Foreword To keep up with the times. East has established many new activities, such as Radio Club, Cinemas-ters, and Personnel Bureau, the latter having been organ ized this year by the assistant principal. Dr. Crosby. The Dramatic Society, now a popular and active organization, has taken the place of the strictly male Bachelors’ Club of olden days. To be in style. Easterners have chosen the traditional cap and gown to replace best dresses and Sunday suits at graduation. TAKING a backward glance at the East Senior High School and Pawtucket of the past, the staff of the 1948 Red jacket has chosen as its theme Yesterday and Today. Since the turning point of the century Pawtucket has undergone many changes, transferring the city into a modern business and industrial center. Honking horns and traffic whistles are heard on the same Main Street which once echoed the clatter of horses' hoofs and carriage wheels. Electric and fluorescent lighting systems have replaced the old gas lamps, which required the daily rounds of the lamplighter. Reflecting on old East High and old Pawtucket, we have tried to give this edition of the Redjacket an air of bygone days. mgr © ® a • TABLE OF CONTENTS it C c xis ?-v o i n- 3 c+4jjfc 44a4 • gj 0 1 4 M(M i - AOfVAL D MOO«( 8 £kamu fi. c- ?ay « 5 M4TM N OA My dear Graduates of 1948: Ever since you entered East Senior High School in September, 1946, your scholastic record has been noticeably high. For the greater part of the time that you were in the school, it would be true, in general, to say that the number of students in your class who were receiving all A’s” was equal to the number getting all ''A’s” in the other two classes combined. However, it remains to be noted that this superiority has been very decidedly on the part of the girls rather than on the part of the boys. Of the sixty-eight members of your class who were highest in rank at the end of the junior year, fifty-five were girls and thirteen were boys. What the explanation of this condition is seems difficult to determine. Two facts, however, seem evident. One is that the girls do a great deal more studying than the boys and the second is that the same condition exists throughout the nation. The Class of 1948 has been a pleasant one with which to work. I have grown to know some of you very well and I shall long value your friendship. In future years I hope that you will remember East Senior High School with pleasure and affection. May the lessons you have learned here be of service to you throughout a long and happy life. I wish you Good Luck and Godspeed. Henry J. Winters Dedication To MR. WILLIAM WALLACE LEE, head of the mathematics department, a man deeply devoted to his profession, whose practical philosophy will go with us through our lives, we, the class of ’48, proudly dedicate this edition of the Red jacket Miss Flora S. Curtis Dean Dr. Percy R. Crosby Asst. Principal Class Ode I. For three years you have sheltered us, Oh, dear East Senior High, But now the time when we must part Is quickly drawing nigh. You were a helping hand to us; You taught us not to fear, To meet life’s battles with a smile Throughout each passing year. II. You gave us wisdom, honors, help, A lift along the way. Our guide and stay in years gone past, You give us hope today— The hope that we, like those before, May gain life’s greatest fame, Be honest, patient, loyal, true, Bring tributes to thy name. III. So, Alma Mater, now we come To bid you fond adieu; No matter where life’s roadways lead We'll always think of you. As we remember all you’ve taught, A gleaming beacon light, You'll shine upon the path that starts This graduation night. Music by DORIS Nield Honorable Mention Words by B. H. Earline Marsh President’s Message Dear Graduates: The hours remaining for us at East High are rapidly slipping past, as we prepare to leave these corridors for the last time. Before we part, however, let us look back —look back to yesterday, for such it seems, when we entered these halls and began our high school life. We were facing a new and fascinating era in our lives. In the text books we discovered secret s of knowledge, and in the laboratories we explored the mysteries of nature. We learned to make friends in the classroom and on the athletic field. We laughed and played together in our leisure hours. We were building our minds, our bodies, our characters. But while we concentrated on our studies, and made our friendships, the world around us was recovering from a great war. It was wounded and bleeding badly. It tried to rise but was unable to help itself. It needed strength, great strength, to pull itself together. But