Smith, Lincoln Junior High principal, who became East's first principal. Upon his retirement in 1948, he was suc- ceeded by E. E. Fell, his assistant. Burton Honey, '31 local graduate who made good, took over his duties following the retirement of E. E. Fell in 1956. With the enrollment rising, a new addition was needed. In 1954, new classrooms, shops, cafeteria, gym and lockerooms were added. ln 1958, a blacktop playground with basketball, shuffleboard, tennis courts, tether ball, picnic tables and benches to give students supervised recreation was installed. East, now a iunior and senior high school, has an enrollment of 1700 and a faculty of 81, compared to the 1000 students and 60 faculty members in 1926. CLASS OF 1959 After carefully studying the ballot issued by the sang, color and flower committee, the senior class chose Smoke Gets in Your Eyes , white and gold, red roses, and as their theme, A Night to Remember . 644:64 744 'Me Wiemazdea sered summer grass passing to the red and gold beauty of autumn . . . husky young men . . . beautiful young girls . . . in sporty homecoming frocks- in flowing gowns, swirl by in a montage of firey reds, clean pure whites, and pass also to the tender alive smell of spring and graduation. a year has come and gone . . . we have grown older and perhaps wiser but we must pass too from the carefree loves of youth to the burdens of mature responsibilities. and, in the autumn of our lives- for, life too must pass, we shall remember- happiness and sorrow, ioy and disappointment, but, above all, we SHALL remember, and in doing so, be able to soy sincerely- thanks . . . thanks for the memory. -if Page Four 1-Ilv TABLE OF CONTENTS History of East .... Ed served as head of the commercial department for almost thirty years, and prior to his retirement, was East's only golf coach. E. R. , as he is affectionately called, taught at Lincoln Junior High before coming to East in 1926, when the school opened. ln the past years, he always offered a helping hand in school activities and gladly gave his wise words of advice when asked. In 1952, Coach Smith and his team traveled to Colum- bus and won the first state championship for East in any sport. With respect and admiration, we, the seniors of East High extend to E. R. Smith, best wishes in the years to come. -'El Page Six li' Afi- In-pu nnauna .L vw-4 ,W vw ! Our democratic form of government, in giving you the opportunity to pursue these goals, holds that the greatest development of the individual represents the highest good for the individual and for the nation. Your continual effort for mature development will depend upon your use of the experiences gained through your years of schooling. May you find happiness, success, and satisfaction in your future life's work. -'El Page Eight lif- l J f ff, X As June, 1959 becomes a reality, a new challenge must be met by each of you who are leaving us. Whether it be in the collegiate field or in the career you have chosen, it means entering into adult re- sponsibility. I sincerely hope that we have helped to prepare you for this important task. Good luck graduating seniors, and may all of the best be yours. YV efffffr 1 Assistant Principal JOHN PANIK ln preparing yourself to meet and suc- cessfully solve the problems of everyday living, we hope you have learned to think, learned to live together in our society, and have become aware of the need for hard work if our nation and society are to sur- vive. We hope we have been successful in building character and instilling the ideals and the faith to know what is right. Your success and happiness are our pri- mary concern as you leave East High School. JOHN HUNTER, JR. Junior High Principal I. P. Griffith, Dick Guerrieri MISS HIGLEY Serving in the dual capacity of child care teacher and dean of girls, Miss Ruth Higley provided guidance and friendly advice for a large part of the student body. Throughout the year, seniors and underclassmen sought her help in career choices, college planning, and curriculum adiustments. I z, I Qu fi 14 L f J. P. GRIFFITH J. P. Griffith was never hard to find, and was always patiently willing to give advice and guid- ance when you needed it. J. P. was also active in many other affairs such as group testing, arranging scholarships for seniors, and teach- ing commercial law one period a day. Our office staff is in charge of all such matters concern- ing attendance records, taking care of the book store, and running both the mimeograph and ditto ma- chines. JOHN MALUSSO Helping to correct, and in some cases completely erasing speech and hearing difficulties, has been the task of John Maluso for the past five years. Yet to each of her people she left a very personal memory of a most gracious and benign woman. As is indeed proper, a suitable epitaph may best be written in Latin in, morte-- vitap in death-life . For hers is that life which defies all of nature, eternal life. -'C-f Page One Hundred litr- ACTIVITIES ACITELLI, JUDY Gilt Committee. AMAUSON, JOHNNIE M. Y-Teens, Basketball Team, Social Committee.
