To everything there is a season, and atime to every purpose under the
heaven:
A time to be born and a time to dieg a time to plant, and a time
to pluck up that which is plantedg
A time to kill, and a time to healg atime to break down, and a
time to build up:
A time to weep, and a time to laugh: a time to mourn, and a time
to dance:
A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones togetherg a
time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracingg
A time to get, and a time to lose: a time to keep, and a time to
cast awayg
A time to rend, and a time to sew, a time to keep silence, and a
time to speak:
- A time to
peace.

Q
Mr. Nelson,
We, the members of The Senior Class of 1970, wish to dedicate
this year's Minaret to you. Throughout our years at East High School
you have successfully provided us with an outstanding marching band
and orchestra which greatly helped to boost our spirit and loyalty,
and gave us something of which to be proud,
We shall never forget the terrific times we had in our pep
assemblies and in section 5 at the Rubber Bowl, singing, and cheering
along with the band. Nor shall we forget the splendid way in which
the band represented our school during halftime.
We are remembering, too, your work inorganizing and directing
the fine orchestra whose music brightened so many assemblies during
our years at East. V
We wish, then, to thank you in this special way for all you have
done for us. We shall always remember you when we recall the
Loyalty played by the East High Band: East High first, East High last,
East High best of all . . .
With affection,
The Senior Class of 1970

Administration
We are proud and privileged to have as our
administrators two such capable men as Mr. James
Appleby, principal, and M. Michael Krino, as-
sistant principal,
We are happy to welcome Mr. Appleby back
to his Alma Mater after his several years' service
as principal at West Junior High. Before this he
taught physical education at Lincoln Elementary
School and was a successful basketball coach at
Central High School.
Mr. Appleby received his Bachelor of Educa-
tion degree from the University of Akron, and his
Master's degree from Kent State University.
Mr, Krino, also a graduate of East, returned
here to teach and coach before being appointed
assistant principal.
In 1951 Mr. Krino was selected Coach of the
Year. A fotuider of the Hall of Fame, he is also
an active member of the Phi Delta Kappa execu-
tive committee and the Northeastern Ohio District
Board of Athletics.
Mr. Krino completed work for both a Bache-
lor of Science and a Master of Education at the
University of Akron.
East is privileged to have two
dedicated, efficient and hard-
working secretaries as our Mrs.
Bernadine Davis and Miss Liberty
Manos. We are most proud to
have these East High graduates
return to perform their many
duties and help run the office
with vigor and precision.

Helping our chief administrators are three intelligent and skilled
counselors: Mr. Russell Martin, Mrs. Rose Picciotti, and Mrs. Janice
Witherow. East students are fortunate to have three such worthy peo-
ple to whom they may go for help and advice.
Mr. Martin is well equipped for guiding the 12th grade class,
having earned B.S. and M.S. degrees and a Guidance Counselor
Certificate from the University of Akron.
Advising the members of the junior class is Mrs. Witherow.
This understanding and thoughtful counselor received her B. S.
degree from Kent State University and attended Akron University
to qualify for her guidance position.
Mrs. Picciotti employs her fine educational background to
counsel the East High sophomores. Both her B. S. and M. S,
degrees were earned at the University of Akron.

The 1969 Homecoming festivities sponsored by stu-
dent council highlighted the fall season. Everyone en-
joyed the fun- filled pep assembly, the exiting football
game against Kenmore, and the enchanted evening at
the annual Homecoming Dance.
Having as its theme "Age of Aquarius," the dance
was held in the school gymnasium. Students transformed
the gym into a lovely setting of blue and green for this
memorable occasion. The members of the Homecoming
court and queen, Pam Brannon, were honored guests.
Entertainment was provided by the singing "Hi-Lo's," a
fortune teller and "The Same Kind. "

East Senior Choir
East Junior Choir
The H i-Los
Through the dedicated efforts
and guidance of Mr. Arnstutz, the
East High vocal music department
has achieved an outstanding repu-
tation throughout the Akron area.
The choir members, the Hi-Los
and the boys quartet have many
opportunities to demonstrate their
singing abilities throughout the
year. They not only provide enter-
tainment at school assemblies and
the annual musical, but also for
the general public out of school.
Concerts are given at the May
festival, the Chapel Hill Mall, the
Y. W.C.A. and at other locations
in Akron.

"Bells Are 99
The musical comedy, "Bells are Ringing, " a story about a
switchboard operator that gets involved with all her subscribers
was presented in February by the East High Music Department.
The director of the production was Mr. David Amstutz.
The lead roles were taken by Ruthann Koroly and Dennis Lan-
din. Supporting parts were taken by Kenny Bland, Carol Brown,
Joe Farrell, Suzette McFalls, Steve Partridge, Dorty Thorn and
Dow Thomas. Members of the Senior Choir made up the chorus,
served as stagehands, and helped in many other ways.
The musical accompaniment was supplied by Joanne Bader,
Bob Campbell, Rick Jameson, Jill Stewart and Howard Taylor.

