1899 1949
The year 1949 marks the 50th Anniversary of the founding of
the first public high school in East Huntingdon Township. This was
also the first rural high school in the state of Pennsylvania.
The grade school building in Alverton was selected to accom-
modate the high school students because this was really an experi-
ment in rural education.
This same building is used today for the vocational shop and
home economics departments.
The early courses consisted of advanced academic subjects and
were completed in three years. The first year of the school's exis-
tence, one teacher taught all subjects. However, as the classes in-
creased, more teachers were employed with one of them acting as
principal.
Several of these early teachers were: O. H. Strawbridge, Wil-
liam Thompson, and P. D. Rhinehart.
The first graduating class of East Huntingdon Township had
four members: Birdie Byers, Tillie Hunker, Walter Stoner, and George
Lowe.
?
1899
1919
The high school classes soon proved to be so popular among
the citizens of our township that it was necessary to separate the high
school from the grade school students.
Funds were soon collected for a large, modern building. It was
finally decided to erect the new school across the road from the old
grade school.
This structure was completed in 1900. It was made of red brick
and contained four large class rooms and an oHice.
Much credit must be given to the members of the school board
who undertook this task. These members were: Mentor Gainey, John
K. Fox, Byron Kelley, Michael Mathias, J. J. Houser, and W. O. Cowan.
The curriculum was expanded to include a commercial course
and music. The graduating class of 1925 had 33 members, and the
three underclasses averaged 50 members each. There were seven
faculty members all holding college degrees.
Extra curricular activities that year included: Webster and
Sumner Debating Societies, Glee Club, Library, Class Plays, Radio
Club, Yearbook, Orchestra, and Football.
By 1925 this school had reached its capacity, so it was decided
to build a larger, more up-to-date high school.
Now this old school serves as a grade school building but East
Huntingdon graduates from 1900 to 1925 still call it "Alma Mater."
3
1899 1949
The present high school was started in the spring of 1924 and
opened in the fall of 1925. The school board who authorized this was:
Austin Taylor, John Ritchie, D. F. Cowan, E. C. Null, F. C. Dell,
George S. Hixson, and J. Henry Bair.
The new high school was built in the most modern style. It
contains a large gym, showers and dressing rooms, auditorium, cafe-
teria, library, offices, science laboratory, and modern class rooms.
Recently an electric bell system, intercommunication, and pub-
lic address system have been added.
In 1930 the school was reorganized into a six-year high school.
In 1930 the first buses were used for transporting all pupils. The
vocational agriculture course was added to the curriculum in 1928, in
1930 the shop course was added and in 1932 the home economics de-
partment was also made a part of the high school courses.
The graduating class of 1949 has seventy-one members. The
total present high school enrollment is five hundred and twenty-five.
Today's faculty includes nineteen teachers, a school nurse, school
secretary, high school principal and supervising principal.
As we look at our high school achievements, we can truly say
that East Huntingdon Township is still interested in progressive rural
education. Our aim has always been to help our school live up to its
motto: "Second to None."

ALMA MATER
In the Allegheny mountains,
Whe1'e our forefathers carrie before,
Stands our dear Alma Mater,
Whose name we will always adore.
She's a good school and a sure school,
And her vict'1'ies have only begun:
For your fairness and fame we will honor y
For we love you, East Huntingdon.
East Huntingdon, East Huntingdon,
East Huntingdon for evermore!
You're our dear Township High School,
Whose name we will always adore.
When we've all gone from our school-days,
And our work in the world has begun,
We will think of our foster Mother.
And days at East Huntingdon.
Then we'll know the cause of our vict'ries,
And for all of the battles we've won:
It's the school of our youth with her honor
And we love you East Huntingdon.

The Junior Class of 1949 have proved them-
selves to be an ambitious and enthusiastic group.
Last year they came into their own as sopho-
mores. Their big social event then was the Val-
entine party. Near the end of the year they took
part in the operetta, "Oh Doctor." Several
sophomores had major parts in this and many
served as chorus members.
As Juniors they have set a fast pace. This
class is well represented both on the gridiron and
basketball court. They have three members on
the cheerleading squad. Their Class Play, "Mrs
Plaster of Paris," was a great success. The cli-
max of their Junior year comes with the Prom
given in honor of the Seniors.
Now they are looking ahead to a bright fu-
ture next year with new thrills, dances in their
honor, and their long-awaited graduation.

Anytime we Seniors get too deeply involved in our chemistry
and geometry problems, we pause for a minute and listen. What do
we hear? It's the light-hearted, carefree laughter of the Sophomores.
Their merriment came to a grand climax with the annual Val-
entine party. It was a gala affair. What a night of fun was rolled into
this social event.
Never could we be without these happy Sophs. At pep rallies,
in the game, or even in the classroom, their unending enthusiasm and
energy are sure to keep everyone's spirits high. You've really got what
it takes, Sophsg and here's to your future success!

Craig, and Miss Bair. Mr. Crawford.
"I wonder where room 9 is?" questioned Nancy Hepler.
"We've been on two floors and we still can't find it," chimed
Virginia Stoner and Joan Myers.
Yes, these were the statements of seventh graders who had just
begun their great exciting step of entering a new life in the high
school building. They soon became accustomed to their surroundings
and acquaintances.
The eighth graders just stand back and laugh at these bewild-
ered "greenies." They recall their actions of a year before. They are
veterans now. The eighth graders have already established a name
for themselves by their last year's records. They know the ropes and
can start working their way up the ladder.
This year the freshmen consider themselves the seniors of the
junior high classes. They have representatives in every field: operet-
ta, band, football, basketball, and intramurals. Also, they deserve
credit for supporting the magazine sale.
Here's to all these future seniors of E. H. H. S.
The 9th Grade Sponsors: Miss Boretsky, Mr.
