HISTORY OF EAST With the opening of East in 1926, a dream came true to the late J. W. Smith, Lincoln Junior High principal, who became East's first principal. Upon his retirement in 1948, he was suc- ceeded by E. E. Fell, his assistant. Burton Honey, '31 local graduate who made good, took over his duties following the retirement of E. E. Fell in 1956. With the enrollment rising, a new addition was needed. In 1954, new classrooms, shops, cafeteria, gym and lockerooms were added. ln 1958, a blacktop playground with basketball, shuffleboard, tennis courts, tether ball, picnic tables and benches to give students supervised recreation was installed. East, now a iunior and senior high school, has an enrollment of 1700 and a faculty of 81, compared to the 1000 students and 60 faculty members in 1926. CLASS OF 1959 After carefully studying the ballot issued by the sang, color and flower committee, the senior class chose Smoke Gets in Your Eyes , white and gold, red roses, and as their theme, A Night to Remember . 644:64 744 'Me Wiemazdea sered summer grass passing to the red and gold beauty of autumn . . . husky young men . . . beautiful young girls . . . in sporty homecoming frocks- in flowing gowns, swirl by in a montage of firey reds, clean pure whites, and pass also to the tender alive smell of spring and graduation. a year has come and gone . . . we have grown older and perhaps wiser but we must pass too from the carefree loves of youth to the burdens of mature responsibilities. and, in the autumn of our lives- for, life too must pass, we shall remember- happiness and sorrow, ioy and disappointment, but, above all, we SHALL remember, and in doing so, be able to soy sincerely- thanks . . . thanks for the memory. -if Page Four 1-Ilv
