Physical Education Departmeiit Mr Baeth M ss Spencer Often in swimming half the class swims a stroke across the pool an thc rest of the class analyzes their mistakes then the process is reversed Some of the better swimmers have the opportunity to learn different swimming techniques taught by Miss Spencer Today more and more people are stress ng the need for physical fitness in the youth of America to keep them mentally and physically strong against aggressors East High is not lagging in its efforts to carry on this nation wide program Almost everycne is taking one of the physical edu cation classes offered Boys and girls gym classes are supervised by Mr Rump and Mrs Bird and boys and girls swimming headed by Mr Baeth and Miss Spencer There ore also intramural games which de velop the spirit of sportsmanship and com petition This girls' gym class is playing basketball tone of their many activitiesl, Their activities also include volley ball, dancing, drills, rope jumping, exer- cises, tennis, and softball, which widen their interests and strengthen their Mr. Rump bodies. Mrs. Shaw Home economics is a wide and varied course, When the study of this course enters the minds at many, they think only of learning how to cook, Stu- dents who have participated in home economics classes could explain to them that the study of this course consists not only at cooking but of tailoring, table setting and decoration, family relations, and many of the other details which one must know to manage a home. Mrs. Baal fwho teaches sew- ing and family relationsl, Mrs. Shaw lwho also teaches sew- ingl, and Miss Wetzstein Cwho teaches cooking and home management? make up this department.

Department ol Industrial Arts Mr, Anderson Industrial Arts offers many varied courses. These boys are working to complete an assignment in the department of mechanical drawing. Mr. Martin Mr. Bergman 'R its Mr. Tullis Mr. De Mouth I Y . 3' ,If . pi-0' Mr. Rasmussen Industrial arts is divided into several departments, these in- clude auto mechanics, general shop, mechanical drawing, wocd- wcrking, and driver education, bringing the industrial arts sec- tion to a total of five, Many of the students at East who drive cars find that the auto mechanic classes are eager and efficient to service their cars. The driver education course offers a chance to learn driving safety, and, in the end, to obtain a license. Frames for decoration in the student center, scenery for the school plays, and other activities requiring construction are supplied by the various industrial arts classes. All of the de- partments offer valuable instruction for on the job, and for later on in life. -17- Mr. Sargent
