'f CLASS OF '54 Well, Lord Trojan of Troy, to begin your visit to East Lansing from the past, you are going to have the chance now to relive the story ofone of the great- est classes in E.L.H.S.'s history, the Class of '54. lt was six, long, eventful years ago that this ener- getic group of Trojans signed the register at E.L.H.S. The progress that they have made is quite evident today. They began their first year under the leadership of Charles McCaffree, Fred Wagner, Nancy McDonald, and .Tim Faust. The first year faded into the next, and they found themselves in the eighth grade working under the guidance of Charles McCaffree once again, along with Bob Powell, Marcia Grimes, and Mari- lou Mausteller. Junior High was soon just a memory, and there was something much bigger to look forward to. The class of '54 met their first social obligations in Sen- ior High by giving their Freshman dance, Bums De- light, and a square dancing Christmas party. ln the field of school government, Joe Sherman and Steve Lamphear represented their class in Student Council, and the officers who so ably led the class through this yearlwere Bob Perry, Bob Powell, Janice Noble, and Marilou Mausteller. The old earth took another twirl and they were back again, this time as a Sophomore Class. The ideals of this class were expressed to the Student Council by Marilou Mausteller and Steve Lamphear. They were not to be outdone in the field of sports, Phil Wood and Steve Lamphear were on the varsity football team, while Charles McCaffree reported 'to the varsity basketball squad, and Bob Perry was a second year varsity man in golf. The highlights of the year from the social point ofviewwere the Holly Hop and the annual Soph Prom, Sous l'eau, French for under water, Guiding the class were JoeSherman, Janice VanDerJagt, Kathryn Hildebrand, and John Winburne, Fall came around again and they returned, this year as Juniors. To start the year off, Steve Lamp- hear served as vice-president on the Student Coun- cil with Donna Reuling, Brian Elmer, Tom Kerrey, and Phil Wood representing the class. The fairer sex took over the leadership of the class this year with Marilou Mausteller as Madam President. Working along with her were Bob Powell, Kathryn Hildebrand, and Bill Roy, The Junior boys were found partici- pating enthusiastically, not only in football a.nd bas- ketball, but also in tennis, track, golf, wrestling, and baseball. The social light shone on the attractivel- Hop, On The Town, on February 21, and on April 9 and 10, the curtain rose on the Junior play, Our Miss Brooks, the first successful two night comedy. Climaxing the prosperous year was the annua1Junior- Senior Banquet on J une 4. Once again summer faded into autumn, and old E.L.H.S. opened her doors to welcome the Class of '54 back again. They entered proudly, bearing the long-envied title of Seniors. The quartet of officers chosen to lead them through their final year were Don Young, Bud Young, Janice VanDerJagt, and Kathryn Hildebrand. Standing by with a helping hand and good advice were Miss Stophlet and Mr. Pulley, the class advisors. Steve Lamphear took over the leadership of Student Council, assisted by Barbara Kohl and Brian Elmer, plus an underclassman.Representing theclass were Don Young, Donna Reuling, Marilou Mausteller, Lew Kerans, Dave Dethmers, and Brian Elmer. The Senior boys made a fine showing in the sports world all year. The highlight of the football season was the Homecoming Dance. Found reigning over the gala event were Queen Janice Noble and King Steve Lamp- hear. On November 13 and 14 the Class of '54 pre- sented the highly successful Senior Play, Gramercy Ghost, under the direction of Mr. Richard. Themain goal of this class was to earn money and a few of their projects were, the magazine drive, paper drive, rum- mage sale, and the Sock Hop, At last their goal was reached and the Senior Trip was underway. The three day cruise on the Great Lakes with stops at Chicago and Mackinac Island was well worth allthehard work. The last big social affair was the Senior Prom on May 23. White dinner jackets, swirling formals, and colorful flowers set the stage for the most wonder- ful dance of the year. Bringing their high school careers to a close were the Junior-Senior Banquet, Baccalaureate, and finally, Commencement. Now, Lord Trojan, don't you agree, after hear- ing their