Daniel Websteris quotation, set above the stage at East High School, challenges every member of the student body to do his own thing in education by becoming involved in a process of self-education. Books, teachers, classmates, the mass media, participation in school athletics and activities, added to enthusiastic school spirit-all become a part of our total self-education. Actively engaged in preparing to be loyal citizens of the future, we are learning to form intelligent opinions and resolutions about the current problems of the Vietnamese conflict, student revolt, racial prejudices, over- population, the abuse of drugs, and many others. But we must do our own learning, for no one else can do it for us. Let us remember that, although we are living in an age of constant change, that sometimes obscures a clear perspective of things, there is a better side to life, and our generation, more than any other, is given the opportunity to experience that good life. Our Age of Aquarius , a time of peace among nations, may be near, for the year 1970 marks the begin- ning of a new decade. At this time we hope that man, including the students of East High, will educate himself, so that he will discover the beginning of a modern-day Renaissance, an enlightenment and opening of minds and hearts. Ati the close of the following ten years we anticipate the return of peace, harmony, and understand- ing among all men. May we the students of East High School take that one small step for man in self-education so that we may participate in that great leap for mankind. With this thought in mind, we present the 1970 edition of the Sunrise. The SUNRISE Staff 1969-1970 i i u Dedication k.,j, CfL, An alumna of East High School, this outstanding administrator is admired by the students and facultiyy alike for her continuous display of qualities of lea - ership and understanding. Her tremendous school spirit has strengthened the unity of the school and brought to East, a surge of pride in the school's accomplishments. Her faithful attendance of athletic events has motivated our teams to be victorious. Prior to coming to East. she was a teacher of English at the old Tech High School. On January 12, 1955, she became East Highls Assistant Principal. Since that time, the school has shown literally count- less improvements, both in educational facilities and in building improvements. On March 1, 1967, she became East High's principal. Presently, she is editor and chairman of the Pennsylvania Council of Teachers of English Publications, and National Council of Teachers of English liaison officer. We are truly proud to have her as our principal and hope that she will never leave the Home of the Warriors Where she is respected by all. The SUNRISE staff therefore, takes great pride in dedicating the 1970 SUNRISE to our leader, Miss Viola E. Andrews. This was the sixth consecutive winning season for the little Warriors. Four Warriors were chosen for individual hon- ors. Tim Truitt received the most valuable lineman title, while Steve Bohun was selected the most val- uable back. The most improved back was Mike Speros, and Bill Maniece was the recipient of the most improved lineman title. Over fifty players turned out to participate this past season. Great spirit, cooperation, and all- around sportsmanship were characteristic qualities of the players. Fourteen lettermen, along with many new hopefuls, will return next season. Their goal for the 1970 season is the reversal of the three losses of this past season. Although tending to run in hot and cold streaks, the varsity basketball team wound up the 1969-70 season with an 11-11 record. Starting off slow, the Warriors won only one of their first six starts, but they burst into action to win five consecutive games over Prep, Academy, Tech, Hickory, and James- town. The starting lineup was inexperienced, but they had senior Eddie Woodard to lead the way. As the team's high scorer, he averaged sixteen points and eight rebounds per game. The only other senior in the starting lineup was Virgil McIntosh, who av- eraged eleven points per game. Jeff Satyshur a soph- omore averaging ten points a game, copped the most improved player award for this season. Completing the starting five were Vaughn Hewitt and Blaine Baker. As boardmen, they did an outstanding job, for they pumped in an average of fifteen and eight points apiece per game. Vying for sixth man position were two aggressive players, seniors Jim Gallegos and Tony Wilcox. Coach Carney Metzgar is looking forward to next season, in the hope that his team can make it four out of five for the District 10 title. Experience is usually considered one of the necessities for a successful season. With only two experienced players, Tim Galla and Bob Stravinsky, in the starting lineup, they Junior Varsity basket- ball team found a rough road to travel over this campaign. Rich Fortin, Paul Boyer, and Lance Lininger were the other starters, while Everett Griffin, John Matta, and Tommie Lee completed the Junior Var- sity roster. Tim Galla led the Junior Varsity Warriors in scoring and rebounding. Tim broke Vaughn Hewitt's one game scoring record set last year with his 32 point effort against Strong Vincent. Bob Stravinsky and Paul Boyer were the top hustlers on the squad. The 1969-70 Junior Varsity team gave all it could, but the lack of experience, height, and scoring power from the outside were hard to overcome. With the experience gained this year, some of this year's team will become valuable assets to the varsity team during the next two years. This marks the second undefeated season for the Little War- 61 Westlake riors as they extended their winning streak to 28 games. , The starting five included