Board Certainly Not Bored This Year To members of the Board of Education was given a heavy responsibility: the education of 5,300 students, the welfare of 220 employees, maintenance of l9 schools, etc. To these jobs was added the task of constructing another school building. The board gave willingly of its time to accomplish these duties. Their big ac- complishment in i954 was the opening of the new East Junior High School with its improved opportunities. Ralph W. Betts, superintendent of all East Liverpool schools, was principal of our high school from l943 to l95l and then became superintendent. This year Mr. Betts served on the Board of Directors of the Community Fund, Red Cross, and Chamber of Commerce, on the Official Board of the First Christian Church and was an active participant in the Workshop for Superintendents at Kent State U. r AST l2

Principal Heads Alma Mater This popular figure, often seen during school hours, was our well-known principal, Mr. George Hargraves. A native of East Liverpool, he attended Garfield Grade School, and was graduated from East Liverpool High School and Ohio State Univer- sity, where he received his BSC, and M.A. degrees. Mr, Hargraves taught at several of the grade schools and was principal of Lincoln and Washing- ton. The ELHS principal was often heard to say, lt has been a very pleasant experience to return to my home school and to work with the students and faculty here. Many present members of the sfaff helped me get started in the right direction, and l know our entire staff is anxious to do the some for students today, l believe we have a good School, l am certain we will be able to make it a better one in the future. cn. Miss Ruth Sloan, Dean of Girls, greeted the girls with a pleasant and happy smile to give advice to those who needed guidance. She attended Muskin- gum and Geneva College, the University of Pitts' burgh, and Northwestern. Although quite busy with checking the girls' attendance, she still had time to sponsor Hi-Tri and Student Council. Mr. Bert Dawson, with a lively sense of humor, greeted the boys who needed assistance. Kenyon and the University of Pittsburgh schooled him, Mr. Dawson took time to sponsor the Magazine Sale, Potter Police, and Student Council. He also handled boys' attendance.
