Ame, f939 By Bill Welsh S WE look back, how short the time seems since that memorable day in September, 1936! lt was really quite a while before we acquired the veneer which seemed so hopelessly far away during that first semester in the school we are now about to leave. Shall we ever forget the search for rooms, the helpful t?l seniors, Coach Conly's "put-on" gruffness, or the wonderful consolation of a well-known face? Everything rolled more smoothly after that first ordeal. Many of us began to find our rightful places and build firm foundations for our coming life and friendships. Probably the most notable of our earlier distinctions was gained on the cinder track by Casey Rish, that grand runner, who since has made the All-American team and who is continually shattering records: by Ray Bibbs, Iohnny Thompson, Eddie Thomas, Halle Webb, and Dale Fiesler-and by all of the others who now form the nucleus of one of the greatest track teams in the history of East High School. On returning the next September, the class found it much easier to get started. More and more the "Class of '39" began to be recognized. Sports still held the limelight, as Grady Iackson, Veme Ienkins, Eddie Thomas, Benny Lucas, and the rest of our senior gridders began their careers on the football field. Hockey was intro- duced, and Gil Hannigan and Billy Hile helped the Bombers clear the ice of all opposition until that fatal game with Shaker, which lost for us the city championship. Basketball and baseball were also well represented by our boys, with Chuck Mlakar, Bob Wren, and Eddie Ioseph starring for the netters, and Sonny Alexander, Deane Stafford, and Ben Lucas showing the baseball league that they were tops in their chosen sport. Inaugurated at last was the new social room, rather a contrast to the more sober class rooms. A number of clubs gave some fine parties within its cheerful atmosphere. In our final year, things really began to happen. As a l2B, Bob Rudd upset the senior candidate to become president of the Hi-Y. The football team, almost completely composed of our classmates, sailed through a very successful season. Led by Captain Benny Lucas, the boys of the gridiron swept aside some tough opposition and ended their season in fine style. The high spot of our last fall semester was our first mixer. Many of the boys are still capitalizing on the feminine introductions that were obtained at that time. Another memorable incident was the almost impossible time we had studying while workers were cleaning the bricks and reinforcing the cement on the outside of the building. By the time the spring semester was under way, the Iune class of '39 ruled the school. Sports, scholarship, leadership, and extracurricular activities were dominated by the seniors, who at last found their real place in the East High sun. Led by Bill Straus, who had been re-elected as class president and editor-in-chief of the Blue and Gold, the school paper took honors at Kent State University. Ralph Tenny ruled the Debate Club, and Iames Glick brought to the fore his magnificent voice as president of the Lincoln Club. Music, too, came in for its share of honors when Eddie Powell, the golden-voiced tenor and pride of the music department, took first place in the city contest. . After a spirited fight, Leonard Pappas won the presidency of the Student Council. During his term he initiated a number of new and popular programs. Council dances were more enjoyable, and the "Swing Auditorium" program the Council sponsored was a big success. The novel idea of a Student Government Day was introduced for the first time, and the students enjoyed it immensely. Leonard Pappas acted as principal and was assisted by Iames Afentakis and Dorothy Kearney, Mantle Orator. Hi-Y continued to be part of the school life, with Bill Welsh as president and Bill Straus as secretary. The highest scholastic honor that can be given in any school is membership in the Natio'nal Honor Society. Here, too, the class was outstanding. Iames Afentakis was elected president and, with Frances Lonchar and Iames Glick, the more active seniors of the society, presented a number of interesting programs and generally went about their work of bettering the school and the school life. The time finally came when our regular senior activities began to take shape, and what a time we had! Under the directorship of Betty Sligh, the Campus Cavalcade, our senior revue, got under way, and after only a few weeks of practice we put on our show. Based on slapstick, and running through a definitely humorous vein from the start to finish, many real hits were scored. During the performance the unique tap dancing of Irene Baker and Polly McWherter drew a great deal of applause from the packed audience, and Eddie Powell brought down the house with his beautiful rendition of "Begin the Beguinef' Behind the stage a grand band of troupers worked without applause, but they had their reward in the definite success of the show. With shocking disregard of the established custom of compiling the class booklet, the second and third period Ioumalism II class worked the entire semester with one goal in mind-to make this booklet the best that had ever come outof East High. Iohn Rozance, Margaret Irvine, Tom Aultman, and all the rest of the class, working with Chairman Renee Irwin, reached their goal and gave to us a beautiful booklet, our Seniors on Parade, that we may well be proud to show to our posterity. Winning from numerous other entries, the class poem submitted by Stella Gracious gave her the title of Class Poet. Eddie Powell was elected class prophet, and Bill Brammer was chosen as toastmaster for our dinner dance. In the midst of all our frantic preparations and breathless excitement, a great event, treated heretofore as a closed subject, came into our lives. East High had a championship teaml In the three years that we had been here, hard luck had dogged the steps of our athletic teams and, while many came close, not one had ever reached the highest pinnacle of success. On the day of 1937 track relays at Mansfield, Ohio, we sent a little band of cindermen to this meet that they might try to win a few places and bring a little more glory to the school. They came back the champions, bringing with them the largest cup that had been seen at East. The hero of this momentuous occasion was Eddie Thomas, one of the finest all-round athletes in the class. Then came the scholarships. The young geniuses of the class competed with stiff opposition for scholar- ship prizes. Dean Ellis, artist deluxe, easily won a scholarship to Cleveland School of Art. Bill Straus and Leonard Pappas also won scholarships in the Western Reserve examinations, and Dorothy Kearney was awarded part tuition to Mount Union. Meanwhile, the committee under Bob Rudd was progressing rapidly with its plans for the dinner dance. What plans we all made for that nightl Family cars were recruited, and money that had been saved for months made its appearance. At noon of June l, we left school in order to prepare for the big night ahead of us. That evening, in the main ballroom of Wade Park Manor, we dined and danced in our final frolic together. At last the great day came. For weeks a committee of the ten best writers in the class had been busy on a script depicting the growth of democracy in America, to be presented at the Commencement exercises. Now, the script was ready: Mark C. Shinnerer, assistant superintendent of high schools, was secured as speaker: and the class, finally, was worked to the proper pitch of excitement and expectation. On the night of Iune 15, 1939, in the auditorium of the Masonic Temple, a rather sobered group of young men and women sat upon the stage together. Some would never meet again, and a few would remain good friends: but not one of all the students who were graduated then will ever forget that night. So, our history as a class closes, and we stand on the threshold of 379 separate and thrilling new worlds. Auf Wiedersehen-and may we meet again! Glam poem By Stella Gracious As Vikings set to brave life's raging sea, We bid farewell and ply ambitions oars. How strongly We surge out, from moorings free, As We forsake the harbor's sheltered shores! "Noblesse Oblige," our banner bright, unfurled, Our shields of hope aloft, We seek to gain Some Vinland's shore, some goal Within the World That must be sought through storms of Wind and rain. Great Pilot of the universal force, Who guides through space each whirling satellite- Direct our youthful lives upon our course That, through Thy aid, our route be straight and right. With heads held high, We bravely set our sail.
