As the saying goes, he is truly a ‘man for all seasons’; a journalist wizard, a tickler of the ivories, a white knight of the court, a Shakespeareian scholar. For his omniscient assistance, we dedicate Aegis ’74 to Mr. Irwin Kerson. 19 ■ Autumn to Winter, Winter into Spring, Spring into Summer, Summer into Fall, So rolls the changing year, and so we change; Motion so swift, we know not that we move. — D. M . Mulock i 22 Mike Santos Mark Stanton Loretta Weaver Mary lee Washburn On that cold and clammy fall morning, as the rain poured down from above, we entered our first day of high school. A maze of hallways and stairwells greeted us as we entered the mammoth double doors. Standing to the left was a command- ing figure smiling and nodding at various intervals as if elated to see the performance of this new congregation as we were I l I Steve Martin Lynn Perrault 24 25 Robert Lieberwirth Joe Holotka Mark Fernald Michael Manarite swallowed up in the confusion. A mus- tached young man stood in the hall di- recting anxious individuals to their rooms with his left hand and passing out detentions with his right to those creatures who took the wrong turn. After a mad scramble at two minutes before eight, and a long run to some room on an upstairs wing (an upstairs wing?), we were seated in alphabetic order according to our last name by some kind, befuddled lady. We had found our homerooms! Thomas Medrek Mike Lussier James Merrill Richard Pannier Dan Desnoyers Dan Dento 27 Mike Daniele Wendy Williams Kevin Chapman Before five after eight some man had told us through a box on the wall that X block was moved to this period and the distracted lady had passed out to us some six different cards and sheets to be filled out in triplicate in the next ten minutes. An hour later the box spoke again and told us to procede to our next class at the bell. 28 Mike Campanella Ping-pong Is His Game Jim Fontaine David Taft Jeanne Driscoll Gordon Kinney Kim Jones Gail Halon Leslie Guilmette Warren Simons Peter Bonin Making the mistake of asking an upperclassman where such and such a room was, there was many a time we ended up far from our appointed destination. Finally arriving at a distant room, a long way from where we thought it was, we were jabbed in the stomach with a small slip of paper stating the day and time that we were to report to the cafeteria for detention. With the teacher already wondering about our intelligence, the class began. — Then another, and another, and another — af- ter 330 class minutes, we learned that fascinating fact of rela- Edward Kulik 30 Don Webster Linda Cornwell Mark Fellows Laura Scott 31 tivity; though it ' s hard to find one ' s class in five minutes, it ' s easy to find the door in a second. Into the winter and through the spring we went: term papers, mid-terms, and hours of homework became daily routine until one 33 Kathryn Martin Charles Dempsey day we discovered we could count in German, although our accents were barely ac- ceptable; help Y and Z on their endless quest for X; work on a lab without ex- ploding the building; actual- ly move after PE — and find our way through the intrica- cies of library cataloging to any given book. Ah educa- tion! We even managed to Stewart Gray Diane Gagner Bill Lamoureaux Laurie Barton absorb the ridicule and scorn and threats of the upperclassmen and survive our freshman year. The best was still ahead. Strange as it may seem, that same man was standing there smiling as we entered for the second time around. Not as confused as last 34 time, we knew where to go but still had no idea what to Robert Christianson Regina Kurki Suzanne LaMountain Victoria Bailey Thomas Bradstreet Ronnie Kane 35 Greg Spaulding Shirley Maciaga Mike Goodrich I expect. Inside our new homeroom, we immediately received our forms and pa- pers to fill out, except this time we got them from a young, hustling student teacher who thought he owned the school. He brisk- ly recounted two old college stories, refused to let anyone visit Guidance, callously Bruce Westcott Suzanne Roy Bill Lessard 36 Robert Harrington Doreen Hess 37 V Mary McGowen Richard Moriarty Sandy Laudig hoped we’d have a good day, and moved us on. New faces, dif- ferent classes, but that same old routing was there. This was the year we really turned on to the library. Your permanent pass was your guide when xxx ' d by a teacher, you could use it to enter the library for the valuable period of fifteen Corrine Durham 38 Patricia Hafey Paul