Our forefathers had a keen appreciation of the obligations resting upon each individual in a democracy. They had lived under a government in which they had little or no part. They had felt the hand of tyranny and knew all the evils which it engendered. When they were framing a government of their own, they adopted a Constitution which gave everyone the opportunity to provide for his own political, economic, and social security. This was to be done by men working in cooperation with others. Success could come only when each individual realized his responsibility to the group. Despite our mistakes, this success has been the wonder and admiration of the world. To live in free America has been the great desire of all peoples of the world. So long as such ideals dominate the lives and thinking of men, democracy can and will function. Mistakes may be made, but such mistakes are of the brain. People at heart are inherently honest, and as our knowledge and wisdom increases, we correct our mistakes. The essential thing is for us to remember that such power is always in our hands and that such remedies can and will be applied by peaceful means. The danger is that we may neglect our opportunities. What is every- body's business is likely to be nobody's business. We realize that civic responsibility is the price of democracy, but we must dedicate ourselves to this ideal if we wish to retain the priceless rights and privileges which are now ours. We know this ideal is in your hearts, but will you make it control your lives? The things you do and the lives you live will be a measure of your real worth to humanity. lf you will make your ideals dominate your life, East High and all connected with it, will have reason to be proud of you and will consider the money and effort expended in your behalf but a small payment in one of the most profitable investments it has been their privilege to make.