where was it going to get that strength? Recovery would take time and work. There was only one source, and that was youth. We were to be that strength. Today we leave East High School, where we have worked as one class for three years, and from now on we shall play our parts in the healing of our universe. We shall help in different ways; some will be leaders, and others, followers, but together we must form the greatest working team in history. Together we will be the source of the nation’s energy, and together we must try to lift this stricken world to its feet, help it to begin anew its industries, and return it to some degree of normalcy. This task is the greatest challenge that could confront us, and we cannot, we must not, for the sake of mankind, be indifferent to it. Then, someday, we can stand and look in retrospect at the new world and be proud — because we helped to make it possible. —Brendan Gilbane Abraham Abgrab Budd” Future Intentions: Baseball Player Activities: Hi-Y 3; Hi-Light 3: Baseball 1, 2, 3; A. AWARDS fOR many years it has been the custom of the Daughters of the American Revolution to present annually the D.A.R. Good Citizenship Award to the most eminent girl and boy in the senior class. This year an unusual situation arose when three girls were adjudged by their classmates and senior teachers as equally outstanding. The illustrious trio included Earline Marsh, Barbara Hall, and Patricia Reynolds, all of whom were zealous workers in diverse school activities, and holders of high scholastic records throughout their high school course. Miss Hall, whose name was chosen by lot, was to represent the three winners in the award competition in Providence, where girls from all parts of the state would compete for the national contest in Washington, D. C. Brendan Gilbane was unanimously selected by the Pawtucket Boys’ Club staff and Mr. Winters as the most distinguished senior boy in the class of ’48. President of our class for four consecutive years, a member of the Classbook Board, of the Dramatic Society and Student Council, and our famous star on the football team, Gilbane earned and won an enviable reputation. To these four the Class of 1948 extends sincere congratulations and good wishes for success. 49 Patricia Reynolds Brendan F. Gilbane Most Beautiful ...... The second hand sweeps over the clock, the red light blinks, and—you’re on the air! Being comparatively new, the Radio Club has grown from a handful of enthusiastic students interested in this promising field to a large group of active, talented broadcasters. Some are veterans of three years behind the mike. In commemoration of Music Week, the Radio Club last year presented the story of Marian Anderson's rise to fame. A few outstanding members also distinguished themselves in the High School Radio Workshop programs over WFCI. With the energetic direction of Miss Henrietta Brazeau, who is director of radio in Pawtucket public schools, the Radio Club presented an evening mock radio show in the auditorium. Such scripts as Sweet Sixteen,” Freedom Train,” and The Story of Radio,” with the combined Glee Clubs and orchestra, helped to pay for the recorder which the club had long hoped to purchase. With the addition of the recorder to the equipment in A-l the club advanced another step toward creating an attractive, well-equipped studio. Since A-l was first transferred into a studio, the club has added to it each year. The mikes, the portable door, the library, and now the recorder have been added by the past and present Radio Club to make a studio of which we are proud. Since the establishment of the studio, a picture of the best performer and worker has been placed on the wall. It is said that the Radio Club is the only organization in the school which frames and hangs its most outstanding member. Along with the smiling faces in A-l, the class of 1948 will add its contribution— another milestone in the history of the Radio Club. 54 Hi-Light With the election of Ralph Zalusky as editor-in-chief to succeed Abe Nathan-son, the East Hi-Light brought another year to a close. During the year the paper reported to East students school items of interest, blow-by-blow descriptions of sports events, the goings on” in the girls’ gym, the results of elections (memorable among which was the election of Bren Gilbane as president of his class for the fourth time), club news, editorials for holidays or on current topics—these editorials were instrumental in getting a new curtain for the auditorium—and Bev Arzt’s Column of Poetic Justice.” The Inquiring Reporter and You Know Them By” brought a glow of pride and often