As the golden leaves of autumn began to fall, high school youth returned once again from carefree summer vacations to the halls of East High prepared to begin another year filled to the brim with study and activity. We remember the first few exciting days trying to become used to the idea of being inside all day and getting back into the habit of study. With the first nip of ,lack Frost in the air came the thrilling football games. The stands were always crowded with familiar plaid shirts and long-tasseled stocking caps. Our spirits soared as we cheered our Trojans to victory. We remember the homecoming festivities. the all-school play, where a bit of Shakespeare was tried, and the climax of the football season, the cver-thrilling East-West galne. Another busy year was in full swing! . 1, 1-i if .V , 1.4 ,, -:FJ I Q sg . rx ,r .QQg5::hum:.,y'gif1lg, .fiifi I 44 , .fx , I .v W I J. fi- V ' '59 X E ' ka' W1 0 4 f ' .Fit Q 'Ki i'gQvQ,ff11'?4 .f 1 li' ' f' V X f aa: , 2.11 -Q ' 1 - ' ' 'A 'itll' H l VI 1 15 fa:-I, K- f ll t ' :FEV Sj: AfH3'i5ii'i:i L 1. For Brawn and Beaut Boys' gym classes this year have been focused around the many changing and ever popular seasonal sports. Football and soccer hcld the limelight during the fall term while basketball. volley- ball. boxing. wrestling and swimming were attractions this winter. Track and baseball complete our cycle for the school year and come forward with a bang as the fellows let out all that extra vigor which has been piling up during the zero months. Aside from keeping the boys up to par on all the rules and regulations of the various games on the sports calendar. Wlr. Stavcn- hagen. boys' physical training director. does a line job in promoting an appreciation of the value of clean play and good sportsmanship in all of his classes. I'nder the rigorous but excellent training of Nliss Anna Mae Wack. we had a girls' foot- ball lcanl. well. sort of: yes. soccer ball is quite a game. Along with soccer. in the fall, we had plenty of muscle-straining exercises. Then old man winter chased the girls inside for four months of hibernation. During the winter season. basketball played an important part in the girls' gym classes. While repairs were being completed on the gym floor. archery was the center of attention. Spring is here at last. Now for a good soft ball game. But that isn't all we had for ex- citement. Other activities offered were volley- ball. tennis. track and golf. No school would be complete without its champion swimmers. Along with the regular swimming classes, as an added attraction. two swimming meets were held. Taking part in these meets was our own school and for com- petitors West High girls participated. Twelve of our girls took the life saving course thc past year under the supervision of Nliss Wack. Sometimes the basketball games in tht boys' gym classes develop into l'k'Q1lllAll free-for-alls. .20. xlIlilll'lll' physirists I'XIlt'l'lllll'llllllQI with H'I'lIl-. liiology stullvnts gatln-r arountl ohilt- Miss X vhna Ohh-r slltllks the-m sonu- inte-rvsting spe-m'inn-n- whit-In stutlvnts han- lvronght in. xpo ing the 0h cure Moms. protons. vlt-vtrons arc- prominvnt in our thinking today. As the fluffy snowflakes came sifting down to cover the earth with a glisten- ing white blanket, we East High students donned our winter logs and hurried off to school. the the We the Sometimes our busses were stalled, or those of us who drove in from country fought a losing battle with the drifts. Then we descended on attendance office for admits and scurried breathlessly to classes. Basketball games were the highlight of our winter sports season. all looked forward to the pep auditoriums and then anxiously awaited sight of the Trojans fighting it out on the hardwood court. Our clubs, too, were claiming many of our leisure hours, for we found in them opportunities to experiment in developing the talents we boped we possessed. But we were pursuing more than merely activities. Both in and out of the classroom we were gathering the knowledge and understanding essential to our success in this new atomic age. a . .,,, 3' -4 .- 'V 1 1. After a somewhat irregular season we found we had won nine games and lost seven- teen. We tripped both Cedar Falls and West High by a narrow margin and scored wins twice over Fort Dodge. These four games provided the highlights for our fans. Our big seven were always in there pitch- ing and getting blisters on their feet from the hardwood. Wayne Seidler threw a jinx for both Vifest High and Cedar Falls. Vince Cutler, honorary captain for the year, proved to be one of the best guards in the league. By the way he's the boy who, when Stavie first wanted him to play ball said, 'LI couldn't play that silly game! .lim McKinstry turned in the record of leading scorer. He was the fel- low we all depended on in the tough spots. Bob Rohle, who took second honors in scor- ing, can play any position on the floor, but likes center best. 'iChuck Thorne was al- ways a thorn to his opponents. Don Com- mack regularly wanted to sink his buckets from the middle of the court. When Ed Gibson wcnt into a game, he gave it all he had, he's one who lives and gives of the real East High spirit. Dribbling and shooting with these boys every night after school, but seldom getting to play were John Hollingsworth, Cliff Zub- rod. Dan Balabon, Luke Warxn, Bill Bis- dorf, Don Head, Ole Nviekham and Norman Crosslcv. Our two boys who received honorable mention on the All-State team were Vince Cutler and ,lim McKinstry. Another big night was the only shutout victory of the season. 