history, that the Class of '54 has comea long way since their first year at East Lansing High School? With a twinge of regret they are leaving these hallowed halls now, yet they will never forget the six happy years spent here. As the Class of '54 goes out into the world as young men and women, they will look back on their high school days at East Lansing with fond memories and afeeling of gratitude for the part it played in their lives. Tony Trojan occupied a front row seat at Gramercy Ghost , this year's Senior Play, which was presented November 13 and 14 under the direction of Mr. Richard. The story concerns a soldier, Nathaniel Coombes, played by Harold Butt, who was killed in the Revolutionary War while trying to deliver a message. He became a ghost--doomed to linger around the place where he had been killed. As the play opens, Nancy Willard, played by Nancy Mc Donald, inherits Nathaniel Coombes from Miss Bullock, who was the only person who could communicate with Nathaniel. When she died, she left Nathaniel to Nancy to straighten out her life. Instead, the ghost complicates it by falling in love with Nancy who is engaged to Parker Burnett, Jim MacDonald. Everyone except Charley Stewart, a newspaper man, played by Brian Elmer, thinks Nancy is drunk when she sees ghosts. Irv and Rocky, John Howell and Tom Dietrich, are ghosts who try to get Nathaniel into Heaven by appealing to General Washington, Finally they receive a decision that Nathaniel can enter Heaven if he digs up the message and gives it to a descendant of the person to whom he was supposed to deliver it. Charley fulfills these requirements, the descendant being Parker Burnett, The spell is broken, Nathaniel goes to Heaven, and Charley marries Nancy in a happy ending, Margaret Collins, Miss Bullock's housekeeper, was Barbara Reineke. Judy Harris played Miss Bullock's attorney, Augusta Ames. Officer Morrison was played by Charley Mc Caffree. Suzanne Meyer and Sherry Kiepert were ambulance driversg Nancy Gordon was a girl ghost, and Phoebe, Officer Morrison's wife, was played by Ann Tukey. As you know, the Class of '55 will enter East Lansing next year as Seniors, and, look- ing back at this successful year, they certainly are well 'prepared for it. The leaders they chose to guide their class were Bob Edwards, Peggy Holcomb, Mary Hayhoe, and Tim Kraft. Their views on student government were well presented to the Student Coun- cil by Vice-President Bob Elliott, Bob Edwards, Judy Green, Dave McCaffree, Jean McElroy, and Nelda Trout. Keeping their goal, the Senior Trip, in mind, these Juniors worked enthusiastically throughout the year on the magazine drive, hour dance, concessions, and their paper drive. The boys took an active part in football, basketball, baseball, wrestling, tennis, track, and golf, while the girls were found partici- pating in various clubs and organizations. effectively carried out by exotic murals and orien- tal lanterns, and it is needless to say that a good time was had by all, The footlights shone on the talent of the Junior Class on the evenings of April 9 and 10, when they presented their play, The Cuckoo on the Hearth. This successful mystery comedy was under the di- rection of Mr. Warren Richard, along with assist- ant director Peggy Holcomb and assistant producer John Lundberg. It's too bad you missed the climax of this event- ful year, Lord Trojan, the Junior-Senior Banquet held on J une 10, because I'm sure you would have en- joyed it. The Class of '55 is, of course, grateful for the advice and help given them by Miss Newhouse and Mr, Smith, the class sponsors. And now that you have heard their history, don't you agree, Lord Trojan, that if they continuenext year as they have in the past, the Class of '55 will be an 628, 53,3 03.5-5 510,21 0 Q.4-w-N21 355 E522 Q-iv' 9525. 