times a chuckle to East High readers. Every Easterner tried to keep his name among the Bright-Lights” and away from the Black-outs.” The paper this year will begin with surplus cash, thanks to an up-and-coming advertising department headed by Jim Wheaton and Pat Reynolds, a thorough business department managed by Anne Westcott and Rita Mulligan, and an excellent circulation department directed by Hazel Flanagan and Irene Maclsaac. The page-editing of Ronald Moore, Joan Butler, Sarkis Nahabedian, new sports editor, Joan Aspinwall, Jean Fillion, Nancy Rahill, and Phyllis Logan contributed greatly to the paper’s success; and the splendid writing of Earline Marsh, Barbara Hall, Audrey Marsh, Alice Hermiz, Liz Farrell, Carl Rieger, and many others provided a high standard of literary quality. But the main support of the Hi-Light is that wonderful, untiring, unsung heroine, Miss Dorothy E. Bryant. Without her the paper would never have emerged for the first time in years in the black.” HI-LIGHT First row: A. McKnight, R. Mulligan, M. Costigan. J. Fillion. N. Rahill, L. Newman, B. Arzt. A. However, as time passed, the students were given a restricted role in the enactment of these rules—a fact which seems to make the pupils more readily aware of their responsibilities and obligations. Thus the Student Council was born. This group, comprised of elected members of the three classes and delegates from the various school organizations and clubs, under the leadership of a member of the faculty, met each month to discuss, review, and formulate school laws. But as the number of students in the school grew and the progressive ideas of education came into being, the Student Council was altered. Today, the group meets every other week under the leadership of Mr. John S. Masterson, not only to discuss the rules governing East High, but to plan social events and methods of raising money for worthy causes. The Student Council of 1947-48 was led by the following capable officers: Bren Gilbane, president; Dick Buba, vice-president; Barbara Fisk, secretary; and Ralph Zalusky, treasurer. They undertook many projects and although the illness of Mr. Winters curtailed their program somewhat, the results were noteworthy. During the fiscal year the Student Council ran a Mid-Year Hop, a refreshing climax to exams, sold ice cream bars at basketball games, giving enjoyment to the crowd and surplus cash to the Council treasury, arranged for mirrors in the girls lavatories—to milady’s delight—provided a smooth-looking efficient new scoreboard for the gym, sponsored the annual color day and locker clean-up day (we found the old lunch bags we were sure we had brought home and the homework we knew we had passed in), and effected a more practical and convenient seating arrangement in the cafeteria. 66 THE BEST THERE IS” First Row, L. to R.: Herbert Waugh. Senior Dramatics In 1908, because of a Pawtucket High School rule preventing girls and boys from acting together, two dramatic clubs were formed—the Sigma Chi for girls, and the Bachelors' Club for boys. After graduation the members of the clubs joined together to form a Dramatic Society, the forerunner of the present-day Community Players. In the Society’s first production (1909), What Happened to Jones,” were Philip Curtis Sr., Carl Bryant, Thomas Clarke, Mabel Woolsey, and Caroline Blodgett Clarke, prominent in dramatic and music circles today. But today there is quite a different story, with boys and girls participating in the same production. The first play for this year was Ever Since Eve”, a delightful comedy about the trials and tribulations of a high school senior, editor of his school paper, and his pals. The next presentations of the society were the three one act plays: Three Pills in a Bottle”, Sunday’s Child”, and The Best There Is”. The latter, a drama of the parade of stirring scenes that take place in a large hospital, represented East in the Rhode Island Drama Festival. The last production, the senior play, Ghost Train”, a story of suspense, drama, romance, and comedy, is complete with a body, a Scotland yard detective, a honeymoon couple, smugglers, and a ghost train”. This year was the first for our director. Miss Hope V. Carey, Miss Flora Curtis having resigned after twenty-six years as adviser. Miss Carey, a graduate of East High, is well qualified to direct our plays, as she has been very active in the Community Players as a director, prop man, actress, and playwright. Previously she was an adviser to dramatic clubs in Jenks Junior High School and West Senior High School. DRAMATIC SOCIETY AWARD “COR the past twenty-three years the most