Teixeira Suzanne Jette Lynn Nuzzolilli John Winn DarfNadeau 39 minutes. A gracious lady guided the silent one to his favorite book or the gregari- ous soul out the door, whichever came first. It be- came a point of interest and a frequent sight to see var- ious individuals being es- corted from the library be- fore they had ever really gotten in. Along with the library, the guidance office Paul Brunelle Carole Small Paul Sibley V 40 Jane Hazen Jerry Reimers Donna Ouellette Terri Smith 41 ■ David Sutcliffe Joseph Grigley Pam Maybury Joan Dusenberry Linda Eastman march wa s inaugurated. Over-flowing with knowl- edge and helpful aids, it provided a desert oasis for those individuals who had planned a trip to the rest room, but were denied be- cause of the length of the waiting list. The proficient counselors did their best to inform you of job openings as experienced shepherds or 42 Laura Moore Linda Giallanza Donna Merrill Michael Harding ambidexterous croupiers, and made sure to fill you in com- pletely on some college in a remote town in the Black Hills of South Dakota. We were learning? ' Sophomore ' doesn’t mean ' wise fool’ without reason, you know but eventually we re- ceived our promotions to the eleventh grade. It may seem redundant, but that’s the way it was — that smil- ing man was standing there again. The teachers were the same and there were still forms to fill out, but something about being a junior made it a little better. We got the Wednesday morning lecture on responsibility, and asked each other why they didn’t just stick that talking box right up on the roof. There was a certain snobbish air about us as we relized we were now “on the program.” It was soon brought to our atten- tion that it was much easier to be “off the program” than on. 46 Cindy Jette David Kelly Joyce Ostrander Wendy Shaw Keith Stewart 47 but we paid no attention to such a remote possibility. The cafeteria studies and the battles for the ping-pong ball became a way of life, as familiar to us as our gym socks in March, but the lunch block auditorium study that was just too much to cope with. Of the seven hundred and something Bob Pagani Bonnie lllig Stephen Belch Ann Marie lllig Beverly Byrnes Fred Warren 48 Kevin Hand Jane Fontaine 49 seats, only about fifty were to be occupied. But the monitor made sure that we were not within twen- ty seats of anyone in any direc- tion. Having grown in maturity (some of us can vote), we realized that we now should have respect for the school and set an example for the underclassmen. So we simply raised heck; it wouldn’t be right to do it “exactly” the way Sandra Bliss Kurt Angelucci Linda Gebo Mark Barrepski Jane Patnode 50 David Schermerhorn Joanne DiAugustino PUbi_io L. Through the halls Anna Longo ■ Nancy Wilson Ken Hardy Connie Cushman Paul Nascimbeni Sanford Scharmer 52 Cheryl Langdon Helen Retynsky Joseph Marino Brian Peskin Kathy Runquist Lee Marino 53 Robert Montana Gina Mascaro we had carried pounds of books — and absorbed enough from them and from the millions of words of our rapidly tiring teachers to face PSAT’s with a certain amount of confidence and somehow we survived and when June rolled around we knew that it would soon be our turn to take over as se- niors. “Seniors”, what a thoughtljust to have the title attached to us was sobering. We were on top now; in command of the school. When we walked in the halls now the underclassmen didn’t exactly bow — but they didn’t trip us either. We would often be recognized — sometimes then we nodded. The “senior cafeteria became ours. The food was no better, but then nei- ther was the company. Going out to lunch or bringing back grinders became the big decision seniors had to face. Driving the car to school only to find a little OVERPARKED card on our windshields made us think twice about driving our cars to Julie Angers 58 W Sherry Couch Allan Scully Michelle Sullivan Fred Ernsting 59 David Shannon Joanne Peterson school. Then the gas went away, and the matter was academic anyways. The year went by with the thirty-one senior skip days (Don’t we wish but those 8:05’s on the homeroom teacher’s desk aren’t exactly comparable to winning the Mass, lottery). We’ll take the normal allotment of days actually being sick. Here we are — classes aren’t too formidable and we wouldn’t admit it if they were; SAT results are determining the dorm residencies of many of us, someplace jobs are waiting for oth- ers. Our harvest will be coming in — and we’ll be beginning