found on the
first try, the East Meadow High School
student knows there will always be an-
other College Fair sometime soon.

EDUCATION
Most East Meadow students pursue an
academic program in high school, yet
many students choose the equally im-
portant vocational route to a diploma.
East Meadow High School can be jus-
tifiably proud of its enviable vocational
program.
Under the direction of Mr. Dawson,
students who enjoy working with a saw,
nail or hammer can join the Woodshop
class. The course is not only educational
but enjoyable as well. Students learn to
draw up plans creatively. Projects rang-
ing from simple bookends to fine
cabinets are the result of this productive
class.
Mr. Burke teaches Machine Shop. In
this class, students get hands-on expe-
rience with heavy machinery and tools.
We all watch T.V. and listen to the
radio, but how many people know what
to do when one breaks down? The stu-
dents in Mr. Blasio's Radio and Elec-
tronics course learn how to fix the highly
technical electronic instruments that we
use each day.
Are you interested in car engines, car-
buretors or transmissions? Then Mr. Mo-
ses' auto mechanics course is for you.
One learns how to dismantle and rebuild
a car from top to bottom. Anyone in this
course knows how to detect and correct
just about any automotive problem. Af-
ter passing a hands-on test, the students
receive an inspector's license.
If you have a free period and are in
need of a haircut, manicure, or a facial,
then Mrs. Buffone's cosmetology room is
the place to go. The services provided are
offered to the faculty, the students, and
the general public. After completing the
course, the students receive temporary
licenses and are eligible to take the state
examination for a beauticians license.
Creative minds can express their tal-
ents in Mrs. Roy's fashion design room.
Students in this class design clothes in
any style and color. Expect to see the
names of some East Meadow graduates
on the label on your shirt at some time in
the not too distant future.
These vocational courses are examples
of the many opportunities that East
Meadow High School offers to its stu-
dents.

lesson was learned, school wasn't
over.
Lesson number 2 was given to them
by a crosstown rival. Division Avenue
H.S. In a tough defensive game the
Jets were held scoreless and lost 14-0.
The offense was sporadic and could
not mount a strong attack the entire
game. The defense appeared off to a
shakey start when it allowed 14 points
in the 1st quarter. After that the de-
fense held Division scoreless.
In their next game the Jets faced the
Gold Tornadoes of Lawrence H.S. The
offense once again sputtered to a dis-
mal performance. Kevin Baudo was
the lone Jet scorer with 2 field goals,
accounting for all 6 of East Meadow's
points. Final Score: Lawrence 31-E.M.
6.
Although the Jets started off 0-3
they kept their heads up and chests
out knowing that they would rebound
from a poor start. In their next 2
games, tne Jets not only lit up the
scoreboard on offense, but established
a crushing defense.
Against Plainview, the Jets' running
game dominated their opponent.
Dave Jack scored the game's first 3
touchdowns on runs of 43, 3 and 11
yards. He also had a total of 101 yards
on 5 carries. Gerard Mule also had an
outstanding day with 101 yards on ten
carries and 2 touchdowns. The final
Jet to score was Bart Todd on a 10 yard
run. Kevin Baudo and Bob Abshire
each converted orr an extra point at-
tempt. The defense played a strong
game, holding Plainview to 12 yards
total offense. Linebackers Rich En-
temann and Ed Boll combined for 16
tackles. Plainview's lone touch down
at the game's closing moments gave
them 8 points to E.M.'s 38.
The rest of the Jet's season was
good including their terrific victory for
our homecoming game.

This fall the East Meadow High School Junior Varsity
Football Team made school history by posting its first un-
defeated and untied season. During the course of the season
they posted 4 shut-outs in their first four games which is
another school record. These opponents included Calhoun
14-0, Bellmore Kennedy 41-0, Great Neck North 21-0 and
Herricks 27-0. The remaining 3 opponents were much
tougher and stronger teams. The J.V. JETS went over to
Garden City and preserved their undefeated record with a
19-2 win. Next came a powerful Sewanhaka team. At the
half the score was 27-0 with a 36-8 final. Their final game
was against a 5 and 1 Mepham team noted for its high
powered passing attack. In the end the Jets won 21-6. The
entire team is to be congratulated for their hard work and
dedication. The team scored an unprecedented 179 points,
while allowing only 19.

fine performances for their last season. The
team brought themselves up to a great level of
competition, with the help of their coach, Mr.
Kunkle. The Girls' Tennis team wishes the
best of luck to next year's team, and is very
proud of the great work they did this year.