36 to 0, against East Des Moines. Starting out with a squad of six experi- enced men and four with little or no varsity experience. Coaeh Watel's sent his boys into their first test of the season November 30 against the Vinton School for the Blind and came out with the long end of a 33 to 5 seore. This seemed to be the spark that was needed for a sueeessful season. We had our highs and lows during the year, but if we had any lighting spirit at all. the opponents knew it and really had to struggle to win from our boys. Hur teamis reeord was upheld by such stars as Don Miller and George Tesla. Don was one ol' the best point getters for the team. From Battlefront to Classroom Mingled with the teen-age students here at East are six veterans of World War II. Although they are much more educated in experience, they appear quite the same as the rest of us as they carry their books down the familiar halls. These hoys tell us that they have not found it difficult to make the adjustment from life on the Anzio heachhead or on Leyte to the good old school days. Their high school days at East were inter- rupted when they took up arms against the enemy. They had many harrowing experi- ences, hut here in East life goes on nluch the same as before. Students regard them as one of the gang. We have proved that there need he no expanse between students and returned veterans. Among the discharged servicemen who were enrolled at East this year is Carl Fry who participated in the Tunisian cam- paign, the Salerno, Casino, Anzio battles and many others of equal importance. The navy was represented hy Darrell Wickham better known as Ole , who saw action on the Phil- ipines, Leyte, and Mindanao. Leland Reagan, Jack Bruner, James Lane and Charles Heckart complete the list of vets who took courses at East this year. Spring made an early debut this year and scattered that strange malady known as spring fever all too soon. We found ourselves dreaming about that junior-senior prom, the senior play and that day of all days, graduation! With a start we plunged back to reality at the thought of ever-present examinations and the copy to be edited for the Wooden Horse and yearbook. Spring sports, too, claimed our support: for some of us this spelled the last time we'd cheer our teams to victory before we'd leave the halls of East. Iune 7 sneaked up on us almost before we were aware of it. To under- classmen it meant just a brief three month break in the educational whirl, but to us seniors it marked the beginning of a new era. We put on our grad- uation gowns, straightened our hats, and quite conscious of whether or not we had that tassel on the right side, we marched across the stage to receive that coveted diploma. There were warm smiles tinged with regret as we said goodbyes. Yes, this will always be a memorable day to us, for today we stepped through the gateway into the future. . Marking the Decade Back in the spring of i937 when East students were laying plans for their first carnival and variety show, they had no idea that hefore a decade had rolled around their hrain child could hecome so popular that the puhlic would he demanding a three-night stand. But that's exactly what has happened. As the interest in the production has grown so have our capacities to evolve and present our annual production. From its early sponsorship hy the music department the event has hecome a school-wide project directed hy the student council and drawing contrihutions from all the departments of the school. 'l'hrough discussions in English classes we have each year selected a theme around which .-Ks XY. St-idler complains to S. Then through cooperation of facility advisors and our student committees we huild the skeleton of the show. We our- selves are sometimes amazed at the unique effects to which our themes lend themselves. when we selected perfume as the theme for this yearis extravaganza, for instance. we had no idea that on opening night we'd he featur- ing Adrian originals on two of our cast. Another surprise was the Des Nloines Reg- ister's request to do a page spread on the 1946 show. On opening night .larvis Baldwin. As the curtain went down on the final show of the decade. we hegan fahricating ideas for an even more successful series. Once Too Often. warns E. tlihson and S. liarg. Second row: N. llalahon. E. This group was selected from thirty- six boys interviewed by members of the Becker-Chapman post of the American Le- gion, sponsors of the program. The Legion hopes that through membership in Boys State fun. my In the Whirl students will gain a more definite knowledge of the principles of American government. The boys were selected on the basis of the qualities of honor, courage, loyalty, scholar- ship and service. Our Quill and Scroll chapter includes in its membership students who have done com- mendable work in journalism. An inter- national honorary society, the organization this year celebrates the twentieth anniversary of its founding at the University of Iowa undcr the sponsorship of George Gallup. With the motto, Ye shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free, the small nucleus has grown to include fifteen thousand aspiring journalists in its membership. It was our third victory in three games over the Wahawks and the second in two over the Cement City crew. The season's inaugural was played at Dunkerton, where Grove, our ace ehucker. let the country boys down with one blow while we crossed the plate three times. Wvaverly, Cedar Falls and Hudson all fell before our fast moving Trojans. Then we went to Cedar Rapids in hopes of beating the '45 state champs, Roosevelt High. The Roughriders doused our hopes as they rode rampant over us ll-l. The next week Hor ehider Fredericksburg took us down another notch. The day after, we came to in time to edge West High 7-6 in the last inning. We gained momentum again and took four straight to Will the sectional tournament at Dysart. ln the first round of the district, Grove let Strawberry Point down without a hit and the next Monday hurled beautiful ball to edge out Waverly l-0. The next day Monona tripped us up 4-l to send us out of the tournaments. We met Fredericksburg once more and beat them this time, 5-2. The next Saturday. the day before Mason City went to the state tournament, we clipped them 5-l on their home field. Cedar Falls and West High were our tune- up victims before we went in quest of the Big Seven crown. .73.
