Not only were new representatives from each homeroom chosen but also new +T- officers were elected. Rick Stone was chosen president in an election held previously to the meetings in which he and his two opponents, Larry Gregg, first vice-president, and Carolyn Davison, second vice-president, gave campaign speeches in assembly. The remaining officers were chosen by the council. The main objectives of the group were to further action of obtaining a foreign exchange student, to stress the neces- sity for more school spirit, and to step up relations among students. Under Rick's strong leadership, the council made gross headway on each of these ideals. They started a campaign to collect money and provide a home for an American Field ' ' Service student. School spirit was boosted by more mixers, assemblies, and overall support of school affairs. Better re- lations were noticeable in the co-operation students exerted to make East a top-notch school. As in any organization, however, a stable advisory is the foremost basis of success. Truly, Miss Virginia McClure and Mr. Mervel P, Lunn, co-sponsors, did their part in lead- ing the Student Council in the right direction. It was estab- lished to promote school spirit and friendly relations be- tween students and teachers It also has brought many things to East that have benefited the school since it first started. This year the first semester student council under the leadership of Don Pellow, with Dixie Stover, first vice- presidentg and Violetta Boneff, second vice-president, along with the assisting officers completed I1 very successful term. They sponsored an outstanding Homecoming dance with the theme Stairway to Heaven. Members of the student council and pep club worked all day Saturday be- fore the game to decorate the gym, field, and bleachers. Bracelets were bought for the Homecoming Queen and her attendants. An eighth grade mixer was held and a class king and queen Jana johnson and john Mack were crowned. The annual awards assembly was sponsored by the student coun- cil and for the first time they adopted a needy family at Christmas. The student body brought toys, food and clothes.

Throughout this past year, the Red Cross, under the sponsorship of Mrs. Mary Bates, established a disaster com- mittee and gave aid to those students who wished it. Then, during December, they sent a gift chest to Chile, and gave Christmas stockings to war veterans in the hospitals. Then, in October, a few of the members attended a Red Cross Training center held at Unity Farm in order to i promote the importance of thc Red Cross and to help the representatives acquire a better understanding of Red Cross methods. During the months of September and March, they held a membership drive in order to raise money for the gift chest fund.
