INSTRUCTION IN COMMON LEARNINGS is given by Mr. Clayton Newtan to sub-freshmen. KNEADING DOUGH is a precise art, but Mrs. Juanita Barr makes it laok easy. Cultural Values A dvd need The Hquonset hut on the north campus was ingeniously transformed into a modern art building at the opening of the year. Its two classrooms were shared in instruction by Mr. James Ryon, Mrs, Shirley Brown, and Miss Yvonne Parkerson. Teaching students to speak before an audience was capably handled by Miss Eva VanNatta, who leaves East this year after thirty-six years of instruction in beginning speech and public speaking, Mrs. Etta Marie Carlisle, drama instructor, and Miss Pauline Wfolfe, speech and English teacher. The sub-freshmen find their basic course, common leatnings, a worthwhile study of history, science, and Eng- lish under the instruction of seven teachers, Mr, Clayton Newton, Miss Cosby Harrison, Mrs. Helen Lapsley, Miss Edith Wilson, Mr. Herbert Cohn, Mr. Francis McGreevy, and Mr. Jerome Winegar. The feminine half of East's population learned to in- crease their home economics skills through foods and clothing classes taught by Mrs. Juanita Barr, Mrs. Mary Gauldin, and Mrs. Adah Vendetti, Civics, world history, and American history fill the social studies bill through the teachings of Mr. Mervel P. Lunn, Mr. James Penny, Miss Jessie Willitt, Mr. Edgar Van Fleet, and Mr. William T. Ridley. Courses in American problems. American democracy, and psychology, though half- year courses required the full time study and preparation ro benefit the students taught by Mr. Americo Felici and Mr. John Peters. Family living is a preparation for East's seniors in social and family life to fill their futures. This course is taught by a newcomer to the faculty this year, Mrs. Veona Coons. 'ff ,. - fig Stress allege Preparatory Mathematics play an important role in many students' futures. Not only general math, taught by Mr. Harry Hommes and Mrs. Crystal Barndt, but algebra, geometry, and trig- onornetry, under the instruction of lVLrs. Mary Zickefoose, Mr. Carl West, and Mr. Robert Winters, were the funda- mental subjects that college students based their programs upon. Science has rapidly increased its need in the past few years due to the stress on space travel, engineering, and scientific leadership. For the past two years, East has of- fered an advanced course in physics which is equivalent to a second year college course. lt is taught by Mr, john W. Layman' and is conducted through a college-level text, Chemistry, too, is an accelerated course, receiving an extra honor point. Mr. james Michaels teaches this course in the newly finished laboratory, Girls' human science and biology are taught by Mrs, Mary Bates. Mr, Paul Day and Mr. Tom Smith instruct earth science and general science classes, while Mr. Wallace Grube teaches boys' human science and photography. Zoology is an up-and-coming course at East, taught by Mr. j. W. Peters. The commercial branch of East's curriculum includes typing, stenography, and bookkeeping. These courses are taught by Miss Mabel Mary Cobb, Mrs. Nellie McKanna, Mr. Richard Benson, and Miss Minnie Baker, who is also the school treasurer. Physical fitness is also stressed here at East. Three girls' physical education teachers, Miss Helen Cox, Miss Mary Leclgerwood, and Mrs. Sondra Paris, teach sportsmanship, various athletic skills, and even rhythmic dancing, In the men's department of physical education, Mr. Virland Harris, Mr, Harry Driefus, Mr, Roy Brown, Mr. Douglas Roether, and Mr. Gene Sebastian teach sports, calisthenics, and the skill of getting along with fellow workers.
