Top-Notch Sound— Received Instrumentally The 80 students who participated in the Instru- mental Music Department were rewarded by another successful year. Mr. Vander Wilt, head of the In- strumental Music Department, directs such groups as the Woodwind Choir, Brass Choir, String Ensem- ble, Concert Band, Stage Band, and the Marching Band. In the 1969-1970 school year, enthusiastic stu- dents practiced to achieve the best sound in music for EHS. These groups played at assemblies for the student body, as well as other activities, including half-time entertainment at football and basketball games. This group is known as the Scarlet Singers, who reflect a new age with new ideas. Mr. Carnes, the adviser, and his Scar- let Singers reach out for unusual music approaches, then attempt to relate them to East High. Along with the addition of the Scarlet Singers, EHS still has its traditional Marching Band. The band marched along with the Steppers during the football season and played in the gym for assem- blies and basketball games.
