Milloy, Faculty Advisor To become a member of the National Honor Society at East is the ambition of most students. Membership, however, is not so easily attained. A student's eligibility is determined by his scholastic average. If a student is in the upper third of his class, his name is submitted to all the teachers in the building who rate him for character, service, and leadership. Leadership is determined by a students ability to hold school offices and positions of responsibility successfully. Character includes personality, honesty, reliability, and cofoperation. Service is achieved by working on committees and rendering service to teachers and school when called upon to do so. The ratings are then totaled and the students who have the necessary qualifications are passed upon by a special committee of teachers. Many students who are eligible are kept out because of the quota set up by the national organif zation. Only l5 Q of the graduating class, IOCQ of the 121 class and SW ofthe llf2 class may join. The names of the new membersfelect are kept secret until the very day of induction. This is a most solemn and effective ceremony. Old members go out and tap the new members on the shoulder to indicate that they have been chosen. These few End their ambition fulfilled and become eligible to wear the treasured official pin of the National Honor Society.