East High Orchestra
The East High Marching Band is always a great boost to the spirit and sportsmanship of the student
body. Members of the band displayed much skill and talent during the 1969-70 school year. While per-
forming at pep assemblies and at half- time at our football games, the band became recognized as one of
the best bands in the area. Under the direction of Mr. Nelson, the band is held in high esteem by students,
faculty and fans.
The Orchestra is also a vital part of the East High Music Department. This hard working group per-
form at various functions throughout the year.

Football 1 969
The Rubber Bowl became alive with a cheer from
the crowd to begin the 1969 football season for the fight-
ing East High Orientals .
Many long hours during the summer had been put in
by Coach Patella, his staff and players in preparation
for the football season.
With only six starting seniors, the team was plagued
with lack of experience. But spirit and courage made up
the deficit. Each time they lost, the team came back to
try again for victory the next week, and each time they
won, the pride held by East students for their team grew
It was this pride and faith that helped the Orientals land
a spot in the playoffs.
The team 's city series record 'was 4-2 and this gave
them hopes of regaining the City Series title. But luck
was not with them. On the freezing night of November
14, they were defeated by arch-rival Garfield, 22-0.
Although the hope for the title was not achieved,
the Orientals gave it a valiant try, and in the hearts of
every student and faculty member at East, Coach Patella,
his staff, and the 1969 football team will always remain
number 1!

Even though the Orientals were unable to make the play-
offs, this year's 1969-70 basketball team deserves much
credit. Opening their season with two exciting wins over
Ellet and Buchtel, the East cagers were high for the games
yet to be played. But a close loss to Central dampened their
spirits and the season rolled on, with the Orientals losing
several games by only a few points. They closed their regu-
lar season play with a 5-10 record over-all and a 2-6 city
series record. In Sectional Tournament play, the Orientals
had an easy victory over Field with the score 71-60. They
lost their second round of play to Hudson by one basket in
the last seven seconds.
The East High student body is extremely proud of their
basketball team, for it proved that East High never quits.

The 1969 Oriental baseball team is one which
the students oi East can 11uly be proud of.
Coached by Don Young, the team combined
powerful hitting with strong pitching to form
one of the best baseball teams East has ever had.
ln Sectional Tournament play, behind the
pitching arm of Tom Lantz, the team had three
decisive wins over Ellet, Hoban and Walsh, and
defeated Canton Lincoln for the District Champ-
ionship title. Advancing to Regional play, East
lost their hopes for the State Tournament with
a 3-O shut- out to St. Joseph in a hard fought and
heart breaking game.
Despite the loss, the Orientals came back to
gain the City Series title with a 19-5 record
overall, and a 5-3 record in City Series play.

The 1969 Oriental track team blitzed right hrough another magnificent season and successfully added one victory
after another to East High 's tremendous record. Through the constant and dedicated efforts of the team and the out-
standing coaching ability of Coach Dick Sapronetti, the Orientals made a superb showing at the district meet dropping
only to Garfield High School. This unfortunate defeat ended East 's hopes for a fifth consecutive championship, but
awarded them the secondplace title.
A similar story is told about the city meet in which the Orientals were defeated by Firestone. They had to be con-

And so the 1969-1970 school year comes to aclose with every
senior taking with him cherished memories of his past three years as
an East High Oriental, We, the editors of this year's Minaret, have
tried to capture these memories and arrange them in such a way as to
reflect the time spent at East which has been so important in your lives.
We have tried in the making of this book to put in what you, the
students, would most like to have and appreciate. This includes all
events and aspects of life here at East which we hope make this year's
Minaret something you will cherish, something that will bring back
to you memories of this past year.
But we could not have made this book of reflections alone. We
extend deep gratitude to our staff, which includes seniors: Joanne
Bader, Donna Carder, Dan Ewing, Jim Hymes, Glenda James, Craig
Johnson, Jackie Watson, Qtypistsj - Linda Tudor and Debbie Elze, juniors:
Randy Hudson, and Bobbie Pavkov, and sophomore Mary Cavender
for offering suggestions, bearing great responsibilities and giving personal
support, Together they have worked hard to help produce a new and
striking yearbook. We would also like to thank our photographers, Mr.
Fitzgerald and Mr. Freeman, for providing us with individual portraits
and many candid shots. Most of all we would like to express our sincere
appreciation to our advisor, Mr. Wise, who helped make this book possible.
So to you, the seniors who are graduating, and to you, the juniors
and sophomores who are returning to be the new leaders of East, we
give the 1970 yearbook. ln it is a part of us, a part of you and most
important, a part of the memories which will always be held for our
dear East High.
Sincerely,
Donna Butz, Co-editor
Patty Kanis, Co-editorbi
