Character that never gives up A game of inches and a game of breaks. This was especially true for the Scarlet football team in 1972. We started our season with a 29-14 vic- tory over Mount Pleasant and the team looked toward bigger ac- complishments. After shutting out Tech 22-0, we looked to the Dowling game. A victory over Valley would have meant that two undefeated teams would clash. But we overlooked Valley and lost 24-6. The big game was here and the pride was extremely high. We led the highly-ranked Dowling until the fourth quarter when the depth of the Maroons caught up with us. The final score was 34-13. A break or two in this game, and it might have been the up- set of the year. Homecoming brought in the Roosevelt game, but we were down and lacking spirit, with the score showing a 14-0 defeat. The game was played without our leading rusher and the leading rusher in the city, Sheldon Morton, who was lost for the season because of an injury. With only four games left in the season, we charged. Shutting out Lin- coln 34-0 returned the spirit and pride to the team. We lost a tough one to Hoover 28-15 but then rebounded and defeated North 27-8 to even our record at 4-4. The East-Sioux City North game showed what the team was made of. With the score 14-12 late in the fourth quarter, the offense moved the ball to the North four-yard line. With no time-outs left and the clock showing six seconds, we missed a hurried field goal attempt. The game was lost, but it showed that we the Scarlets were a team with character, a team that never gives up. Left: No. 12, sophomore Rob Michelsen releases a perfect spiral pass despite a heavy Lincoln rush. FOOTBALL