outstanding girl and boy in the senior class have received a scholarship of fifty dollars each from the Dramatic Society of East Senior High School. The awards are made on a basis of dependability, honesty, extra-curricular activity, scholarship, seriousness of purpose, and loyalty. In the selection of the winners, the senior class first votes, after which the names of the three boys and three girls receiving the highest number of votes are submitted to the senior teachers, who cast a ballot for the one boy and one girl who, in their estimation, are most deserving of this coveted prize. There was an unusual occurrence this year; the same three girls who were tied for first place for the D.A.R. award were again so honored by their classmates. The vote of the teachers decided the winner. The graduating class extends sincere congratulations and best wishes to the recipients of the 1948 Dramatic Society awards; Brendan F. Gilbane and Earline Marsh. GIRLS’ BASKETBALL Left to Right: W. Bond. B. Fisk, B. Kelley. D. Legare. S. Buban, L. Collier, M. Houle. GIRLS’ SWIM First Row, L. to R.: P. Rodier, J. Thibert, F. As usual, East had a good team, coach Arthur Nooney guiding his team to a berth in the state championship playoffs. Before the season opened, the Redjackets were expected to wind up fairly low in the league standings, but they surprised the league and ended in third place with a record of thirteen wins and five defeats. With only two regulars, Bob Shannon and Ray Rossi from last year’s team, coach Nooney molded his squad into a smooth, co-ordinated quintet. Teaming up on the first five with Rossi and Captain Shannon were Paul Blease, Joe Braganca, and Dick Buba. Being small in stature, the team had to make up this deficiency by speed and aggressiveness. Sophomore Frank Lantagne and junior George Sonntag saw the greatest service as substitutes, while Vinnie Varone, Dick Schiappa, Jack Cruz, Fred Lennon, and Ken Martin were also on the squad. East opened its season with a win over a highly rated St. Raphael team, but was later beaten by the Saints on the latter’s home court. During the league season, East was defeated twice by only one team, De La Salle, both games being lost by narrow margins. One of the most exciting contests of the season was played at La Salle gym, when East nosed out La Salle by one point in an overtime period, 41-40. In the state tournament the ’Jackets had the misfortune to meet Westerly, last year’s state champions, in the first game. Westerly’s height and experience proved too much for the Exchange Streeters and they lost the game, 49-38. The students can be proud of this year’s team, for it upheld the high basketball standards of the school by fighting its way to the quarter finals of the state tournament. 78 Football Producing an offensive machine paralleled by no other in the state, East High’s football eleven inaugurated the first successful campaign in years. At the end of the season the gridiron had felt the surge of power garnered by a team so intricately smooth that it gained the respect of opponents and the admiration of fans. In the first two games the red-shirted warriors trampled West Warwick and Westerly handily—both games making prominent East’s offensive power. In the third encounter an undefeated East Providence team added another notch in Pawtucket East, as the latter was subject to jitters and general debility, ending on the short end of a 19-6 score. In the following contest the fans thrilled to see East gain a total of almost three hundred yards offensively, hold Woonsocket High to less than one hundred defensively, yet lose 6-0. It was a game marked by neither the complete domination of one team nor the victory of the other, but instead, by the poorest football officiating seen in many a past game. To gain some consolation from their previous defeat East rolled over their city rival, West, by the convincing margin of 20-0. After losing a heartbreaker to Hope, East started training for the all-important Turkey Day classic with St. Raphael Academy. By that time in the year the fans knew well the bone-crushing blockading of Captain Vartkis Kinoian, the hard-smashing drives of Otto Cardosi, the uncanny passing of Bren Gilbane, the swivel-hipped running of Howie Lonsdale, the offensive and defensive strength of Dick Blais, Charlie Fisk, Tilquist, McGrane, Parker, Kulis, and Bliss; and on that sunny cold Thanksgiving morning, the Red and White followers saw each boy carrying out his duty to the utmost. They watched an underdog East team score with lightning-like speed, wither under two drives by the favorites, and ultimately smash to a