CHAMPIONS!
RIFLE
TEAM
Once again the East Meadow High
School rifle team is undefeated after yet
another year in competition. Most of the
shooters are from last year and the ex-
perience shows. Senior captains are Ken
Hutter, who is ranked 1 in all of Nassau
County and Paul Herman who is ranked
5th. This season the team shot a very im-
pressive score of 1331, which is a new
school record. The team also holds 9 wins
and 0 defeats which just adds to their un-
defeated record of 182 consecutive wins
over the past 16 years. This team is sure to
beak more records in the years to come.
Congratulations to EMHS's finest! Congrat-
ulations also to Coach Peter Visconti who
has continued former Coach Cullum's fine
tradition.

The Girls' Field Hockey team had a disappointing
season, caused mainly by the lack of mature, seasoned
players on the team. The team was composed pri-
marily of sophomores, with comparatively few juniors
and seniors.
Despite the tremendous odds the ladies were play-
ing against. Captains Gina Penna and Tara Hunt
sparked the team to even greater efforts. Courage was
not lacking on the playing field.
Although this year's team did not make the play-
offs, the strong coaching by Coach Lehmann produced
a tremendous improvement among the sophomores,
and the Girls' Field Hockey team can look forward to
better seasons in the years to come.

We can chalk up the 1987-1988 Var-
sity Wrestling season as another success.
The East Meadow High School Wrestling
team, led by Captains John DiChiara, 9-
3-1, Mark Frisicano, 12-2, and Ed Leon-
ard, 22-1-1, earned a solid record of 7-6
for the year. Varsity starters, Kevin Se-
quiera, Ed Leonard, Mark Frisicano, John
DiChiara, Keith Sequiera, Larry Ricci,
Pete Aievoli, Dan Majcher, Dan Bum-
side, Ted Naima, Steve Marone, and
John Garrone, helped make the team
winners. Consistant contributors for the
team were Pete Aievoli, 11 wins, and
Larry Ricci and Dan Majcher, each with
16 wins. The dynamic duo of the Se-
quiera Brothers united forces to earn
close to 25 wins. And with only 3 starters
graduating, the future should be bright
as well. Among the JV team, top per
formances were shown by John O'Keefe,
9 wins; Craig Belis, 14 wins; Drew
Shinuck, 8 wins; and Tom Conti, 7 wins.
The efforts of Dave Laspina, Anthony
Donzini, Jom Denicker, Todd Mazzie,
Andy Buttafuoco, Brad Field, and Sean
Bennett helped to finish the JV season
with a record of 6-4. Much kudos to the
coaches, John Hamilton and Bruce
Bardes, for molding a wrestling team that
East Meadow can be proud of.

The 1987 88 basketball season proved to be a
rough one for the JETS. The team finished with
a record of 5 17. Although they had a poor
record, they always played hard and kept most
of the games close. Led by tri-captains Bob
Abshire, Ed Clavin, and Dave Jack, and Coach
Mike McClain, the JETS fought through a
schedule that included — Freeport, Glen Cove,
Uniondale, Great Neck North, Hicksville, and
Massapequa. The highlight of the season was
the Christmas Tournament where the JETS
came in second.
The team scoring leader was Chris Reilly who
averaged 18 points a game and other consistent
scorers included Ed Clavin, Tim Guynn, and
Shane Dormady. Other JETS who gave their all
included Seth Chalmck, Bill Abshire, Vinny
Dipalo, Adam Schildkraut, and Danny Wein
stein. Although the record may suggest oth-
erwise, the JETS had a good season and a great
time playing together as a unit.(Top Left) — The Varsity Basketball Team carefully

192 BOOSTERSCandids 193JUNIOR PROM
From the first day of school until the
day before the main event, the question
out of everyone's mouth was,
"Who are you going to the prom
with?"
OR
"Is it a stretch or a formal?"
OR
"To tux or not to tux?"
The panic faded as the excitement in-
creased ... Our Junior Prom was held on
May 29, 1987, at The Crystal Palace East
in Farmingdale. The evening's theme
and official song was "Heaven," sung by
Bryan Adams. And heaven it was. When
the dinner and dancing was done, limos
went their separate ways. The festivities
had just begun. Some went to the beach
while others hit the hot spots in the city
for some action. Those who could get out
of bed the next morning spent the day at
Great Adventure, while the others slept
through the day.(Top Row) Carmine Biscardi looks as if he's

Junior Prom 201The Halloween Dance is an annual tradition at
EMHS. On Friday, October 30, the gymnasium was
transformed into a haunted disco. Sponsored by Key
Club and the Senior Class, the Halloween Dance was a
success.
"Creative" is the appropriate term to describe some
of the costumes that night. Among the creatures were
jailbirds, tourists, storybook characters, grapes, a gar-
bage can, and rock stars — to name a few.
One of the many highlights of the evening was the
male wet t-shirt contest. Senior Class President, Jack
Latorre had the pleasure of dumping a pail of water on
each contestant's head. Michael Hall came in first
place with Stephen Goldberg a close second.
It was a night enjoyed by all.

