Until 1851 they called their settlement Prairie Rapids. In 1851, when the post otiice was established, the citizens christened the Waterloo, for they predicted it was to be the scene of a great yictory. Even before floors were laid in the loq cabins, circuit riders held services in them. In 1856, the first church building was constructed and be- came the meeting place ot several denominations. Spiritual values are important at East High, too. Each year the Nativity proves one of the most popular productions to the students Who present it and to the audience that crowds the auditorium. Solo and choral interpretations of Christmas hymns lend background to the tableaux on staqe and combine to create a memorable mood. INDUSTRY FINDS RULE IN SCIIUDI.. Main street of the l87O's is difficult to recognize as the pioneer ancestor of Fourth Street. Today multi-storied structures with modern facades replace the one story, Wooden buildings. Flashy convertibles at parking meters supplant horses and buggies at the hitching posts. Business on main street and industry in outlying areas have expanded until Waterloo now ranks as the number one industrial city in Iowa and is equaled by only 18 other cities west of the Mississippi River. Recognizing this, East High offers a broad vocational program to supplement the aca- demic courses. ,fn rg-V 33, X .qju .K Q . S n . ..-,ttf Ski ls X. . SX: Q... N XXXTY XX XX . Following a long controversy, Waterloo won the honor of becoming the seat ot the county government, and the courthouse Was ordered con- structed on the East side. Built the following year, it stood until 1907, When the present structure re- placed it. Every day students at East participate in student government. Student council committees working with students and teachers strive to make East High a democratic school. This year a major project has been the school-Wide citizenship committee drive to promote scholarship. DEVELOPING UUE RESOURCES yy gllffffW 44 Waterloo's location in a rich agricultural area encouraged the development of agrarian in- dustries. As transportation expanded, the town became a railroad division point, providing additional employment. School Work a century ago centered mainly around the three Pt's. As more students re- mained in school the educational program ex- panded to meet their varied needs. At East a wide selection of classes and activities gives students a chance to explore their abilities and develop latent talents. s X 'G Q N Xs is x x X f is Q. F ff QF' . Musicians Vary Repertoire The marching band added sparkle to half-time as it appeared in an original show at each home football game and provided melody between halves on the West High and Fort Dodge fields. The concert band made three appearances during the season. These programs included a Christmas auditorium given for the student body, the second annual Pops concert and the music festival in May. The festival once again combined the East and West bands to form one massed organization under the baton of Paul Yoder. Upper: Band, ten-tion! is a fa- miliar call from Drum Majors S. Zegarac and M. TAKING OUR CENSUS ii Seven hundred fourteen people comprised the population of Waterloo in 1855. By the turn of the century the number had reached l2,500. Since then Waterloo has grown steadily. Today the community of scholars at East has a population exceeding the city total of 1855. The graduating class has grown from two in 1877 to 2.72 this year. Iust as Waterloo has become known as the industrial leader of Iowa, East has gained distinction ,as the school that leads. Individual Guidance Orients Students LAWRENCE GARLOCK Vice-principal, Social Studies CHARLES L. HOFFMAN Principal Administering a high school efficiently and sympathetic- ally requires skill and understanding. East's administra- tion exercises balance and foresight in meeting student needs and holding high standards. The friendly student counselors, with the assistance of faculty members, help Eastonians select the high school courses most beneficial to them. Through individual coun- seling, the student is made to feel that he is important to the school as a whole. Faculty interest in student affairs, as evidenced by the attitude of East's teachers, helps make East High the Home of Champions. The three hundred sixty- one students who enrolled last tall came from Logan Iunior High and McKinstry lunior High, the two new schools which replaced the old East Iunior High last year. These sophs have displayed marked talent in many fields. Their varied abilities have received recognition in musical events, athletic competition and scholastic achieve- ments.
