Here was the widened opportunity for service which he had been seeking. In 1911 Iohn Smith was made principal of Lincoln School. To Lincoln School came the children of new emigrants, people from almost every nation on earth. Iohn Smith knew their problems. His constant trust in God and faith in himself ever stood out as a beacon of light and as a source of inspiration and courage to the little folks of our new citizens in America. It was not long before Iohn Smith realized that to give the children of the east side the same opportunity to attend high school that the children of the north and south side had He talked to influ ential citizens he buttonholed politicians he wrote articles in the papers he encouraged the people of the East side to fight and demand that a high something must be done school second to none be bu1lt for the children of our new emigrants In time Iohn Smlths idea of a new high school gained favor and in 1926 East High School was proudly opened ssh Under his leadership East H1gh has produced some of the finest students and athletes ever to come from Youngstown Many colleges and universities have copied the East High system until today it stands as an everlrvrng memorial to Iohn W Smith who has been at the helm as principal during the ,X past 20 years Q' J L Nor has Iohn Smith s life been a one track life His services to the city of Youngstown during a lifetime includes chairman of teachers Lecture Committee 1916 1919 teacher of Men s Bible Class for over 18 years member of the Board of Trustees and of the Mahoning Building Committee of the Mahoning Methodist Church member of the Chamber of Commerce was the first president of Youngstown Education Association from 1920 to 1922 president of Torch Club and president of the Klwanis Club Yes Iohn Smith the students of East High School believe we speak not for the present students and the faculty but for all the graduates of East High the people of the East Side yes even the City of Youngstown when we say that to you and Mrs Smith we s1ncerely wish all of the best that can come to you folks who have made Youngstown a better place because you were here may the remainder of your days be bright in the memory of the 52 years of teaching and serving the generations of children who have received the guidance and inspiration of their life s work from you Alma Mater ,Pg N11 , as-Sc 420,90 W2 rm' 'SV 8044 5, 9,6-Arn, Q 4 '1 . . . Q , .f . . , To be graduating from high school at a time when so many challenging problems are waiting to be solved should cause every member of this Iune Class to think of himself in relation to the needs of society. How has your attendance at East High prepared you for living in a world whose pattern of life is so rapidly changing? The opportunities of further education are limited only by your ability and industry to take advantage of them. Many will find those opportunities in colleges or other institutions of higher learning. Other will find them while on the job or associating with people. We have tried to teach you how to evaluate knowledge so that you may approach your problems with clear thinking and integrity of mind. The ideals you have formulated coupled with a will to serve those ideals are invaluable to successful living. Our associations together have been pleasant and we regret to see the time come when we must separate, although we know it is but a part of the great pattern of world change. Always remember your interest is our interest and your success is a measure of ours. E. E. FELL, Ass't. Prin. Giving advice, checking on absence and helping students find enjoyment are a few of the daily tasks of Miss Olive Iones and Mr. Clyde Hake, student counselors. Mrs. Dorothy Harrison and Mr. Myron Reese are in charge of bookkeeping and accounting of all school finances. Keeping track of anything that is liable to come up con- cerning the office, Miss Ieannette Scull, East High School's secretary, renders her services throughout the school year to teachers and students alike. sf OFFICE FORCE Left to right standing Clyde Hake, Dean of Boys, Myron Reese, School Treasurer. ' et K Enjoying one of their longest jaunts in the school's history, Coach Dick Barrett's ardent East gridders rambled over 200 miles to encounter the highly regarded Portsmouth Trojans at the city's Municipal Stadium. The boys went through a light pre-garne scrimmage and bunked at Chillicothe, Ohio. In the morning they made tracks for the city of 42,000 strong. After closely watching their diet, Coach Barrett and his assistants tucked their crew in for an afternoon nap at the Hotel Portsmouth. Stubborn rain and windstorrns held the crowd down to 2500 that dreary evening as a gigantic Trojan eleven slipped past East 14-12 in the seasons finale. Displaying their Southern Ohio hospitality, a group of Portsmouth rooters forked up a 100 pound sack of popcorn for East High's weary gladiators and invited them all to a school dance that evening. The next day they joined 75,000 other football fans in the state capital to view the Freak Game of the Season when Ohio State's blazing Buckeyes scored seven points after the game had officially ended to topple the Northwestern Wildcats 7-6. On the long journey home, they were treated at Smithville, Ohio, to all the chicken they could devour. Basketball A male quintet, advertised as Five Men cmd a Guitar, hit the heighth of popularity because each man was at the same time a specialist and an essential part of the group. Picture five boys and a coach, draw the analogy and you have the basket- ball team of East High, runner up in the scholastic hoop season. Inexperience led to our first defeat at the hands of New Castle 4l-30. A last minute field goal, saw Memorial take a thriller 34-33. Our first victory was at the cost of Wellsville 52-37. In an overtime contest we stopped Niles 50-48. We defeated North 35-23 in our first city series contest. Struthers was added to the vanquished list 51-44. Warren stopped our last quarter offense 53-51. Girard couldn't hold on to their first quarter lead and lost 47-35. Highly rated Hayen succumbed to East 33-32. Boardman was on the short end 44-38. As the seconds ticked away, East beat Ursuline the hard way, 39-38. The Youngstown College Reserves stopped our last quarter flurry 53-40. East Liverpool came from way under to a 60-53 victory. Sharon ended the season with a 44-34 victory. In the N. E. O. Regional Tournament East proved to be a ball of fire. The Alliance Aviators were hit hard for a 40-27 shellacking. Girard seeking revenge for a previous defeat took another drubbing 51-39. Seeded Canton South really had some hard trouble taking a 54-40 victory which eliminated the Sunrisers and closed the season. Reserve Basketball Always a colorful section in the physiology of American basketball, the East Side again keeps a high place in the winter parade. Birthplace of the razzle dazzle, the side of town whose citizens talk the year around and think nothing of driving miles to see a Reserve, hoop game. Pete Koma's Reserve charges ended the season with a terrific seven hundred, being the victor in seven out of ten contests only. New Castle trounced the Sunrisers heavily in the first battle of the term, 56-25. Gaining self confidence the Komamen defeated Memorial 20-19. We traveled to Wellsville to beat the down by the river boys, 48-33. Niles fell before a clever East barrage, 42-21. The Presidents from Warren handed the Blue and Gold a handsome 48-35 setback. Girard couldn't hold on in this overtime battle and lost, 39-36. Boardman Spartans squeezed by for a 41-32 victory. Hubbard fell before a fast East attack, 43-22.