again, somewhere else. Just for a while, however, we’re still on top; but there’s more of our season in the sun to come. 62 Martha Cantilini John Kiernan Sheila Valiiere 63 John Ascioti Karen Walker -Asia Nancy Paige Debbie Bourque Darryl Forsythe Debbie Waldroup Jay Pronicki Cindy LaBorde Andrew Bonacker Donna Fattini Ronald Doe Steve Mid wood Debbie MacLeod Judy Gunn Denise Bourque John Muscolo Senior Directory BILL ALDRICH DAVID ANDERSON Yearbook, 4: Photography Club, 3,4. The day-to-day drudgery of practice produced a powerful champion. Decimated by the powerful Spartan machine, the first seven opponents bowed four by the shutout route. The Spartans met their first real test as they entered the battle of the unbeatens against Minnechaug. Before an enthralled crowd, the Spartan offense burst through the Falcon defense in the first half and took a 27-7 lead. But the momentum shifted in the second half as Minnechaug caught the Spartans off guard and struck with the big play to tighten the score at 27-2 1 . The Spartans held on in the fourth quarter and added more points to complete the scoring at 33-21 . In the regular season finale, the Spartans faced a spirited Longmeadow team. The Spartan offense sputtered in the first half and only a strong defensive effort by the Spartans kept the score close at 7-0, Lancers. A rejuvenated Spartan team, lead by Rand Willard and Dave Tranghese, roared out in the second half and wiped out the Lancer upset hopes, 24-7. 76 Mineo, Tranghese, Willard, Kulik, Marino, McDyer Grab A 11-League Positions Mineo, Willard, Marino, McDyer Fill All-Western Mass. U nbeaten Mermen Swim to Title ) 94 ) unusual draw deprived the Lancers of gaining at least a tie for the division crown. East Longmeadow, the sole unbeaten team, at 10-0, faces a rematch with second place Cathedral (10-1), and this time the meet will be held at Linkletter Natatorium, also Tuesday. Spartan coach Dick Bolles has one division title to his credit in eight years, while the Panthers have emerged from the depths of oblivion the last two years to take Division C and B cham- pionships, respectively. The first meeting went to the Spartans, 46-37, but Cathedral coach Charlie Casserly felt they swam over their heads” in that one, ‘We’re making our move now,” he added. Bolles would like to win the title, noting it seems like we’re always second.” The teams are fairly equal in firepower but Bolles has been getting great results from two sophomores — Rick Parker and Steve Wiez- bicki — and he’s hoping they can pick up vitally needed points. Parker’s victories came in the 200 (1.57.7) and the 500 (5.21). Steve Wizbicki, Dave Taft and Steve Midwood joined Willard in the clinching relay victory. They were timed in 3.33. This also was a school record. It was the second league title for coach Dick Bolles’ mermen. 95 A Season of Surprises Despite the preseason outlook for the defending Valley Wheel Champs, and the lack of scoring punch due to graduation, the Spartans have performed admirably. Coach Modzelewski’s boys were not to retain the title, however. Using agility and hustle, the inexperienced Spartans were able to overcome the much larger teams. Some fine shooting by Capt. Tim Broderick, Rob Lieberwith, Ji-m Dunn, and Paul Pronicki aroused the fans. A tenacious Spartan defense, which consistently held opponents well below their scoring average, proved their key to victory. All in all, the hoop season was a “good effort. Suspensions and injuries resulted in the loss of Mike Daniele, Tony Trase, and Paul Sibley for periods of time. Due to sporadic and sluggish play the Spartans slid into a slump. Senior goalie, Kevin Silk, was often the only force keeping the Spartans in the game. Champ., the powers decided to engage in the battle of the year. E.L. and Pittsfield tangled for the championship berth. The first half found the Spartans in control with a 20-0 lead, but a great fourth quarter rally by Pittsfield ended the struggle in a 20-20 tie. Back to the rating system: E.L. got the nod. 1 n a superb defensive battle, highlighted by an array of incredible plays, the Algonquin team prevailed, 6-2. 