09.1- a.w4,l,gP, , ,EEST-Q' fYxA.fL,'c7 Q' 592. gm jL,a..x1If'f-1-f4T -4-'5 ::'? ai- r EEZ :ga C.f'a,f1s.J gg-Q n:f,o-gona-4,Zf09h 92 Kl 8LQF6 ei ffvv-406 E-Q j ,lg . The student leaders of the class this year were Bill Cutler, John Kerrey, Emily Derr, and DianeDen- nington. Their views on school affairs were brought to the student council by Bill Cutler, Doug Smith, Scott Herrick, and Ed Reuling. Always on hand to offer their help and advice were the class sponsors, Miss Thelen, Mr. Ganakas, and Mr. Meulendyke. But they certainly havedone an excellent job of organizing it, don't you think? This was not the only successful money-making project of the Class of '57, They made a fine showing in the magazine drive, bake sales, and the highlight of the year, the Fresh- man dance Bum's Rush , a hard times sockhop held on January 8. The main attraction of the decorations was a huge tramp and his dog inthe center of the gym along with tin cans and the kids dressed in old clothes and socks to effectively carry out the theme. The year was not all fun, though, for the Class of '57 worked very hard in the field of school govern- lewd ment. They were ably guided in this field by Todd Rueling, ,Tack Klewicki, Susan Powers, and Marylean Campbell, their class officers. The Freshmen were well represented in Student Council by Paul Keeslar. and Susan Skarstad. In addition to this, they organized an Advisory Board composed of fifteen members whose main purpose was to deal with class problems. All in all, the first year in Senior High was very successful for the Class of '5'7. Part of this is due to the fact that they had extremely helpful class spon- sors, Mrs. Grim, Mr. Casebere, and Mr.Stowe. What- ever the reason, let's hope that their enthusiasm and school spirit continues throughout their high school careers. fbawpe , . x x fr? h my ' l T 1 X -0- FFP . , ai as Sl Mary Abra ha m 373 ' sg.. 53' . Diane was born May 19, 1938, and died September 25, 1953, while cheering her team on to victory. It is with much sorrow that her friends continue on through high school without her. Now for those who were her best friends, and those who only knew her name, you and I present our sympathy, ftgsg Sl , 5,5 Yw 0 X I? s SW 'Es , , X Q I am -if CLASS OF '58 I see you're reading the latest edition of the Junior Hi Roundup, Lord Trojan, or should I use your new nickname Tony? Anyway, these eighth graders are pretty good newspaper men and women, don't you think? This class paper is only an example of the success the class of '58 had in its second year at East Lansing. Starting the year off, they elected David Clana- han, Russel Kropschot, Janet Gibson, and John Mason as their class officers. They made themselves heard in Student Council through David Clanahan, Jane Mc- Cann, and Jerry Peters. The eighth graders worked energetically all year on the magazine drive, after- school sales, and in various clubs and other acti- vities. They kept step with the social activities during the year too, starting out with their gala December party, Winter Wonderland. March 5 found them attending Pacific Paradise, with palm trees, flow- ers and sport clothes carrying out thetheme. There was a lot of hard work in both events, but the re- wards were worth it. Working hand in hand with the class were Mrs. Meulendyke, Mrs. Cann, and Mr, Tanzer, the class sponsors. The Class of '58 did have quite a success- ful year, didn't they, Tony? If they keep up the good work, they'll make a fine showing in their first year in Senior High. vlfglf, I P qw Yxxs Q 9 xft 3 of. ' X ' . I WA L J.. :KRW '13-is-.. Marian Adair X . Starting the year off under the guidance of Mr. Budde, Mr. Worden, and Mr. Sullivan, the class sponsors, they held their first big school election. The results were as follows: President, Warren Wagner, Vice-President, SharonTurk,Secre- tary, Zaiga Kuze, and Treasurer, Dave Kinner- son. ln addition to choosing their first class officers, they appointed Bob Turley and Marcia Van Der Jagt to represent them on Student Coun- cil- ' his Q9 63' ll An example of their ambitious nature and also of their desire to start earning money for that all impor- tant Senior trip was the Junior HighRoundup , This was the successful Junior High Newspaper edited co- operatively by the seventh and eighth grades. In addition to these, there were many other acti- vities and sports to keep the class active all year. The year was not all work and no play, though, for on November 6, a delightful evening was spent at a party given by the P.T.A. Following this was the annual seventh grade party on April 23, a gala affair indeed. Well, Tony, it was quite a year for these up-and-com- ing Trojans, wasn't it? And if they continue as they have this year, there is no doubt that the class of '59 will make quite a name for thenselves at E.L.H.S. 4 A fi' :Mit 19 X , ll Ol Josephine Abra ham if Gary Barnard V- mu ,. , ,V , , 1 5 , If Gary Bennett 'lu' , fV , hy , mr ' , Roger Brown ff iv 45 W ' f , 7, .' This year's varsity football team under the reins of Coach Albert Pat Peppler had an average record consisting of 4 wins and 4 setbacks. Although having an average slate, the team was much better than the record shows. The season was a story of ups and downs. The Trojans tied for fourth place in the Twin Valley League with 3 wins and 3 losses. The team split a pair of non-conference games with Mt. Pleasant and Brighton. East Lansing opened the season with a 2nd half loss to Mt. Pleasant, a top class B team in the state. The team returned home to lose in the last 45 seconds to Marshall. The Trojans got on the winning side of the column witha solid win over Adrian and in turn were drubbed by Albion. After winning three in a row from Coldwater, Sturgis, and Brighton, respectively, they lost a close and exciting contest to Battle Creek Lakeview, the Twin Valley champs. Tony Trojan enjoyed all the games. Coach Peppler received very able assistance from Mr. Meulendyke, backfield coach, and Mr. Ganakas, reserve coach. They also shared the scouting duties. Seniors who are graduating and will be sorely missed next year are Bob Powell, Phil Wood, George Spanos, Lew Kerans, Bob Distel, Tom Kerrey, Don Shepard, Steve Lamphear, Bob Perry, Dave Mc Conkey, Don Young, Dick McCarty, and Jim Atkinson. Making the all conference team were George Spanos on defense and Steve Lamphear on offense. In addition, Ken Slotnick and Phil Wood received honorable mention. LEW KERANS - Guard Lew played one of the most important posi- tions on the team, a pulling guard, His blocking moved many of the opponents out of the way during the year. BOB POWELL - End Bob was East Lansing's signal caller this year and was avery capable field general. His steady pass-catching pulled the Trojans out of many holes. Bob was selected for the first Lansing All- City Team ever as- sembled. BOB PERRY - Quarterback In East Lansing's offense the quarterback is OHS Of the key blockers. Bob filled the spot effectively Bild Was the reason for many Trojan gains last fall. PHIL WOOD - Tackle A stalwart in the Trojan line for two years, Phil was always a rough-tough type of a player. ' STEVE LAMPHEAR Fullback - Co-Captain Steve was one fo the most consis- tent performers on East Lansing's team and also a valuable team player, The Trojan's opponents always dreaded the time when Steve would carry the ball. He was highly honored in his Senior year by being placed on the All- Conference Offensive Team and also on several All-State Teams. DICK MCCARTY- Tackle BOB DISTEL-Center Bob's steady play was noticeable all season, especially when the going w as toughest. His team spirit was an important factor in many games. DON SHEPARD-End Don improved rapidly during the s e ason, and when it ended he had contributed great- ly to the Trojan cause. His blocking opened many holes in the opponent's line, Dick was another player who saw limited action, mainly because this was the first year he had participated in the sport. Given more time, he would have gone far. RESERVE FOOTBALL FIRST ROW: J, Stanley, J. Robson, R, Distel. SECOND ROW: J, Kerrey, T, Turk, A, Mellios, D. Finley, T, Grimes, E, Reuling, D, Smith. In the 1953-54 season the Trojan basketball team, ably led by coach Gus Ganakas, finished with a mediocre record of 4 victories and ll defeats, The team was many times out-rebounded and out-shot, mainly due to the lack of height, but they were seldom out-fought. The Trojans finished sixth in the Twin-Valley, made possible by a strong, late season finish, in which they won two out of their last three games. The team got off to a poor start by dropping six straight contests before they came up with two straight wins, over Adrian and Albion. The Trojans again got in a rut and fell short on their next four attempts before putting on their late spurt, Charles McCaffree was the team's leading scorer with a total of 135 points. Graduating seniors who will be sorely missed next year are: Charles McCaffree, Bob Powell, Bob Distel, Ron Hill, Bob Wenner, and team managers Tom Searl and Gordon Gainer. Led by Coach Pat Sullivan, the grapplers coasted to victories over Lansing Everett and Cranbrook, but lost a close match to Jackson. The Trojans ran into stern compe- tition when they were pinned by Lansing Eastern, a top state power, but turned the tables