some of the best players 59 J- S' Wilson in the city. Rich Gavin, the team captain, scored more 52 Roosevelt than 200 points for the Warriors and also demonstrated 69 Gridley quick hands on defense. The excellent rebounding of 55 Memorial Dave Purdue helped to hold the opposition's score to a 66 W We minimum. Jim Davis handled his responsibility of ' 1 Son guarding the opponent's best big man in a more than 59 Prep satisfactory manner. Leading the team in assists was 55 Westlake Charlie Allen, who always passed off to an open man 52 J . S, Wilson under the bucket. Opposing teams were constantly 55 Roosevelt hounded by the fine defensive play of Steve Bohun. Al- 69 Gridle though substitutes Jerry Tate and Charlie Joyce pos- y. sessed the potential of playing first team for any other 69 Memffrlal junior high team but East, coach Jim Miller was very 53 W. Wl1S0l'l fortunate to be able to put these two men in and still 54 Prep have the team at full strength. Since all of the first seven except Dave Purdue are ninth graders, there will be many vacancies in next year's team. Coach Miller's loss will, however, be Varsity Coach Carney Metzgarls gain. Polk, Although East's wrestling team did not come out in first place this year, the boys did exceptionally well despite the many obstacles which they had to overcome. Although this was his first season as wrestling coach at East, Mr. Harry Rafle displayed great confidence and boosted the morale of his boys so that they did not give up when the going got tough. The boys excelled as individuals, however, as in the lightweight division where Len Pamula and Ed Darr did well with Ed taking the second place in the city championship. Odell Graves and Woody Thomp- son also achieved victory by capturing the city cham- pionship in the 157 pound and heavyweight divisions. Woody has also been victorious in thirty-eight con- secutive dual meet matches. Mr. Rafle's team for next year, however, looks very promising with fourteen out of fifteen lettermen returning. It will take many hours of practice and hard work, but perhaps next year's team will prove to be one of the best in East's history. D. Evans, T. Truitt, R. Dixon, C. Dunng Row 3: T. King, D. Law, V. This was a remark- able accomplishment, since many of the tankmen were inexperienced. Refusing to buckle under two initial defeats, the poloists practiced to develop their hidden talents. Finally, with three games left on the slate, the team latched on to a winning streak by trouncing Jamestown, Academy, and Prep. If this feat is a preview of next season, Coach Turbaczewski will surely head a team vying to recapture the Water Polo crown. The starting seven this year were forwards Gary George, Ken Simons, Chuck Tekoteeg guards John Satyshur, Bob Plonski, Chuck Wasielewski, and goalie Mike Mazanowski, Gary George displayed all his winning determination in the contest against Academy, when he scored 10 of the 11 East goals. Finishing the season with a record of 12 wins and 4 losses, our cross-country runners were able to tie for second place in the City Series and Lake Shore League. Outstanding in the Warrior cause was Doug Brown who broke his own record and set a new school mark at 12:51 for the 21f2 mile run. ln this same category, Bill Laskowski followed with his best effort at 13 106. Misfortune struck after mid-season when Doug Brown suffered a leg injury that kept him out of action. It was then that the clutch running of Mike O'Rouke and Dan Crotty proved vital in preserving the winning streak. East High ended the 1970 schedule by participat- ing in the Gannon Invitational meet and the District meet. Once again, Doug Brown demonstrated his talent by finishing 7th in the Gannon meet and 2nd in the District. It had been 11 long years - and 12 days - before the Warrior golf team had ever won a match. The last time a win was recorded was 1958 and it took the last game of the 1969 season to do it again. Congratulations are in order for Lee Stearns, captain of the team, Gene George, the Satyshur brothers, Jeff and John, Tom Stroz, Sam Veneziano, and Tim Pohl who were instrumental in the Warrior victory over Strong Vincent. Other players who gave our team depth were Gary George, Mike Groucutt, Robert Lachowski, Fred Vamos, and Tom Markiewicz. Mr. Charles Kent, whose coaching record now stands at 1-48-1, is very op- timistic about next season, because there are five lettermen returning. Last year's baseball season looked a little like the old Mets with a record of 6 wins, 10 losses, and 1 tie. And, like the Mets, the Warriors were building a new team. The 'tking of the stick on the Warrior squad was Gordie Harpster with a .322 batting average. Virgil McIntosh, the second-sacker, was another player who gave opposing pitchers a lump in their throat. The rifle-arms of the outfield were the Pus- cher brothers, Manfred and Wilfred, and Chuck Woodard. For his hustle and all around great play, Don Klins was awarded the most valuable player award for the Warrior cause. Handling the mound assignment were Steve Ward and Bob Robson while Gary George acted as catcher. In the coming season the Warriors are sure to look like the new Mets with the nucleus of a great team returning. Klins, S. Ward, G. George, J. Gillespie, C. Woodard, V. McIntosh M. Visnosky, L. No team possessing first place held a big lead in the standings. The same was true for individual statistics. The officers were Wil Puscher, Presidentg Ed Root, Vice-Presidentg Steve Mook, secretary, and Don McMahon, treasurer. Under the direction of faculty advisor Mr. George Simitoski, the bowlers developed the quality of good sportsmanship. East High also had an entrant in the Open House Tournament. Members of this team included