146 Gridiron Banquet Fit for Champions 147 Sophomores Host Harvest Dance 148 149 Child Development: Project Nursery School E.L.H.S. offers a unique course to its upperclassmen and women to prepare them for the establish- ment of their own homes. Child Development was designed to develop a constructive relationship between parents and children. The girls involved in the course study child development from the prenatal stage to pre-adolescence. This year the class, prompted by Miss Chmielewski, eagerly invited some preschool children to their child development class. The girls made toys for the children to play with and some even brought gifts for them as Christmas presents. The girls in the two classes were separated into different groups. Each group had a job to do. There were games to be planned and refreshments to be made. A free play period was set up so that the children could get used to each other by associating with each other. Then they had group games and singing. This project worked out very well. Not only for the children, but for the students as well. It gave the girls a chance to observe w hat they had been studying about children’s behavior. It also allowed the girls to show what they had learned in the course. Speaking out for the students is the monumental job of its members. This year a massive candy sale was waged to raise money. Headed by Mr. Sarazin, the student government touches all aspects of student life, providing lunchroom control, aiding projects in financial distress, and co-sponsoring Spartanum. 158 Honor Society Those who are elite in the field of knowledge may enter the honor society. This wise group is guided by Mrs. Freed with Kim Wiezbicki as president. Although honor society members have special privileges to reward their superior intellectual performance, they quietly devote hours to tutoring students who are having temporary difficulty. A well-rounded group, honor society co-sponsors Spartanum each year with gusto. President Larry Bean and the members hope to raise money by picking up the fields after the cheering fans leave our sporting events. Lunchroom patrol demonstrates a school spirit- ed service activity of the varsity club. Debate Club “Poverty in the United States” is this year’s contro- versial topic from which will stem the rousing arguments of the EL debaters. Under the direction of Mr. McKinney, the varsity debaters, Glenn McRae, John Ferreira, Lisa Basile, and Kathy Eastman, hope to verbally assault and overcome their opponents. Eventually it hopes to provide a forum for the exchange of issues relevant to the problems facing America today. Meanwhile, Model Congress provides informed political citizens to increase the town voter list. 162 Math Club Headman Dick Burns looks for a great year from the mathematical wizards. Fred 84. 1 10 Thompson, Laura 1 10 White, John E. 229 This rowdy crew of misfits has worked all year long, following activities, chasing dow n names and attempting to put this volume together. The way to remember them is by their trademarks: Joey ' s crutches, Jackie ' s quick fingers, Jane ' s athletic aptitude, Lisa ' s limber limbs, Marty’s continual open house, Kathy’s Canadian dream, Helen’s works of art, Lynn ' s artistic achievements, Mike ' s hall passes, Pam’s many accomplishments, Jane ' s bearded buddy, Debbie ' s sloe sense of humor, Mary ' s Monty in the Hall, Maura ' s unusual experiences, Patti ' s garage bills, Linda’s extraordinary taste, Kim ' s whimsical wizardry, Timmy ' s corner seats. Pete ' s first annual, Tom ' s blushing beauty, Jo-Ann ' s “blondie,” Dave’s quick shutter. Debbi ' s silent manner, Mike ' s computations, Anne ' s many moods, Kathy ' s fickle flirtations, Ed ' s basket of gawoomkies, John ' s “Longmeadow chics, Rupert ' s “little donations, Scott ' s sexy legs, Brian ' s literary style, Blaine ' s demonic mind, Mike ' s guinea pig, Joey’s Three Little Bears, and last but not least, Maryellen ' s other (!) life. 230 This is the other side of the coin, the business staff. In the beginning of the year you probably saw them wandering from door to door trying to get some patrons. Then they changed roles, they began soliciting subscribers to help circulate this master- piece. Towards the end of the year they donned black masks and brass knuckles in order to gather the money from a few de- linquent debtors. So, many thanks to Betsy. Julie, Jean, Janet, Lori, Sue, Joy, John, Beth, Argira, Donna, Judy, Mary Alice, Linda, Colleen, Mike, .Nancy, Don. Ted, Paul and Eric. This is not primarily the place where we have to be it is the place where we are. This is not our prison but our home. It is the road we must walk and the walking of it is called life Because we will walk it only once, then how important it is that we should walk it with some purpose that we can call our own. A