by defeating Lansing Sexton, defending state champions, in the last match of the season. Top individual performances were turned in by Bruce Blakeslee at 138 lbs., Steve Lamphear at 165 lbs., and Phil Wood at 175 lbs. Late in March, East Lansing enters the state wrestling tournament and should be the top Class B Team in the event. George Spanos, Phil Wood, Don Young, Tom Dietrich, Steve Lamphear and John Howell will be conspicuously absent from next year's team, due to graduation. E. Nedelman, Tony Trojan saw the links-men roll to an undefeated 53 season. Ably coached by Mr, Sullivan, they stroked out decisive margins over their foes in all seven dual matches, The four veterans of the team were Arnold Nedelman, John Abbott, Bob Perry, and Fred Wagner, All four lettermen are returning and the Trojans have their eye on the State Class B Championship. The Trojan golfers placed second in both the Twin Valley and the Regionals this year, They were the sixth best class B team in the state. Arnold Nedelman was runner-up to the medalist in the State Finals with a sparkling 77 over a tough Jackson Cascades course. There are quite a few reserves who backed up the varsity golfers this year. This should mean good teams in the future. The East Lansing tennis team, tuider the able direction of Mr. Worden, fought their way to a fine 1953 season, just ask Tony Trojan, The Trojans played six out of ten matches with Class A schools. The racquet-swingers lost twice to Hamtramck, perennially the strongest team in the state, and twice to Owosso, also a tennis-minded school. Other opponents were Lansing Sexton, Midland, Adrian, and Battle Creek Lakeview. Our team was composed mostly of seniors. Don Smith, Tom Masters, Jim Leigh, and Bill Clifford played singles. ,Tack Peters, Dick Hanna, Mike I ones, and ,T oe Robert were doubles men. The only returning lettermen are Ron Hill and J ack Gardner, both of the singles department. The high point of the season was the regionals, where East Lansing took first place with a total of 125 points. Jim Leigh won singles honors, while ,Tack Peters and Dick Hanna fought their way to the doubles title. All in all the season was quite a success for Mr. Worden's boys. The 1953 baseball team ended the year of 5 wins and 9 losses in a very interesting season . . , and Tony witnessed every game. Coach Peppler's charges showed promise on various occas- ions during the rugged schedule. Mainly behind Denny Rosenbrook's pitching, the Trojans finished third in the final Twin Valley standings with a 4 and 3 showing. East Lansing began the season on the wrong foot with a 4-0 loss to Eastern, a Class A school. Jumping into the Twin Valley, the team whipped Marshall 6-1, Three Rivers 2-O, and Adrian in a closely fought battle, 1-O, The Trojan victors set the stage for a showdown battle with a power- ful Battle Creek Lakeview nine. The underdog East Lansingites fought an uphill battle only to have Lakeview salvage a 5-4 victory. Not fully recovered, East Lansing fell to Sturgis and was shut out by Albion 5-0. The season finale found the Trojans sneaking past Lansing Sexton in an 8-7 contest. Lettermen which will bolster this year's team are Ken Slotnick, Bob Distel, Bob Powell, Ron Atkinson, Steve Lamphear, and George Spanos. VARSITY TRACK FIRST ROW: F. Gordon, D. McCaffree, O. Derr, E. The East Lansing Trojans won their first track meet in 4 years, solidly trouncing Holt 96-13, and on top of that, finished a very fine season with a record of 3 wins and a loss in dual meet competition. The victorious track team finished 4th in the Albion Invitational and 3rd in the Twin Valley Meet. ln his first year Coach Wayne Tinkle conscientiously tutored East Lansing to victorious heights on the track field. In addition to the fine team strength, the Trojans sprint medley team, consisting of Dick Riggs, Bob Riggs, Charlie McCaffree, and Bob Elliott, set a school record when they ran the event in 2:32.3, All through the year the standout performers were the sprint men, Bob Elliott, John Schell, Bob Riggs, and Dick Riggs. Doug Ousterhout did a fine job rtmning the hurdles and will be missed next year. All the Seniors were extremely valuable to the team and will leave a big hole in the lineup, but most of the members of the team were undergraduates and therefore East Lansing will be looking forward to another successful season in 1954.
