The story concerns a soldier, Nathaniel Coombes, played by Harold Butt, who was killed in the Revolutionary War while trying to deliver a message. He became a ghost--doomed to linger around the place where he had been killed. As the play opens, Nancy Willard, played by Nancy Mc Donald, inherits Nathaniel Coombes from Miss Bullock, who was the only person who could communicate with Nathaniel. When she died, she left Nathaniel to Nancy to straighten out her life. Instead, the ghost complicates it by falling in love with Nancy who is engaged to Parker Burnett, Jim MacDonald. Everyone except Charley Stewart, a newspaper man, played by Brian Elmer, thinks Nancy is drunk when she sees ghosts. Irv and Rocky, John Howell and Tom Dietrich, are ghosts who try to get Nathaniel into Heaven by appealing to General Washington, Finally they receive a decision that Nathaniel can enter Heaven if he digs up the message and gives it to a descendant of the person to whom he was supposed to deliver it. Charley fulfills these requirements, the descendant being Parker Burnett, The spell is broken, Nathaniel goes to Heaven, and Charley marries Nancy in a happy ending, Margaret Collins, Miss Bullock's housekeeper, was Barbara Reineke.
