In the ten years that Mr. McKinney has been with us, he has proven that he is not merely a teacher of English, but also a teacher of philosophy, theology, and politics and a super Debate Coach. His classes are inundat- ed with clever witticisms and relevant statements that make us think about our past, present and future. His perception and comments have illuminated our way through the worlds of Shakespeare, science-fiction and fantasy. Mr. McKinney ' s success as a teacher stems, not only from a desire to teach, but from a true interest in what he teaches. Even the quietest of us seems to open up and express our views in his presence. Sometimes humorous, sometimes serious he can always sur- prise his classes with new facts, Shakespearean quotes and amazing sto- ries. His cleverness and ability to define and clarify a point are exemplified by his success as the Debate Coach. After school on Fridays, his voice is immediately recognized as the dominant one in the discussion group. He believes what he teaches and he combines his opinions with the most unexciting subjects (like vocabu- lary), thus Mr. McKinney holds the student ' s attention, challenging him to learn. He is an educator in the true sense of the word. For these reasons we dedicate Aegis 77, without hesitation to Charles McKinney, an outstanding teacher and person. i 19 Mr. Mrs. Albert Bailey 3rd Mr. Mrs. Karl C. The Foundation, originally conceived by the P.T.A. to provide financial aid for young residents of East Longmeadow, has through the years awarded over $115,000 in scholarships. The funds provided to students are realized by contributions from local businesses, clubs, an annual house to house drive for funds, and gifts given to the Personal Rememberance Fund, honoring or in memory of friends. Amoung the awards given are the East Longmeadow Education Association Scholarship Award, the Cynthia Wade Memorial Award, given to students who plan a career in nursing, and the Lions Club Scholarship Award. Through the efforts of this fine organization many local students have gained an opportunity for a better education and, because of this, the foundation deserves great commendation. I 26 Y £2r. Midwood scores again v 80 Power to the people With their great looks and death-defying antics, the cheerleaders were instrumental in many Spartan Football and Basketball victories. Led by co-captains, Mary Beth Griswold and Mary Weiner, these graceful young women whirled and twirled their way into the hearts of spectators and athletes alike. When the situation was grim and a hush fell over the crowd, these sprightly lasses raised our spirits with their repertoire of rowdy cheers. We will never forget the special dimension they added to our high school sports activities. We ' ve got the spirit Lou rambles on Patty pleases people i I I 81 The greatest glory consists not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall. Life ' s greatest adventure is in doing one ' s level best. If you cannot win, make the one ahead of you break the record. PLAY LITTLE LEAGUE SPARTANS WIN SUBURBAN LEAGUE TITLE Here they come Mike Lewis sheds a defender The EL football team once again proved their gridiron su- premacy as they rolled to a 9-1 record. This mark not only earned them a share of the Suburban League title, but also the chance to represent Western Mass in the High School Playoff Bowl. The overpowering strength of the Spartan line, led by Sen- iors Dave Bradstreet, John Dunn, and John Sharon, continually opened holes for MVP Jeff Dobias, Dagenais winner Mike Lewis and Junior standout, Rick Willis. When the other team did get control of the ball, the staunch EL Defense, led by Gordie Burson, made its hard-hitting presence known. What do we do now, fearless leader? As the game progressed however, the Spartans were forced to fight Mother Nature as well as the Northboro boys when a mid-winter blizzard descended on the stadium. Mother Nature couldn ' t stop the Spartan running backs as they accounted for nearly 200 yards rushing on the snow-covered field. Junior Rick Willis led the offensive charge with nearly 100 yards. The defense allowed only one Algonquin first down all day and held the Tomahawks score- less. When the snow finally cleared, the Spar- tans had completely dominated Algonquin 20- 0. More importantly, they had earned the Divi- sion II crown. Dobs dashes on Murphy looks over his troops 87 I.v. FOOTBALL York. Bill Ollari and high scorer Greg Wilk continually demonstrated their leadership throughout the year. Spartan sophomores, Rick Nasman and J.P. Murphy, proved to be promising for the future. Both, along with Wilk, received All-League honors. The highlight of the season was the 3-2 victory over Tech as the fans saw Jim McGowan send Wilk on a breakaway for the winner with one minute left in the contest. Mrs. Living- stone and the other ladies supply invaluable services without which the Principal ' s office probably couldn ' t function. Well, we like them anyway. ADMINISTRATION James Cokkinias, Assistant Principal SAVANTS For many years the Dept. Heads have provided direction ana purpose to the various programs of- fered as part of our curriculum. Creative minds and talented hands find that the Art Dept, offers everything from ceramics to pastels. Under Mr. Goldie ' s supervision, students venture into the abstract, creating masterpieces, not only for themselves but for the