Practical Skills Learned Sewing, cooking, and family management are the divisions of the Homemaking Department. In the cooking divsion, fundamentals of nutrition, meal plan- ning, and preparation are taught. The sewing division includes selection, care, and construction of garments. Family management students learn how to have better family relations and how to prepare for their family life in the future. Miss Grobill, who has taught at East High for seven years, is shown giving Sherry Viere some helpful advice with her sewing project. Creativity Is Encouraged Principles and elements of design and their practical uses are stressed in fine arts. Courses include begin- ning and intermediate drawing, sculpture, printmaking, and painting. Students in applied art make use of materials such as cloth, thread, wire, and clay. The pleasure of good workmanship is stressed. Textile design, ceramics, and woodwork may be taken as full semester courses. The Art Department also makes many publicity posters seen around the school, and scenery for school plays. Miss Skorshoug, applied arts teacher, helps Terry Monteith with a wood project. Mr. Chorles Mohaffey is shown here directing the band during a rehearsal. Music Provides Adding much to the enjoyment of East High is the Music Department. Our band, consisting of eighty-two members, provides music for assemblies, games, and various other school activities. Besides the enjoyment of playing for school events, the players learn to appre- ciate and understand music. The Girls ' and Boys ' Glee Clubs and the A Cappella Choir, directed by Mrs. Lutz, are the performing groups in the Vocal Music Department. These groups per- form at assemblies, other schools, and at several school functions. —16—
