l:OOll?Clll 5605011 When the f1nal smoke of battle had cleared away from the 1941 grrdrron battle fronts, our East Des Mo1nes warrrors had plucked for them selves a few of the Iowa state prep honors For example the Lee Townsh1p eleven had cla1med a stat1st1cal better half of the second place berth ln the B1g Seven Conference shar 1ng space w1th West Waterloo North Loses Crown North Des MOIHSS found 1tself m1nus the c1ty ser1es crown th1s year Taken from us last sea son th1s coveted honor found 1lS Way back to the east Slde of town where 1t has rested longer than elsewhere 1n the c1ty Although we can not cla1m a perfect season 1f we mean by that no defeats or t1es we can be proud of the great record that we d1d ma1nta1n seven V1 tor1es from a d1ff1cult erght game schedule FIVE on Al1C1ty Team A fourth honor that the ent1re school IS proud of 1S the fact that the 1941 All C1ty h1gh school football team chosen by the Des Mo1nes Trrb une saw f1ve members of the East Hrgh squad occupymg places on the f1rst eleven the h1ghest representat1on of any school Superlatrves The Tr1bune used a record number of super latrves 1n descrrbmg our players superlat1ves to whlch we echo a hearty amen Doubtless the best quarterback 1n the c1ty was Ernar Iohn son East H1gh slgnal caller He klcked w1th deadly accuracy passed equally well and alertly followrng the paths opened by h1s blockers ran l1ke a deer m1nus the deer s trm ldlly Speaklng of blockers B1ll Freeman was the best blockrng l1neman 1n the crty to quote the Tr1bune Many belreve that th1s guard w1th h1s feroclous blocks drd more to spark the East Hrgh thrusts than anythrng else Gene Taylor Captam Gene Taylor who acted as the captaln of the team th1s year drew the center spot wrth h1s consrstent heads up brand of football H was a b1g reason for sh1ft1ng Bob Story the transferee to a tackle spot from the center spot that had been h1S rn Councrl Bluffs however Story played the tackles game as bnlhantlv as the center s and he was g1ven a place on the All C1ty wrthout quest1on Snatchrng away the All C1ty tackle post 1nc1dentally wa only a prevrew to Story for a greater honor When the local newspapers publlshed the1r llst of the very best players 1n the state that IS the All State team, Story, was the only Des MOIHGS player to be assrgned a pos1t1on and that IS an honor' Another who had no not1ceable compet1t1on for h1s post was Iesse H111 6 feet 2 1nches of football sk1ll H1s pass1ng runnrng and tackl1ng added much of the punch to East Hlgh s game All Deserve Credrt These f1ve were outstand1ng but they were not the team Harold Lawler and Delbert Cockayne deserve spec1al mentlon for the out stand1ng playmg that netted them pos1t1ons on the second team of the All Clty But to each and every one of the boys should go our fullest apprec1at1on for affordrng East Hrgh Wllh the great team that 1S tradrtronally ours OOTBALL STANDINGS CITY SERIES East Roose en North Lmcoln BIG SEVEN CONFERENCE East Waterloo Roosevelt East Des MOINES Tied Fort Dodge WGS!
