We did not expect that the athletes, stu- dents, and teachers would ever get along. Well, we were proven wrong. Our athletes were excellent, the students got together and made a terrific student body and strong student government, and the teach- ers could not have been better. Understanding, care and expecting chal- lenges have made this year the best yet. Our schools together made one great school and we also found that we really weren't so different but very similar. This has been the year of the Bremerton High Knights and it was a great experience that we will never forget. 8 1 'Ha PV f 0.5 1, .4 Q' if Since KING WEED ciidrft get his pages in, We had to resort to this true to life color picture of Wx KM vb vu CW Ml 0321? Give me the ball and let me shootw, was the general westsiders interpretation of East High basketball, while. on the other hand, Stand there and bore me . may have been an eastsidcrs concept of W7est High basketball. Certainly Brcmerton's new school would be faced with a definite problem, how do you handle joining the two squads? Bremertonsis answer was direct and to the point, Les Eathorne. Surely the Knight coach fLes on round-ballj was one of the mainstay's in the smooth union of the two squads. Even though at times we all may have felt like dribbling Mr. Ef, down the floor instead of the ball, he always held us together and kept our respect. Of course he was working with a great bunch of guys: -sma. Hrocko, Dawkins, Dick, Maxmer, Mumbles, Oly, Oz, Quickness, Radar, Thomy, Tree, Walthall Qstrange namej, and of course our great manager fand wa- ter boyj Marc Fox. Now as our regular season has drawn to a close with a seventeen-three mark. we look forward to the playoffs with nothing but high hopes and ambitions. Quai .1 new me GIRL S BASKETBALL This joining of the two high schools brought some talented girls to- gether into the basketball program Last e ' . y ar s Lori Carver from West and the league's top scorer and also made the All-League Team. Cindy Christensen from East was also on the All-League roster. When the two teams became one, we had potential to go, a long way baby! The season got off to a slow start, we lost our first four games. Coach Pugh brought a new offense over from the West High program that the East girls had to learn. Finally everybody was playing equally well and we started winning. We lost our tallest starter Cindy Christensen for our last five league games due to illness. With a lot of effort and determination Connie Digiovanni came off the bench and helped make up for the loss. At the end of our league play we were in a three way tie for first place triple-A. We played in a three team play-off and qualified to play in the West Central Division tournament. Between the tie breakers and the tournament we had to play five games in six days, which is a tough sched- ule for anybody. if w M ,vs Nm 'M AH. W X 1-L, ' W, M V NH X. X' . W y CIRUS BASKETBALL CONT,D We played our first game against Benton. We played our best and beat them by one point. After a days rest we went to Federal Way to play Newport. Our leading scorer Lori Carver had two sprained anklesg with the help of Al Smith she was able to play with them taped. We lost the game by eleven points ending our season. We all felt that we had a good season and had nothing to be ashamed of. About mid-season we had a chance to go to Victoria Can- ada and play some Canadian teams. We did well and really improved our game. We learned a lot about the different lifestyle there. Between games Yvonne Randall went to buy a coke, she discovered to her surprise that vending ma- chines in Canada take Canadian coins. On our trip home we had to go through customs and needed to show some identification to prove we were Amer- ican citizens. We thought we were rid of Lori Carver when she found she had no identificationg but to our dismay the Canadians didn't want her so they made us take her any- wav. Altogether we had a successful season and with the tal- ented Juniors coming back we are looking forward to a good or even better season next year. 42 ! Any guy who would go out in front of a whole gym full of people and wear tights has just got to be tough. And this year's team was no exception. The combining of East 8: West High Schools brought to- gether the best talent from both schools Although the team record was not great several excellent individual efforts high lighted this season. Among Bremerton's best wrestlers were Mike Davis, 108 Mike Miller, 129, Chris Ulbright, l35 Alfonso Martinez, 1483 Mike Borcherd- j 1 s 3 , , ' - ii 4 ing, 158, Bill Rudolph, 178, Leon Yea- don, 190, and Paul Chase, unlimited di- vision. Mike Borcherding and Leon Yeadon qualified for the state tourna- ment by surviving fierce competition at regionals. This yearis coaches were Chuck Semancik and Mr. Grieve, and they did a fine job under often less than desirable conditions. A special thanks is extended towards the varsity and ,I.V. cheerleaders, whose inspired cries of Roll 'em over, lay 'em flat, pin their shoulders to the mat echoed through often nearly empty gymnasiums. Their support during the season was much ap- preciated by the team. Top to Bottom, Fred Bowers of North entangled in the Rudolph Special! Agony of defeat Get it Ulhright! Many students from the west side of town will certainly remember having a student council rather than an Executive Council, a House of Representatives, a Senate, and a Supreme Court. There were mainly six students responsible for this change. Three representatives from each of the two high schools began working together on a new constitution for the new Bremerton High. These six students began working on the constitution during the fourth quarter of the 1977-78 school year. The Committee wanted a more realistic look at government and also desired as much participation as possible. These two factors were the main reasons in the type of government that we now have. But yet there were problems. With the A.S.B. government not getting in the swing of things until Homecoming, it was greatly confusing. But that was only the beginning. When Andy Peters felected Treasurerj resigned from office, Congress fthe House and Senate, was faced with the task of appointing a new treasurer. Dennis Eagle was designated as the new treasurer. Later on, a new vice-president was needed since Leland Stocker replaced Ron Craft as president. The House and Senate were also faced with proposed amendments to the constitution. Not only that, but the issues of the parking lot and budgeting of monies for next year's activities were a main concern to all. But the congress worked on these issues with vigor and determination to succeed. With all the problems that the students faced this year, the student body government proved to be a learning experience to all that participated. Few are likely to forget their participation in it. .l HDUSE OF RE PS. A Orchestra plays some of the greatest composers music, such as, Vivaldi, Mozart, Beethoven and many more. Orchestra appeared in various places around the county. They played for the opening of the new library. Some of the Orchestra players appeared in the solofen- semhle contest, and went to Central washington University for an Orchestra Festival. Just like band and choir Orchestra does the regular Christmas, Swing, Spring, and Armed Forces Concerts. But Orchestra had a little special concert of their own. They had a String Night. This night is when the high school string players play for the elementary string players. S0 you can see that Orchestra's year is filled with perfor- mances. 13 ggi gr ' ,, c fy 2 fr . Under the direction of George Mantzke they received top ratings and had numerous performances within the community. They also had a jammin' weekend at the jazz festival in Gresham. The great personalities and the family unity felt within the group brought pleasures both in and out of school. The unfor- gettable memories of the wild and crazy guysi' and the qui- ana angels are many. Our daily practices included appear- ances from our resident comedian Russ Queen, and frequent outbursts of Shut up!', from our Sergeant at Arms Ricki. Various Mod's parties brought Boogie and Louie jammin, to- gether with an occasional show from the rubber chicken leg. Who will ever forget the sour note the girls hit at the contest? It will echo forever in our minds. Amen. 94 X s s 5 Good Evening Ladies and Gentlemen. Welcome to the BREMERTON HIGH CONCERT choir page. We are glad that you could make it. They continued the show by singing in different languages about Christmas around the world. In February they performed in the Olympic League Festival along with the choirs from Central, South, and North Kitsap. The choirs combined into a mass choir consisting of about 350 voices.