RALLY
Several times a year the students
at EMHS have an opportunity to
cheer on their teams. Aided by the
band members, Rockettes, and
Cheerleaders, our heroes are given
the opportunity to bask in the wor-
ship of their fans. It also gives the
students a shortened day.
An innovation during the 1987-
1988 school year was the holding
of a pep rally on the eve of the big
Homecoming Game.

The Homecoming Game is one of the truly mem-
orable events in the EMHS calendar. It climaxes weeks
of anxious preparation by practically every member of
the EMHS community. The high point is, of course,
the game itself. This year the Jets faced the Merrick
Rams and enjoyed a well earned victory.
The halftime show allows the different classes to
express their creativity and imagination. This year's
theme was "LET FREEDOM RING." The Senior float
re-enacted the Boston Tea Party. The Junior Float
depicted "Purple Mountains Majesty" and the Soph-
omores introduced famous American historical figures.
The big question of Homecoming is, who will be
chosen Queen. This year's lucky winner was Claudine
Floridia. Her court consisted of Karen Cirillo, Kim
Roesch, Kaycee Wise, and Maryann Casella. Con-
gratulations, your Majesty.

"1 get by with a little help from my friends ..
Friendship .. . how else could we have survived these
past few years? Your friends are what kept you going. But
friendship isn't as simple as it was when we were young.
Your friends no longer depend on who has the biggest
swingset or who has the best Barbie Doll cohesion.
Whether we choose to admit it or not, we have grown and
learned a lot during our stay at E.M.H.S. We've formed
opinions and ideas, developed beliefs and, more than
anything else, learned about tnist. And it's those people
who share those beliefs and earn that trust that we choose
as our friends.
And I don't think any one of us could have made it
through a single day without friends. Your alarm doesn't
?o offT you miss your bus, your locker jams, you're late for
st period, you fall flat on your face in gym, you drop your
lunch all over the floor, and you fail four tests. Yet those
friends of yours will manage to force a smile out of you
just when you need it most And when you feel like you’re
about to crumble and break down in tears, your friend's
shoulder always seems to appear in the nick of time.
These are the days that will remain in your heart
forever. Any hurt or pain you've experienced during your
high school years will slowly fade away. But the fondest
memories will consist of the special times spent with your
friends. It's almost scary, but all those sentiments ex-
pressed in Hallmark cards are beginning to make a lot
more sense.
'Winter, spring, summer, or fall

friends that you have in High School will
always be the best. You know that thev
have been there for you and you will al-
ways be there for them. That is what friend-
ship is all about.

"I NEED FOOD!!!''
"Roy's or Mr. Donut?"
"I'm on a diet ... again."
"Mickey D's or BUST!"
To most, lunch is the focal point of the
day. Whether one chooses cafeteria food,
a bagged lunch or dining out, students
have many culinary options. The
Turnpike' offers a myriad of restaurants
to satisfy even the most select palates:
pizza, burgers, Chinese food, french
fries, deli, bagels or ice cream. But lunch
period is not only about food. The free
period allows time to catch up on gossip,
homework, last minute studying and
sleep!

different as the person who
decorates it. They reflect our

The alcove is one of the oldest tra-
ditions at East Meadow High School. No
matter what time of the day, the bus exit
is crowded with kids. It's a sort of private
country club that constitutes as a major
part of many of our students' high school
life.To most the most important and most
productive parts of their day is spent in
the hallways. The halls are THE source
for gossip, catching up, and getting
homework. There is always something
interesting going on in our hallways.
(Above) Simone Zucker and Sherri Kalman rush to

216 HallwaysFASHION
The students of East Meadow High
School certainly "dare to be different" in
their fashion tastes. The majority of stu-
dents are content to be comfortable in
Reeboks, Levi's, and a sweatshirt. But
then there are those who you see walk-
ing down the hall as a walk down a
fashion runway. A standard closet in-
cludes Champion sweatshirts, an EM Jets
jersey, a Gap sweater, a college sweat-
shirt and a denim jacket. A handful of
students dress with a style all their own.
These people express themselves with a
twist of the unexpected. One can count
on seeing the latest fashions pass
through the halls of EMHS.

Dare to be free.
You can be you and
I can be me!
On the outside we may differ:
The way we look, the way we
act;
On the inside we are much
alike;
Similarities are stacked.
We share beliefs and hopes
and dreams.
Common aspirations;
A special bond that won't
dissolve
After graduation.
We are the Class of '88.
Farewell to high school days.
The things we've shared.
The things we've dared,
Time cannot erase.