some of the best bowlers in the league. Captain Don Grotkow- ski and his teammates proved to be tough competi- tion for the other participants in the race for the title. The East High Weightlifting Club tries to develop both speed and strength. Besides developing individual strength to participate in local and national tournaments, it also stimulates our own sports program. The junior high members met every Tuesday and Thursday, while the senior high met Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. The group's advisor, Mr. Seth Bloomquist, holds a city record in the 132 pound weight class with a deadlift of 445 pounds. He and the members of the club deal mainly with the four basic lifts - deadlift, squat, bench press, and the military press. Another first in girls' sports at East High was the formation of a girls' tennis team, under the direction of Mrs. Margaret Davis. The girls wanted something that they could participate in with a feminine touch. The team was composed mainly of sophomores and juniors. One of the high scorers, Teresa Burns, has an excellent swing and good foot- work. They competed against Vincent and Iroquois with the result of one victory and one defeat. To intelligently understand and discuss current social, economic and political conflicts that exist in the world was the primary objective of the Model United Nations this year. Advising the twenty-six member group was Mr. Robert Stinely. On November 22 and 23, twenty seniors represented the country of Spain at the model General Assembly, held at Gannon College. During this two-day seminar, students from tri-state area schools met at Gannon to debate the five major topics which were: the Mid-East crisis, the problem of world disarmament, social, economic and military use of the seabed, the Vietnam conflict, and finally, the question of weighted voting in the General Assembly. Award Annually, a girl from the senior class is awarded the Daughters of the American Revolution Award. Selected this year for this singular honor was Lillian Schwartz. She was chosen for this award on the basis of the following characteristics: depend- ability, punctuality, loyalty, truthfulness, cooperativeness, courteousness, and con- sideration, as well as leadership, pa- triotism, self-control and personality. The Presque Isle Chapter awarded Lillian the D.A.R. Award which enabled her to qualify for a scholarship applicable to the college of her choice. Garter And Suspender Award '-1,7 Selected to receive the 1970 Garter and Suspender Award for demonstrating qualities of honesty, character, leadership, personality, and appearance were seniors Lillian Schwartz and Sam Veneziano. This traditional handing down of the garter and suspender to two mem- bers of the junior class by two seniors who previously won the award has been carried on for the past 26 years at East High. 105 Student Council This year, Christmas cheer really rang out as the Student Council Deck the Halls contest got underway. Some of the homeroom door decorations were considered out of this world , but special recognition went to Miss Behan's senior girls' homeroom 211, a group of girls who placed first with their ingenious Peace on Earth door decoration. This year also saw a newer and more active Student Council. The method for choosing rep- resentatives was revised for both the junior and senior high groups. Teachers in each grade nominated three candidates who possessed the characteristics of school consciousness, ac- ademic standing, and the ability to work to- gether. The names were then tallied by the officers. The majority of times a name appeared on the nomination sheet determined the position. D. Mares, Vice President: G. Staynoff, Treasurer: Mr. J. Enthusiastic performance was the key to the band's showmanship this year. Our band appeared in the Veterans Day Parade and the Zoo Parade, as well as the Memorial Day Parade. The band topped off their season with their annual Spring Concert. Added to these activities was the band's successful drive to raise money to buy new uniforms. Bamboo jewelry, silver trays, and book covers were among the items sold to raise money. Kunik Varsity Cheerleaders Enthusiasm, spirit and hard work distinguished the East High Cheerleaders this year. The cheerleaders backed the football and basketball teams with cheers, chants, and creative pom-pom routines. These activities not only encouraged the team but also gave the student body more spirit and participation which was needed to achieve victory. To prepare for the 1969-70 season, this summer Nina Semc- zuk, Lillian Schwartz, and Robin Peters attended a week long cheerleading camp at Williamsport, Pa. where they learned new cheers, routines and yells. This year the Varsity cheerleaders sold East buttons, and cookbooks to raise money for new basketball uniforms and rain jackets. Leading the Varsity Cheerleaders this year were Co-captain Pam Zales, advisor Mrs. F. Halupcznski, and captain Nina Semczuk. Let's Go! ! 'e-f I ll I. V. Cheerleaders . i 3, P. Schaak, R. Hines, E. Precision and talent marked the East High twirlers in their performances throughout the 1969- 70 school year. During the first week of July, the twirlers met twice a week to perfect and create new routines. Led by captain Paula Grace, the twirl- ers marched in the half-time shows during football and basketball seasons and in the Memorial Day, Veterans' Day, and Zoo Parades. To help raise money for new uniforms, the twirlers sold East High stationery, and had three successful bake sales at the Erie Mall. Because their reputation is held in high esteem, new members are chosen on the basis of honesty, integrity, self-discipline, sound moral character, and above average intelligence.