tie and almost a victory—climaxing a season full of glory for a team worthy to represent Pawtucket East. Swimming Team The East Senior High School Swimming Team of 1948, led by Coach Max Read, splashed to one of the best seasons in years. East, represented by the greatest backstroker in the school's history. Bill Sonner, and by the best diver in New England, Joe Callery had an exceptional record, although Coach Max Read arranged a rigorous schedule. Record-breaking Bill Sonner and diving champion Joe Callery paced the East High’s attack. Climaxing Sonner's career was the winning of the New England senior 150-yard backstroke championship in a record-breaking time of one minute and thirty-nine seconds. Joe Callery, who was not defeated this year, won the Rhode Island junior diving championship. Less spectacular but equally dependable were Tom Hennick, George Rivard, Louis Brierley, and Tom Gaughan, who won consistently for East High. In the relay group Ken Douglas and Bill Simmons did extremely well. Robert W. Brown, Robert L. Brown, Paul Blease, Irving Max, and Bob Sweet were the other members of the squad. In the first meet the East natators went down to defeat to a strong Brown freshman team, 38-28. The next two contests told a different story; the Easterners managed to squeeze out their city rival. West, by a score of 35-31, and to win over Worcester Academy, 37-29. Then our men bow'ed to Moses Brown, 30-27. The next two contests were victories; the Exchange Streeters defeated a highly-rated championship team from Hartford, Connecticut, by a score of 35-31, and nipped St. George by the not too impressive score of 34-32. The last two meets were unsuccessful for the Easterners, w'ho lost again to the Brown freshmen, 40-26, and to Gardner, Massachusetts, 36-30. When the Redjacket went to press the swimming schedule had not been completed, but the five victories and four defeats of the team showed their ability to hold their own. 80 Classbook Board To make this classbook an unbreakable link between our high school days and our future life has been our earnest endeavor. We feel that the 1948 Redjacket should not be a book representing just the staff, but one containing the contributions of all seniors. We worked on the classbook during our meetings, which were held every Wednesday afternoon. At other times we obtained ads, composed and typed articles, arranged appointments with the photographer, proofread all items, and attended to countless other tasks which the compiling of a classbook necessitates. The staff members, in completing their duties, earnestly tried to incorporate many of the ideas suggested by their fellow classmates. We are deeply indebted to Miss Elizabeth T. Howes, who has been more to us than our faculty adviser. She has guided us over many obstacles which, without her assistance, would have been impassable. Her willingness to help has endeared her to all her co-workers. The Art Department, under the supervision of Mrs. Lottie B. Carpenter, devoted many hours to carefully illustrating our theme. Under Mrs. Carpenter’s guidance the drawings are a splendid example of fine art. The staff members, facing an uncertain future along with all their classmates, in a moment of nostalgia took a look backward, and chose for their theme Yesterday and Today. Graduation is our immediate goal. After that milestone has passed, our efforts will be directed toward other accomplishments. The class of '48 as a unit will have ceased to exist. Therefore, we hope that this Redjacket will serve as a pleasant remider of our time at East—a souvenir of those carefree da)s which soon will be our yesterdays. Acknowledgements rN the compilation of a book like the Red-X jacket, help and co-operation come from many sources. To all who gave assistance in any way, we of the staff extend our deep and sincere appreciation. To the following we are especially grateful: Miss Elizabeth T. Howes, our faculty adviser, for her careful guidance and constant encou ragemen t Mrs. Lottie B. Carpenter of the Art Department for the many illustrations of fine art Mr. Walter W. VanDale for his willing co-operation at all times Mr. Benjamin Northup of the Advertisers’ Engraving Company for his helpful suggestions Mr. Raymond Cassels of the Chronicle Printing Company for his patience and good will Mr. Raymond Oberg, Mr. Dennis McCarthy, and Mr. John Bonderew, for their photographic contributions Mr. Carl Bryant for the generous loan of his pictures of the early Dramatic Society And finally, the advertisers, whose all-important financial backing facilitated the editing of our classbook. 85 Compliments of AMBROSE P.