all-important mark. The Home Ec. Dept., led by Ms. Chmielewski, guides its students in creating subtly different mas- terpieces. Anyone trying to bake oread or sew a straight seam realizes the amount of talent needed to accomplish it. Mrs. Lopes and the librarians provide us with in- valuable services and an excellent source of refer- ence for research. Their efforts are appreciated. Who needs to talk anyway? Mr Bolles leads perhaps the school ' s most popular Dept. Few people object to a little exercise ana the staff ' s efforts to diversify help a lot. Besides, there ' s no homework. Mr. Camp and the other guidance counselors sup- ply us with advice in our selection of sources and colleges. Unfortunately they are often taken for granted until we need them and can ' t find them. For musically inclined people the Music Dept, un- der Mr. Charron opens doors into many different forms of music. Both singers and musicians find sat- isfaction either in select chorus or even in the band. The people of the Special Ed Dept, are probably the most overlooked and least appreciated of any of the groups. Their work with those students requir- ing individual attention deserves our recognition and thanks. Those students possessing the skill necessary to enjoy Industrial Arts certainly have the opportunity to do so. Mr Gauthier as chairman deserves credit as do the other teachers in this Dept, for their fine efforts and their ability to hold a straight face. More practical minds look to the Business Dept, and Mr. St. Germain for instruction. No matter where your interests center, these teachers will be glad to help, like it or not. Mrs. Fleming directs the Language Dept, which tries to educate us in the use of a foreign Language. Their work is excellent. Many of us become fluent in a Foreign language, though we still have trouble with our own. For many years Mr. Troutman and his fellow sci- ence teachers have instructed us. No one who has written a lab report can deny their determination to teach us to the best of their abilities. Mr. Roan ' s Social Dept, brings past and present events into focus for many who would otherwise be happily ignorant. The range of courses demonstrates their devotion to their work. Mr. Grocott and all the people in the English Dept, attempt to show us the beauty of literature and tne value of the properly spoken word. In their classes we develop our appreciation or we develop an un- speakable grade. Mr. Dutille and the Math Dept, do their level best to teach us numbers. Few people leave their courses without a better grasp of the intricacies of Math- ematics. At least, not if the department can help it. 132 AND MORE SAVANTS GUIDANCE Robert Camp Paul Dunajski Diane McCormick Brenda Briggs ART BUSINESS Marina Herschuk Joseph B. The General Court further finds that past methods of labeling and defining the needs of children have had a stigmatizing effect and have caused special education programs to be overly narrow and rigid, both in their content and their inclusion and exclusion policies. In the light of the policy of the commonwealth to provide an adequate, publicly supported education to every child resident therein, it is the purpose of this act to provide for a flexible and uniform system of special education program opportunities for all children requiring special education; to provide a flexible and nondiscriminatory system for identifying and evaluating the indi- vidual needs of children requiring special education; requiring evaluation of the needs of the child and adequacy of the special education program before placement and periodic evaluation of the benefit of the program to the child and the nature of the child ' s needs thereafter; and to prevent denials of equal educational opportunity on the basis of national origin, sex, economic status, race, religion, and physical or mental handicap in the provision of differential education services. Budding young scientists under the green thumb of Mr. Troutman have provided new hope in the area of botanical science. Huddled daily amongst the dense underbrush of the greenhouse, this bumper crop of under- classmen have managed to grow myriads of plants and flowers and defend their products from the deadly white flies. To further their efforts, the club held a flower sale during the spring elections. The three hundred dollars profit will be used to purchase new supplies and re- place worn out materials. This year several clubs and activities sponsored a highly successful Winter Carnival. Booths and contests of every type imaginable were used to separate money from students and parents alike. The ballon sale raised an impressive ( amount of money for the senior class just as the pie booth helped finance this years well-constructed yearbook. Those of us who didn ' t actually lay out a page or write copy provided important comic relief. Any effort of this size requires teamwork. We had our problems but by pulling together we overcame them and finally reached our goal. Special thanks go to Liz and her nimble fingers; Charlie and his tripod; and Jeff for his drawings ; it couldn ' t have even been finished without them. Thanks to John for keeping Paula busy, and Betsy for keeping track of birthdays and conducting the singing. Seriously, our deepest appreciation goes to everyone who helped make this book-including Brooksie who took plenty of pictures and developed most of them.
