Learning Fundamentals and Safety Teaching the fundamentals of Mechanical Drawing, General Metalshop, Woodworking and Auto Mechanics is the duty of the Industrial Arts Department. Also pictured are the Drivers ' Training teachers, who teach the rules of driving and the operation of an automobile. Goal: Physical Fitness With emphasis on physical fitness, students in Physical Education participate in everything from touch football to modern dancing. Sophomores are required to take swim- ming. The curriculum of P.E. provides an hour each day in which students can enjoy themselves, while also learning the importance of sportsmanship, leadership and responsibility. — 16—

New Horizons in Language Making a dead language come alive is Mrs. Erickson, who teaches Latin and sponsors Latin Club. She also is one of East ' s helpful counselors. Latin and French are taught by Mr. Dolan, who has been at EHS- six years. He also spon- sors French Club and takes tickets at athletic events. This year French, German, Latin, and Spanish are the language courses offered to EHS students. In each of these classes emphasis is placed on vocabulary building, grammatical structure, laboratory drills, and reading and writing the language. German and sophomore En- glish are taught by Mr. Calt- vedt, who is at East for his second year. He also sponsors German Club and assists with Pep Club. Espanol is a popular foreign language at EHS. It is taught by Miss Gillespie, who also spon- sors East ' s Spanish Club. Instructing in Law and Salesmanship is Mr. Devin, who is assistant track coach. He also sponsors Pep Club and co-sponsors Quill Ad Club. Mrs. Murdock not only teaches Salesman- ship and Distributive Education, but also co-sponsors Quill Ad Club and DECA Club. Actively coaching our varsity basketball team and golf for the last three years, Mr. Sandquist also teaches Typing and Commer- cial Arithmetic. Preparing to Enter the Business World Putting in her first appear- ance here at EHS this year is Mi-s. Nuss, who teaches Clerical I ' i art ice. Typing, and Notehand. ri A new face at EHS this year, Miss Ochs teaches Typing, Shorthand, and Salesmanship. She is also co-sponsor of the Steppers. The Commercial Department of East High is well equipped for teaching the necessary skills needed in commercial work both before and after graduation. The courses offered are Bookkeeping, which involves taking care of a simple set of books; Commercial Law, which is learning about legal situations; Salesmanship, which teaches methods of selling; Commercial Arithme- tic, which helps in the understanding of mathematic fundamentals; Commercial Geography, which is learn- ing about international relationships; Distributive Edu- cation, which deals with creating job opportunities; and Merchandising, which involves the problems of depart- ment stores. Preparation for general office work is taught in Typing, Shorthand, Notehand, and Clerical Practice. This department is one of the most important and is used to the utmost advantage. Presently teaching Bookkeep- ing is Mr. Mauk. He has been teaching here at East for nine years. Shorthand and typing are taught by Miss Soutter, who also sponsors our Future Teach- ers ' Club here at East. Heading the General Com- mercial Department and teach- ing Bookkeeping and Accounting are the duties of Mr. Springate. He is also a part-time counselor. Stenographic Orientation, Typ- ing, and Shorthand are taught by Mr. Wanek, who has been teaching at East for seven years. -17-
